Bucs Interviewing Panthers OC Rob Chudzinski

Darin Gantt Dance card filling up. RT : Bucs will be speaking to Mike Zimmer, Bengals DC, and Rob Chudzinski, Panthers OC,

Now also beingreported by the Observer:

Chudzinski, the Panthers' offensive coordinator, remains a hot candidate for head-coaching jobs. After interviewing for openings in Jacksonville and St. Louis, Chudzinski next will meet with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, an NFL source said Friday. Tampa Bay's interest in Chudzinski was first reported by NFL.com.

Well this is just unfortunate. Having him leave is one thing, going to a division rival is even worse. The front office needs to get on top of things and make him some sort of offer to entice him to stay. Offer him a bigger contract like the Bengals did with Jay Gruden. Sorry if someone else posted this already...saw the news so thought I'd post it as my first post.

Yeah, but I don’t want him going to a division rival…especially the Bucs. I really think all this interviewing is just practice for Chud. Getting him introduced to the whole process. Rivera noted that it took a few interviews until he became comfortable.

I don't "want" him to go either.

But, it’s not the end of the world. He’s not the only OC out there, and he’s not the only OC who could have success with Cam Newton, Steve Smith, and Double Trouble.

It’d be a shame to see him go to Tampa, but we can’t blame him for putting himself out there…like BW said, this is the potential realization of a career goal

I would love to see him stay but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if he left. Ultimately it comes doen to having the right playmakers in place to make any offense work. We have those playmakers and they might make a new coordinator look great next yr if we lose chud. Actually we might want to get used to it because hopefully cam is going to make a lot of coordinators and assistants look reall good.

by gaineristheman on Jan 13, 2012 3:39 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I would be shocked if TB hired him. You would think they would want a older guy with head coaching experience, especially after the last one failed so miserably.. They really seem to be dragging their feet.

i agree

I was kind of thinking they would go with someone who was more experienced after raheem didn’t work out in the end.

Chud is actually now acting like someone with no dignity/respect.

He should calm down and focus on the season coming 2012 season. Jay Gruden turned down an opportunity to be interviewed for a head coaching position and said he respects the organisation that gave him a chance/oppportunity. After hearing that, what did the Bengals do, they gave him a raise. Now that is respect and class. Chud has none of that. He is going to let the players despise him because they would feel as if he could leave at any given season.

The players won't disrespect a guy who leaves because he's reaching his goal.

he can leave after any season

Most coaches become coaches with the ultimate goal of becoming a head coach. Players all know this is a business and they probably know that a guy as talented as chud isn’t going to be there long. Trying to further your career doesn’t mean you are disrespectful. He can focus on the next season after the interviews are over. Its not like its a week before the season starts

by gaineristheman on Jan 13, 2012 3:54 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

You're initial comment makes it sound likes he whoring himself out to other teams

Nobody is going to hate a guy for trying to get a promotion. It’s what everybody strives for. Nobody starts out their career saying “My ultimate goal is to become an assistant and nothing more.” Every coach wants to be a head coach, like others have said. We can’t hold him hostage and prevent him from taking a step forward in his career.

by JDeLong42 on Jan 13, 2012 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

What? This has nothing to do with dignity or respect.

Chud is interviewing for a promotion, and the teams interviewing him have asked permission from our front office.

It’s not as if he is actively interviewing for another coordinator job, and just wants to be out of Carolina.

It has nothing to do with respect or class,

its all about opportunity. Take off your homer hat and understand that most coordinators want to be a head coach, and you never know if you could be turning down your last offer. Plus with the pay raise involved, you have to keep your family in mind. Hue Jackson seemed to show a lot of respect to the Raiders organization, and he got fired after only one season by going 8-8 (which ties for their best record in ten years). Schottenheimer was fired from the Chargers after repeatedly making the playoffs, but they choose to hold on to Norv Turner who had an 8-8 season and missed the playoffs 2 years in a row. Coaching is so dog eat dog you have to do whats best for you and your family because the team will always do whats best for them.

This is the most damn ridiculous thing I've read on here today.

You always, ALWAYS look for a promotion, more money, etc. Chudzinski owes us nothing. If you don’t think 99% of our players would leave for more money then you’re fooling yourself.

This is a business, you look out for what’s best for you first.

Ding ding ding!

Being from KC and watching a lot of their games, Todd Haley is absolutely a control freak. He wants to control everything and could never get along with a coordinator because he wanted to be in charge. He and Pioli are both guys who wanna be in control and that is eventually where things went bad. He is very hard on his players and almost never showed them any love, except for Thomas Jones, which made no sense since Jones has always been extremely underwhelming in KC.

by JStewart28 on Jan 13, 2012 4:37 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Other than Haley, who else is out there we could get since Norv Turner isntan option. What about Hue Jackson, is he a defensive or offensive guy? I was actually shocked he got fired and suprised he hasnt already landed somewhere else, dude went 8-8 his first year.

