Stay away interns! A more accurate depth chart than you'll get from Panthers.com
Let's face it, the depth chart on panthers.com is bad; I don't just mean 'yeesh, that was a bad play Godfrey' bad, I mean 'WTF why is MacBern still in the game?' bad. I don't know who is responsible for the terrible depth chart currently on the official team site (we're blaming interns) but it still has Tony Fiametta, C.J. Davis and Ryan Pugh listed, and this depth chart was being tinkered with YESTERDAY... let that sink in for a second.
Since we are just a few days from the start of the regular season we think you deserve a proper depth chart, and while I don't claim to have any inside knowledge on this, at this point it's pretty clear how it will look. Keep in mind, this is a week one depth chart. As much as it pains me to have MacBern at starting RG it will probably happen this week because of his familiarity with the blocking schemes. It will take more than 5 days to get Hangartner and Jean-Gilles up to speed to the point they can start.

Man i love we got Felton and dumped Fia. Vikings tried to claim him as well..another running team. I think the kid is a big upgrade from Fia. I know he is on Madden haha

I am starting Stewart at FB for online games until the roster updates. Injured players can play online as well and the team rating increases to 84 if you set everything up right.

I like Felton
Granted we’ve seen very little if him, but he seems like a solid blocker and is somewheres competent in running the ball and in the passing game, unless I’m mistaken.

Randon Question
I have Madden 11. Is it worth upgrading to Madden 12 for $60?
by Scotch on the Prowl on Sep 7, 2011 10:26 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Personally, I’d hold off for a price drop or sale.
Don’t get me wrong, ’12 is really good and I like it a lot, but its not $60 better than Madden 11. Honestly, until the NFL draft I said I was going to wait for a price cut, but the prospect of playing with Cam was too much to hold me back on release day.
Thats my problem
I want to run the new offense with Cam, but that’s a lot of money for one player. I wonder if that’s what Mississippi State said to Cecil?!? Haha
by Scotch on the Prowl on Sep 7, 2011 10:31 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
To be honest, the Panthers are really frustrating to play as. It’s accurate, but the DL is just so bad the DTs get eaten from breakfast.

Thanks for the input.

toys r us had an online preorder sale for $45
I guess I should have posted that 2 weeks ago. I think 12 is much better than 11, the game seems much more realistic now with the new tackling system. Cam throws a beautiful deep ball but the receivers struggle with separation. The defense is actually not bad but that is with edwards and hogan in the lineup. I have also started using Godfrey in the slot like the staff will, he rates higher than any other option and it seems to have helped the secondary.

Here's what I did...
Sign Andre Woodson as a FA. Change his name and number to Cam Newton and #1.
It’s not completely accurate, but to me it’s better than paying $60.
(You can’t create a player in Franchise mode, or at least I couldn’t figure out how to do it.)

I did this in 2011 last week. Created a player that is.
Then I traded for Greg Olsen, Jeremy Shockey and Ron Edwards and got the team as close to this depth chart as possible.
Let me tell you, in Madden 11, Olsen is the man! He catches every damn thing my Cam Newton throws at him. BTW, I looked up Cam’s stats for Madden 12 online and set him up with the same stats, I didn’t cheat and make him a 99 player all around.
Then I went out and bought 12 yesterday anyway. Maybe not worth the $60 on its own but a bunch of my friends are also getting it or have it already and we are doing online tournaments so that increased the value a bit for me anyhow.
See, I’m a voracious seller of games back to Amazon.com, so I never keep them very long. My computer is set to alert me when a game is scheduled to price drop so I know I should trade it in soon.
Last year I sold back Madden 11 right around January 5th and got $35 for it.
That's a good deal James...
I normally keep games because I only buy ones I know I’ll replay over and over again, but I might have to look into your strategy.
The truth will set you free, but not until it is finished with you. ~David Foster Wallace
Now that I am older with kids....
I barely get the time to play games in general. Which is nice for me because I am about a year behind on games and can usually get the games once they go down to the $20 mark. For example I’m still playing Fallout 3 and God Of War 3 right now.
Madden is a bit different though from the playing online perspective. Looking forward to the new Metal Gear Solid and Elder Scrolls though, not sure I can wait a year on those!
My same philosophy
when you have a bunch of mouths to feed, 20+ for a game is WAY too much, although it pains me to wait when everyone else is talking about it!
You got a program or something for that? Or is it Amazon Prime or something?

