Russell Wilson...a good backup QB for the Panthers?
So he's realized that he is an average baseball player and has decided to try his hand in the NFL. I'm not sure where he's projected to go in the draft, if at all, but do you think it would be worth giving him a look as a long-term backup to Cam?

He is a projected 4th round pick. While i can see your thought process im going to say no. While some things in this offense are set up for Cam a QB like Derrick Anderson can step in and still have success in the same system. Cam and Phillip Rivers are very different QB’s but both thrived in this offense. A back up to Cam who is only 22 should not be our biggest concern right now. Especially that high in the draft. We got DA and they will be good for now.

I was not aware that he was projected that high, so that changes things.
The only way I see it being a possibility is if he slides into the 6th round or later.

i may have been mistaken he was taken in the 4th round in Baseball….either way he was a good College QB but he is listed at 5’11 and many think when he measures out he will be below that. He favors former Ohio State QB Troy Smith

He does, except he's more accomplished as a thrower, IMO.
And for his size the kid can really push the ball down the field—something you have to be able to do in this offense if you want to wear a jersey on Sundays.
But yeah, he’d will probably get drafted later by a team who needs a QB more than we do. And if he makes it to free agency he would probably elect to sign elsewhere being that we have a 22 year old starter who is firmly entrenched.

If he could be had in the 6th-7th round
Then yes absolutely, but I think he’s at worst a fourth rounder.

I Only See A Need For Another Backup QB If Anderson Leaves, Or Clausen Is Traded Or Cut
The 7th round of the draft has some very interesting QB’s.
Case Keenum (6-1, 210, 4.94-40) is the best, because he’s a great passer (coming back from injury with a much stronger arm, but his perfect accuracy slipped a little this season), who in spite of his 4.94 speed runs well when forced out of the pocket. He would be a perfect backup for Sam Bradford (or Drew Brees), and with the Rams (or Saints) would play 10-14 games indoors each season.
Kellen Moore (5-11, 195, 4.98-40) he’s been great in college, but may be too small to take the NFL pounding, and he’s not that moble.
Dominique Davis (6-3, 212, 4.65-40) of East Carolina is a project, but he shares many of Cam’s qualities, just not as much of them.
Austin Davis (6-1, 221, 4.78-40) of Southern Miss looked bad in his bowl game, but the announcers kept saying that he was more accurate than Luck and other top QB’s at the Manning’s QB Camp last summer.
If anyone want’s Russell Wilson at QB, they might as well just move Armanti Edwards back to QB. They are around the same size (height), with strong arms, and Edwards might be the better runner.
I would not be opposed to moving Money back to QB. But we've been over this before, and there is a...

How dare you offend Armanti by calling him a worm?

As an ECU student I am obligated to support the idea of getting Davis....
I’ve been to most of the home games. He isn’t bad, but he doesnt impress
One guy I like for next years draft is EJ Manuel out of FSU.
He could be a good project behind Cam. Logan Thomas wouldn’t be too shabby either.

Logan Thomas is almost a carbon copy of Newton in terms of physical ability
He’d be a perfect backup
Amen.

I'm not that worried about a QB
As a matter of fact, I’d only carry two on the roster: Newton and Anderson. Let Money be the emergency 3rd QB, like he was this year since I don’t remember the Jimmy ever getting a jersey.

Russell Wilson
Was drafted by the Colorado Rockies to play baseball, when he leaves college he’s turning his full attention to that sport
He announced today he's playing football.
He’s given up on baseball.

i cant blame the kid…Baseball is a dying sport in America. Football keeps getting bigger and bigger. Denver vs Pitt game was the most watched show on Television since the Superbowl. 47+ million people.

Plus, he's not that good at baseball.
He’s got a good walk rate put has serious contact issues and minor power. Plus he’s a 22 year old that hadn’t even sniffed AA. The odds for him having a long career in football is much better than him having one in baseball.

Yeah, but a decent baseball player can pull down $3-$5 million a year
Ask Matt Forte if he wishes he got that kind of money.

Heh
The chances of a 22 year old that can’t top a .240 average with little power in A-ball becoming one of those “$3MM-$5MM a year” guys is pretty slim.

We ran basically the whole season with only 2 QB’s dressed on gameday. Taking him now would be a waste of a draft pick to be honest. I’m sure he can stick somewhere, but I wouldn’t take him. Too many other guys we could take with that [pick.

so I obviously love Russell Wilson…but I wouldnt support drafting him before the 7th round. I would rather spend the picks on trying to find another late round gem like David Gettis or Greg Hardy. Personally, I can see the Packers taking him to be Rodgers backup since Matt Flynn is probably going somewhere else this offseason.
