Mocking In The Free World: Don Banks' Latest Has Kirkpatrick To Carolina
In what is sure to be a popular pick leading up to the 2012 draft, Sports Illustrated's Don Banks has the Carolina Panthers passing on offensive linemen and selecting the rangy Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick in his latest mock draft.
The Panthers' statistically-challenged secondary needs another cornerback to start opposite Chris Gamble, and Kirkpatrick offers the size and athleticism to square off against the Marques Colston's, Roddy White's and Mike Williams's of the NFC South. One way for Carolina to step up in weight class in 2012 is to get better at defending the pass.
There are some bizarre curiosities to be sure, like Michael Brockers lasting until the Patriots' 27th pick while the likes of Devon Still, Jerel Worthy and Dontari Poe are all selected earlier, which is unlikely to happen. That being said there are a lot of sound moves that make a great deal of sense.
I suggest you follow the link through to the mock and use the comments to discuss not only the Panthers' move, but what you think of the mock as a whole.

Trade back
We could trade back and pick up Poe at DT and then Gilmore from SC at CB, and fill 2 of our needs on Defense. I big DT?NG in Poe and Gilmore has the size and speed at CB.
id rather we took brockers and jenkins

We need to stay as far away from Gilmore as possible.
We already have CB’s who can’t play the ball in the air. We don’t need another one.

Honestly...yes.
For whatever reason, the majority of them struggle in coverage.
Gilmore is an excellent blitzing corner and a great run support corner, but he sucks in pass coverage. We need a shutdown corner, unless we want to take Gilmore to only play in the box and blitz. If we used him to do that, he would be a good fit. But, I think we need someone with more coverage skills than Gilmore brings to the table.

+1
The secondary does need a serious boost, opposite Gamble. Though I wasn’t aware of the South Carolina corners being bad in coverage.

Name me all the Bama and Saban-coached corners
That are in the NFL and are having success.
Where did I say we needed to get one coached by Saban?

I just don’t see richardson last till 17th, that’s like the bengels wet dream. I think kansas city will take him if he’s still available. I also don’t see the seahawks sticking with their current qb situation. I could however see the redskins do something crazy like draft tanehill at 6. I think all this talk about us drafting dre k doesn’t fit in with what our front office is saying, I also don’t think its a pick the big cat will get behind… I mean he told cam not to get any tattoo’s for gods sake, what’s he going to say to dre k? Just seems like the lazy pick to me, journalists need to do there research a little more

Not gonna Happen....
Hurney is NOT choosing Dre….
The pick i’m guessing will be an offensive lineman which i do think makes sense….The current draft class is very rich in Offensive Linemen.
When you get a franchise QB, the FIRST thing you do is to BETTER protect him unless you are the Rams who did not and wondered why their QB was hurt & regressed.
Look at the Saints OL….it’s Rock solid… Enough of making Bell a starter and banking on ASSUMPTION that Otah will stay healthy. You always plan for the worst and hope for the best….
Get the BPA….In this draft class… It is going to be an OL… Easy call…

yep
I see us taking reiff or martin depending on if we pick 8th or 9th. The ’phins will take the other one either way

The Saints have good guards. Their tackles suck.

Unless somehow Claiborne or Blackmon are available. Which i can’t see happening
It's too early to say.

So it's likely he will?
Or did you mean it’s highly unlikely Hurney is choosing Dre?

Whoops didn't mean to do a double negative. Let me rephrase it
it’s HIGHLY UNLIKELY Hurney IS choosing Dre
It's only January 27. We still have 3 months till draft day.

Swap picks with Bengals and pick up an extra draft pick.
Take OL or DT at 17.
I like collard greens.
On a moral and personal level i have no issues with Kirkpatrick smoking pot
But to be honest it does make me worry about his work ethic. Now for all i know he could work his ass off all day every day and just smoke the occasional blunt to unwind but i’m just a little worried or drafting a Dwayne 2.0 or a Pacman 1.3 (as you’d just about have to go on a killing spree to be a pacman 2.0) . I’m not saying we shouldnt draft him, but if they do decide to go that route i hope they give him a backround check even more extensive than the one they game Cam.
hey, it was an IQ test and
K failed. He’s might be the kind of guy that goes out the night before a superbowl and ends up in jail when we really need him. I think he’s over rated anyway.

yeah the only way i'd be excited about taking him
is if we trade back at least 5 picks. which is possible if there’s a team that wants to take richardson with the 8th/9th
I think we
Should still get Dre k….simply bc we cant have a midget captian covering the 2nd receiver any more. Cap let a LEAGUE HIGH in completions percentage against him….and do you guys remember the Gb and atl game when the recievers caught a short slant and took it to the house bc he was playing so off bc he was getting abused or couldnt make the takle! Its harder to buy a impact corner in free agency for the price we can get Dre k for……we can buy dt’s for way less in free agency that can make an impact compared to a Db’s impact for a cheaper price….plus havnt we seen what 2 rookie dt’s look like? Lol but i would pick up a dt in the draft…a huge fatty..like 6’3+ 335+ lbs…but not in the first rnd for this draft..there is no Suh in this draft…lol but bottom line for me…i feel like Dre k will make more of an impact for the price…and he is a physical player.

