Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

UPDATE: Now official: After finalizing a five-year deal, the Buccaneers officially have hired Greg Schiano as their next head coach.

Bucs have informed other candidates they are in process of hiring Greg Schiano as head coach. Deal not quite done but barring a last minute reversal a la Chip Kelly last week, this will be finalized shortly. Tampa had the last head coaching opening.

BREAKING NEWS!

Chud has been hired to be the CEO of Kick Ass Sports Inc.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.

I’m resigned to the fact that chud is gone at some point, but do believe that having him for another will benefit cam and our offence for the future. don't you care about chud at all b-dub you heartless bastard ?? Lol

lets give chud a raise

and maybe a 3 year contract and the title of assistant head coach. that way he will be here for all of cams contract or at least if someone comes calling we can get some compensation for him. im not sure of the rules on that but i would like to see us get picks for coaches instead of just giving them away ala jack del rio.

by pantherz1fan8 on Jan 26, 2012 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

After next season it will be about what Cam did, not what Chud did for Cam.

So I’m not sure it’s necessary to pay him more than we need to—meaning we could probably keep him on his current contract. But I would not be opposed to adding some years to it…

chud isnt going anywhere soon

Look how many tries it took Rivera to get a head job and he had top ds every single year. Until chud can put togeter a few games where his offenses play four quarters he will be a oc. If the giants ever actually let Coughlin go there will be bigger names out there to fill that spot heck the d coordinator on that very team would be a good one.

I’m glad that Chud isn’t leaving. On one hand you have to be worried for our team. On the other, you remember that most owners won’t hire a head coach from a losing team because he won’t want fans to say “Oh wow! We hired the offensive coordinator from the Carolina friggen Panthers. Woot. We are so boned.”

It’s the advantage of being a fan of this team. You pay closer attention, so you know when you’ve got something good. The rest of the sports world don’t know.

You're probably right about their regression...

But he still took shit and turned it into gold.

Now, we’ll probably see over the next few years that the layer of gold will wear off and it was just a pile of shit dipped in gold plating all along, but it still doesn’t take away from what Schiano was able to accomplish during his tenure at Rutgers.

He averaged 6 wins per year from 2001-2011...

That includes the first two years when he was playing with guys he didn’t recruit while building his program. Rutgers only won 6 games twice in the 15 years prior to him being there. If you take out the first two years (to give him time to build a program), the average wins goes up to 7, which means he took a program that couldn’t even win 6 games and over a 9 year period turned them into an above .500 team.

Now, I don’t think he was the best hire, but it’s not that he’s a bad coach…he was able to turn Rutgers into a respectable program again, which should be noteworthy.

Didnt he have experience as a head coach ?

Maybe it wasn’t the nfl but I would say a head coach for college should be better than someone that was never a head coach at all. Look what Harbaugh did, he came in and took the 49ers to the playoffs his first year.

One one side we have Harbaugh

On the other we have Butch Davis, Lane Kiffin, Steve Spurrier… the list goes on.

Guys with NFL experience at any level tend to have more success than people with impressive college resumes but little experience at the pro level. Harbaugh is an outlier

Winslow wanted Chudzinski to coach the Bucs
In a Thursday interview with Adam Schein and Rich Gannon of Sirius NFL Radio, Winslow mentioned at least three times that he wanted Chudzinski. "I was really hoping for Coach Chudzinski who I was with at Miami and Cleveland," Winslow said. "But, you know, we got another guy in Greg Schiano who I know and heard he’s one of the best coaches people have been around. And he’s got a lot of enthusiasm and [is] real energetic so I’m excited, man."

But if I were them I would’ve hired Mike Sherman. He’s not a big name and it wouldn’t have been a sexy hire but how often do you get the chance to hire a guy with a near .600 winning percentage?
