Panthers Sign OL Geoff Hangartner

According to Joseph Person and Steve Reed, the Panthers have signed former Panther Geoff Hangartner.  The 29 year old Texas A&M product played for Buffalo the last 2 years, starting 16 games and 12 games respectively. Hangartner can play either Center or Guard. This move should make Guard a position of strength for us after we also signed Max Jean-Gilles yesterday. Hangartner is smaller than MJG at 295 lbs, but is also taller at 6'5" I am sure that Cam is excited about this. As well as double trouble.

Courtesy of the brains at ESPN, here is the scouting report on him:

Hangartner has good size but average strength and athleticism. He is a tough, hard-nosed player with great instincts and technique. He understands angles and how to leverage larger defenders in the run game. He shows good vision to adjust to stunts and twists in pass protection. He can lose some one-on-one battles. He needs help from the guard spots and is best on combination blocks.

LOL I just posted on this as well

I should have been patient and waited for yours.

I think we are working on a CB trade right now. DT is still a mystery…..

you may be correct. i got the news on twitter. and the cut of considine was mentioned in the same tweet as our signing of hangartner.

It all came down at once. I am curious as to what we did to make room for Geoff H

Maybe getting rid of Considine freed up enough money to make the MJG and Geoff H signings work. Considine had a 2 yr deal, they are each one yr deals (I think on Geoff H anyway, MJG is a 1 yr deal).

great pickup, now in my opinion, we shuld get tommie harris and pat williams for DT, and some other good CBs

Pat Williams will miss some games due to the suspension for the StarCaps stuff

Harris would be good. PW would be welcome if he could start right away, but he has to sit some games due to the substance policy violations.

I didn’t realize PW was 38! I thought he was closer to JW’s age.

Love this move for solid depth.

I would think MacBern is gone now. If we can we probably will put CJ Davis on the practice squad. I also beleive a better trade is in the works for a starting #2 corner. Someone we all did not see coming here IMO. They have picked up a couple new developmental prospects at corner and got rid of some trash DB’s like this way of thinking. With the DT position the only player I can see come in a produce is Pat Williams unless another trade for that position is in the works. Tommie Harris’s body is worn down and would not want him. Earlier in free agency the name Antonio Garay was being mentioned alot. Would it shock anyone if that was a trade we tried to pull of now since the waiver wire and roster cuts have been gone through. We might have not seen anything we wanted besides the Harrison kid from Chicago. He was picked up cause he has a history with our D-line coach Eric Washington.

What CB's are on the market?

The only one I know of is Asante Samuels

Hes been on and off the market

First they wanted a 1sr round pick…. no one bit at that. Then they wanted two 2nd round picks…. no one bit at that. I personally feel like they can’t keep DRC, Asomunguah(spelling?) and Samuels. If I had to give up anything for him it would be a 4th and a backup player for him (not saying we have to have him but he would be a improvement)

by rscott94 on Sep 5, 2011 12:35 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

You never know?

With the right trade bait or deal in the works another team might come off someone that we here at Panther nation did not see coming. Just a little curios that we have not really fixed the problem yet it seems like to me.

by Smokewagon on Sep 5, 2011 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that is a pretty good sign that we are working on something bigger

Rather than just snatching people up off the wire or in FA. They know it is a problem, I would like to see Samuel come in as a mentor for Hogan but the price may be too high.

I just don't see why people are so worried about or current CB's. Captain is pretty good.

I would love to have Asante but that seems a little steep. The Eagles probably wont be able to hold on to him long though. DT is my big issue

by DoubleTTB22 on Sep 5, 2011 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

we really could use more depth at CB however.

for that we would look to FA but we apparently aren’t going too. maybe a trade. Or CB would go from so-so to pretty damn good quick

i am in agreement with you

If its draft picks we’re swapping we should think long and hard before repeating previous mistakes of over reaching for players (see e.brown, a.edwards). I also like pugh at nickle, that could work right?

Garay would be great if SD will cut him loose for the right price

We gotta get help at CB we are dangerously thin there. We cut Chevis Jackson so I think we are working the phones for a trade somewhere. If we want to improve we may have to trade rather than pull the wait-and-sign for more cuts.

What I do realize with just one week to go before the 1st game.

We will bring in 2 starters that are familiar with the defense schemes that we will run. So you have to look at players that can come in for a week of practice and be ready to go on Sunday.

I don’t think we’d roll into the season with Cam and DA. Plus he has a small contract and is only in his second year.

Maybe now...

Clausen has a chance to sit and learn… But up to this point, can’t say I’ve been impressed with pickles much at all… Now DA on the other hand, has been a pleasant suprise… He’s has shown through the pre-season at least that he is ready to play if called upon… But this is most likely Jimmy’s last season in Carolina… There’s no way he ever becomes anything more than a reserve back-up with us now…

Never say never

I think Jimmy is an injury from Cam and a multi INT game from DA away from starting again.

