Two More Draft Options: Which Would You Choose?
I know this is overkill, but I was disappointed that my previous two draft options were so one-sided. As you will see, I changed a few things in the first three rounds, but the same scenario applies from the last post. We are able to trade back a few or more spots in the 1st round, but as a result, we gain a 3rd and 5th rounder in the process. My hope is that you will have a more difficult time choosing between the two, and the poll will consequently reflect as much. I'm also curious how some of you view taking a chance on Jenkins in the first round after recognizing that many of you(and scouts) are so high on him. His skill level is undeniably at an elite level, but is he worth the risk of taking him in the 1st round in light of his past indiscretions?
Draft 1
1st- OT Jonathan Martin Stanford
2nd- DT Brandon Thompson Clemson
3rd- CB Brandon Boykin Georgia
4th- OT Nate Potter Boise State
5th- OLB Keenan Robinson Texas
5th- S Matt Daniels Duke
6th- WR Stephen Hill Georgia Tech
7th- QB Darren Thomas Oregon
Draft 2
1st- CB Janoris Jenkins Florida/North Alabama
2nd- WR Alshon Jeffrey South Carolina
3rd- OLB Travis Lewis Oklahoma
4th- QB Russell Wilson N.C. State/Wisconsin
5th- S George Iloka Boise State
5th- WR Brian Quick Appalachian State
6th- OLB Terrell Manning N.C. State
7th- DE Matt Conrath Virginia

I admit that I should have paid more attention to that.
In retrospect, maybe I should have only taken one WR in that draft option. But, as it stands, they would certainly be challenged on the practice field to out-perform one another. That wouldn’t be a bad thing, would it?

Considering that there would be the other wideouts consisting of
Smitty, Lafell, Gettis, Edwards, Pilares, Tutu, Adams, possibly Legatron. that’s a lot of wideouts, throw in the fact we have three capable pass catching TEs, and two great RBs. Not much playing time to go around.
You make a valid point, but there is no guarantee...
that Edwards will make the roster next year. Pilares could continue to see little opportunity at the WR position because of his increased role as a punt returner. Gettis is coming off of an injury and Smitty’s #1 status will need to be replaced in a few years.

No OL help in the second option.
You would be surprised how good our current receivers would look if our oline was improved with an early round stud lineman and Cam getting more time to find open receivers.
Better Oline means better running game which helps the receivers and better Oline means Cam gets more time , and receivers get more time to get open. Gettis and Lafell along with tight ends we have. I’ll pass on the need for multiple receivers.

This one is tougher
But I went with #2, Alshon in the second would be nice, and Lewis in the third is a great pick.

Alshon in the 2nd would be an interesting conundrum.
For him to drop into the second, would most likely mean his forty was below average. This only begs the following question: If he does indeed have below average speed(4.6 range), is he worth a 2nd rounder?

Once he gets around an NFL conditioning program he will be fine.
I would love nothing more to see him drop to our second round pick. The value there would be off the charts for Alshon.

If Alshon fell to us in the second, we better take him and run before the police find out we got a steal!

It's realistic to see him fall if he puts on a poor performance....
at the combine. On the other hand, if he surprises people with a better than expected combine, we might consider him in the first, especially in a trade back scenario.

I wouldn't touch Jenkins.
So I suppose I’ll go with Draft #1.

If you've followed the Senior Bowl practice updates this week....
then you already know that most scouts have raved about his cover skills, which could very well turn out to be in the lock-down category. Depending on his performance at the combine(forty, vertical, splits, and interviews), he could come out of there with a better draft grade than any of the corners available, including Claiborne. If that’s the case, he’s on my short list.
Assuming we do trade back and get a 3rd rounder
Boykin would be a great addition. I know I sound like a homer, but the way he can be utilized fits the coaching staff’s philosophy. Boykin plays goid defense and is an awesome return man on punts. Another aspect of his ability is he can be lined up as a receiver or in the backfield. He is a defensive back with scatback qualities. In other words, by adding him we just upgraded our team in all three areas: defense, offense & special teams.

