This afternoon the New England Patriots cut former 2nd round pick Darius Butler who was outplayed in training camp by the team's other young cornerbacks. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the biggest Butler fan in the world, both in terms of his charting statistics and the eye test when I see him play. That being said, for a team in dire need of a cornerback like Carolina they would be foolish not to use that first waiver claim to its fullest and get another player.
The best part about this is that Darius Butler is a no-risk proposition. Either he can help the team, or he'll flame out and fail but we're not talking about trading a pick for him. As it stands one has to imagine he'd be better than relying on Charles Godfrey in the nickel, and definitely better than any dime back currently on the 53, even if he's another small corner (5'10", 190lbs).
What do you think? Should the Panthers make a waiver claim?
