Reactions To The New Carolina Panthers Logo

Around the web we have all sorts of people chiming in on the new logo. Heck, the Carolina Panthers even became the #1 trending topic on twitter because of it.

First off we have Shudown Corner's take. Full disclosure, this piece from Yahoo Sports is intended to be purely a comic piece, rather than anything serious. However, I must admit I chuckled at a few of MJD's opinions on the new Panthers logo, and logotype.

I think it would be a bad idea for you to attempt to shave a panther's eyebrows at home, but these are experts, and an eyebrow-less panther is a more terrifying panther.

I'll admit that in looking at the new logo the lack of eyebrows or the two small middle teeth didn't really resonate. I think I got caught up with the new outline and blue lip/jaw. Judging from the reception on twitter a lot of fans seem upset with the lack of the small middle teeth... not sure I really understand why.

I think most fans are in accordance that it was time for us to drop the Hulkamania/Baywatch font for the team name. Most seem to think that while not perfect, the new logo type is still miles ahead. MJD doesn't seem to think so.

The old logotype said, "We're the Carolina Panthers and we're here to play some football and PARTAAAAAAAY." And that party would be attended by Sinbad and Spuds McKenzie.
The new one ... ah, it's just corporate-y letters with a few random kitty scratches in it. Boooooo. No one who made that font is here to party.

I'm not sure if Sinbad and Spuds would attend a party with just wine and cheese, but it's duly noted.

What do you think of our new Panthers logo? I like it. Added some modern touches without losing the essence of the logo.

Finally, this GIF seems to be floating around. It seems like a good thing to freeze frame if you hate the 'squinting eye'.

I'm slowly coming around on the logo and getting past my dislike of "the lip".

I really like it on the black background, so now I do hope we get black helmets to match the new logo.

When I first saw it, it looked like the Panther had a big blue bottom lip.

But, as time goes on and I see it more, the “lip” stands out less and looks more normal (to me anyway).

There’s not really a whole lot of changes, it’s just looks a bit more streamlined and smooth. A more modernized version, basically. We went from a classic muscle to exotic sports car, hopefully as does our performance on the field.

sorry for this ot comment but can someone make a post regarding the fact that many bloggers ive read recently on other sb nation sites seem t think fua did well while mcclain just sucked.

id make a post myself but i cant on my phone. has anyone else seen any of this? i know neither has dominated but i would surely say mcclain performed better of the 2.

I was of the opinion Fua played better at NT than McClain played at UT

But that was just based on watching tape… I’ll be curious when the advanced charting stats from Football Outsiders are up after the Superbowl to see the comparison

by James Dator on Jan 30, 2012 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

i would have to disagree on this one.

if his only job was to hold his spot w/o getting any push then ok, maybe he out performed mcclain. he has to become at least a little disruptive which i didnt see at all. mcclain made a few plays and showed some prgress imo.

Fua got pushed around alot! and didn’t do much pushing back…. from what i remember. if you look at stats it may say one thing. but, from watching the games it seemed. Mclain was the only one i saw improve. before they both went out and our D line[DT] instantly improved VIA Shirly[lol] Neblitt, Kearse. Over the two rookies! hope they both are working hard!

especially on a black background, it looks like a panther coming out during twilight hours to do a sneak attack. Also, it has more definition with the added curvature on the top of the head, which is more realistic.

If it is not broke do not fix it.

Modernization is great for microwaves and tvs but for symbols of a team it is a ploy to try and sale more jerseys than other teams. I know that most every team has at one point or another change their logos but it seems to me that when it happens it sacrifices more than it gains. I like the fact that for the most part a Panther from 95 could wear a jerseys today and it would that same. Tradition’s in sports lends itself to strenth. I know our team will be strong in any case but lol I prefer for them to leave there stylings alone. Eitherway I am fan and I and sure the modern cat will grow on me. Funny thing… never knew a cat or dog that could modernize.