I know a lot of people are really down on Jimmy, but the kid has talent. He has shown improvement from last season, and I think next season he will be ready to lead a NFL team.

True, true, anything can happen...

But I feel like I have a better chance at winning the lotto, than Jimmy has at starting QB for Carolina… I’ve seen more improvement with Cam in a month, than I’ve seen with Jimmy since being drafted… He may have some talent, but his skills dropped him from #1 to #3 with BAMF… I learned my lesson last year when Jimmy showed us a spark, then fizzled out… Let’s be honest here… If Jimmy had ANY value at this point, he would be in trade talks… And NO ONE is knocking on the door… To be fair though… He was thrown into the fire last year, and that would be hard on ANY rookie… Now he can sit and learn, instead of running for his life… It should do him some good… I just don’t think the team responds to him well here in Carolina… Coach him up, raise his value a little, and hope someone comes a knockin next year…

I think we should cut Clausen and use Armanti as an emergency #3 QB

Due to his size it might not make sense in most offenses. But considering we are now installing plays that allow our QB to use his atleticism and legs often… That was exactly AE’s game in college. In a pinch, if Cam went out, we wouldn’t have to abandon our game plan and remove those plays.

I doubt...

we have a Vick vs Kolb situation going on, although I wish…do you think that Clausen has any confidence left..his confidence level has to be on the same par as Alex Smith, David Carr, or even Brady Quinn..I wish in the collective bargaining they would have optioned for a D-League or a Minor League..2 teams can share 1 team and instead of putting it in other countries like NFL Europe, keep it in the states..

We don't have a Vick vs. Kolb situation...

That’s why I said we could try to get a 6th or 7th round pick, instead of a starting CB and a 2nd round pick.

A team would give us a conditional 6th rounder for Clausen, especially if the team runs a WCO dink and dunk offense, which Clausen would be good in.

Ae hasn’t played qb for a year, barring a few mountaineer plays, he would be as rusty as the titanic now. Plus, if everyone is actually honest with themselves and stops looking at the world in AE tinted glasses…. Jimmeh was a better college qb anyway, ae would get obliterated just as badly in the nfl as a qb. Personally I hope we never find out as it might crush whatever confidence edwards has built over this off season.

or

Here’s a radical and probably massively unpopular idea…. Release ae. He can’t catch, he drops punts… I’m not really sure what he does actually. I get that he worked hard, but as long as he keeps letting passes hit him in the head people will call him a project who needs time, then a player we over-reached to get and finally a bust failed experiment. I hope it doesn’t end that way but people are fickle. I worry that one day only tater will be screaming his name. Maybe the same can be said about jimmy, I just don’t understand how ones a saint and the others a devil. Neither were great last year, surely jimmy should get the same second chance fans are so willing to give ‘money’?

Here’s the reason why: AE was a QB in college and is switching to WR. Jimmy was a QB in college and was dubbed “the most pro-ready QB in the draft” … they both had different sets of expectations, and Jimmy hasn’t come close to living up to any of his expectations, while AE has done as he was expected to, struggle to learn a new position in what is now a new offense.

actually i dont want either to leave

With expectations comes pressure, jimmy had a crippled o-line and coaching staff that didn’t seem to help him much. He was never going to deal with the pressure/ live up to expectations. He can’t shoulder all the blame for last years debacle. As you said, ae had no expectations/pressure. The pressure will be off jimmy this year, I’m hoping that he’ll show the same desire to improve as ae… Then at least he’ll be a good back up or trade option. You should consider being a GM!! I just don’t want to ditch him, only for him to get picked up in a WCO and do really well. Even if AE only makes it to 3rd receiver status, the fact that he can throw the ball extremely well will make him reasonably close to the pick value

A WR who commonly sees the field, yet can also torch you with his arm, is a rare commodity in the NFL, and is good for about 3-4 TDs in production, a season, based on that hybrid ability alone. That’s about as much as a #2 WR regularly gets.

If you’re not putting any value in his ability to throw, then of course you see him as a bust for the #33 pick. Give it time.

by ppalm on Sep 6, 2011 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

His versatility definitely improves his value...

if he is a 3rd receiver, gives us an extra dynamic in the wildcat as well as has success as a punt returner, that’s a lot of playmaking he brings to the team. A guy that can effectively play 3 positions is quite impressive.

His punt returning looks to be there as long as he doesn’t muff them, we know he can throw the ball well enough when needed, and he gets seperation on his route running. If he can start hauling those catches in and he’s pretty much there.
