Panthers 2011 Season Individual Statistical Leaders & NFL Rank
Continuing our review of the Panthers 2011 season lets look and recognize the season leaders in some key statistical categories and see how they rank in the NFL. In no particular order so lets make a list.
Touchdowns: QB Cam Newton 35 (5th in NFL); 21 passing (11th) , 14 rushing (2nd)
Scoring: K Olindo Mare 110 points (19th)
Rushing Yards: 836 Yards RB DeAngelo Williams (23rd)
Receiving Yards: Steve Smith 1,394 receiving yards (5th); 7 receiving TDs (21st)
AVG Yards per Kick Return: Kealoha Pilares 25.7 yards (29th)
Tackles: LB James Anderson 145 (6th)
Sacks: Charles Johnson 9.0 (21st)
Interceptions: Sherrod Martin, Chris Gamble 3 (37th)
Forced Fumbles: Jordan Senn 3 (16th)
Passes Defensed: CB Chris Gamble (32nd)
Net Yards Punting: Jason Baker 42.7 (30th
Two things surprise me in this list. The first is the gap between James Anderson and the 2nd place Panther Charles Godfrey with 84 and fact he ended 6th in the NFL. Great season for Anderson. Second is how little our secondary was able to get their hands on the ball. Interceptions and passes defensed were overall very low. It shows how we need more ball hawks in the secondary.

Steve Smith is so badass he refuses to be mentioned by name.

The most telling stat
Bakers sub par performance this year. If there ever was a year to consider a new punter (and perhaps kicker too) its this year.

Anyone else find it funny
That the league leader in average kick return yardage is a DT? 1 return for 38 yards for a 38.0 yard average.
And it skews the rankings
Pilares was middle of the pack among regular returners, but there are a bunch of players above him with single digit returns.
The lack of INT's is also a lack of consistent pass rush
I agree with an upgrade in the secondary, but let us not forget how much easier turnovers occur when there is an effective pass rush.
Welcome to the Cam Cave
Godfrey...
Had 5 picks last year, but I think it was the lack of pressure from the interior D-line that made the INT numbers go down for ALL of our DBs. That being said… we need another solid CB to pair with Gamble, but we already have known that for a while now. =)
and...
After watching this season it looks like we might need another saftey to replace Martin…. ughhh, that TD he gave up to Colston is still burned into my mind… MAKE IT STOP PLAYING OVER AND OVER!!!
Our special teams is shit.
Even pilares was 29th ugh.
We need to draft a kicker/punter… Or wait til 2014 and get Brad Wing in the 2nd round

Haha
I knew so little about punters I had no idea there was a ’rockstar aussie" coming through the ranks lmao. Rec for making me have to google who the hell that was… (for reference understood he was a punter and was like HOLY CRAP why is he saying the 2nd lol)
The things that suprised you,
Didnt suprise me at all, I fully expect Anderson to get a ridiculous amount of tackles with both beason and davis on IR for the year, even Godfrey with the second most, his job is to stop who gets past anderson, or as a last resort (which happened ALOT this year lol), I just dont know what else you would expect?
Not to detract from Andersons season,
Im just saying he was the only playmaker left in the LB corps, so if his production didnt increase in the situation he was put in, then it would have been a reason for panic imo.
He rose to the occasion!
