The Panthers continued to address their O line problems on Labor day by bringing back Geoff Hangartner. The 29 year old Texas A&M product played for Buffalo the last 2 years, starting 16 games and 12 games respectively. Prior to that, he was a piece of the Panthers O line that blocked for Double Trouble after Travelle Wharton went down, but mostly was a rotational player for CAR during his time here. He saw a lot of action in 2007 when he was part of a line that gave up 33 sacks for 4 different QBs that year and helped produce the second highest total of rushing yards in team history. Hangartner is smaller than MJG at 295 lbs, but is also taller at 6'5". In combination with MJG, we should have improved line play for Cam and the running backs now, and Cam has more time to throw, and our receivers not named Smith will have more time to get separation (a problem during the preseason).Courtesy of the brains at ESPN, here is the scouting report on him:
Hangartner has good size but average strength and athleticism. He is a tough, hard-nosed player with great instincts and technique. He understands angles and how to leverage larger defenders in the run game. He shows good vision to adjust to stunts and twists in pass protection. He can lose some one-on-one battles. He needs help from the guard spots and is best on combination blocks
