@ProFootballFocus says #Panthers CB Chris Gamble allowed a catch every 18.1 snaps in coverage, 2nd-best in NFL behind N. Asomugha (18.4) ... opposing QBs had 53.3 passer rating vs. #Panthers Chris Gamble in 2011. Only D. Revis (45.6) & A. Samuel (52.4) better

What this information tells me...

You can’t say “well of course Gamble is good because no one threw at him since the rest of our secondary is garbage”, because even though QB’s avoided Gamble for that reason, even when they did throw at him, the results were in Gamble’s favor most of the time.

If we can add one more CB (Kirkpatrick or Claiborne, perhaps?) close to Gamble’s caliber, we can immediately upgrade our pass defense. If we can also add one more premier pass-rusher, we’re looking at a vastly improved unit with not that many additions.

This

I would love to get Claiborne (almost impossible) or Kirkpatrick. As of now, they are #1 on my list.

Kirkpatrick is best case scenario (assuming Claiborne is already gone) in my book.

If we draft a wide receiver in the first round, I will weep openly.

This. We are one solid corner, a premier pass rusher, and a solid safety away from having an adequate defense.

We have a premier pass rusher

We need an upgrade at DT to take on double teams to free up our premier pass rusher.

Or another premier pass rusher at DE to stop teams from chipping CJ with a RB.

Though I wouldn’t say no to a better DT.

Agreed.

Especially with these new contact rules in place ‘protecting’ receivers, it brings the importance of having a dominating secondary and makes it more important than ever. Kirk has the potential of being another Chris Gamble, so it’s important we grab him up, especially with excellent passing teams like the Saints and the Falcons being in our own division.

ACC Championship Member Brandon Thompson is the new Jacoby Ford. You better pick him Panthers or you will be doomed to relive the 2010 season over and over again in the Twilight Zone.

To be fair

This list was from June. Gamble was in the doghouse all last season, so I can understand why he wouldn’t be on the list, but some of these guys are just meh.

This artical is from last year

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2011-06-05-nfl-best-cornerbacks_N.htm

It was written back in June so it was either a prediction of which corner backs would be the best this year or which ones were the best last year. Either way no one expected Gamble to do what he did so it is no surprise he isn’t on that list

News like this however only means anything to us. Nobody else cares. All they look at are the gaudy stats of guys who are thrown at like 15-20 times a game.

Like Tillman

Who, if I remember correctly, was approaching 1,000 yards allowed by season’s end. He just has a ton of tackles (probably more of a bad thing than good) and name recognition.

by JDeLong42 on Jan 11, 2012 12:09 AM EST up reply actions

Just curious

If we draft Claiborne or Kirkpatrick, what do you all think the odds would be that they could beat out Gmble for #1 CB? The reason I’m asking is if Gamble was this good this year covering #1 receivers imagine what he could do to a #2 WR. Either way I think we would have a very good chance of having two legitimate #1 corners if we drafted either CB and still have Gamble.

Also, what do you all think of moving Butler to take Martin’s place at safety, Gogan as the nickle and Munnerlyn as the dime?

Those are my random thoughts of the day. Tell me what you think.

by Brandon Beaver on Jan 11, 2012 12:42 AM EST reply actions

I doubt anyone will be able to supplant Gamble

Like the numbers say, he’s been nothing short of elite this year. A rookie isn’t going to come in and match that production. And I don’t know how well Butler translates to Safety.

by JDeLong42 on Jan 11, 2012 1:15 AM EST up reply actions

If anybody came in and beat Gamble that’d mean we’d adding a corner on the level of Asomugha or Revis. That right there shows you how likely it is.

0% Chance

Rookie corner backs rarely quality #1 corner backs in their first season much less a top 5 CB in the league (which I believe Gamble is).

Amazing. Simply amazing.

If we could generate a better pass rush without having to bring the house, our defense would be pretty phenomenal.

What it says is something i already knew. Gamble has been the best def. player we’ve had this year. Not even close. Now to get another corner to match up with him.
