Maybe Free Agent NT Pat Sims Isn't Very Good?
Many of us have suggested Bengals Free Agent NT Pat Sims (6-2, 325), a big NT with some pass rush ability, but maybe he's just not that good?
www.walterfootball.com/freeagents2012DT.php
WalterFootball.com has just posted their complete position rankings for all 2012 Free Agents, and Pat Sims is only rated as the 33rd best Free Agent DT, receiving a grade of 1 1/2 stars (out of a maximum of 5 stars). Here are some of the other Free Agent DT's they rank who may be of interest to Panthers fans.
Ranking - Grade - Position - Name - Age (as of Sept 1st) - Current Team - Additional Info
2. - 4 Stars - NT - Paul Soliai - Dolphins - 28 - 2011 Franchise Tag salary $12.3 million.
8. - 3 Stars - NT - Sammie Lee Hill - 25 - Lions - A RFA (Restricted Free Agent).
10. - 2 1/2 Stars - DT - Derek Landri - 28 - Eagles - A good inside pass rusher, a Panther in 2010, not re-signed.
11. - 2 1/2 Stars - NT Antonio Garay - 32 - Chargers - "No longer the player he once was".
13. - 2 Stars - DT Amobi Okoye - 25 - Bears - 4 sacks in 2012.
33. - 1 1/2 Stars - NT - Pat Sims - 26 - Bengals.
It's a long list, 48 Free Agent DT's, with ex-Panther Nick Hayden ranked last. They have a brief write up about each player, and if you follow the link you checkout their other position rankings as well (Dan Connor is their 4th best ILB I believe).

Addressing the NT/DT position isn't the way to go in FA
I think that if we bring in a defensive FA it should be a DE. I read a piece on Bleacher Reporg that had suggested we offer a deal to to Robert Mathis. It could be a good short term solution but maybe the way to go is to draft our talent. That should keep injuries down, salary under cap and provide a long term player to one position. Carolina needs a solid defensive lineman just like they have solid linemen on the offensive front.

Would LOVE Robert Mathis.
Productive, experienced end that could mentor our young DE’s.

Correction
It wasn’t Bleacher Report that had suggested acquiring Mathis, but Peter King in the January 16 issue of SI.

Landri was with the Eagles last season—not the Lions. Meh. It’s Walter.
I like to think of myself as a one-man wolfpack.
It's just one person's opinion
So take it with a grain of salt.

I don't find Walterfootball to be very accurate with their player evaluations.
They tend to regurgitate experts ill-advised opinions based on silly biases.

I agree with this sentiment, and ergo feel compelled to rec it. Walter is one of the last places I look (ahead of Bleacher, of course)
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.

Russ Lande, at sportingnews.com is good on his player talent reviews, but is horrible in his draft position rankings. ProFootballWeekly has that same problem. NFLDraftScout.com (www.cbssports.com) is better, but their draft rankings jump around too much, for no aparent reason. A great example of that is Houston’s OLB Sammy Brown (6-2, 240, 4.67-40, with 14 sacks, 30 TFL’s the most in the FBS, and 88 tackles), in their last 3 rankings (around 2 weeks) going from around #250, to #227, and droping to the 280’s yesterday.
Personally, I kinda like WalterFootball.
That doesn’t mean I listen to or believe everything they say on the website, but it does give out a lot of information.

I like the website too.
I just prefer to cross-reference his stuff with other sources, but I kinda enjoy the “assholeness” he has about him.

I wish we could sign Sammie Lee Hill, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.
