One team's trash: More help at CB on the way?
This morning we have yet another possible waiver pickup for the Carolina Panthers at cornerback with 2nd year player Trevard Lindley being cut by the Philadelphia Eagles today as they resigned Joselio Hanson to a two year contract. It's important to realize Lindley would have been a Sean McDermott selection during his final year in Philadelphia, and could add more depth to the already weak CB position.
A 4th round pick out of Kentucky in 2010, Lindley played in 11 games for the Eagles last year, starting one game. Over this time he amassed 23 tackles, 1 PDef and 1 INT. At 6-0, 178lbs he's larger than some of the CBs currently on the roster and due to his knowledge of McDermott's defense could contribute fairly quickly.
In looking at these waiver possibilities it's important not to compare them to Chris Gamble and Captain Munnerlyn at the top of the chart, but rather look at them in relation to R.J. Stanford and Josh Thomas at the bottom. In this way Lindley compares favorably, and I would be surprised if the Panthers didn't take another flier on a CB through waivers.

One of the benefits of a 2-14 season
Is that we get the first crack at these guys. Almost all of our CBs are undersized and Lindley is definitely a big body for a CB. Bring him in!

Jake, Lindley Is Very Thin, Not Very Physical, & Lacks Strength
At least he was at Kentucky, I didn’t focus on him much with Eagles last season.
He's got his issues, no doubt.
But it wouldn’t be off base to call him the CB version of Greg Hardy. He’s a very talented young player who had a first round grade before injuries in his senior year caused him to fall.

I work out a lot, but that ahould tell you something if he is nearly 6 inches taller and only 15-16 pounds more than me. Speed, hell yeah, jamming receivers and playing physical hell no.

Well, there wasn’t much to focus on. He didn’t play all that much.

This.
Lindley has some talent, but he hasn’t been able to put it together at all. Size is no good if you’re not physical, plus I’m not sure that he’s even better than R.J. Stanford (who btw should have been cut for Robert Mclain).

Eagles wanted to him to fill out more and be the 2nd CB since Asante isn't a great tackler.
I don’t know if he couldn’t or they just didn’t give him enough time. But he was considered a first round pick before his senior season at Kentucky was plagued by injuries.

No help..
at DT but plenty of Pawns at DB..you’re still going to need push on the line and if you give a QB long enough to throw, he’ll find his target..
The available DT are Week 2 type veteran signings
If there were teams cutting recent highly drafted DT, we’d be claiming them too.

But give them a couple of weeks. Cut Brockel if Shockey is still working out and sign Shock-monster to a longer deal. I think he and Olsen are a perfect combo.

Yea but when you have 2 TE threats
Teams are going to struggle to cover 2 talented TEs with smitty running deep and a rb coming out of the backfield. Shock is a force even when double teamed. They are not going to double team the lesser known-just as talented Olsen until he starts scoring… then we can just go back to Shock.

Plus, TEs can be open without being open. If a LB or S has inside leverage, you throw it outside, and vice versa.

Why sign a vet like him when you might have a younger, better option?

I would not say that Olsen is not a known talent
Teams know who he is and that he is a very good receiver.

I didn't say he was a "not known talent"
I believe I said he is a “lesser known-just as talented”
:-P
Yeah I don't think that is wrong, per se.
Olsen, before coming to Carolina, was probably considered in the 2nd or 3rd tier of starting TEs…bottom of the top 10, if you will. Mike Martz and his glorified arena offense certainly didn’t do him any favor from a production standpoint.
But I think its safe to say that he is going to be the leader or be second place in receptions, and probably 2nd in yards…Maybe first in TDs. Its interesting when you actually start throwing some numbers around…
Cam Newton will probably complete somewhere close to 250 passes. That would be roughly 55% of 450 passing attempts. (Teams will generally run around 1000 offensive plays in a season, and 450 attempts is assuming we run the ball 55% of the time [which would be wise].)
So with those 250 completions, how many will go to: WR1, TE1, TE2, WR2, WR3, WR4, HB1, HB2, HB3, and FB1?
Let’s identify those players and estimate how many receptions they will have…
WR1: Smitty, 70
TE1: Greg Olsen, 60
TE2: Jeremy Shockey, 30
WR2: Legedu Naanee, 25
WR3: Brandon LaFell, 20
WR4: Armanti Edwards, 15
HB1: DeAngelo Willams, 15
HB2: Jonathan Stewart, 10
HB3: Mike Goodson, 25
FB1: Jerome Felton, 5
That is 275 receptions. That is 25 more than I projected, but I projected these one after the other without taking into account a running total…did it by feel, you could say (preemptive TWSS).
I don’t know who you would take catches away from to get down to 250. Maybe Smitty and Olson having 52% of all catches is too high, I don’t know. But I’m beginning to ramble.
Back to your point…Olsen has been a TE capable of having a probe owl season, under the right conditions, which most of us think he has found here in Carolina.
With 60 catches, and a career average per reception of 10.2, that would be 612 yards. Our offense is probably going to be a bit more vertical, so I’d expect that average to come up to 11.7 or so (I just added a yard and a half to 10.2), which would be 702 yards (on 60 rec’s).
Olsen has averaged 5 TDs per season in his 4 years in the league. This season we should see at least a slight increase to that. I’d say 7 TDs is a fairly safe estimation. (He had 8 in 2009—a year before Martz arrived.)
So with a line like 60 recs, 702 yards and 7TDs, he could be in the pro bowl, depending on the production of some other guys like Finley, Davis, Witten and maybe Cooley.

