Dre Kirkpatrick arrested for marijuana possession
Potential 1st round pick Dre Kirkpatrick was arrested for possession of fewer than 20 grams of marijuana last night in Florida. This could potentially cause his draft stock to fall from what was almost a lock for the top-10 to the bottom of the first round, or worse -- out of the first round completely.

I think it was planted on him...
So we could stop wanting to draft Kirkpatrick an shift our focus to Ashlon Jeffery….

However, Brandon Hogan was a fourth round pick...
we could afford for him to turn out to be a potential pothead bust because the pick didn’t warrant much risk. Although, this is Kirkpatrick’s first offense that I’ve heard of regarding his conduct but it’s just stupid. Why would you get caught with weed at a time so close to the draft where it tends to reminisce upon people’s minds.
Cam was almost like a pressuring need because this franchise was in shambles and desperately looking for a franchise QB that could breath light back into it’s spirits. Everything checked out and thank god we got Cam but that situation is different because the need of such player IMO outweighed risk due to the circumstance. We don’t really NEED a CB in such a way.

Doubt we draft him anyway
Regardless, this doesn’t change my opinion of him any. Only difference between him and most of the draft class is he got caught.
The stigma of using weed is less than its ever been
We heard this last draft that if the NFL passed on every kid smoking week they would have few to pick from (and Tebow). Provided its a small amount and he wasn’t being reckless…the devil is in the details.
Not just the NFL
Could you imagine what the penal system would be like if everyone who ever smoked weed got caught doing it their first time?
The youth of our country would be decimated.
Considering 9 out of 10 drug arrests are for minor possession of pot IIRC, we're not too far off from seeing what its like lol
Nobody fucks with the Jesus! -Big Lebowski
Agreed the stigma is much less than years ago..
My issue is him getting caught. Doesn’t give me a good impression of his intelligence or decision making ability. That’s the reason he would fall pretty dramatically on my draft board. If you are going to break the law be smart at least.

You gotta be smarter than that Dre!! From when the season is over until draft day you are in the biggest job interview of your life! You can’t be making stupid choices at very inopportune times. Teams that were looking at him will probably be asking him about this a lot in combine interviews. Will be interesting to see what impact it has.

It Was Doublely Dumb Of Dre, 6 Weeks Before The Combine It Might Have Shown Up On The Combine Drug Test
by PanthersRoar on Jan 17, 2012 6:04 PM EST up reply actions
Probably not
He’s got very little body fat which would slightly inhibit the retention of the metabolites in his system and with a very high metabolism he would probably be fine within two to three weeks of the test even if he is a chronic smoker. For normal people it takes about a month for it to clear your system if your a chronic smoker and less then a week if you only smoke every once in a while.
Nah it'd be out after 6 weeks

If you're smart you won't get caught
And that its illegal is ridiculous, but I digress…
Follow me on Twitter at @JakeHumphrey91
Here's my take...
(Note: It’s always been my take, and it will always be my take.)
Smoking pot is illegal. However, I couldn’t care less if anyone smokes it, so long as they don’t do it around my kids (one’s 7 and the other’s 3) or in my house (I don’t allow cigarette/cigar smoking in my house either due to my kid being allergic to smoke). Do I think it should be illegal? No, I don’t…but it’s not up to me. And, the people who decide what should be legal disagree with me (whether they’re right or wrong is irrelevant).
But anyway…if you want to smoke pot…go ahead and toke to your heart’s content. However, don’t be stupid and get caught, especially when you’re trying to get drafted by an NFL team. Don’t keep the shit in your car…keep it at home, and smoke it in the privacy of your own home…that way, you don’t get caught.

Just saw your response, I had responded similarly above. Agree completely. This is why it is an issue for a team drafting him. Not the pot itself, the fact he got busted.

