well....
Not unless our defence learns that it is an american football defensive unit and not a new age alternative dance troop. All this flapping at thin air and graceful missed tackles has left serious doubt in my mind.

The guy has had an amazing turnaround this season...
He’s proven me wrong on multiple levels. BUT…
To be a part of that (I hope to hell that he is a part of it), he has to be more careful with his ball security. For a guy of that caliber and experience, he has to be more consistent in that regard. Not that his fumble today would have made much or any change in today’s outcome, it gave up what would have been a first down. He had a killer fumble in the GB game earlier this season that gave up what would have been a first down. And there have many quite a few other occasions where he could have coughed up the ball.
Not trying to be too hard on Smitty here. I’m just saying…
And I certainly hope that he’s right in his prediction.

Don't forget about Gettis
I think with his speed (assuming it comes back after torn ACL), he’s going to be able to run under some long shots from Newton, Smith can catch the intermediate stuff and turn several into big plays, and Lafell really seems to be coming into his own. I think we’re good at WR for next year, I really do.
I agree with Smitty.
If we have mostly the same team as we do this year, plus some defensive upgrades, we will be dangerous. Given Rivera’s defensive history I feel pretty confident about the defense heading into next year.
Yes I'm a dude.
I want to see Smitty signed to an extension.
And I fully believe that this team has the potential to make the playoffs next year. I’m just not sure if they will make it.

He did put up monster stats this season, and with out him our WR corps is one of the worst in the NFL.

32 isn't that old
TO put up 900 yards with a bad Bengals team at the age of 37. Jerry Rice played past 40. Smitty has had a couple years where he’s been underutilized, so he’s not worn down as much as a normal 32 year old would be. Smitty takes care of himself and he can definitely contribute for a few more years. You can’t tell me you’d rather have Darvin Adams or Ajirotutu over a mid-30s Steve Smith. Besides, we owe it to Smith to try to get him a ring.

off season.
What I saw in that game today only mad me more positive we have to go defense in this draft and in FA. Like I posted in the game thread, we can work with the #5 offence in the league next year. We have to improve at CB, S, DE, DT, and add depth at LB. I know we get a lot back from IR, but we have to have players that can step up when the starters go down. We don’t have that, and we have to get at least 1 CB that can start. We have to have 1 rushing LB or DE. I am excited about 2012, but today put a little caution in my expectation. Atlanta and New Orleans ain’t going to get worse over the off season.

I, for one, LOVE it!! IT STARTS NOW!!
It’s out there. Even Rivera was talking playoffs THIS year until it was out of reach.
I really thought (make that KNEW) this team had WAY more weapons on offense and was a lot better than 2-14. All we needed was a QB, and by God we’ve got one and we’re on a roll. If we ever find another real #2 WR to really help Smitty, this offense will be even scarier.
That being said, I also think that there’s more talent on this defense than 6-10, much of which didn’t have a chance to impact the season because of injuries. HOWEVER – there’s way too many holes that need to be filled – CB, S, depth @ LB come to mind.
Rivera and Co. got a ton out of patchwork team, and it wasn’t ALL Cam. Sure – he is most definitely THE biggest addition, but the system and personnel were placed around him. If we can can some stability and get some serious help back from IR, the D will immediately improve. A full off-season gives Rivera and Co a level playing field going into next season. I like our chances, and like the attitude.

Wow, went over to the Broncos blog to look at the comments, Broncos fans are bashing Tebow badly, saying they would rather not make the playoffs if they play like this and they need to draft a QB.. Btw Tebow’s stat lime today.. 5/20, 0 TDs, 1 interception, 1 fumble. Denver didnt even score a TD today despite playing at home against the Chiefs..
Wow ill take our 6-10 anyday over the Broncos current 8-8. Oh and what Smitty said, i absloutly agree, we will be dangerous come next season with a good draft and injured players coming back.
At this point I just don't get it...
I just don’t understand about the endless bitching about what Tim Tebow does, and doesn’t do week in, week out.

THANK YOU
I even like the guy, but why in the world is there always comparisons between Cam and Tebow? Not even in the same stratosphere. Tebow is a heck of a player, and seemingly even a better person than player, but so what? We don’t compare Steve Smith to Welker, Vincent Jackson or AJ Green? Let’s just stop, I come to read Panthers stuff, not catch up on what’s going on in the Bronco’s blog.

