Panthers approached formally by Jaguars to interview OC Chudzinski

In a move that should surprise no-one, the Jacksonville Jaguars have formally requested to interview offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski for their head coaching position. While the Jags are the only team who have been vetted by local writers, I'm told there are at least three other teams who have tabled similar requests to the Panthers including Miami, St. Louis and 'one other' who I'm lead to believe may be Buffalo, though that would obviously be pending the firing of their current coach Chan Gailey.

A coordinator like Chud will likely be the hottest commodity on the market for a team looking to go the coordinator route, rather than the established coach route. As we know he took an abysmal Carolina Panthers offense and turned it into one of the league's best, and was instrumental in setting up schemes that would allow for Cam Newton to be successful out of the gate.

The fact is, good teams have their coordinators poached, so the fact we're seeing Chud mentioned in this manor should be proof positive that this front office knows how to find coaching talent. I also have faith that they knew how close Chud was to being on the cusp of a head coaching offer and as such prepared a backup plan should he leave. I also wouldn't rule out a Jerry Jones-esque play to keep him as OC by throwing money his way, though that seems a little too far outside the lines, and also assumes Chud doesn't care about being a head coach. It's important to note that Jason Garrett was retained by Dallas based on the tacit understanding he'd be next in line as the Cowboys head coach, the Panthers aren't in the position to make such an offer.

With all things time will tell. Hopefully Chud will stay, but if he doesn't I have faith Hurney and Co. have the wheels in motion to snap up another coordinator- thankfully Cam is adaptable.

I don't like this, but I understand if Chud takes the job.

If Chud leaves, hopefully, we can minimize the damage and promote Shula to the OC.

Dream scenario if Chud leaves is hopefully Nory Turner comes over, assuming he gets canned. We have so many SD connections, not to mention his son works for us.

Depends on the relationship between BAMF and Turner. Would Norv be willing to work for his former DC? Maybe.

It would make sense, if Chud leaves.

just because he was a disciple, does not mean he can run the scheme anywhere near as well as Johnson did; I’ll give him a slight pass for this season almost solely because of injury, but I’m not convinced he’s the answer at DC for us based on his work this season and prior with Philly

I didn't say he is Jim Johnson...but he runs the same scheme.

You said his schemes weren’t proven to begin with…Jim Johnson’s scheme is one of the most effective defensive schemes in the last 25 years. McDermott hasn’t quite grasped the nuances of when to call blitzes, but it’s the same defense.

Plus, he deserves a pass this year solely because of injury. We didn’t have the LB corps and the secondary to blitz the way the scheme demands. Again, you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken shit.

Integrity first. Service before self. Excellence in all you do. -- USAF Core Values

by Disciple of Carolina on Jan 2, 2012 2:48 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Eeeee~ This is not good. Chud would have a lot of work to do in order to get the Jags off the ground. We’re talking about the WORST passing offense in the league. Literally no weapons at WR. The best target they got is a TE. On the other hand, you have Maurice Jones Drew.

The organization has made some head-scratcher moves lately too. The way they got rid of David Garrard after his back injury that would have kept him out 4-6 weeks to start the season screams “CHEEP!” to the highest magnitude and as a head coach, I would not want a general manager that removed such an essential piece of my offense like that.

If Chud wants to leave, he can find a lot of better places to go besides Jacksonville. They’re up there on that list of candidates to go if a team was to move to another city as well. That would be a rough road to travel.

ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.

I think Jax is hoping Chud is a young naive coach they can almost trick into coming there.

That team is in shambles, no offensive weapons, bad GM, and it’s up in the air where the team will even be in the next couple of years. if Chud is smart, he will stay away from that team, especially being a part of a team with a ton of potential for next year.

by chatoka on Jan 2, 2012 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

They have a very good defence though.

I’m sure someone like Chud would look at Gabbert and think “I can do something with him, he has all the tools”. Add a playmaker out wide (to compliment MJD) and a competent play caller and suddenly they’re a tough team to beat.

by Floods on Jan 2, 2012 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

It's one piece.

This is a deeeeep WR draft. It won’t be difficult to find an impact player in the first two rounds at WR. Chud would almost certainly turn the D over to an experienced DC and have a huge hand in the offensive side of things. If he’s smart that is.

Like I said, I’m sure Chud thinks that he could turn Gabbart around. That would be the draw – there’s no way he’s going in there thinking about drafting a replacement. Assuming he’s interested of course.

"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury

by OldhamA on Jan 2, 2012 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

They need more than one piece.

No WR prospect coming into the NFL is a sure bet. Also, as carolina panthers’ fans can attest, even if they strike WR gold, one WR is not enough to run an offense even if you have MJD. Jax also needs an upgrade at QB, whether that be improvement by Gabbert, a FA acquisition or a draft pick. They also need to retool their o-line a bit to help with pass blocking, though maybe having some open targets down field would reduce that need.
Chud’s not going to be able to walk in, pick up two tight ends in FA and flip that offense like a foreclosed property the way he did for us.

Oddly enough...

My roommate, who’s originally from Indianapolis and is a bit of a Colts fan, thinks the same thing, and honestly I think I could see it. I would have said QB coach originally, myself, but the fact is that Peyton would make a hell of an OC for Indy if he decides to stick around in the league after his QB career is officially done. Probably could take the next step to being a HC somewhere, given time and the chance to prove himself.

I know! That's what I'm saying. Might as well make Peyton the OC. What's the point? He's audibling at the LOS anyway.

