Some observations of the Rivera era
It's interesting to see some differences in philosophy emerge under Ron Rivera vs. John Fox
1. Rivera has high standards that supercede loyalties. If he doesn't have the right DT's or DE's, he cuts and looks elsewhere. He doesn't look to keep marginal players year after year (think Dwayne Jarrett). Brown's gone, Irvin's gone, Sutton's gone.
2. Wants size vs. undersized players. Goodbye Brown, hello Norwood, etc. WR are bigger as well.
3. Going for more toughness to. Guys like Brockel and Harsock.
Overall, I like the changes and his no nonsense approach.

Think this could be THE wake up call
It definately is not about loyalty it is about results. He is truely a BAMF. He is sending a message about what he expects. i.e. get gashed by the run? You not only CAN be replaced, but you WILL be replaced.
Hard to tell much from 4 preseason games and one draft
But he is a breath of fresh air after last year

"magicman56", How Is 6-1, 256, Smaller Than 6-1, 242?
Brown was a step or 2 short on his pass rushes, able to get pressure, but few sacks. Norwood just isn’t big enough for 4-3 DE, unless he sets up wide in a 9 technique, avoiding the OT, as a situational pass rusher, and lacks the power to overcome 60 to 90 pounds heavier OT’s head on.
The Norwood's comparison's irrelevant, anyway.
It’s George Selvie who should be compared to Brown, as that’s who they just got to take his place as backup DE.
Selvie’s 6’4", 245, BTW.
John Fox was like Tom Landry in one important way
Foxy had a good system. Landry had a good system. Landry wouldn’t change…he just found the right guys to execute it, and then he won superbowls. Foxy also believed in his system. But Landry understood the value of a superior QB, and got Staubach. Foxy’s system would’ve worked perfectly with the right guys. When you don’t have the right guys, though, in today’s NFL, you have to adjust. Foxy refused to do that. It seemed that his gameplan was the same his last game in Carolina as his first.
I think Rivera is as loyal as Foxy. That’s why he brought in Nanee. The only vets he’s cut are vets brought in during the Foxy era.
But I do agree he is a breath of fresh air. I think Foxy’s system will never win a superbowl. I think Rivera, Chud and McDermott are gonna win multiple championships.
Fox's best/only shot to win a SB was 2003

RR is also going more with youth than aging vets
hangartner was an exception due to being one of the guys.
but he is building for a future more than bringing in older stopgaps. i know edwards was older, but besides that, almost every move leans towards building young talent

I don't think I would define Sutton as marginal ..
I think he could start or at least be a #2 RB on most teams. He just got burried in the talent that we already have here…but I agree with everything else you are saying. I’m very excited to see where this goes.
