Michael Brockers vs Georgia 2011
Here's some game tape that I found on Defensive Tackle Prospect Michael Brockers. As you may know some have been contemplating the Panthers selecting him with their 1st round selection.

He has a good motor and uses his hands very well
but his explosion at the line and use of leverage is not good at all
not buying
i expect explosion from a top 10 pick def not worth our 1st
Didnt really see alot of double teams. you got to be a guy that demands double teams in college
Marvin Austin was a great DT in college and he fell to the second round last year. not worry of our top 10 pick

Worry?

And you must not realize how good LSU's DLINE is
You can’t double anyone…
Marvin Austin played against piss poor competition compared to Brockers, COME on.

Marvin Austin fell because of the NCAA Investigation
He didn’t play for a whole year

I had the privelege to watch both LSU and
Penn st. play this year. To me Devon Still out of Penn is the better pick at DT if we go that route. I really dont see it being another DT in the earlier rounds this year.
I wasn't overly impressed with him in this video
But, I still think this is a classic example of taking a pick for the present v. the future. I think Devon Still will be a good NFL DT for years but not worth a top 10 pick. Brockers seems like his ceiling is much higher but it would be one of those picks that might take a year or 2 to really pay off.
"One step at a time"
Really?
I need to relive this nightmare? Well, like Cam (who tormented UGA while at Auburn), if Brockers is drafted by Carolina and wrecks havoc it will be a welcomed addition. Aside from filling needs in the secondary, there is a need for a big man to push up front and clog those running lanes.

He had nice push in the pass rush for the most part. But no explosion, which is something our D-Line lacks.
His rush defense looked hit or miss, with some of the plays having him blocked out of the play. Overall, I wasn’t really impressed by him.

I hope there's some more impressive game tape than that.

Everyone needs to remember that this is just one game
Lots of very nice plays here. Interestingly enough, he seemed to get better as the game went on (beating double teams etc.).
Not sold
If this guy is the best then it really is a weak DT class
He definitely uses his hands well and bats a lot of balls down at the line.
I think he lacks the explosiveness/quickness off the ball. (got stood up at the line of scrimmage) and then relied on a pretty weak/average spin move to try and get around the OL which rarely worked.
He also had trouble shedding blocks and looked pretty poor stopping UGA’s running game. Got manhandled/driven back a number of times.
He is still very young tho
I think he needs to lose about 10-15 pounds to get him some speed but i think he has a bunch of talent and could be very good. Him being 6-6 is also a plus.
If we go D line I still say Still or Mercilus. If Mercilus has a good combine or pro day I can see his value rising a lot. If we don’t go D line then I still say Dre K. After seeing Aldon Smith lastnight and throughout the season we need a DE like that.. Mercilus has that potential.
by PantherTrain on Jan 15, 2012 1:48 PM EST via mobile reply actions
I just think unless he is the next Suh or Sapp it’s not worth taking him. I personally think our DT position will be crowded next season with possible new FA signing and injured players coming back. I think both Still and Mercilus have that game changing potential
by PantherTrain on Jan 15, 2012 1:55 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
I do agree that we have a crowded group of DTs
no one great but Edwards is a legit starter, Shirley played very well, Neblett played pretty well, and McClain and Fua started showing improvement
This.

I would like a dominant DT but the position isnt the glaring weakness that it use to be and getting a new DT would mean getting rid of one of these guys who are mostly young and full of potential
Agreed.

I doubt that either of the 1st round choices (Brockers/Still) are dominant enough to be much improvement over the more (now) experienced Neblett, Shirley, or Kearse.
I’m still leaning toward taking a CB, as our most glaring need.
That's the line of thinking I going with right now.

It funny how everyone thinks that he sucks after watching 5 minutes of highlights
Panther Pride 'till I die.
This tape did lower my opinion on Brockers
but not a lot. From what i see here and what i knew before watching I give him a late 1st round grade
nnot so sure about that
according to many he still isnt the top DT on the board and msot dont expect a DT to go top 10. Things are bound to change but try not to pay much attention to hype at this point. We really wont have any clue as to who will go where until march
Well then "many" don't know anything.
Brockers is better than every DT in this draft. He won’t get past the Seahawks(their biggest need outside of qb is a passrushing DT/DE). A DT this athletic, with this much potential won’t fall very far. He’s the Jason Pierre Paul of DT’s.
Panther Pride 'till I die.
We need help on the defensive line
Idc how damn good your cb’s are if you give a QB the time we gave them this year to throw the ball, the WR will get open. A good D-line will make the CB’s better.
lol true but the same thing can be said about db's
give the secondary a few more secs in cov get more sacks hahaha, plus have you seen some games this year drew brees releases in like 3-4 secs

Not really, look at the eagles
Look at panthers super bowl defense. You know what made that defense. The defensive line was so good at pressuring the QB and stopping the run it caused alot of turnovers.
A combination of both is always the best.
That’s why the 49ers were getting pressure on the Saints. However, also note that the Greenbay Packers secondary has looked horrible this season despite being number 5 last year. The GB DBs have mentioned that Cullen Jenkins’ departure had a lot to do with it.
"Hope for the best plan for the worst"
"They laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at them because they're all the same"
Yup that is true.
During the Packers vs Giants game I heard the commentator mention how the Packers’ corner-backs mentioned being greatly affected by the departure of Cullen Jenkins in the middle of the line.
Brockers did not seem that impressive during this video however it is just one instace and one game. If he has the potential to be the beast that everyone is clamoring that he can become then I think you take him and develop him.