YES!
Gronkowski is crazy talented – but he’s just 1 of a 1-2 punch at TE for the Pats. It’s just Graham in N.O. So for Gronk to get the stats he has when Hernandez as gotten as much play as he has is really impressive.
Plus, I’d rather pull for a Pat than a Saint. LOL. The Saints have filled me with hate and damaged my soul. =/

I love watching good football
My preference would be for my team to be playing and playing well, but I like seeing circus catches, long zig zagging cut back runs, blitzes that smother a play before it gets started, blocked kicks and long ones that aren’t. I generally cheer for underdogs, but admire good plays.
How about this.
Let’s just hold out on the slim hope that both of their stadiums gets carpet bombed and they both have to forfeit the game because they have nowhere to play! That’s a position that I think everyone can pull for!

You all can thank Bellichick for that.
He put Gronkowski in just for that purpose and called the play just for that purpose.
The article on the NFL site says he put Gronkowski in with his back up QB and called a pass play to Gronkowski when they could have taken a knee. Serves the Saints right, they should have kept Brees in to run Grahams yards up more.

Lets save the hyperbole for another time. Maybe it isn’t hyperbole, but i would settle for a “We will win next game” than a pie in the sky prediction about what happens 12 months from now.
Panthers will be picking 8th in the draft
Apparently, we have the tie breaker over the other 6-10 teams (strength of schedule)
So now can we try to trade down?
Would love for us to move to 15th or so and get another 2nd or 3rd round pick for that…
I'm not ready to say goodbye
Can somebody magically make the draft, or OTA’s like next week or something?
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
I honestly don't think it's that bold of a prediction.
We’ll get roughly a THIRD of our roster back from injured reserve, Cam will have an entire offseason to sharpen his skills with, and we’ll have added depth from free agency and the draft. I’d be surprised if we weren’t playing deep into January 2013 (assuming, of course, that the world doesn’t end by then).
Newton for '11 ROY! (Update: Etch it in stone)
Walker for '11 ROY!
Biyombo for DPOY!
Knowing our luck, this is what will happen...
We’ll be 14-0, with two cupcakes left on the schedule to finish the year. We’ll have the #1 overall seed locked up, and will only be playing to set franchise records, and the freaking world will end on Dec. 21st.

At least we'd get to go out having seen 14 straight wins
This is how I roll, animal print pants out control.
I don't think we'll be 14-0 going into week 16.
As much as I hate to admit it, we have a lot of holes in our defense. Our secondary outside Gamble is a mess and without serious help it’s hard to see how that will improve. All I can hope for is that Kirkpatrick (as I believe Claibourne will be gone) can come in and provide as much help as Gamble did when we drafted him…
…However, today showed me that our safeties (especially Martin) are just awful… I don’t get what happened. Sophomore slump? I have no idea. Either way, when you see problems on your team, you need to take measure to make sure those problems get fixed. And yet even after all that is said and done, we have no immediate answer at defensive line. Rivera said it’s not as big a need as we may think, so I’ll take his word for it, but color me a bit worried.
Offensively, we’re fine. As long as Cam cuts back on the turnovers, we will be very difficult to stop. Tackle is a concern for me because Gross is getting older and Otah is never healthy. People seem to think we’ll be fine putting this off for a while since Gross has a few more years left, but that’s just not true. We need to start finding his replacement now. Not because Gross needs to be replaced now, but because we should want to have someone ready to take his place when that time comes.
So how do you suggest that we upgrade our porous Defense and get a replacement for Gross?
"Hope for the best plan for the worst"
"They laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at them because they're all the same"
In one year?
Not sure that can be done. I do think we’ll get to 10-6 or so though.
We should look at grabbing some help in the secondary though. Can’t let Ryan and Brees just pass on us at will like they’ve been able to.
I agree.
It’s not a task that is going to be accomplished in one year but it should be near the top of the priority list. Objectives such as finding a replacement for Gross and Smitty are topics that should not be overlooked as this organization continues to progress forward.
I really hope we get to the play-offs next season.

