DE Whitney Mercilus (6-4, 265, 4.65-40), 16 Sacks & 22.5 TFL's
That’s if Mercilus gets by the Jaguars and Dolphins.
The 2 stories today, of CB Dre Kirkpatrick arrested for 20 grams (of less) of Marijuana, and Greg Hardy playing all season with an injured foot, make it almost a lock.
Yea.. Dont like Dre and the pot story. At this point I say Mercilus or Still

Greg Hardy playing with an injured foot does not equal taking Mercilus.
If you might remember he did have a motorcycle accident during the summer right before camp. He was on a boot for a couple of weeks yet I’m not sure if that might have contributed to the foot injury. However, I don’t take it as that big of a deal. In regards to the report, the most it did to my understanding was to provide a reason why Hardy wasn’t a bit more productive.
If the Panthers take Mercilus, it won’t be due to Greg Hardy’s injured foot.

Mercilus is not worth a top 10 pick. He is not the next Aldon Smith. He is not athletic enough or fast enough to play DE.

Aldon Smith is an incredible athlete...Mercilus isn't. DE isn't even a need
Panther Pride 'till I die.
We don't have good depth behind CJ and the Kraken.
And our Pass Rush this year was atrocious. I’d qualify DE as a need.

Absolutely not
It’s laughable that you suggest this.
Our problem was NOT pressuring the QB…
CJ, healthy Hardy, Keiser are a great 3 deep so far, we would be stupid to add a one year wonder rookie when he wouldn’t get close to starting. DT or CB on defense in the first.
Btw when PT agrees with you, you know you are wrong LOL

The panthers are in a tough spot in terms
of good value( defense I want). It’s funny how ppl uses college stats/ projected 40 yard dash times etc to say this player should be pick. What you did in college doesn’t determine success. Matter of fact who the hell was Whitney M before his break out year? He’s no Aldon Smith, so I don’t want to year comparison between the 2. I never brought in the hype from Dre K. Whoever is the panthers 1st round selection will have my support.

up doing the opposite half of the time any way.

With Kirkpatrick getting in trouble I can't even take a guess right now
But if I had my pick probably Reiff or Brockers.

Hell we might even go Alshon Jeffery for all we know at this point.. Don’t get me wrong I want D no doubt, but with all of us guessing that we will pick all these D candidates how do we know Hurney isn’t looking WRs?

From what I’ve read in the past, you wanted WR? Now D? Baffling.

Where did I say in that sentence I want us to take a WR? I said I personally want a defensive guy but for all we know Hurney could be looking at WRs..

notice...
I said the word past, I’ve also read in the PAST your love for blackmon etc. You’re just wishy washy man. Sit back and let our FO make the decision.

Not in that sentence
But you have said dozens of times “let’s just take a stud WR” and three hours later your saying “Dre K will be our pick no doubt.”

Just throwing some names out there
Claiborne, Kalil, Blackmon (if they fall in the draft), Kirkpatrick (if he handles himself correctly) Brockers, Brown (with good combine/pro day) and Reif
(I don’t necessarly want Blackmon but if he falls to us the kid has to much talent to pass up)
by rscott94 on Jan 17, 2012 9:42 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Oh absolutely
If Blackmon falls to us that would be an amazing selection. But outside of him even considering taking a WR is silly.

Quinton Coples, pass rush helps secondary. < proven fact. Can’t have enough pass rushers on the team. DTs can be found in later rounds, unless a Nstompakong Sun falls in our lap. Lets take notes from the giants, draft BPA which at our spot will be Quinton more than likely.

God we have some dense fans. We have an excellent 3 deep + rotation thus far. Unless getting a Clowney, ZERO REASON
To draft a DE. Was Keiser even drafted?
DT OR CB.

Is that what the Giants said?
Look at how they’ve stocked up on DL, and how well that’s paid off for them. I think we could do the same thing if Coples/Mercilus are still at our pick.
Yes I'm a dude.

Using a top ten pick on a position where we have three/four pretty good guys is stupid
When we have literally nothing at DT and beyond Gamble.

We probably aren't going to be able to sign Applewhite, so then it's down to three.
And Keiser is only a situational pass rusher, whereas we need another DE who can play on any down and cause pressure.

Hardy and Johnson are the every down DEs, and Keiser is the 3rd down situational pass-rusher
spending a top 10 pick on a 3rd/4th DE is stupid
Panther Pride 'till I die.
CJ & Hardy Are Over Used DE's, Who Were Too Tired For The Last 4-6 Games Of The Season To Be As Effective As Usual
Most starting DE’s only play around 75% of a teams snaps (or less), and Hardy was in the low 80’s.
Hardy was in a car wreck in college, and had to have surgery on his foot, if it’s the same foot he said today hurt him all season, that could mean trouble next season, but injuries happen all the time anyway.

I would feel much more confident
Plugging in a top ten DT on top of what we have instead of plugging in Coples and leaving what we have at DT. I don’t see him having much more success his first year than Hardy did this year. Just me though.
"What do want to say to those critics now?"

The problem is, there is no true top ten DT. Brockers isn't completely pro ready this year.
I agree, Coples probably wouldn’t put up Aldon Smith or Von Miller type stats, but his presence would provide a much needed reprieve for CJ and Hardy.

Your Certainly Right S of N, Panthers Tied For 25th In Sacks (31) & Forced Fumbles (12) But Mike Train Just Can't Understand That
Mercilus season totals are slightly over half the Panthers total sacks with 16, an 3/4ers of their forced fumbles with 9.
That he thinks the Panthers have “a great 3 deep” DE rotation tells us all we need to know about his lack of football knowledge.
The “Mike Train” must be an off the rails PT want-a-be. LOL

I do think its all but guaranteed we wont take Dre K. Look how fast Rivera kicked out that one guy we drafted last year after he was busted for the same exact thing. you cant kick one guy off your team because of pot and turn right around and draft a guy in the 1st round that did the same exact thing.. Unfortunatley scratch Dre K off the list.
I like mercilus, but right now my money is on Devon Still rockin the black and blue

Plus
These are young men Rivera is giving a chance. Talent plays a role but it’s also the fact that the expectations were set for the Carolina Panthers. They have showed that they will take a risk on players who have gotten in trouble; however, there are strict guidelines for being a Carolina Panther

My bet
Brockers in the first round and a corner in the second.
UNLESS someone drops inexplicably into our laps.
As for Dre Kirkpatrick, he seems to have smoked a multi-million $$$ joint Tuesday. If his judgement is that bad before he gets paid, what will he do when he lines his pockets?
