CSR OT Open Thread, Vol. 5

It's been a few weeks since the last time I did one of these, so I guess it would be a good idea to start up another OT Open Thread to give us a place to have our non-Panthers discussions, especially since there's not that much Panthers news to discuss now that our season is over, and we can really only handle so much draft talk before we start going insane.

Since it's been so long, here's a refresher course of the rules:

This is the place where you can talk about almost anything you want, and we prefer you start any off-topic conversations here to help keep the front page articles focused on the Panthers (after all, this is a Panthers site).

Please keep in mind that while this is an "open thread", the rules of CSR still apply. Play nice with each other, don't bring up politics and/or religion, and don't post NSFW images or use words that you wouldn't say in front of your mother. (Ok...we'll be lenient on the language...but let's try to keep the F-bombs to a minimum.)

Feel free to use this space as your "community cafe" so to speak, where you can discuss movies, music, tv shows, food, or anything else you want to discuss, so long as it adheres to the rules.

Also, please be sure to rec this thread so it stays near the top of the fanpost section to ensure everyone who wants to join in can easily locate it, and be sure to "unrec" the previous OT thread so it will disappear from the sidebar since it will no longer be relevant once this thread gets started.

Okay Panthers fans, this is now an off-topic open thread!

The content of these posts are those of the user/fan making the post only

I tried watching it

but the show gets reaaaal depressing like 3 episodes in and I couldn’t stick with it

We had Skins much sooner over here.

Obviously I believe the British one is better, And I’d recommend you watch that, very very good. particularly the first 3 series. After that it goes downhill, the 4th is alright but after that its just shite.

My favorite tv shows (in no particular order):

Glee (yeah yeah I know…get over it)
New Girl (Zooey is my dream girl)
Raising Hope
NCIS
Criminal Minds
The League
Big Bang Theory
Bones

Now that I think of it, they are in order of days they come on, lol.

I also watch Food Network a lot.

Shameless – awesome show with a mega hottie who gets naked a lot
Californication – it’s getting stale, but still worth watching
House of Lies – new show with Don Cheadle. They’re only 2 episodes in, so I’m still feeling this one out.
Angry Boys – also still feeling this one out, has some pretty funny moments, but I’m not huge on shows that revolve around one actor playing all the main characters.
Leverage – catching up on season 2, so I’m pretty behind, but I can’t stop watching this show for some reason.

This about the Chiefs?

It’s about how tight a ship Pioli is trying to run. Forcing team staff to keep window blinds drawn so they can’t see practices and allegations of phone-tapping and spying. It’s a pretty lengthy read, but I found it pretty interesting.

Also, (Sorry for the double post)

Anybody else see that Dwight Howard added the Clippers to his wishlist of teams to be traded to?

That shows a lot of dignity.

“Hmm, let me check the standings. Ooh look, the Clippers are doing pretty well. Send me over their so I can piggyback on the pieces they already have to get myself an easy ring.”

That’s what’s wrong with the NBA. There shouldn’t be any need for contraction, there’s just a poor distribution of talent throughout the league, partly because many superstars’ egos are too big to fit in small markets. It’s a shame.

I’d give it a 6.5 out of 10 but I’m a stingy judge.

by ERL on Jan 19, 2012 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

It was great

but then the commentary made me so angry.
No, Chris Collinsworth, you do not really admire the way Greg Olson plays the quarterback position.
Also, the key to every game cannot be homefield advantage.
For the love of God, when Gamble runs a TD in, don’t tell me he came up empty and led to a big play.

by Philipkcks on Jan 19, 2012 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

I've already tired of him praising Beason and Smitty at the start of every game.

The commentary is God-awful. On another annoying note there is a collarbone breaking epidemic in my locker room. I lost Double Trouble, Cam, TD and Turnstile to broken collarbones and im only in week 6

by jojoisthemann on Jan 19, 2012 4:22 PM EST up reply actions

I think they only said specific things about 2-3 players per team

I can understand that to a degree, but at least do 2-3 different variations on the same theme instead of the exact same opening every game.

by Philipkcks on Jan 19, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

every year they can just add more from the year before

by now, there would be a lot more commentary. but what i hate most is if i sim the extra point and kick off after a TD, and then when the other team has the ball on the first play of the drive, my offensive players are still on the field. i quit fighting it. i got interceptions with shockey, kalil and lafell. otah got a sack. whatever.

by usana_gaines on Jan 21, 2012 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

omg yes

have had season where i’ve lost 6-8 players with broken collarbones. One thing i hate is how QBs ALWAYS fumble. No matter how high their carrying rating is and no matter how they get tackled they will fumble everytime

by pcroadrage on Jan 19, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

I have the newest and he still fumbles constantly.