That sounded a little bitter there BW ; )
I knew it was tongue in cheek, but it was still a spring board into a more realistic discussion on the outlook.
My biggest concern right now is finding out what Chud is going to do.. When canwe expect to find out if he stays or goes? My worst fear is incase Chud goes we will be like the Rams. Everyone expected them to make the playoffs but because of a new OC coming in everything went down the drain and it killed Bradford’s season. If Chud goes expect a long long season next season
It's not just the OC for the Rams
They’ve been absolutely decimated by injuries and their OL has been atrocious. I really hope Chud doesn’t leave, as it’d definitely hurt the team if he did. But I’m sure there are plans in place, like just moving QB coach Shula up to OC to keep continuity.
We better do something because even Cam said today this will be the first time he has been with the same offense assuming noone leaves and he said hes keepibg his fingers crossed he doesnt leave.
by PantherTrain on Jan 1, 2012 11:39 PM EST up reply actions
That's a scary thought
All the success Cam has had throughout his career (both collegiate and pro) has come with less than a year’s experience in the system he ran. I do hope Chud stays because our offense has a chance to be absolutely lethal next year, and hopefully that’s enough to keep him around.
While part of me agrees, part of me would like to see Chud leave sooner rather than later
The guy is going to be an NFL head coach, there’s no holding that back. At this point I’d almost rather derail the train at 50 mph, than wait until it’s going 100.
Ok then we bring in another OC that does well and he leaves and it just goes on and on. Cam needs continuity. Whats scary is Derek Anderson wasa pro bowler until Chud left Cleveland then DA went downhill.
by PantherTrain on Jan 2, 2012 12:00 AM EST up reply actions
Is that what he stated?
I thought he was just trying to illustrate the potential consequences of Rob Chudzinski leaving the organization by providing a real life example in what happened to DA after Rob departed Cleveland.
"Hope for the best plan for the worst"
"They laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at them because they're all the same"
The difference is that Derek Anderson was a marginal QB at best who was a one-year-wonder with Chudzinski as his OC.
I’m trying to determine if PT fears the same thing with Newton and the ‘scary’ nature of Chud leaving is that he fears that Newton too is a product of Chud, rather than a good player in his own right.
Hence why I put a question mark at the end.
PT’s statement was emphasizing the POTENTIAL consequences of the OC leaving rather than comparing the two QBs.
"Hope for the best plan for the worst"
"They laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at them because they're all the same"
However...
I do think that Cam is much more talented than DA for sure. I just hope that this offense keeps on progressing and getting better for the future.
"Hope for the best plan for the worst"
"They laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at them because they're all the same"
I guess it all depends how much faith you have in Cam Newton
Personally, I think Chud drew up the perfect game plan for a 1st year QB, but I believe Newton is a transcendent QB who will lift an offense regardless of who the OC is (provided it isn’t Jeff Davidson).
I’m just not as worried as some about the prospect of him leaving.
I wouldn't worry about Chud leaving yet
Teams just don’t often hire OC for head coach opportunities anymore, not after one year. Recent history, Weis, McDaniels, doesn’t support the idea either.
We should have exact same coaching staff intact for at least another year, if we really exceed expectations I wouldn’t be surprised to hear a lot more serious talk. I think coaching staff met expectations but I don’t feel they blew them out of the water this season.
PT makes a valid point.
He’s speculating that a good bit of Cam’s success is attributable to Chud’s play selection.
Analogous to how Houston’s defense suffered when Wade Philips was not calling theirs.
He wasn’t equating the QBs, but how if one declined without Chud, the other might, too.
Frankly, I don’t think Chud goes anywhere in 2012. If an owner/GM want a new HC with OC skills, they’ll probably go with the known quantity in Norv Turner.
With the exception of John Fox failed head coaches very rarely get picked up to be head coaches again out of the gate.
I think there will be a good long cooling off period on Turner and he’ll repeat his pattern of being a standout OC for 1-2 years before the next team rolls the dice on him.
As it stands there are at least 4 teams who have asked permission to interview Chud, so unless JR is willing to throw money at him like Jerry Jones did with Jason Garrett I think he’ll probably leave.
I'll add... do you think Cam will decline as drastically as DA did without Chud?
As point of reference:
2008- 3,787 yards, 19 TDs, 14 INTs
2009- 1,615 yards, 9 TDs, 8 INTs
If 09 also the year they played switcheroo
with Brady Quinn. I agree DA is an average QB that Chud made look great.
I am a proud supporter of troll hunting.
CN and DA comparison
Newton has more talent in his pinkie than Anderson has known in his lifetime. We aren’t the Browns either. While we need Chud back Newton has a big career ahead of him regardless of what coaches he has.
No, I don't - just commenting on PT's post.
However, Chud certainly had a BIG hand in Newton’s success.
How might it have played out, if Newton had to play his rookie year, with Jeff Davidson as his OC?
The thing is
Coaching changes aren’t new to Newton. This was his first year in Chud’s scheme and he came out guns ablazing. He did the same at college. He’s had a new OC each of the past 4 seasons he’s played football on any level. I think by now he’s learned how to adjust to new systems. That said, I still desperately want Chud to stay. His importance to our offensive success cannot be understated.
I think Newton has helped Chud look good more than Chud has made Newton look good.
There have been quite a few questionable play calls that hurt the team. Newton has performed better than a lot expected no matter who his coach or team was in the past. For an example of bad play calling, look at yesterday’s game. When they were on the 4 yard line and had 2 RBs averaging over 7 yards each, on second down they pass the ball? Then they have Williams come in for the wildcat 2 times? They were lucky with the first 1 & Williams got great yardage, but the Saints knew that means run play when a RB takes the snap, Newton can run almost as good as either of our RBs so when you put a RB in for him it really limits the play call. I am not condemning Chud, just pointing out that he is not what is making Newton look good, Newton would make any OC look good.

