Panthers 10 year 2nd & 3rd round draft history
Now that the season is over, all I can think about is who we are going to sign in free agency and who we are going to draft. I've made lists of who I thought were good and bad picks for both 2nd and 3rd round draft choices. I've found that we've really missed the ball on all but 3 of our 2nd round picks since 2001 and we've selected very talented players with about 2/3 of our 3rd round picks. I hope this year we can start making solid picks all throughout the draft. I included players we traded away a 2nd round pick for or chose in the 2nd round for another pick. Let me know what you think of my choices posted after the jump.

I wouldnt put Marshal or Martin as bab
Neither are great but they are both (somewhat) decent players who are starters.

Yeah, I second that
I would put Marshall as ‘good’ and Martin as inconclusive so far.
Dick had his issues, but he was still a 5-year starter with 14 total interceptions. He wasn’t worth what Arizona decided to pay him, but he wasn’t a terrible corner.
yeah I had a tough time to determine where to put martin and marshall
But in the end I decided Marshall was bad because he wasn’t a full starter until his last 2 years.
Martin I put as bad because of both his regression from last year and his age. The kid is almost the same age as Gamble. I don’t see much if any improvement from him.

I agree with that...Marshall and Martin have been decent starters...that's all you can expect
Can’t expect elite players with every pick like our 2001 draft (Morgan, Jenkins, Smith)
interesting list
Evan Mathis is interesting though, he’s found great success in Philly now
lets not forget that we had 2 3rd round picks last year that werent so great
I gladly would have traded both of them to get a 2nd round pick (both then and now) I would be very happy if we had gotten Bowers, Austin, Paea, Harris, or Hudson
So, Hurney has been great in the 1st round, mediocre in the 2nd round, and decent in the 3rd round.

I don't think you can say mediocre in the 2nd
I would say he’s been pretty bad. I honestly think we got lucky kalil and jenkins slipped to the 2nd rd in the draft so they’re not “genius” picks.

I guess he has been so-so in the 2nd.
But as of late, He has been horrible with our 2nd round picks. i.e. Everette Brown, Jimmy Clausen, Armanti Edwards.

Looks approximately 50/50 to me...
Which I would think is natural. But to become a much more formidable, playoff contending team, we’ll definitely need to become much better drafters and make much more hits than misses in these crucial rounds!
If you look at any teams 2nd and 3rd round picks
You’ll find a lot of players that are cut within 5 years. Some of this is that the player does not develop well, Some of it is bad scouting, some of it is players from say the 5th round developing extremely well and taking their roster spot, and some of it is injury related.
I don’t think you’ll find any team that gets more than 65% of their 2nd and 3rd round players to turn into solid players for that team.
Very True.

I looked at the Patriots 10 year draft and thought about doing a write up showing their busts
Then I figured why bother. Suffice to say, there were a lot of names I didn’t recognize in their 2nd and 3rd rounds.
