Should The Carolina Panthers Trade Back In The 2012 NFL Draft

There are lots of options in this years NFL draft but

The panthers are to far back to draft a player like Justin Blackmon or Matt Kalil so here are some options at the 8/9 pick

Quinton Coples DE North Carolina Coples is a player that is very strong and fast but his production this year isn't exactly what you would want out of a player you would draft with the eighth or ninth pick

Dre Kirkpatrick CB Alabama Kirkpatrick is the 2nd best corner in this draft but he may be available in the middle of the draft due to getting arrested for having weed.

Jonathon Martin OT Stanford Martin is a beast at both pass blocking and run blocking but OT is not one of our main needs considering i think that Jeff Otah will be given one more chance to stay healthy and we have much greater needs on the defensive side of the ball

Now that we have seen who could be available at eighth/ninth pick lets see what could happen if we trade back

Star-divide

Possible trade Partner Cincinati Bengals who have 2 first round picks one at pick 17 and one at pick 21 and there we could pick two players such as Kirkpatrick who could still be available and Michael Brockers who will be available

Kirkpatrick will give us a good cover corner and a hard hitting sure tackler on the other side of Chris Gamble and that will allow us to put captain munnerlyn back at nickle corner and give us a much improved secondary

Brockers would give us a good DT th play next to Ron Edwards he can push the pile and tackle well he is a good run stuffer and can also pressure the QB I've heard people Say that if he were to stay in college he would have a Ndamukong Suh like impact for the LSU tigers.

So the addation of those 2 players along with Thomas Davis, Jon Beason, and Ron Edwards back from injurey will give us a much better defence then last year

I like the idea of getting two 1st rounders

What I would do with them.. Kirk and Z. Brown

by rscott94 on Jan 19, 2012 2:01 PM EST via mobile reply actions

same for Brockers

I give both about a 5% chance of happening

by pcroadrage on Jan 19, 2012 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

I think Tampa would get him first if he actually got that far, unless

one of the big recieving prospects fell to them instead.

If you get their two first rounds and can keep your 2nd then we would definitely be building a foundation for our the Panthers future…and the fans sanity.

Ditto.

I agree.

That’s why I didn’t participate in the poll. It’s not giving valid options.

How many DTs can you draft every year? Let’s get a vet or draft a NT.

by ieatcrayons on Jan 19, 2012 2:18 PM EST reply actions

I like Edwards and Shirley at NT

but if Poe was available in the 2nd than i might take him.

I feel like we are loaded at DT but Brockers (late 1st), Poe (2nd), and Wolfe (3rd) would all be viable options

I love Poe and that big guy out of washington Ta’amu

I like Pat Sims, Antonio Garay or even Antonio Dixon if the eagles don’t re-sign him.

by ieatcrayons on Jan 19, 2012 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't watch any Eagles games so I'm definitely being unfair here

But the idea of a DT from the Eagles doesn’t really strike me as a great choice. haha, just saying.

Dixon went on IR early but he’s been really good and would definitely be cheap.

There is very little chance of us getting Kirpatrick if we trade down,

even with the weed charge, a lot of teams would jump at the chance to get the #2 CB on the board.

every draft is different

richardson might be the only RB to go in the 1st round this year. 2008 had 5 go in the first round.

by Atlantapanther on Jan 19, 2012 10:28 PM EST up reply actions

and we got the best of the bunch that year

last year Ingram was the lowest the first RB of a draft has ever been drafted.

I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was

I normally despise the idea of trading away first round picks,

but I would be willing to consider trading our first rounder next year to creep back into the first round to get Z. Brown. Kirkpatrick and Brown in the same draft would be pretty awesome, and would fill two huge needs. The dream scenario would then be if Brockers fell all the way to us in the second, which is still decently possible at this point. I would literally pass out if we got Kirpatrick, Brown, and Brockers in the same draft.
Ends rosterbation after dramatic climax.

Only problem is trading our first-rounder for next year would possibly keep us from getting a big time reciever or big-time anyone else next year (hopefully it will be a low pick anyway.) Or the worst case scenario of all would be for Z. Brown to turn out to be the next Everette Brown, but I won’t jinx him like that.

I'm not wild about the Dre K pick.

I’m having Rashard Anderson flashbacks and that gives me SERIOUS reservations.
The arrival of Steve Wilks gives me a great deal of hope that the current defensive backs can finally be coached to actually tackle.
The talent IS on the team, it needs to be developed. I’m fairly sure R/R saw that this season and will be checking and evaluating before the draft with his staff.

by criolle on Jan 19, 2012 6:08 PM EST reply actions

If Management feels like Dre K will be a problem because of his recent arrest than it makes sense to trade back

There isn’t really anyone else that will be there that’s worth our pick unless Blackmon or Claiborne are on teh board when we pick, which is highly unlikely.

I wouldn’t mind trading back and gathering more picks as long as we take a good corner in the 1st or 2nd (MINNIFIELD PLZ!)

Trading back is almost always a good idea

And I even feel like we’ve got a solid potential partner to do it with in the Bengals. But we’re not getting both of their first-round picks. Their first and second round picks are much more realistic.

#17 & 21 for the 8 or 9 sounds like a good deal straight up

but at #9 you have a shot at an elite player in this draft if you figure out who that is…at #17 I’m not so sure.

To flip the coin Hurney may have a short list of players he would draft at 8-9 and decide on a trade back if they are all off the board. I like getting the 17 & 21 more than any other deal I’ve heard postulated, such as a 2nd and 2013 #1. The Bengals would prob want us to throw in a late round pick