Not when he’s sacked though. Just when running. Which makes no sense

by jojoisthemann on Jan 19, 2012 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

not a problem in the pocket but he he starts running and a CB shoelace tackles him he caughs up the ball

by pcroadrage on Jan 19, 2012 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

I had Ray Rice in a franchise

He fumbled 1-2 times per game. Then after he fumbles it, the commentators will make note of it about ten plays later.

by JDeLong42 on Jan 19, 2012 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

i have but it can still be a problem

luckily this one lets you change rating (i try to do it as little as possible) so i went in and gave Cam like a 96 carrying rating (i wanna say it was like an 80)

by pcroadrage on Jan 19, 2012 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

Turn off injuries.

well if you have good depth and your teams worst player has a overall of 80 like mine

than you can make it through an injury.

thats one things that makes it less fun. I love playing tyrant GM but they make it to easy. I can have every player that i want in the NFL and have my team make up the entire probowl in just 2 or 3 years.

lol, you can do that to, or just edit their ratings by lowering there awareness to 0.

i dont even have to do that though. just trading picks and moving guys around is so easy.
btw, you can get som great players by moving their position. like taking a 3-4 OLB and moving him to DE (Merriman is a good one) or taking a athletic 4-3 OLB and moving him to SS (Lawson is good for this, can you imagine a 6-5 SS, lol) or taking a 3-4 DE and moving him to DT

Commentary on a long field goal
First Announcer: “He makes the long one with room to spare!”
Second announcer: “It really was, wasn’t it.”

When I recovered a fumble in the end zone as time expired the announcers ripped me for running up the score.

They also called a 3 yard non TD reception a huge gain.

It’ll probably be the equivalent of NBA Live 06. And that’s probably the reason EA made the deal with the NFL. They knew they were about to get passed up by the competition, so they eliminated it.

2K sports has always been better then EA. NFL 2k5 was brilliant. The first person mode was actually first person. view from inside the helmet. You only saw where you was looking. The physics were much better as well. Running tackling etc. EA mails it in ever year because people are going to buy it regardless if all it is a over hyped Roster update.

That's exactly why they did it

NFL2K5 was probably the greatest football video game of all time. Not only did it put the Madden franchise to shame, but they sold it BRAND NEW for $19.99!

It was a giant middle finger to the Madden giant, and really drew the ire of EA. The following year, EA spent a king’s ransom for exclusive rights, and so died the need for them to improve their product.

I, personally, have not played a Madden game since.

My favorite:

Gus: “And the PANTHERS take over with the ball on the twelve and the ball on the twelve.”

I once threw a HB Pass with Frank Gore that fell incomplete and Collinsworth went on to say “FRANK GORE… is really one of the most accurate passers in the NFL. Surprising to see him miss that throw.”

And it still has the 1990s commentary style where the players’ names stick out so badly in the middle of a sentence. Doesn’t flow at all.

pick up OHara as a FA (i think he is one at the beginning) and move him to RT

then move Otah to RG. Our O-Line is already pretty good but you can make it better

by pcroadrage on Jan 19, 2012 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

What difficulty are you playing on?

Cause if you’re on All Madden your O-Line becomes a bunch of turnstiles.

by JDeLong42 on Jan 19, 2012 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

No

You really can’t do anything about blocking, and it’s usually subpar. I find sweeps/pitches to be impossible to run because you are almost always met by 3-4 unblocked defenders on the outside. Can’t do bubble screens either because the receiver that’s supposed to block runs straight up the field and the DB just runs right past him. Also, if a defender is within 3 or 4 yards of you you won’t get the pass off because the tackle animations override the QB releasing the ball.