I have e-mail alerts from www.cheapassgamer.com to let me know as soon as any retailer drops a price on games I own.
As soon as it drops at one retailer I trade in through amazon.
haha
I grew very tired of 11. I understand the $60 aspect but I would say it is worth getting if you can find it on sale. I will say that I would have paid $60 for it after having played it. The Panthers offensive scheme is already being lauded online as one of the top playbooks and it looks as if the franchise mode will be worth playing (as soon as the week 1 roster update hits).
by TXPanther on Sep 7, 2011 11:23 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
BW...
You can create a player in franchise, but it must be done BEFORE you start the franchise. You’ll need to edit the rosters as soon as you turn the game on…then your current roster (for all 32 teams) will be automatically loaded for use in franchise mode.

That makes sense then. I’ll have to do that. I’ve only played like 3 games anyway, so no big deal.

My random question
Did Madden 11’s franchise mode bug-out like 08,09 and 10? Honestly, franchise is my favorite part of the whole deal, and these bugs were obnoxious…not a violent man, but when the game won’t advance after a few seasons, i had never wanted to break anything as badly as I wanted to go Rambo on the programmers…
I probably missed some conversation on it, or didn't read enough about the cuts,
but was it ever said why we cut Clowney? I thought he was having a decent preseason and was a good sized WR..??

Because a flashy play doesn't earn you a roster spot.
You’ve got to be able to do several things well to make the team as a back-up. You’ve got to block, be a speed threat, have return ability, contribute on special teams, etc. to make an impression unless you’ve got a lot of upside. Clowney had one of those things: speed.

He's got one TD in his career.
That was in 2009 with the Jets. Couldn’t earn playing time there and couldn’t earn playing time here with an injured Smitty and two rookie WR. He seemed like a pretty good guy but I don’t understand why people can’t see that he just isn’t that good.

Two things...
It wouldn’t surprise me to see Hangartner start. We all know he’s better than MacBern and he’s already got chemistry with the guys around him. The second thing is that we’re gonna get gashed in the run game. Only three DT and Neblett is the most experienced? Ugh.

One thing I haven't see discussed
What does the 3-4 chart look like? Who is LILB and who is RILB? Is Fua the NT?
Although it was mentioned early on that there would be a mix of 3-4 and 4-3, it’s been non-existent in the pre-season.
I have a suspicion we’ll see the 3-4 quite a bit in Sunday.
Just my guess
But as far as our LB are concerned Davis would stay on the weak side, Anderson on the strong side, and we’d add Connor. If I had to guess who the “Jack” LB would be, I’d say Davis because of his elite athleticism.
With the DL things are a little tricky. Fua is our NT so I’d assume he’d be there with Johnson at one of the DE spots. The other DE spot is kind of open in our 3-4 sets, I could see either Hardy or McClain there. Hopefully after this week we pick up Olshansky to use as a 4-3 DT and a DE in our 3-4 sets.
So basically I just wasted a lot of words to say the only major change I see is Connotes coming on the field lol.

I think it more likely Norwood would come in as an OLB (since that fits his size) and have Hardy as the DE. At least when the OLBs push up to the line and show a 5 man front.
so it would be:
CJ, Fua, Hardy
TD, Beason, Anderson, Norwood
But, I see where you’re coming from.
The only reason I left out Norwood
Is that I seem to remember Rivera saying that he wouldn’t play LB.

Just like they where done looking at the CB position
Anything can and probably will happen. Though, honestly, I had forgotten he said that.
I'd be really surprised if we saw any 3-4 at all this season (except maybe for 3rd & Forever scenarios).
We can’t even get our 4-3 scheme to be somewhat effective…why would we throw another defensive strategy in the mix when we can barely manage “Plan A”?
Newton for '11 ROY!
Walker for '11 ROY!
Biyombo for '11 DPOY!

So we believe that Beastmode was telling the truth and will play Sunday?
Not sure I am on board with that. Personally I would still like him to sit another week and be sure he is healthy for the season.
On the other hand, it makes me feel better about the middle and our lack of depth at DT for the moment. On obvious running plays, Beast will be a huge asset when blitzing up the middle.

and still have ego/confidence is the definition of insanity. Seriously, if he isn’t watching himself on game film, curling up into a ball, sobbing for 10 minutes then heading directly out to lift or practice or make sacrifices to the football gods then he’s not worth a roster spot.
With Geoff Hangartner/ Max Jean-Gilles
I would think that Turnstile is on his way out and would expect to see one of the other guys in there very very soon. Maybe he will be the cut to make a roster spot to sign a vet player after this first game is over. Addition by substraction. Either way I don’t think he beats Geoff Hangartner/ Max Jean-Gilles for the starting spot and will probably be 3rd on the chart if he’s still here after Sunday.

