Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

I don't have time to make an article about this right now, but this is a topic of discussion that should be worthy of note to all of you. In my opinion, it's a bad thing. Just last year Roger Goodell entertained talk of banning the 3 point stance. That's reason enough for me to not like him.

Hat tip to NX75649 for posting about it in the sidebar as well.

we arent supposed to like him hes like the principal for the nfl but..........

How can you say he got rid of touchdown celebrations? I am pretty sure Cam has been doing the superman thing all season and not punished for it. He serves the will of the owners if it isnt him it will be someone else.

I may be in the minority, but I think he's done a pretty good job thus far.

Other than the TD celebration rules, I don’t he a big beef with him. This is coming from the guy that hates Stern, Selig, and Bettman. I definitely think he’s done the best job out of those guys.

i agree

Rules might favour offence which I really don’t like, but I don’t see what choice goodell had. Any commissioner would have had to increase player safety. He pisses off the steelers on a regular basis which I enjoy. He also did a good job this past off season facilitating the new cba. I don’t think people can be too harsh on him. Everyone still celebrates touchdowns anyway

I don't really care for him

Personally, he should take a page out of NASCAR’s book. For a couple of years NASCAR wanted less control from the governing body. NASCAR and Brian France listened and let the drivers go out and have fun. They should do the same with the NFL.
Let them play, hit, and celebrate how they want.

Goodell's NFL is only good for QBs and WRs.

I miss seeing receivers get their bells rung, it used to take balls to go across the middle; see Steve Smith.

yeah the ratings have plummeted from they were 10 years ago

but they have rebounded a little bit because of the positive changes they have made. I just wish the NFL would make some changes as well

by PantherPlane on Jan 25, 2012 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

It's like a lot of things- it makes sense economically, if nothing else

I do feel like Goodell has bastardized the league with the installation of stiff fines, celebration penalties and an often inconsistent personal conduct policy.

However, the flipside of this is that he has helped broker two extremely good TV contracts, a new uniform deal, expanded the NFL globally, got a new CBA through that retained parity and perhaps most important- ensured every Sunday we can still watch the NFL on network TV.

Most of the time commissioners are best when they’re never seen or heard, but in the case of Goodell it’s what he’s done away from the cameras and microphones that is the most impressive.

by James Dator on Jan 25, 2012 5:06 PM EST reply actions

I agree with you on the economic points.

That being said, it is important that the NFL continue to bring an excellent product to the field. Roger Goodell’s rather jingoistic policy of removing contact from the NFL will catch up to him if they continue to make moves ‘in the interest of player safety’ and removing physicality from the game. People watch the NFL for the players and the tough hits almost as much as they want to see touchdowns and see their team win. A watered down product will lead to less viewership and the NFL’s growth in recent years will invert itself and start to decline.

Currently we have a nice happy medium. Great passing teams will make the playoffs every year if they have a good QB, decent receivers, and a good offensive line. However, it is important to monitor these recent rule changes on a year to year basis since the changes are still pretty recent. If the NFL coaches adjust to the rules in such a way to where every team is scoring touchdowns on every possession because the corners and safeties can’t do their job, the NFL will have to change the rules again or risk losing their viewership since the touchdown loses it’s significance. If a team can score on every possession, why cheer when your team scores? It’s par to the course.

If Goodell does something silly like remove the 3 point stance like we heard discussions about last year, it will become a PR disaster that will end the league’s popularity in the twinkling of an eye since it’s easily noticeable. I’m all for player safety and I’m all for a smart man moving the economics of the league along. However, you have to have something to sell for people to buy. That is what worries me most. That by the time Goodell is done with the NFL, he’ll have installed stuffed pillows inside NFL jerseys.

ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.

I would like it better if he removed that stick that is lodged so far up his ass regarding celebrating...

not too mention he needs to reverse course and stop with this insane neutering process of defense in the name of “good health”; there’s a big difference between looking out for player safety, and effectively neutralizing the most entertaining aspect of the game….

It will change if they stop buying tickets

However, when a crappy Bucs home game that wouldn’t avoid blackout can sell over 80,000 tickets in Wembley stadium it’s a hard sell to move it out of London.

by James Dator on Jan 25, 2012 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly...

When was the last time the Bucs actually sold out a game? They couldn’t even do it last year when they had a decent season.

oi

If american fans can’t be bothered to go and watch their teams play why shouldn’t we be allowed? I would have thought you’d be proud that to exhibit your sport to other countries and have it receive such a strong fan base. Wemberly sells out every time… 80,000… Players have said they enjoy coming over and the atmosphere is insane. I would love to see the panthers come over! It would be amazing. The international games are awesome.

All this talk about a london based franchise is just that….. Talk. Its a different sports cultural here. Once we pick a team that’s a your team. I would support a london team… I’m a panthers fan, and I reckon the same goes for a lot of english fans. If the panther franchise changed to another city and another name I probably wouldn’t follow an nfl team anymore. + all the time zone issues would make it really impractical.

I don't have a problem with one game being there.

As you said the talk of making a London team is what I don’t like. There are other American cities that would be glad to have the Bucs or Vikings or whoever. I think it’s cool y’all (British) get to see a game live. No problem there. But to me it seems like Soccer in America. I’ll watch some, but I could care less about Wayne Rooney and his hair plugs. I just don’t want the NFL to become “too big to fail”. Also F goodell’s new rules on defense.

Most british fans don’t want to watch the london whoevers at wemberly, they want to watch the team they’ve supported for however long.

Just out of curiosity

How did you become a panthers fan living in the UK?

by hey. on Jan 25, 2012 9:40 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

jon beason saved my brothers life from a burning car wreck

Honestly, I started watching football the year of the panthers first season…. So it was the jags or the panthers. Let’s face it your not NOT gonna support carolina are you? I was fairly young though and I’ve only seriously started watching it all the time in the last 8-9 years or so. Most people I know in england are pats, phins or steelers fans (go figure)

Liked Goodell to begin with

But have slowly despised him more and more. He tends to suck the fun out of everything.

I just wish he'd give us the endzone celebrations back but

Ban celebrations in the middle of a drive. I’m tired of seeing someone break dance for getting a 5 yard rush

yeah, the TFL dances are getting dull as well.

if it’s a game winning TD, anyone should be able to bring in Steve Vai and rock out to guitar hero. screw the prop rule, let them live it up and and entertain.

I just want them to speed the game up

I don’t care if they break out into a dance scene from westside store every touch down, as long as they line up for the kick off in 30 seconds