He may not last until the 3rd.
He may be an option of ours in the 2nd, depending on what happens in the first.

I believe that too
I am going off the mock draft but I feel he is a solid second rounder.

Sorry this is random and completely unrelated to football
But pantherboy can you go over to ROF and tell everyone I have been banned for my arguments with MichealProcton last night. Sorry I dont mean to clutter your post (very nice options by the way) but I have been trying to find someone who posts at ROF to let everyone know so that they dont think I just left, and let them know I wish them all the best. Thanks.
Just curious...
But why would you waste your time with the trouser stain to begin with?

I may not always be right, but even a blind nut finds a squirrel every once in a while.
He kept saying Kemba Walker and Biyombo sucked
He would even throw Cam in there when he wanted too and that really just got all over me
It's hard not to
He’s not really a beacon of optimism and good spirits. And he’s very condescending.
Well that not how Ben feels
I know I can be vulgar when arguing with MP but I said I would calm down on it. But he never gave me a chance to do that so yeah. He sent me a warning last night about it, and then when I commented to him saying that I was just debating with him I wasnt even being rude he never commented back so I went to bed. Then when I woke up this morning I logged on and I had been banned.
Can you just tell everyone what I asked pantherboy to say?
Because even though I let my temper get away from myself I did enjoy my time there and I never got to say goodbye to everyone.
Why don't you email the admin at ROF and ask to be reinstated?
It’s worth a shot.

Yeah I'll say something
I hope Ben lets you back. If he does, I recommend you use Google Chrome and use this extension.
It hides what certain users say and all comments in those sub-threads. It’ll probably be easier to restrain yourself if you just couldn’t see what they were saying.
Sorry that happened Bro'? I don't think you deserve...
a lifetime ban.

I know...he used to be here.
Key words: used to.

Atleast you guys were smart enough to get rid of him
Its one thing to critical but another to just be plain unreasonable and ignorant.
He'd be a cancer if he were still here
The Panthers have come up on occasion over there. He is still dead set that Cam Newton is nothing more than a good fantasy QB and thinks he and the rest of the team were failures because the team didn’t make the playoffs.
What most people fail to realize...
Is that he thrives on pissing people off. He gets an orgasmic experience out of it. He lives to troll people, regardless of who it is or what the topic is he’s trolling on. He doesn’t care.
The fact that people constantly argue with him lets him win. The best way to deal with him is to act as if he doesn’t even exist, and then his need will no longer be fulfilled, and he will quietly go away.

Ben the manager at ROF doesnt think he does anything wrong
And thats why I got banned pretty much. Its what ever the management and atmosphere is much better anyway.
I can't really help you there since I don't post at ROF...
But if the blog manager thinks you’re in the wrong then there’s not much you can do unfortunately. Perhaps you could try the “I promise to stay away from him” approach and see how it goes.

So close but still cant chose
Put Russell Wilson and Brandon Boykin in the same draft and I would go insane with glee (and not the awful dancing and singing kind that makes me want to stab someone.) If the panthers pick up both those players I would declare this the greatest draft of all time (for me personally)
I went with two. I didn't particularly like either, but two provides the biggest impact for next year.

There is no way we will go out on a limb and take Jenkins at CB from Florida with are first pick. The rest of the #2 draft is ok but it also looks a bit one-sided. Honestly the #1 draft IMO addresses more needs and from the past would be a more likely way that we would go. I do say that with Wilson at QB and Quick at WR that sounds veeerrrrry NICE!!!!
alshon may be slipping, but I don't see him slipping that far

With a bad combine, he will fall that far. We shall see.

I don't know what he's expected to run....
but if I had to guess, I would say 4.6, give or a take a few one-hundredths.
by Derek Leazer on Jan 28, 2012 10:22 AM EST up reply actions
I don't see us or want us to take Russel in the 4th.
We should be able to pick up another player that would have a greater impact than being the lifetime #2 QB. If he was there in the 5th or 6th, I could live with that.