And I have sent him 5 emials apoligizing that he has clearly ignored. He said that I took my personal attacks on Procton to far and that I need to stop trying to get back on ROF. He also said he gave me plenty of warnings and he only gave me one and all I said after that was that I was just talking to Procton and he banned me that night. I admitted I was wrong and I will still admit that but there comes a point when Ben can show me a little respect after I was practically begging to come back and have been there for a year contributing almost everyday.

by TS BOBCAT on Jan 30, 2012 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I'm definitely not a fan of you being banned

Ben just needs to ban Procton. I really don’t get what’s keeping him from doing it. I know he’s not breaking any specific rules, but he’s a detriment to the site. The dude clearly gets his kicks out of pissing people off on the internet, and it really hurts the community. I’ve actually (not creepily) found his twitter account and he solely uses it to bash the Panthers (especially Newton) and Bobcats and tries to provoke people like Rick Bonnell and Steve Martin.

The dude is the quintessential troll. He’s very good at finding facts and information and he seems like an intelligent guy. He must have the largest stick known to man up his ass all the time to keep him constantly pissy. The internet, and more specifically RoF, would be better without his presence. The sooner Ben realizes that, the better off the site will be.

To be fair TS...

Most sites frown on banned people creating alter-egos just to get back in. Here at CSR we do the same thing. If you’re banned, we ban any alter-egos that are created as well.

Now, I’m not saying you should have or should not have been banned because I don’t know the whole story. (I’m assuming you didn’t do anything ban-worthy because you were involved with MP, and I know how he is because he used to be here.) However, if you were banned for personal attacks, etc. then creating new accounts to beg your way back in isn’t going to help your case very much.

This is my thinking

Ben (the manager of the site) has stated that he’s getting tired of the extensive back and forths over trivial things that aren’t basketball related. There’s one particular individual who is almost always in the middle of it, so I don’t get why he doesn’t nip the problem in the bud and just ban the guy.

If you showed me both logos and asked “which is more streamlined, modern and aggressive looking?” I’d go with the old one without question. The new one to me looks very cliparty. The font is atrocious at least the old font had some unique character or identity, and while it was a bit corny it really grew on me over the years

The logo tweaks are tolerable. The new font absolutely sucks. It looks like Jerry Richardson dusted off his computer with Windows 98 in it that was an old Christmas gift from his kids and decided to bang out a new font look.

Ok I'm officially over my dislike of "the lip"...

After forcing myself to look at it over and over and over again, I’ve trained my brain to get used to it and stop looking at it like it’s a big blue lip. I see the intended purpose behind it now (the 3D look), and I’m on board with it.

I do hope there’s a switch to a black helmet, because honestly that 3D look would look awesome on a black helmet.

I hope the new uniforms are one of these two color schemes:

Color Scheme 1:

Color Scheme 2 (with a black helmet instead of white):

I could live with the black helmet / Black Jersey / grey or black pants as our alternate duds

I think they are too hot for Charlotte other than a couple times a year.

If we currently wear white Jerseys early in the season because of the heat, I can’t imagine changing to black helmets full-time.

by ACA Jester on Jan 31, 2012 10:14 AM EST reply actions

I did a little research...

Typically, the Panthers wear white at home in September and October because of the heat. Well, after doing some research, wearing white at home early in the year doesn’t really give the team an advantage (at least not in the win column).

In the team’s 17 year history, they’ve played 64 games at home in September or October.

- The team’s record in those games is 29-35 (.450 win %).
- The team went undefeated twice (1996 and 2008).
- The team went winless four times (1998*, 2001, 2004, 2007).
- The team went 2-2 four times (1995, 2000, 2002, 2006).
- The team only won once four times (1997, 1999, 2009, 2010).
- The team only lost once twice (2003, 2005).
- The team went 2-3 once (2011).

Given this information, I think it’s okay that they switch to black helmets. Wearing all white isn’t helping them win.

*-In 1998, they played (and won) at home on November 1. If this were counted they would have only went winless three times and would have won once five times. Also, the total would have been 65 games instead of 64, and the win percentage would be .460 instead of .450. I didn’t count it because I strictly adhered to the “September and October” rule. I’m including this note for those who feel that the 11/1 game should count in the calculations, though after writing this long note I realize that most of you won’t even care about this, because I don’t even care that much anymore.

**-Also, I’m not saying that you think wearing all white helps the team win ACA Jester, I’m just bringing this up to promote discussion amongst the group.
