I'm seeing more pundits mock DT Devon Still to us so I looked up a recruiting video. At 6'4 310 lbs I love his build, thick legs and body but not fat. I'm not saying just yet we should pull the trigger but we need to keep an eye on him.

DT "When Did You Get Here?"
Greg Hardy "Man...I've been here all day."
He makes a lot of plays behind the LOS.
But he relies mostly on quickness—something that catches up to guys when they get to the league.
I like to think of myself as a one-man wolfpack.
What I mean is the quickness gap will be narrowed...everyone is quick on this level.
He’s gonna be a good one, though. But with any DT, it will take some time. I do like the fact that he is in very, very good shape for an interior lineman.
I like to think of myself as a one-man wolfpack.
from what i've seen,
he isnt consistently dominant as this highlight video shows, i would rather have him as a trade back option, or else just take someone like kirkpatrick in the top 10
He’s definitely a beast, wouldn’t mind him.

He by far the best DT on the board as of this moment. If the kid from LSU declares he could have some competition. He seems very athletic for a DT. He is a upgrade over McClain and Fua for sure throw him in with Edwards who will be returning and Nebs who was coming on strong and our DT position might finally be solved.

Wow. Just wow. If I was a cussin man, James would probably have to ban me for a week for profanity. I’d like to see more of him against bigger lines, but so far I’m impressed.
I kinda like power running football though. It’s iike a bloody violent ballet…

Remember guys, thats a highlight reel
He’s going to look outstanding in that video. That being said, I love how often he’s behind the LOS. If he can improve on his conditioning then he should make for a good UT in this scheme.
I’m also impressed with how big he is without being fat.

FWIW, the PSU pieces I've seen so far seem to like him a lot as well...
the consensus seems to be that he was a bright spot on an otherwise mediocre line; they love his motor, and it sounds like he could’ve put up better numbers with a little more talent around him. Not going to peg him our future, but I don’t think we should be surprised if he creeps into top 10 consideration with a good combine and interviews…

He is playing in the Senior Bowl as well so he will likely improve his stock with a good performance

Yup...Jan 28th 3pm EST
I look forward to that game every year as I see it as a good gauge of prospects
You know who else had a GREAT highlight reel?
Mike Goodson

I still think he was worth it where we picked him
Fumblitis aside, I think he would be a decent backup on any team but ours.

Run Stuffing DT with room the grow.
Mr. Still is a classic 3 technique, who is most effective against the run when slanting into the action; however, he needs to utilize his impressive strength and develop a quick first step in order to get to the quarterback at the next level. While he certainly has had some issues with motivation, Still has shown he can be a dominant force in short stretches. With the right atmosphere and coaching, he should be a solid starter during his first couple of years and might even develop into a pro’s pro in the NFL.
With this Staff of Coaches i think he can really improve. He has the strength he just needs to work on his technique to get to the QB quicker. Run stuffing it what we need though and that is his bread and butter. This staff did a lot with less talented DT towards the end of the year. Id be interested to see how he fared in Carolina. I can see the upside but i will not be heart broken if we go another direction. CB,OL are still very viable options at 8/9.

Devon Still has already signed with super-agent Drew Rosenhaus
we have a good relationship with Drew so if we like him this could go well for us

Putting this here, as a do not want possible participant

As for the boy above, that would be a nice pick up for us. Him and McClain with Fua as a replacement would be a good rotation.
Don't give up, don't ever give up ~ Jim Valvano
I'd like him on our team, just not with the #8 pick.
I think he’s a very talented player, but he’s not THAT good at this point (although he has the potential to be I think).
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
I don't know
I just don’t like how he missed two seasons due to injury. He suffered torn ligaments in his left knee in 2007 during pre season, then missed a majority of the 2008 season after breaking his left ankle in August.
But who knows, maybe both injuries were flukes and he’s not really injury prone at all. But tearing ligaments is no joke especially for big body athletes like Still. The man sure does look explosive though. I’m just not sure we should use a top 10 pick on him.

Questions about health AND work ethic
That should definitely make one hesitate with a pick this high.
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
I can understand the health concerns (although that seems to be history at this point)...
but from what I can ascertain (not being a PSU fan in the least), it sounds like the motor concerns are largely bunk; I guess we just gotta take it all with a grain of salt lol

His body build reminds me of Richard Seymour....
not saying that he will be the same type of player, but it looks like he has all the physical ability needed.
this
I don’t see where the fat is a problem. Even though this is a highlight reel, there is something he does that you don’t find with most college prospects…Proper tackling. He wraps up and doesn’t need to show boat. He’s such a beast, that a common tackle looks like a big play.
DT "When Did You Get Here?"
Greg Hardy "Man...I've been here all day."
I think Jaxon was saying that he's NOT fat.
At least that’s what I think.