The question is not how far. The question is, do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith, to go as far is as needed? - El Duche
It wasn’t accepted the way I said it before but if MJG starts over Geoff I’m going to be sad and afraid for Cam. As an eagles fan living in Philly I can tell you this guy is not a starter. He’s more of a guy who stands in the way of rushers and has never gotten to the second level in a play to spring a deep run block. This is why he was cut from the eagles who now run an attack blocking scheme with Howard Mudd with smaller athletic linemen.
A lot of people undervalue scheme knowledge for lineman
It is extremely important, as a single miscue results in a broken play. While MacB does get pushed back, he at least knows the assignments and is next to two great players who can mask his deficiencies for one game. Cam and DT can manage some poor blocking by the RG (as they have in the preseason), but when you have extra false starts and/or an unblocked blitzer or blocking failure due to a stunt, it flat out kills a drive. Also, poorly gelled lineman playing together can result in roll-ups and injury as they don’t know where to expect each other to be (see Zeimba falling on Williams). I think James is correct that we may see MacB Sunday.
As dissapointed as I am with MacBern, its come to the point where we’ve grown a vendetta as a fanbase. Why are the other backups not tested at RG? Because they are even worse at that position. That’s scary.
Maybe too much.

As a long time vet of the Patriots we know he’s coached up for sure. Just wondering how his 33 year old body is holding up.

I don't always dress like a pirate...but when I do, I do it in this picture.
I did a little research
And he looks pretty solid to me, almost exactly what we need. He defines himself as a space-eater, not a sack artist. In 10 starts for the Pats last year he had 28 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Belicheck apparently told him at the end of last year they wanted him back. It seems like he was cut because they have a lot of depth of their line. He’s a vet and a space eater with a ton of experience and some tread left of the tire. Seems like a no brainer to me. Sign him and we are much stronger and more experienced on the line.

Yeah I actually don't feel too bad about RG right now.
Piggy helps a lot with that. It’s not great by any means but better than it was a few days ago.
DT and CB are the areas that bother me most too.
Since we are also talking Madden on this thread and depth charts. In going through my Madden depth chart yesterday (and adding the players we’ve picked up that aren’t on the current roster update) I feel pretty good about our depth all around if we had back all of our players that were injured. Ron Edwards and Schwartz back as starters next year will actually give us a bit of depth at those positions and having Hogan back gives us a bit more depth at CB too.
I know this really doesn’t help for this year of course, but if we could pick up one each of a solid DT and CB we would be looking pretty good going into next years draft.
RG
is not quite as scary to me anymore, Turnstile will be bypassed on the depth chart as soon as Hangartner’s up to speed, which probably won’t be long. The question now is staying healthy for the whole season.
DT is still the big question mark for me, which will affect run and passing game. If they cant get penetration, that leaves the CB’s on an island and only time will tell if they’ll step up to the challenge, or be an added exposed weakness…
Hmmm... this is interesting
Adam Schefter
Eagles re-sign CB Joselio Hanson to a two-year contract and release CB Trevard Lindley.
Lindley was a 2010 4th round pick out of Kentucky, which means he was a Sean McDermott draft pick. Larger than some of our other corners at 6-0, 183lbs.
Played in 11 games for the Eagles last year, totaled 23 tackles, 1 PDef, 1 INT. One would imagine he’d be an upgrade over R.J. Stanford

Though there’s some word this is just the Pats playing with their roster and Warren will be resigned.
Yuck
Do you think they are going to stand pat to get through week 1 and then sign some one (Igor or Warren seem like legit starters) so they don’t have to guarantee money? This seems foolish as it is the most glaring weakness on the roster now (CB a very close second).
by ATL_Panther_Fan on Sep 7, 2011 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Anyone who they signed now wouldn’t play in week one anyway. I think they’ll use this week to evaluate which of the two DT spots is weaker and then determine if they need to upgrade the nose, under or both.
With only three DTs...
We will probably have to play CJ and/or Hardy at DT a bit, particularly on longer downs.
And, with only three DTs, we will probably see all three of them at both NT and under, depending on the rotation.
It was interesting to hear BAMF say that they might play some okie, and some 3-4. It makes sense, since those formations include only one DT.