"They laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at them because they're all the same"
He looks solid
but I’m not sure he’s worth our first round pick.
He definitely has a good motor, and read most of the plays very well. He stayed with the play, even on extended plays, which is always good. I think at his age, he has a lot of upside and has some growing to do (literally and figuratively) What I saw off of the line was more a lack of everwhelming size than lack of explosion. If you were to pack a solid 15-20 lbs on Brockers, he would look better off of the line (not all belly weight, mind you). This guy could be an amazing pick if he had a year or two to pack on the weight, the problem is that we kind of need someone to step in now.
I’m not sure he has the size just yet to step in and start against NFL caliber offensive lines and be dominate. We would basically ask that of him with a pick that high right? I just can’t see spending a high first rounder on this guy at this stage in his development. 2nd Rounder for sure if he is still there, but I doubt he will be.

Coples...as much as I dislike him for us...
Looks like a better DT prospect than this guy…
i actually like Coples
not at #8, but I do like him as a potential player. What i like most about him is the versatility. He can play any 4-3 position on the line, 3-4 DE and 3-4 OLB
Funny bc he is a DE
Same for merculious.
And I can find a game in college where Suh looked meh

Can you find an important game in which he looked meh?
The 2009 Big 12 Championship, is where Suh cemented his elite status. This SEC Championship game looked kinda vanilla for Brockers.

So if he's not worth the #8 pick...
then trade down. Get the 12th or 13th pick, plus a later (3rd round-type pick) and draft him then. Though I will say this , I grew up in Pennsylvania making me a Penn State fan and I therefore watch a bunch of Devon Still. That guy dominates games. I’d say he was a big reason they won more than 5 games this year…one BAMF. I personally really hope we take him…whether it is at the #8 spot or later.
Takes someone willing to trade up in order for us to trade down.

I may not always be right, but even a blind nut finds a squirrel every once in a while.
I'll throw my 2 cents in
I will have to disagree with the general consensus and say he looked pretty good in that video. I don’t know what you guys were expecting to see. 10 sacks and 30 tackles? I thought it looked like he got a pretty good push on passing downs and penetrated rather quickly. Georgia just got the ball out quick. He seems very good at shedding blocks to make the tackle against the run. He got taken out of a few plays, but it’s unrealistic to expect perfection.
I like what I see.
Agreed.
He did get washed out of the hole early in the game, and for people looking for a NT I don’t think he’ll be one. But he came on strong as the game progressed, which is something we need. His biggest pluses are his length, motor, and he has plenty of room to grow. I’d be fine with spending a pick on this guy, but I’m leaning more towards Kirkpatrick at this point.
Yes I'm a dude.

Personally, his lack of explosiveness is what concerned me.
And the fact that he was bullied out of a couple of run plays. We already have plenty of DT’s like that.

He's nothing like our DT's
He’s already stronger than all of them, including Edwards

He didn't really show it in that video.

totally agree
I was surprised by the comments here. I thought he was very impressive in the video. I think other people are expecting perfection. If you put the tape on any NFL DT you’ll see a similar video. DTs typically don’t get a ton of tackles and will be forced to the outside every now and again. To me, he is good at collapsing the pocket quickly and forcing the QB to make a throw.

Yeah I know
It irritates me. It’s like “He didn’t bowl over the entire offensive line and sack the QB on every play, he isn’t that good.” To me, it sure looked like Georgia’s OLine was having a hard time containing him.
I think most people (myself included) didnt think he looked bad
he just didnt look like the dominant player he was talked up to be. If I went off of this tape i would put a late-first/early-second round grade on him. He’s still good and is a player I would like to have, just not top 10 worthy, at least not yet and not by this footage.
It looked to me that,
he always wanted to go around the blocker, I fully expect any dt taken in the top ten to go THROUGH the blocker.
Right, we must have direct pressure from the middle.
QBs such as Brees are at their most comfortable when they can step up in the pocket.
Remove that, and their efficiency drops drastically, and the edge rushers can get to them easier.
thanks for the great post.
Exactly what I was looking for. Not too impressive to me either and hard to say if he is better than Still, minus two years of exerience.
Looks like a 3-4 DE at this point.
Not sure we have the luxury of making a top 10 pick now, and hoping he pans out in 2 or 3 years. We need an impact player now.
I like to think of myself as a one-man wolfpack.
