PrintWith no Monday Night Football tonight I thought we could still use an open thread to discuss today's bowl game action including tonight's Fiesta Bowl between Stanford and Oklahoma St. WR Justin Blackmon could be on the board when the Panthers pick at 8-9 so let's see what this kid does on the big stage. Of course Stanford will be led by potential #1 pick Andrew Luck.

I actually watched the USC Nebraska game today and I have to admit I was extremely impressed by Alshon Jeffery. I still think we should take Dre K or Claiborne no matter what but if both of those guys are gone when we pick, it wouldnt be hurt my feelings one bit if we took Jeffery. He made an INSANE catch off a hail mary pass and his overall performance was extremely impressive, I was also imoressed by Alfonzo Dennard in that game.
Again if Dre K is there we have to take him.
I don't like Alshon. Always tripping on his face, always dropping balls in the end-zone just for the refs to give him the touchdown anyway to 'make him feel better.'
He is nothing like Jacoby Ford.

Yea, the only negative I saw from Alshon was his speed, on that long pass play Alshon had where he was brought down at the 1, you could clearly see he doesnt have top end speed, man he is such a physical freak and is going to cause huge mismatches, I think his performance today sealed top 10 status imo. Wouldnt suprise me one bit if Jags got him.

I can see why he was ejected...but the DB threw two punches...all Alshon did was shove him in the upper chest/chin.

Can’t pimp him too early! We’ll need him for a National Championship year! I’m not even gushing when I say that he’s almost a lock to be in the Top 5 consideration for the Heisman Trophy next year. The guy….oh my god Jack. He’s the best chance in a long time to have a WR selected #1 overall in the draft.

Without him, I can honestly say we would have lost. The kid is that big of a clutch game-changer.

The ACC has some pretty good teams too.
Virginia Tech would have gone unbeaten if Clemson hadn’t been on their schedule. We beat them TWICE.
Quality of teams faced is overrated. You’ve still got to catch the ball and make the play. Sammy Watkins can do it and do it well.
Besides, Alshon plays in a better conference with a BEAST of an offensive line giving his QB plenty of time. We don’t have that yet.

Actually our OL was only good with Kyle Nunn, who got injured early in the season and came back today only
Watkins dropped key passes vs us in primetime.
VA tech also played NOONE. Pansy of a schedule, they are overrated as well.
Va tech is a fringe top 25 at best and the only other better than average team in that conference

Until now, I thought Alshon was a more dangerous WR. Blackmon is quicker and stronger than I thought.
Alshon still gets the edge on the goalline and has softer hands, but Blackmon will be a threat from endzone to endzone. His YAC ability is BANANAS!

i am still of the belief that Jeffery will be a better at Tight end and be unstoppable at that position
every elite offence has one guy that is just unstoppable and he could be unstoppable at TE/WR type shannon sharp role

I like Jeffery because when i think about My Lions trying to match up vs him ....
we don’t have a guy that could stop him on any jump ball situations :(…nor a backer who could stay with him…nor any safeties that could cover him… :( alot of teams will be in that same boat. He is just different that Blackman…
i do think that all the really good offenses have good jump ball threats in some fashion… Gram.. Megatron… Gronx.. Finley …Andre Johnson…etc

He was going to add elements of it, but we are going to stay as a base 4-3. Sean McD isn’t a 3-4 guy anyway… although Rivera I believe does have experience running one.

Not really… the Packers D has been awful this year. Their prolific offense has been the reason why they have won. Granted they have forced a lot of TO, but they have allowed over 5000 yards total if I am not mistaken. Just because it is a 3-4 doesn’t mean they are a superior defense.

Wow, i know this sounds absloutly crazy, but should we move up for Blackmon?!? ill be perfectly honest, I only liked Blackmon a lot because of his stats because I never really saw him play, but after seeimg him tonight, wow. He is amazing, a guaranteed top 3 pick. I wouldnt break the bank, but trading two 2nd rounders and maybe a 4th could be reasonable.
I really liked his play tonight.
But, as much as I would love to have him, I have to just remind myself of the Saint’s game. The defense was terrible, and we NEED to improve there to be a legit contender. I love the idea of having a receiver on our team ready to take the reigns from Smitty, but we might be able to get that later.

seeing us struggle on the 3rd downs in our last two games, I think we need to give Cam some help. We were 0-11 on 3rd downs in 2 weeks. That’s not acceptable against the saints. This kid is very strong and I believe he will be a reliable blocker.
However, we have Lafell, Gettis, and even Pilares who are all reliable. So I’m not saying we should trade up for him. I think we simply wait to take the BPA at our pick. I don’t want to trade up or even trade down. I like our chances of getting Blackmon, Claiborne, or Kirkpatrick with our pick.