And when Luck gets there and Peyton Manning retires, you have the complete opposite of what happened during the Brett Favre era. He’ll simply transition to the coaching ranks without a second thought. At the very worst, he can become the QB Coach. But with a QB so similar to him coaching the offense he left behind, Manning is set for the next 10-15 years.

It could be a great fit.

This is why I wouldn't coach the Jags if I was the Chud. Cut straight from an ESPN Article.

David Garrard lost his starting job the same way he got it: Just days before the season opener and in stunning fashion.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released Garrard on Tuesday, making a “pure football decision” that will save the franchise $9 million in 2011.

Whether it saves coach Jack Del Rio’s job remains to be seen. Team owner Wayne Weaver has said Jacksonville needs to make the playoffs for Del Rio to stick around for a 10th season. ((Never mind the state of the team! Make the playoffs NAO! Oh by the way, we’re cutting your QB. Lol!))

Del Rio made it clear late last season that he had grown tired of Garrard’s inconsistent ways, but the coach remained steadfast through training camp and the preseason that Garrard was his starter. That changed Tuesday, when the Jaguars parted ways with Garrard after nine up-and-down seasons.

If the timing of the move wasn’t strange enough — five days before Jacksonville’s opener against Tennessee — it came two hours after the team introduced Garrard as its starting quarterback at a kickoff luncheon at the chamber of commerce.

I mean cmon, how could you coach for a team that’s going to make knee-jerk reactions like that?

Hope he doesn't go but I understand if he does.

I’m sure most every coach in the NFL has aspirations to be a HC at some point and if you don’t take the opportunity when it’s available, it may never happen. But lots of guys will get interviewed and only a few will be hired. Rivera interviewed something like 9 times before being hired.

Apparently Rivera said in his presser that they may look to offer Chud an extension/raise if necessary to keep him here. Hopefully he will want to continue with what he’s started here instead of uprooting after 1 season after we finally got the system installed. A QB of Cam’s caliber can make coaches look good and Chud knows what he can accomplish with Cam running the plays.

As far as potential replacements Norv would be the best option if available, if not we need someone familiar with the system we run because I think this is the perfect offensive system for our personnel. Not sure about Scott Turner’s capabilitie,s but perhaps he could be given a look. I do think Shula may be able to effectively run the offense as he has experience, but I also agree that he may be best suited where he is.

Somebody’s likely to offer him a job with all the openings. I certainly hope not but it seems inevitable.

Who was it that was sitting next to him in the booth? Is it Norv’s son? He would seem to be the obvious choice to follow Chud since he was there every step of the way and could continue the philosophy.

I’m more concerned with McDermott. Wasn’t completely sold on Micky D when he came over and I’m less so now. Granted he was given backups to work with but man, his defense sucked the big one regardless. Wouldn’t be too upset if he got replaced by a Jeff Fisher or even a Raheem Morris.

As long as Shula doesn’t leave though, I’ll be okay with Chud going. I’d hate to see it, but still as long as Shula doesn’t go, I could cope. He turned Kyle Orton into a 4,000 yard passer, and makes Tim Tebow look good out there. With the worst pass blocking OL in football, and the worst collection of WRs it will behoove them to run a WCO and lean heavily on MJD until they get the protection and receivers to throw downfield more.

Chud’s system worked so well here because we already had an established OL and one elite WR… this allowed him to draw up a lot of long developing, deep pass plays that he simply couldn’t run in Jacksonville.

What chud has done here was amazing, but he had a lot of dominoes already set up. All he had to do was add some key elements and then everything fell into place. Hopefully the powers that be are wise enough to recognize the uniqueness of the situation.

Not to take anything away from Chud. He’s clearly a wizard of the x’s and o’s but if i owned an NFL team, I’d prefer someone with more seasons under his belt.

McDaniels turned Orton into a 4k yard passer.

I love how Mike McCoy never gets any of the credit...

Orton is a 4k passer… must be McDaniels
Broncos become a running team and succeed with Tebow… must be Fox

I love how people think McCoy is any good.

I'm not sure that Chud is on the top of the Jags list, but I dunno.

We’ll find out soon enough.

Cam Newton, when a reporter asks him who will win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday: "I'll tell you Sunday."

Chud still needs some work.

You don’t rush for 100 yards in a little over 1 quarter and then resort to the pass the rest of the game. He is clearly not calling plays to the best of this team’s ability. He should stick around and work on that.

Welcome to the Cam Cave

Wish him well

if he does leave, but I believe Cam will be fine. I think Newton made Chud look good more than the other way around, and there were some worrying trends in the second halves of games where it seemed like Chud could not adjust to whatever the defense had changed.

Cam is obviously very talented, smart and a hard worker, as long as the new guy (this is all speculative of course) doesn’t have some radical new system, the Offense and the QB will be fine.

Life is what you make it brothers....

just a question

is there not some kind of rule about hiring coaches under contract already? I want to say there is but i am just curious. i just hope he stays

Chudzinski deserves success

therefore he should never go to the Jags, which is a team that has and will continue to suck forever (hate to break it to the new owner, but jaxville just sucks for football)

I’ve heard Tampa fans asking for him and it’d be very upsetting to lose him to a divisional rival but he might find success there and I wish him the best if he chooses so

From what I've been told Tampa aren't interested

They want an established coach with former HC experience. They’re looking into guys like Jeff Fisher, Mike Mularkey etc.

Mike Martz Resigns as Offensive Co-ordinator of Chicago Bears

If Chud actually leaves, could Martz be in the running for OC for the Panthers?