This season you think the Chiefs offense looked like our offense?

If you mean their offense looked like our offense in 2010, I’d agree with you.
I’m not saying it’s all their fault, they lost their starting RB and QB, but even before Cassel went down, they did not look good at all offensively.
They would either win games on defense or their defense wouldn’t show up and they’d get blown out.
Their offense scored just over 12 points a game, which is less than a point better than what we scored in 2010.
I just don’t see how anyone can say their offense looked like ours did.

by Philipkcks on Jan 14, 2012 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if the Bucs end up interviewing and hiring Hue Jackson

I don’t think this is all the people they will interview. Jackson proved he could make something out of a young bunch of misfits in Oakland, he certainly could get results out of the Bucs.

That was my thought as well

Hue’s offensive turn around in Oakland as an OC was almost as good as Chud’s in Charlotte so he should start showing up in the news as an OC or HC. He wasn’t canned for performance so much as either the Palmer trade, new owner/GM coming in or both.

Seems to be the new owner

According to Michael (the Douche) Silver:

Back in the spring of 2008, when he was very much in charge of the Oakland Raiders’ singularly peculiar organization, Al Davis presided over a predraft meeting at the team’s Alameda, Calif., training facility. As coaches and personnel officials discussed what to do with the fourth overall pick, which the team would ultimately use to select Arkansas halfback Darren McFadden, the Hall of Fame owner’s son, Mark, casually drifted into the room.
"Mark," Davis said, stopping the meeting and sounding genuinely interested. "What do you think we should do?"
Caught off guard, the younger Davis mumbled something about needing a wide receiver.
Wrong answer.
"A [expletive] receiver?" Al Davis snapped, his voice rising. "Get the [expletive] out of here."
And with that, the heir to one of the NFL’s most storied franchises slinked out of the room and continued with the rest of his day.

To project an image of authority, Mark Davis needs to surround himself with employees who didn’t see him routinely disparaged and condescended to by his legendary father.

Take it with a grain of salt, but it seems Daddy’s Little Boy is putting on the Big Boy Pants now.

I got 20 says the Raiders will be broke and out of Oakland in 5 years.

Mark isn't as big a piece to the puzzle as his last name implies...

the organization has people in place (including some woman who I can’t remember her name, but she looks like she can mean mug with the best of them lol) to make personnel decisions and whatnot, not too mention Mckenzie (who came from a Raiders organization that knew how to win) coming in at GM and beginning the cleaning process, so I don’t think it’ll matter how much he got bossed around by the crypt keeper :p

I can understand a coach wanting to be a head coach.

The thing I don’t like is, he has only been here for 1 year, with a completely new staff, I can see if you have been in an organization for a few years, then it may be time to move on. But to come in to a new team, knowing it is a tream learning a new offense, defense, with all new coaches, then desert them after they are just getting the hang of the play book is kind of selfish. Like I said, I could understand it if he had been here for a while and him leaving would just be 1 guy going and all the team already knew what their jobs were, but this is not the same circumstance. I think the team should have made it clear to every coach they hired this last season that they expect them to be here for a minimum of 3 years while they build a team.

Ever heard of a contract where you can't go work for your competitors for x amount of years?

When you build a team, you need to have the people you trained there for more than their first year. I think I made it clear that I don’t blame anyone for trying to move up. I don’t blame Chud for wanting a promotion. I blame Richardson, Hurney, and Rivera for hiring someone without making it clear to them that they need to be here more than a year. That should have been 1 of the main things emphasized in the interview for the OC position. When you run a business, you don’t want to have to retrain your employees every year do you?

While I don't agree...I can certainly understand this viewpoint.

I don’t get why people are upset at Chud for wanting a promotion. But, I can understand the point of blaming JR/Hurney for signing him to a deal that doesn’t include a minimum year requirement.

I blame Cam

If he hadn’t looked so damn good this year, Chudz wouldn’t be getting these interviews for another year or two. We all knew that Chudz was on the cusp of becoming a HC prospect, there was just no way of knowing that he would have a game changing talent to play with in his first year.

While this is coming a year or two earlier that expected, it shouldn’t have surprised anyone here.

You leave Chud little incentive to take the job then

Especially when there’s a league-wide mandate that you can’t deny someone permission to interview for a promotion.

You're probably right with the league rule but

there is nothing in the rules that say they can’t tell the coach in his interview that they expect him to be around a while. To test the candidates in the interview to see if their main goal is to become a head coach any time soon. I was just pointing out the other types of contracts that keep people from quitting on them and going to the competition as an example of how companies try to hire people that will be there so they don’t train them for their competition.