Just the thought of Martin(I think it was him, if not my apologies to Mr. Martin) giving up that touchdown with 16 seconds left in the half is stuck in my mind. I’m not sure how long it will take me to forget that moment. His one job was to not let someone behind him, and instead they scored and took the momentum into half, which is something they never lost. Keep in mind, we don’t really know the ceiling on Gettis or LaFell for that matter. LaFell seems to be pretty clutch thus far.

I was very upset as well. For this reason, I want to draft a CB. But if Hurney decided to take the plunge on Blackmon, I wouldn’t be mad. We can definitely use him but we HAVE to go after another DB in free agency.

The draft going this way
Would make me sad, as the only players I am really sold on at the moment are Dre, Claiborne and Blackmon. However, It does make sense going this way. I just have to put faith in our front office to make the right decision at that point.
Yea the 8th pick is a dead zone.. Maybe im wrong, but so far from these bowl games Jeffery and Blackmon are the only 2 that grabbed my attention. Both Michael Floyd and Dwight Jones disappointed and from what ive heard, Zach Brown and Coples didnt look so hot and Devon Still looked meh today.
Unfortunatley we could possibly be in that wasteland with the 8th pick with Dre K, Kalil, Jeffery, Claiborne and Blackmon all gone and I really dont see a O lineman making a hige difference.. Its either reach for a defensive player or trade up to get a stud WR in either Blackmon ir Jeffery. (if only we lost another game or 2 so we could have sneaked in the top 6) oh, crap did I type that out loud? Lol

I will say
We needed all of the wins we got in my opinion, I am glad we are where we are. That being said, Floyd didn’t have a great day, but I tunneled him in the game and he did pretty decently. Had a great TD grab, but another drop that killed. ND as a team played sub-par, and it hurt his play.
I would trade down
Pick up J. Jenkins or Z. Brown

I don’t think we’re in a dead zone. You have to realize the top 10 always has surprises. Just think Jake Locker last year. I’m sure Blackmon, Claiborne, or Kirkpatrick will fall to us.

To be fair,
He just blew up in the bowl game. There could be some surprises. Or, someone could blow at the combine.
What Blackmon did in the bowl game epitomizes his entire season
But PT thinks that we are like the Falcons last year where our “missing piece” is Blackmon. We cannot give away picks. We need to learn to collect picks like the Patriots. They somehow have enough picks to draft a whole new roster each year.
We have way too many gray areas on defense. Sure, we’re getting people back. But are they going to come back the same people we grew to love? I’m not very optimistic about signing quality defensive free agents this off season. This draft must be geared toward defense.

The Pats have to be wanting to cash in soon.
They have too many picks to just sit on. And we do have a lot of gray areas, I for one am hoping Rivera and crew can straighten it all out in the offseason.
It will take more than 2 2nd rounders and
maybe a 4th rounder to move from 9th to 2nd or 3rd overall. Next years 1st rounder will have to be involve as well. They need to keep the picks.

Andrew Luck was too good to be a Panther. He stayed in school and the media put him on a pedestal higher than Jesus. Glad he lost the Heisman, glad he lost the Fiesta Bowl. Cam Newton won a Heisman AND led Auburn to an undefeated season and National Championship but the gurus said he would be a project player and that he didn’t have the mechanics or smarts to be a good NFL QB but Luck can walk on water. I absolutely love double trouble
But Stew has been just as productive as Deangelo as a rusher and a much more prolific receiver. I love having them as a tandem. But with our offense, we are barely using them. I kinda want to trade Deangelo. If we could get a 2nd or 1st round pick I would definitely be on board. I just don’t know if teams will want a RB this old with a huge contract. What is the use if they’re both getting on average less than 10 carries a game. Stew has excellent strength, excellent speed, excellent receiving skills, and excellent blitz pickup skills. I think he would be a pro bowler if we traded Deangelo. Our defense really needs help and the value we could get for Deangelo could be very useful for immediate success.
I think everybody is being a little bit too reactionary with Double Trouble
They didn’t get as many carries as we’re accustomed to seeing over the course of the season, but as the season went on we got more balanced. And do we all really think we’re going to keep calling 10 designed runs a game for our franchise QB for the remainder of his career? I sure don’t think so. As the team improves and we have more leads to protect, Double Trouble will get closer to the touches we’re used to seeing. On top of that, I don’t think Cam will be calling his number as much as he grows as an NFL QB.
For example, let’s assume we start to phase out the designed QB runs to protect Cam. If we cut Cam’s run total in half, and split the remaining carries between Double Trouble, they’re both threatening 1,000 yards rushing.
Even this year DWill and Stew finished with 971 and 1174 yards of total offense respectively. The benefit of them splitting carries like they have keeps RB from being a team need (leaving us open to deal with other needs) for several years as their careers will be extended by the lightened workload.
It also helps to keep both players healthy
Another advantage is that if one gets an injury, we still have the other.
Ideally I love having Double Trouble.
I just think DeAngelo is overpaid. And it will be difficult keeping both if Stew wants the same kinda money.