That is an intersting way at looking at this, and I have to say it could have a lot of merit.
Would have to make GM’s question if it was the Chud or Cam that turned this thing around or at least helped make Chud look even better then his he was. Think about the success we have had this year on third down conversions. Seem to me Cam’s ability to extend the play or scramble for the first down was key to extending drives. I doubt any other QB could have done that.
I like collard greens.
Talk is cheap, potential means nothing
The team needs to shut up, work hard during the off season and come out with a different attitude. Guaranteeing here does nothing for next season, the work put into the off season does.
Life is what you make it brothers....
The team didn't make the statement it was Steve Smith.
"Hope for the best plan for the worst"
"They laugh at me because I'm different, I laugh at them because they're all the same"
I know, but I'm referring to him as 'team' anyway, im pretty sure the rest of the guys feel that way.
Life is what you make it brothers....
All in all I was really pleased with the season, I was expecting between a 3-13 to a 5-11 year.
I hope this team remembers this game all off-season and it leaves a bad taste in their mouth. I remember the story when Duke was crushed by Virginia in the 83 ACC tournament and a staff member said “Here’s to forgetting about tonight” and Coach K said “No, here’s to never forgetting tonight”.
I think this team could’ve been a playoff team had the defense not been ravaged by injuries. Either way, this team is going to have steal a win here and there next year while beating the opponents they should beat to get in the playoffs next year. Only beating a Yates-led Texans team, Indy, Jax, a bad Redskins team and the Bucs twice isn’t that impressive. What is impressive is the fact that pretty much every game was very winnable in the second half minus today and the Titans game. I’ll take our chances to challenge for the NFC South title every day of the week next year. Imagine this offense with OTAs and full off-season, preseason of practice. The defense will take some work but just getting healthier would do wonders and allow McDermott to blitz and be more aggressive.
Teams like the Saints better enjoy running up the score now cause this team is only gong to get better and when they do – the Saints may regret it. Very optimistic about next year – and to think, I was disappointed for “settling” for Newton when Luck decided to stay in school.
P.S.: I sincerely hope the coaching either drafts or goes into the free-agency to get our secondary some help. I think we’re fine at WR (Smith, Gettis, LaFell, Nanee…etc)
"I'm not going to waste my time with Tuukka Rask" - Cam Ward
You everyone on here complains about defense but umm new and GB have the worst defenses in the league so I think the priorities are out of whack maybe get a little Bette secondary and make the offense a force to be reckoned with. If NE can win 13 this year and 14 last year with a horrible defense why can’t we oh and belichick is obviously a more prestigious defensive coach than Rivera. That’s just my two cents