i feel like drafting a DT any later than the 2nd round is a wasted pick
Considering that we just took two in the 3rd last year. Any more and your just going to start crowding the position with guys that have an equal amount of talent
I feel like drafting just about any DT is a waste of a pick

Can we not refer to 5'8" as midget
idk what to think of myself then

and lol
I wouldnt take an OL in the first unless its kalil…bc Cam can make up for it with his mobility, he is superman…he did great with a ducktape line this year…we can wait til after we get the defense up to the offenses level lol

we have to protect him!

but
if cam was purely a pocket passer…i would say yeah to OL in the first, but he makes an average OL look good bc of his mobility…in this draft i believe defense is more important…scoring a lot of points don’t mean a thing if we cant out score the other team! lol built a Defense that can stay together for awhile and slow Drew Brees down and Matty ice…and maybe Freeman….so for a change we can be on the winning side of the game that’s going to be decided with less then a touchdown.
I dont think O-Line is an issue
Even without Otah our protection was ok, it wasnt great, but it was ok and Cams athletic ability makes that equally great.
I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
It makes me cringe seeing how desperate for a QB the Redskins are
If they select Tannehill and he isn’t 100%, that may be a problem. It might be the equivalent of Jax taking Gabbert so early last year. I think a trade back is possible, there seem to be options for us in the middle of the furst round.

If they draft Dre K.......I have faith
RR and hurney will haven ran him through the same rigorous scouting they ran Cam through! This is the first round pick….Im sure in the later rounds. you might have to take someone. you haven’t scouted well but, that’s just the nature of the beast.

Dre K is going to be the popular pick for us until the combine...
now free agency could change what other teams do around us. Where Matt Flynn and maybe Asante Samuel and Vincent Jackson end up could change things
I hope the Bucs do a trade with somebody wanting a QB
Then there’s a small chance Claiborne could land with us with 3 possible QBs going in the first 7 picks.
by Atlantapanther on Jan 28, 2012 12:09 PM EST up reply actions
i dont see any qb thats a first round talent
other than luck and griffin. i feel like anyone else taken in the first is a bit of a reach
Well to be fair last year it was like a first round fire sale on abs
Gabbert went for eff sake!

gabbert was said to be one of the better prospects on draft day
What’s more shocking was locker going at 8 and ponder at 12

i would call it unlikely, but it is possible that RGIII falls to their spot
If someone doesnt want to cough up what it would take to get #2 or 3 from the Rams or Vikes, and Cleveland passes up on him (I think it is much more likely than people think it is). Then a later team like KC or SEA could try to move up over WAS. It is all unlikely but it could happen
1- Luck
2- Blackmon
3- Kalil
4- Richardson
*5- RGIII
6- Rieff
7- Coples
I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was
I dunno...
Slightly off-thread, I have to wonder why it is everyone is so enamored of Luck — mostly because it was clear last year that the only reason he had such production was because Stanford’s strength of schedule wasn’t near what typical AP Top 25 teams seem to contend with. Blows away everyone when the opposing team isn’t good, but the moment there’s competition he seems to wilt. It didn’t seem like much changed there, and Luck didn’t do all that well in Stanford’s bowl loss (more pointing to how his production takes a significant hit when it isn’t a team he can steamroll over).
More to the topic — I don’t see us going with Kirkpatrick. I know James said Claiborne tops his personal preference, with Brockers second and Kirkpatrick a rather distant third — and then, James was basing it on why Kirkpatrick wasn’t living up to his hype of being such a good corner. Sounded to me, at least from that, like Kirkpatrick slacked and took plays off. Plus, Kirkpatrick better have hellacious upside — Hogan was considered late 1st round-worthy, and fell because of his off-field issues. I don’t see us discarding Hogan (who’s supposed to be a major steal for us in the draft) for Kirkpatrick. The only reason I see Rivera and Hurney looking at Kirkpatrick is for potential trade bait scenarios for teams who want to potentially move up to get him.
I can see us looking long and hard at Brockers, but I can’t discount DeCastro or Martin getting serious looks as well.
I'll admit--
I didn’t watch the Stanford bowl game, so I can’t say for certain Luck didn’t do well. I just don’t get the love he seems to elicit — I never got it last year, either.
To be forthwright I have not kept up witht he draftable players or ESPN
Yet I am still not surprised to find a college student, much less a star athlete, haveing dealings with pot. I may not have smoked but I know many who have and some even had a good head on there shoulders so to speak.
The Dre K pot incindent will follow him for sure, it will be like the labtop was for Newton. I am confident that the panthers will not take a chance on a play without fully sifting through every nook and cranny they can.
I am a proud supporter of troll hunting.
