Another possibility for Panthers Backup QB
I was pontificating over the future of the Quarterback Position in Carolina, and the now present search for a backup for Cam Newton. Even though the Panthers have found their Franchise Quarterback, the need remains for a quality Backup QB that can provide continuity and success to the offense in case of emergency. While I like having Derek Anderson around for next year, I don't think the Panthers can remain content with DA at backup quarterback forever.
The QB I have in mind is Joe Webb. Webb is a 2nd Year Player out of UAB, currently backing up Christian "Ponderosa" Ponder in Minnesota. Webb has had documented albeit marginal success in the NFL. Webb finished this year with 5 total TD's and 2 Ints. along with 376 passing yards, and 154 yards rushing. Webb stands at 6'4 220 lbs, with a 4.4 forty yard dash and 42.5 inch vertical. Originally brought into the league as a WR, Webb impressed the Vikings coaching staff, and ultimately earned his chance to play QB in the NFL after Brett Favre's injury situation last season. This year, with Christian Ponder banged up and ineffective, the Vikes inserted Webb into the lineup to facilitate a spark on the offensive side, with great result.via static7.businessinsider.com
Webb provides mobility, a strong arm, athleticism, and that "it" factor that so many quarterbacks lack. If Webb could be had for a 6th Round pick or two, I say Marty should pull the trigger.

completely disagree
I do not want Joe Webb for one reason…I want to see him starting somewhere. All the draft gurus are talking about the Vikes drafting someone to help Ponder, but I doubt he could beat out Webb in a real QB competition. I think any team that needs a QB, and doesn’t get one of the top 2 in the draft, should try to make a deal for Webb.
Somewhat agree
I am not as convinced as you, but I think he is good enough that he would not be a long term answer because someone would want to take the chance on him. If someone makes an offer of much this year, we certainly shouldn’t enter a bidding war for a backup.
I agree.

Don't want him if we have to give up ANYTHING
I wouldn’t even give a 7th round pick. You never know if you can luck up on a good player
Webb would be a more proven and capable backup
Than anyone we could draft in the seventh round.

You never know
I don’t see why everyone wants to bring up that we need a backup QB now. DA is more than capable of running the offense.

Yes he is.
He went to a Pro Bowl in Chud’s offense. I’d say that’s pretty capable.

That's what the Arizona Cardinals thought too

Partly because Rivera said he wants a QB with a similar skillset to Cam.

Looks like he has some huge hands
And I wouldn’t mind him if he’s cheap. He’s looked decent when he’s played.
I can see him starting 2 years from now...
The kid has got talent, so giving up a 6th or a 7th wouldn’t hurt… If he does live up to his potential we could possibly get a Kevin Kolb type trade for him
Think of it like this get a proven QB in the 6th round in Webb or you get a rookie QB in Wilson

kolb only had value because mcnabb and vick got injured so much
let’s hope we don’t get any kind of value from our backup qb.

Good post.
I wouldn’t give up anything for him, but I do like him a whole heck of a lot over Russell Wilson. Prototypical Cam backup.

I would be okay with either of them considering they are backups

Just as long as it's not DA.
Every time Cam gets hurt on Madden or in real life, the game gets kind of boring.
I kinda want to see DA air it out
I think we’ll get a chance to see him do just that this preseason since a lot of last preseason was only used to gauge Cam.
by Atlantapanther on Jan 29, 2012 3:55 PM EST up reply actions
I think that DA has the arm to air it out in this offense.
And better accuracy. It would be interesting to see him air it out, as long as it was in the preseason.

I could get behind this
Webb has a similar skill set as Cam but not nearly as effective. If Webb has a decent supporting cast around him, then he should be a decent QB. Bottom line, we need a backup that will allow our team to stick with the game plan and not become one dimensional. Otherwise, we might as well have Jeff Davidson’s ass calling the offensive plays.

I would be intrigued by using Webb in triple option packages
He’s faster than Newton and we can risk Webb getting hurt. I think we could utilize him effectively unlike Tampa Bay with Josh Johnson last year in those random wildcat packages they used him in.

I like the Webb idea
I also wouldn’t mind seeing Josh Johnson. He is a guy I have always liked. Either would be nice back-ups in my opinion.
I'd rather just sign Dixon
Webb: 57.9% comp, 5.6 YPA, 3/5 TD/INT, 6.8 YPC
Dixon: 59.3% comp, 6.8 YPA, 1/2 TD/ INT, 5.6 YPC
And Dixon will be a free agent as opposed to having to trade for Webb.

Josh Johnson?
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bucs let him walk or just offer a minimum contract. His stats are not that great, but he plays similar to Cam. He might be just good enough to be a long term backup for Cam.
WalterFootball.com Ranks QB's Josh Johnson As A 2.5 Star Free Agent & Dennis Dixon At 2 Stars
Webb isn’t ranked, because he isn’t a Free Agent, but if it helps you judge, they give Derek Anderson a 1 star ranking.

Shockey was ranked lowly last year by him and we see how that turned out.

Get a rookie
depth chart:
CAM
Darron Thomas (inexpensive, 6’3 mobile QB)

& Derek Anderson as the mentor
Highlights are impressive. I'd rather have a veteran as a backup though.
Let’s see who slips through waivers before picking up a rookie.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
I'm not sure he has the arm strength to run the Air Coryell.
But it would be interesting to see him throw some more deep routes.

He has been okay in his limited playing time.
If he is a FA, sure.
I like to think of myself as a one-man wolfpack.
I saw the part about him being a WR
With 6’4 height running a 4.4 I wouldn’t mind having him as a WR and possibly #3 QB.
Pretty much the AE role
CAM....CAAAAAAAAM
Im still rooting for Thomas or Wilson in the 6th or 7th
Or sign Dennis Dixon.I would rather use a draft pick on rookies that have some upside and could possibly put us into a situation the Eagles had with Kolb then use a pick on a guy that has reached his peak as a QB, and I may be the only one that see’s that type of potential in Thomas or Wilson but its just my opinion. I also have a feeling Wilson’s stock is going to start plummiting to atleast the 5th round with the senior bowl and I have a feeling that he will not impress at the combine or pro days.
Any rookie we find in the 6th or 7th wouldn't have the potential upside that Webb provides, IMO.
Webb has proven success in the NFL, is a great athlete, and is only a 2nd year player. He’s also bigger than Thomas and Wilson.

I agree Webb would be a good back up
I just really like Thomas and WIlson and I think they are the two 6th or 7th round picks that have the same potential as Webb. I also have never cared about size at the QB position, it is a factor but I think people make it to big of one sometimes.
Fair enough.
I could see both of those guys being good backups for Cam.

You think we could do a straight up trade: Webb for Clausen?
It would be a win-win for both teams. Personally I believe if the Vikings keep Joe Webb, there will be a controversy anytime Ponder struggles because Webb is a dynamic player that has shown a lot of good flashes. He would make a great back up here if the price is right. Nice idea.

That's an interesting premise for a trade
Our backup is too good and it causes controversy. Give us your crummy backup for our good one so we have an easier decision to make at QB.
I thought about that.
I think it’s possible, but we might have to add a 7th rounder or something along those lines. I could definitely see a QB controversy in Minnesota in the near future though.