Also, on the defensive side of the line. If you use an elite DT like Suh, you can bull rush straight through the O-Line on every snap. The problem is 30% of the time you just fall on top of the guy that you plowed over, 30% you get sucked into another lineman and get blocked, 30% of the time the guy you blocked bounces off his back and continues blocking you like a weeble-wobble. 10% of the time it is actually effective.

by JDeLong42 on Jan 19, 2012 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

you can adjust the blocking

is an overall difficulty you can choose but you can also go into Player Skills and CPU Skills and adjust some settings like reducing the CPUs pass rush or raising player team blocking

I know that's good

What I meant to say was that only about 10% of the times that you successfully penetrate result in positive plays. The other 90% of the time you get past the initial blocker, they either hop back up or you get sucked over to another blocker before you can make a play.

It’s still beyond silly, but it looks like it was actually the administrations way of saying, we don’t need sops/pipa to combat piracy(I personally think all IP claims are bogus anyway, and that what they’re calling piracy shouldn’t be illegal anyway, but that’s another topic entirely).

I think you read into that the wrong way

As a former military cop, we had to abide by laws established by the Constitution, local laws and follow the procedures outlined for due process. However, you said detain. Anybody who is authorized to enforce laws and such can detain someone. It does not have to be military. Example, the odor of pot emanating from a vehicle is considered probable cause and can be legally searched. Therefore, detainment is necessary. In the end, civil rights/liberties will not be stepped on, unless a law enforcement agency is prepared to have a civil suit filed against them. Ok, that just gave me a headache.

People can be detained indefinitely, while never being told what they’re charged with, without being able to defend themselves at all, on the suspicion that they’re terrorists.

However, I think there is a statue of limitations on how long someone can be held without charges being filed. I know some agencies can detain people without cause for up to 48 hours. Like you said its a slippery slope and ultimately it comes down to each, individual agency.

There is no statue of limitations.

Believe it or not, the Bill of Rights have been thrown out the window with the National Defense Authorization Act. Before this bill was passed, the Patriot Act allowed the United States to capture anyone on foreign soil and hold then for an indefinite amount of time, without trial or any due process, in Guantanamo Bay. A lot of Civil Rights groups had a problem with that, but most Americans didn’t care since we were all citizens and therefore the Patriot Act didn’t include us.

However, the NDAA expands the battlefield on foreign soil to include the ENTIRE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. That’s right. According to our government, there is some kind of invisible war being fought in our sewer system. The Ninja Turtles and Captain America are up against the hordes of Chinese Communists deep underground and they’re fighting the good fight to take them down! Our heroes are outnumbered and they urgently need our help! This is a terrible threat to our national security and thus we must take drastic measures!

So in order to make sure that we the citizens are kept safe, they have to expand the battlefield to include the entire United States so that any of these supposed terrorists masquerading as US Citizens can be arrested and held in Guantanamo Bay without trial or due process for an indefinite amount of time. It’s for our safety, so civil rights can take a back seat for now. No lawyers. No due process. No time table. You’re stuck there until they let you out.

And it doesn’t matter whether or not you’re actually a terrorist. Just the suspicion you might be a terrorist is proof enough to hold you for however long they want. That’s what the NDAA is. And it passed.

And then people wonder why so many people hate the government.

ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.

The entire 48 hours without charges being filed is true

However, the Patriot Act created exceptions to this. If the US suspects someone is a terrorist, they can be detained and interrogated by “advanced interrogation techniques”(also known as torture), and never be charged with anything.

A good documentary for this is ‘Taxi to the Dark Side’ which is the story of a taxi driver who was placed in extrajudicial detention and was tortured and beaten to death. He was a taxi driver who was arrested along with 3 other people. The other 3 people were released 15 months later after it was determined they posed no threat to anyone.

This is what the US has become.

You wanna talk about a statue of limitations...

So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.

What do the Carolina Panthers and Billy Graham have in common?

They can make 70,000 people stand up and yell Jesus Christ!

Honestly

I saw that joke for other football teams in the league, but I felt it was more appropriate for Carolina due to Billy Graham’s ties to the region and how often I was screaming that phrase last season (2010)

One more for our scumbag rivals....

Q: If you have a car containing a Saints wide receiver, a Saints linebacker, and a Saints defensive back, who is driving the car?

A: The cop.

The funniest thing to me

was it looked like the Chiefs cheerleaders were highlighted and not the Chiefs players.
Maybe it’s because I live in KC, but that’s funny to me that the Chiefs players weren’t even center stage for them.