I like Still but the projections ive seen put him between 10 and 20 but maybe. Since he’s playing in the senior bowl lets check that out.
That's one big dude...
I’d love to call him a Panther, but nearly everyone slated to go in the first round has an awesome highlight reel. Dominant DTs and dominate CBs are hard to find in this leauge. Its a really close call but if I could only draft one, I would take the corner because CBs with size and talent are a little more rarer and can change a game with one play. Even so I trust in Hurney and Co’s big board, because either of these guys could be make a huge difference on defense.

Starts in the trenches and one could make the argument that the lack of pass rush is why our secondary looked so bad. If you give a QB all day to throw coverage is bound the break down. Improve the front 7 and get pressure and the balls come out quicker and you have a better shot to make a play

I agree that having a good D-line is the most important, because of what pressure does to QBs
I just feel that a dominant CB is ever-so-slightly harder to find than a dominate DT. Maybe I’m wrong, its real close either way. But, I would say it boils down to how much they think Still could improve the line over the guys we have or could get in the future vs how much better Kirpatrick (or whoever they like) is compared to what we have or could get in the future.

When we went to the Super Bowl our starting corners were Reggie Howard and Terry Cousin. Good Defensive line can do wonders

And back then corners could still play more physical than they can now
I think the rules are now bent so far in the QB and WR favor that the only way to balance it out is to have an excellent pass rush.

Football has and always will start on the Line. You give guys like Brees Brady Rodgers time in the pocket and your dead. I dont care if you got Deon Sanders in the secondary. Adding a big body in the middle will open up things for Beason and our LB’s let them play down hill and allow CJ and Hardy to attack on the edge without being double teamed as much.

Bingo
Trenches, trenches, trenches…we can have the most boss secondary ever assembled, but it won’t mean shit if we can’t get any push on the interior (who cares if CJ and Hardy can rush the outside all game, if all the QB has to do is step up a couple of steps?)
It is no coincidence that as our DTs have gone, so has our defense this past decade lol

I'd jump all over him (no homo)
Provided there’s no obvious BPA still on the board. We can’t go wrong with a CB or DT, and I tend to think an anchor on the line is more important than one in the secondary.
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
I take that back... he sounds "potentially" like Pepper's work ethic, with Otah's health
He should definitely be no our list though… Just more weary after reading his potential shortcomings
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
Tell us where you're getting this "poor work ethic" stuff, please.
Does this sound like a kid with a “poor work ethic”? I’d say the opposite.
“And yet, Still’s promising football career almost never started because his parents wouldn’t let him play until his grades improved. Then it almost came to a crashing halt after two season-ending injuries in his first two seasons at Penn State. That’s why Still’s father, Antonio Still Sr., said his son’s success is a “truly inspirational story.” “He’s the perfect role model for kids because he did things the right way,” Still Sr. said. “He overcame his injuries. He worked hard in the classroom and got his degree. Nothing was handed to him.” “It’s very gratifying,” Still said. "I always wanted to be one of the best football players in college. It’s a big honor to get all of these awards and accolades. But Still and his parents – Antonio Sr. and Melissa Sangara – were just as proud on Dec. 17, when Still’s name was called at Penn State’s graduation for earning a degree in criminal justice. "
Also, list the “shortcomings” you allude to. Have you really read about what he’s done?
He's just reading what's being repeated in some scouting reports...
it’s a tale of two different reports: Some say he has motor concerns, while others praise his work ethic (does this controversy sound familiar?); I think some reports have looked at what happened to him a couple seasons back with an “off field” incident and lumped that in with work ethic, but if you look at the incident at all he didn’t seem to do anything wrong (rather, he got a knife pulled on him in the locker room by a teammate). If there are any PSU homers on CSR, it would be nice to see what they think of him lol

Do you have a blog Big D?
Because from the way you talk, it sounds like I should ignore everyone else’s opinions and just listen to you. You agree?
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
I asked you to cite the source of your statement about him.
You’re the one being sarcastic, not I.
A clever diversion, though. Apparently, repeating what you THINK somebody else said, as if it were fact, is accuracy enough. But that’s how people’s reputations get distorted. Don’t ignore opinions, just question them as being accurate. That’s all I was doing with you.
Scouting reports? I'm way too busy to do that at the moment.
I’m just taking 5 minutes to read what YOU guys say is in the scouting reports. Now I see some of you think otherwise. That’s cool too. But thanks for the sarcasm as usual Big D :S

Haha fair enough; I just assumed you had read it, because I've read it in places as well...

I think that Still will be a decent player, but I would not like to see him at #8.

I'm not a huge fan
I looked at a lot of tape on him when I heard him touted as the best DT in the draft and I see a guy who was really taken out of games when he faced good, run blocking offensive lines.
Time will tell, for now he’s my third favorite DT behind Brockers and Thompson
since Brockers just came out
take his massive potential over Devon Still, who I think isn’t all that great to begin with. Since we’re not likely to win a Superb Owl next year (but definitely playoffs), we best look for potential.
Devon Still Michael Brockers.
