Free Agency: Who can help the Panthers the most?

After an exciting 2011 season, the Panthers front office has to be thinking that they are on the right track to making this team a legitimate Super Bowl contender for the next decade. Below are a list of the 2012 free agents. I want to hear from you the fans on your takes on who is a potential realistic choice for the Panthers target in free agency. I know we don't have tons of cap space but there has to be a player or two that we can get that will help take us to the next level. If you can give a good reason why this player will be targeted then please put it in your comments. Sound off Panther fans! PLAYOFFS 2012 here we come!

There are a lot of name up there i like

Unfortunately I think we will continue with what we’ve been doing and go with guys who have ties to the organization in some way. So i would concentrate more on those players for who we would likely get.

The problem with these lists is maintaining them...

I would imagine some of these guys have been resigned. Everytime I pick someone I want I find out they already re-signed

Not to pimp myself here...

But I posted the list Rotoworld got from the NFLPA as a fanshot. If any list is accurate, its that one.

Steveie Johnson or Jerome Simpson would be nice

If we are not able to lure in Vincent Jackson or DeSean Jackson, I think Johnson or Simpson are two up and coming WR’s.

by TS BOBCAT on Jan 17, 2012 11:07 AM EST reply actions

I don't think we'll be adding a WR

And while there’s definitely that hometown factor with Simpson, there’s also this…

In September 2011, police searched Simpson’s home after intercepting a package to be delivered to his home containing 2 pounds of marijuana. When police arrived at Simpson’s home, he allowed them to search his home. Upon searching the home, the police found 6 more pounds of marijuana, scales, empty packages similar to the one intercepted by the police. Simpson’s teammate Anthony Collins and his wife were at the residence and were also questioned by the police. No arrests were made.3 Simpson continued to play during the 2011 season. The NFL has stated it will wait to decide if it will discipline Simpson until the police investigation is completed.

Eddie Royal wouldn't be a bad addition. Dude has nice hands, and can return kicks.

But I’m not sure this list is accurate. Especially, since Charles Godfrey is listed as a Free Agent.

Royal's Numbers Will Suffer If He Stays In Denver, As A Virginia Tech Grad Maybe He Would Prefer The Panthers Or A Reunion With Shanahan With The Redskins

After a couple of years with injuries and falling numbers he might come cheap, and may still have his 4.39-40 speed, which the Panthers need bad on the other side from Steve Smith.

by PanthersRoar on Jan 17, 2012 1:28 PM EST reply actions

Id like to see Royal in black

My whole family is Tech fans so I may be biased. But if you cant get one of the big name recievers he cannot hurt.

I don't see us being big players on the free agent market

But if we decide to go that way I would love to hear we got Mario Williams or Finley. From a needs stand point I like Chris Harris and Chris Hope. I have a man crush on Laurent Robinson so I would be happy to have him on the team but I don’t see wr as a necessary position to upgrade and I don’t see many wr’s out there that clearly have more upside than lafell and gettis

by jcalabre on Jan 17, 2012 2:21 PM EST reply actions

Mario Williams would cost too much and Finley wouldn't be an improvement over anyone.

The Texans are probably going to place their franchise tag on Marion Williams anyways. Finley drops too many balls and is not better than anyone we don’t already have on the roster(Greg Olsen or Jeremy Shockey). The knock on Olsen is that sometimes he can’t come up with difficult catches and the same knock is established on Finley.

Finley is Elite

I like Olsen and Shockey as much as the next guy but Finley is clearly a better player. He is younger more athletic and has better hands. I’m sure the packers are going to resign him but he would be a huge addition for our team. It seems the NFL is trending towards placing a bigger value on athletic TE’s (Gronk, Davis, Graham) and Finely definitely fits the mold. I think having Olsen and Finely would put us at the forefront. That being said its probably irrelevant because we cant afford him and he wont be available.

by jcalabre on Jan 19, 2012 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Better hands?

He seemed to drop everything thrown at him by season’s end.

by JDeLong42 on Jan 19, 2012 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

Drops are a misleading stat in my opinion

Drops are subjective. Sometimes a receiver makes a great play on the ball just to get a hand on it then gets credited with a drop. Smitty is usually close to the top in drops each season does that mean he has bad hands? Roddy White, Brandon Marshall, and Dwayne Bowe we at the top this year and I wouldn’t say they have bad hands. Finley has made some great catches. I could be wrong but I just feel like he has better hands. Not trying to take anything away from Olsen he is great but I think Finley is really special. I could see a Olsen v. Finley debate but Finley v. Shockey is no question Finley.

by jcalabre on Jan 19, 2012 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with Finley being a clear step up from Shockey at this point

Olsen is debatable. Finley definitely trumps Olsen in terms of athleticism, but I watched a lot of Packers games this year and he dropped A LOT of easy catches. I don’t know if it was a result of bad hands or a lack of concentration, but it was bad. Olsen has the advantage in that area in my opinion.

It really comes down to preference I guess. Do you want Finley who is inconsistent but has the potential take a game over? Or do you want Olsen that isn’t all that explosive, but is consistently reliable?

by JDeLong42 on Jan 19, 2012 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn't mind us taking a chance on a WR...

Like Anthony Gonzales. He’s been prone to injury these last two season, but I think he’d offer a reliable option for Cam to throw to.

The man has good talent when healthy

I would still like Carolina to bring in a big bodied receiver to allow Smith some playing time in the slot.

safety help

Brandon Merriweather or Jim Leohnard. Possible Michael Griffin, Chris Harris and Chris Hope. I think the corner position could use some help too. So Aaron Ross and William Gay would be god signings. Considering the Panthers are over the cap there will be several cuts coming and they will be looking for cheap controllable players. These guys I listed are probably out of there budget range so look for them to build through the draft or sign cheap players like Thomas Decoud or Gibril Wilson.

by RazorbackBrave80 on Jan 19, 2012 7:47 AM EST reply actions

Merriweather Should Be Cheap After Being Benched By The Bears

What a giant fall for Merriweather, and supper fast as well. Was it just in 2010 or 09 that he made the Pro Bowl, and then he’s cut by the Patriots at the start of last season?

by PanthersRoar on Jan 20, 2012 6:21 PM EST reply actions

Merriweather is horrible.

People want him because he’s a name. I’ll pass on him.