Good analysis ERL. Chud uses the TE like no other OC. I see Olsen with a big year (75 for 900, 9 TDs)
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
Philly's cuts are not the area I'd be pining for DBs from
Their secondary blew ass last year. Yes, they picked up DRC and Aso, but prior to that they were horrendous and was the reason their defense didn’t work properly.
I wouldn't only attribute it to their secondary, although it was bad
Their LB corps has been shite for sometime.

It's curious that you used the word 'though' concerning Warren's age.
Our biggest off season free agent move was signing DT Ron Edwards(now gone for the season, of course) to a 3 year contract, which means he will be 35 at the end of said contract. Furthermore, many have been beating the drum to bring in Jamal(35) or Pat(38) Williams to fill our gaping holes at DT. In other words, the fact that he just turned 33 shouldn’t keep us from giving him a call.
by Derek Leazer on Sep 7, 2011 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions
The reason for all the attention to depth at CB and Safety but none to DT is that
in the future, offenses will no longer run the ball. That’s right, it will be all passing. The Panthers are just ahead of the curve, defensively speaking. Forget the 3-4 defense. RR is about to unveil the 2-4 defense with 5 DBs on every play. That will surely get Jordan Pugh on the field.
I will probably just watch arena football, then.

Easy fix for the Panthers
Hire Bill Voth’s new company to consult with them.
First use 2 mikes for the interviews so you don't lose sound in the videos
Second, have the tweets be about more than pimping stuff on the website.
Third, have Hurney start tweeting.
Forth, actually produce interesting videos.

and a bit of personal opinion
that’s a shit ton of cash to drop on something that you’ll have to stream.
but to be fair, it is comparable to the money you spend going to a bar, I just don’t get good enough bandwidth to rely on streaming.
Yeah.
I’m not really concerned with watching games live, because you can really only focus on one game at a time, so…
What I have done the last three years is get NFL Game Rewind at NFL.com. On Monday, in my spare moments, I can start to watch ALL the games from that past week. Obviously I watch the Panthers’ game live, or almost live, but all the other games, its nice to be able to watch them as I please. And their interactive features are cool. Like skipping to a specific play, or the ‘coaches’ camera, which shows you the whole field so you can actually see the safeties pre-snap, and the WRs and DBs as they run down the field.
It costs $50, but that is $3 a week for 15 games.

I think - - - -
The 14 games refers to every Sunday excluding Sunday night and Monday night which are nationally telecast. If the Panther game, or games are being telecast on your local channel then it will be “blacked out” on NFL Sunday ticket.
Jim
Thanks guys...
….the cost is going to be four payments of roughly $85 – equalling $339 before taxes and stuff. I just really want to watch the games this year. I usually get DTV, but I got rid of that service and rely soely on streaming now. I just didn’t want to rely on finding a good (free) stream on the internet for the games. Thanks for the responses. I’m still thinking about it. :)

I think the games are available at 12:00am on Monday.
So being on the left coast, you’d be able to start it at 9PM. That still might be pushing it. But the cool thing about it is you have football to watch all week, instead of just getting a bombardment of it on Sunday.

You don't have to have a PS3 you can use a computer

Don't turn your back on the depth chart!
Monday’s headline was:
“Panthers elect to stand pat at cornerback, not bring in any veteran players”
By Tuesday afternoon they had brought in Darius Butler and Josh Thomas.
Wednesday morning they’re looking at Trevard Lindley.
If a team is carrying five corners and they’re changing three, my hasty math makes that a 60% turnover by “standing pat”?
Confusing, but sure is fun to watch!
Lindley would be a great pickup the guy has a lot of upside but the eagles just want more physical play in the secondary since Asante misses tackles. Trevard was suppose to be a really good prospect and could have started really soon but the eagles had some great CBs fall to them. Still not sure why they picked Joselio over him though..
