Now bear with me on this one because I know I will get a lot of nay-sayers but I feel obligated to put it out there. I have always loved Boykin but figured he would be a late 3rd rounder which would mean we wouldn't have a chance to get him. But recently he has been shooting up some big boards because of his amazing outback bowl game (in which he had a 92 yard kick off return for a touch down and a 7 yard reception for a touchdown, talk about versatility) and for other reasons after the jump.
As a corner, Boykin has high-4.3 to low-4.4 speed. He has decent height (5-10, 185lb) and ball skills and great leaping ability. He is an experienced and proven college corner. He could stand to add a little bulk to help him near the line of scrimmage against the run and bigger NFL receivers.
Another thing that he doesn't get a lot of credit for is his involvement in many of Bacarri Rambo's Interceptions (of which he had 8 this year). In many of the highlights I could find the QB either wanted to throw at Boykin and had to do a quick change and errant pass or over threw Boykin's man to try and give him a run on that allowed Rambo to swoop in. All in all I believe Boykin has what it takes to be a great #2 corner and a viable #1... but wait, there is more.
Boykin is also one of the best return men in the game which was only highlighted by his outback performance and I think he would instantly be a 10000000000% upgrade to our punt return game as well as slightly less but still significant upgrade to our kick returns. He is also a great gunner for the bull dogs pulling of some fantastic tackles on punt coverage.
Lastly the guy had 4 offensive touch downs this season, 2 receiving and 2 rushing and averaged 14 yards per carry and reception. I'm not saying we would want him on offense just making the point that he is a beast no matter where he is on the field.
So what do you say, if Boykin explodes during the Combine and blows the scouts out of the water would you want to pick him up in the 2nd?