May not fall to the 2nd
But if we choose to trade back and are able to, it may present yet another option for us when we pick, which is always nice. Especially an option we were validly discussing picking without trading back!
Lets no draft him in the 1st Round
But if hes somehow there at the top of the 2nd and last to us lets get him! That way we would luckly have two first round quality players lol
Its CAMMY CAM TIME!!!!!
Well there goes that
If we cut Lawrence Wilson for possession (a sixth round pick) I’m confident in saying we sure as hell won’t use our top ten pick on someone with the same issue.
"What do want to say to those critics now?"
"Just sit back and watch the show." -Cam Newton
That doesn't really make sense. That is like saying that 6th round players that were put on the practice squad are as important/contribute as much as a first round pick.
That's not what I was trying to imply
If we cut a player that was given a tiny contract on NFL standards, why would we invest 10 million+ on a player with the same problem?
"What do want to say to those critics now?"
"Just sit back and watch the show." -Cam Newton
That statement has the same issue.
In order for it to make sense Lawrence Wilson would have to matter. But he doesn’t.
Finding a very important piece to the puzzle is a different story entirely. Personally I would draft someone smart enough not to smoke millions of dollars away in the first, and hope he falls to us in the second round (though I doubt we are that lucky.)
Call it a double standard if you like
But there’s a big difference between a likely first rounder and a sixth round pick on the practice squad.

If you’ve already drafted him, you give him another chance (or two… or three).
If you haven’t already drafted him, you have second thoughts about doing so.

Welcome to the 2nd round Dre!
Way to go! This is a huge warning sign for this guy. If he cannot control himself when he has the opportunity to make millions right in front of him, that is a monster slam on his character.
This is not a debate about the effects of weed or if it should be legalized. Fact of the matter is that the NFL suspends players for it’s possession and use, end of story. This guy really has to smoke it up to celebrate, party or relax? He is severely lacking in perspective. Bad news.

I'm extremely happy about this
I’m hopeful this little “incident” allows Dre to fall a little to us at the #8/9 spot, he’s a premier talent that got caught with a little bud a week after winning the National Championship and also knowing he only had 2 months to smoke it before the combine. Let’s get Dre!!!!
A 6’3 corner that’s fast and can make tackles, YES PLEASE!
I'm confused..
I said he makes tackles, as in he’s not afraid to come up and make a tackle, he doesn’t shy away from contact. I’m confused where James Anderson’s tackling ability found it’s way into my comment about a rookie CB and his ability make tackles.. Maybe I’m missing something, but I don’t think I am..
he's too slow anyhow
Glad he’s been an idiot, focus on somebody else now. I’m liking brockers more and more, hope nobody nicks him before us.

Kind of echoing a common sentiment on here
The act of smoking weed does not bother me. It’s common, and I don’t think it hinders a player to perform to his full capability. That said, it’s illegal. Whether it should be or not is a moot point. He will be suspended if this were to carry over to his NFL career. It’s not that he’s a proven pot smoker (because there are too many to count in the NFL already, it’s that he has shown enough irresponsibility to be caught with it.
yeah the getting caught puts him in the dumb pot smoker category. Im sure a large number in the NFL smoke but personally if i was a coach id rather my player be in his home relaxing with a lil green then out in public getting drunk and rowdy. Alcohol leads to a hell of a lot more trouble. Biggest concern with pot is getting caught.

I doubt this seriously impacts his draft stock.
Were this to happen in March or April, it might drop him significantly, but as teams begin to interview him and get to know him his stock will stabilize. Worst case scenario, he has a fall similar to Prince Amukamara.

But, Dre>Prince any day. Dre played in a better conference, had better coach’s, went to Alabama (may not mean anything to most, but it measures out when it comes to a league scout) I’m on my phone but prince came out as a junior correct? And Dre is also a junior I believe. I’d be interested in the stats. Sorry I’m high, just like DreK was.

Apparently this isnt his first time being busted
Due to the timing of this arrest and when his court date and senticing will be could have major ramifications. This is not a first offense so he may have to due jail time. Also once he is drafted he falls under the CBA and any conviction of guilt would put him in violation of both the leagues substance abuse and personal conduct polcies so he could be facing suspension also

That sucks he got caught.
I was hoping we will draft him with the 8th pick. 6"3 corner playing opposite of Gamble, who is 6"1. That could potentially be a BAMF duel at corner. The chances of Carolina drafting Dre is slim now, cus BAMF don’t tolerate pot smoking.
So… what do you guys think about picking Zach Brown OLB with the 8th pick? I think he is a faster Thomas Davis.. that’s right! I believe Brown will boost his draft status after the combine. I heard he runs a 40 in the 4.3 range. Plus he is a great tackled. I say draft Brown and get a CB in the second rd. What do you guys think??
