Panthers Depth Chart Update

My apologies if this post seems redundant with last couple posts but I thought it significant enough because I saw a few surprises in the just released depth chart.

Starting with the offense:

WR Steve Smith Armanti Edwards David Clowney
LT Jordan Gross Bryant Browning
LG Travelle Wharton C.J. Davis
C Ryan Kalil C.J. Davis
RG Mackenzy Bernadeau Byron Bell
RT Jeff Otah Lee Ziemba
TE Jeremy Shockey Greg Olsen Ben Hartsock Richie Brockel
WR Brandon LaFell Legedu Naanee Kealoha Pilares
QB Cam Newton Derek Anderson Jimmy Clausen
FB Jerome Felton Richie Brockel
RB DeAngelo Williams Jonathan Stewart Mike Goodson

First off I'm surprised to see WR Armanti Edwards in front of David Clowney. I guess Edwards didn't fall after his less than stellar showing against the Steelers.

Basically it looks like tackles Lee Ziemba and Bryant Browning have been switched. I still expect the Panthers to add a RG to the mix through waivers.

We've got the defense after the jump...

Star-divide

The defense:

LDE Greg Hardy Everette Brown
DT Terrell McClain
NT Sione Fua Andre Neblett
RDE Charles Johnson Eric Norwood Thomas Keiser
SLB Thomas Davis Jordan Senn Jason Williams
MLB Jon Beason Dan Connor Omar Gaither Thomas Williams
WLB James Anderson Omar Gaither
LCB Chris Gamble
RCB Captain Munnerlyn R.J. Stanford
SS Charles Godfrey Sean Considine Kevin Payne
FS Sherrod Martin

Jordan Pugh

There are not too many surprises here other than simply those that made the roster to begin with, like Keiser and Jason Williams. Also notice that Charles Godfrey is back at SS and Martin at FS. We had speculated Martin had been moved to SS but apparently the experiment was terminated.

Thoughts?

Maybe they're gonna rotate

I can see Olsen onthe bench too often. I thought he had the best chemistry with Cam.

by usana_gaines on Sep 4, 2011 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it's because...

…they’ll be using a number of 2 TE sets on passing downs with a single RB behind the QB. Meanwhile, on regular downs, Shockey comes in as a blocking and receiving guy with 2 WRs and a FB to block for the RB.

by NSpicer on Sep 4, 2011 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Honestly Shockey had looked better than Olsen in the Preseason

He seems to be building better chemistry with Cam too

I tend to think so too

Maybe defenses are favoring Olsen when we run 2 TE sets. But I’ve watched both of them replay of DVR, and Shockey is just open more.

Byron Bell played left tackle Thursday, and played well...

Now he’s the backup at RG (for now). I don’t think I’d be feeling very comfortable if I were McBern.

My thoughts are that there's several changes coming.

Hopefully a couple OL (Jean-Giles and Piggy, please), multiple defensive linemen, at least one CB, and a young WR. This won’t be the depth chart for long.

As much as we need a RG to pass protect and run block, the defense is the bigger concern. This is a passing league and if we can’t get pressure with our DEs, the CBs we have will be eaten alive. At the same time, if our DTs can’t stop the run, we’ll never be able to control the clock and teams will be able to mix and match pass and run plays all day long on us, keeping us off balance enough that we’ll fall behind in every game and not have enough time remaining on the clock to play catch-up.

So, I’d be targeting the DT need first, maybe add another DE or CB, and then focus on RG.

Just my two-cents,

I cannot believe am disagreeing with you

And I am in only a slight way, but with our long term investment with Cam, I believe that a strong O-line is more important than our D right now. While our D is going to cost us games, the Turnstile may cost us our long term QB. That is a loss I find unacceptable. We have questionable depth on our D-line, but Mac-Burned is not even backup worthy.

I agree that we need help on the D, and will get it. But I think our focus on RG needs to be put before a DE and maybe a CB at this point.

Another perspective on it

We don’t want to fall behind in games and have to ask our rookie QB to beat them with his arm.

I do it awesomely.

I do not envy Hurney and Rivera right now. We have way more than 8 million dollars worth of need right now.

I'll agree to disagree...

Though I can understand your concerns about protecting your rookie franchise QB, Cam’s not made of glass or apt to hold the ball too long and take unnecessary hits. The offense is going to be dicey this year anyway. It’s a rookie QB. Cam’s got accuracy problems even when he isn’t hurried. So, it’s going to be a major learning year for him anyway. Offensively, if he can just do more in terms of keeping plays alive on offense (and he can with his feet, size, and elusiveness), that’ll be enough…for this year. And then, we can focus on shoring up the O-line with some premium draft picks and free agents next year. Or, maybe address it as our second or third priority via the waiver wire right now. Still, if you’re depending on the waiver wire to net you a starting quality RG, I think you’re reaching a bit. I’ll agree anything is better than Bernadeau right now, but it’s still not as big a prioirty as the defense.

Why? It’s not simply because defense wins championships. It’s because a good defense is necessary to pair with the type of offense we have right now. In other words, we don’t have a Peyton Manning with a stable of awesome WRs, TEs, and RBs to outscore people at will while fielding a mediocre defense. Our offense isn’t that high-powered (yet). We’re built for a slow methodical pace to beat our opponents. And it’s going to take time (and different personnel) to mold our offense into something that better fits Chud’s philosophy. He’s working on it in stages. Hence, all the TE upgrades. But it’s still going to take time. That means we need a defense that can slow down the scoring of our opponents.

If you look across our defense right now, the only area of strength is the LBs and they’re completely neutralized in both the passing and running game by the weaknesses in the other areas. Especially on the D-line. If you don’t have DTs that can command double-teams and hold their ground, your premium LBs can run to the ball and stuff it minimal gains. Likewise, if your DEs can’t get QB pressures and sacks, that puts a lot more pressure on our your LBs and especially your CBs to cover their man for far longer than it should take. Our DEs aren’t getting to the QB. And, our CBs can’t cover well enough to buy them time, which has our LBs trying to compensate for them either by blitzing (and therefore opening up more seams) or dropping back to augment coverage (which isn’t their strongsuit).

So, to me, the imperative is clear. We’ve got to address DT in a major way first. It’s important to stop a team’s running game or they don’t even have to bother with throwing the ball, which means they eat up clock, pull ahead in the score, and then we’re left in a losing position because we’re not built as a comeback team. Next, you’ve got to address the DE or CB position. One or the other…and preferrably both. We paid big money to Charles Johnson and we’re counting on Greg Hardy to own his starting position. They’re decent DEs still growing into their roles as starters. If we want to stick with them, we need to upgrade the CB position so we can find some good cover guys to buy the DEs time to get to the QB (i.e., coverage sacks).

Once we address those two major needs, then I think we turn our attention to RG. And, after that, maybe another DE to enhance the rotation. And, the cool thing is that we don’t have to pursue these things in sequential order. We can go after addressing all those needs at the same time. But again, the waiver wire isn’t necessarily going to find you your long-term fix. To do that, we either need to make a splash in free agency for a guy who’s proven himself. Or, we need to strike gold in next year’s draft. Hence, this season, I think everyone needs to curb their expectations. As Rivera says, it’s a “work in progress”…and that’s both for him as the new coach, Cam as the rookie QB, and Hurney/Rivera in finding the right personnel mix to carry out how they’re trying to remold this team.

All of those are bold moves to be taking on at once. But, a rookie head coach can’t go slow. Rivera only has limited time in which to make an impact. So, why not address all these things as fast as he can? He has a window of opportunity to shake things up. And, because of all these foundational changes, it’s going to take time for everything to come together.

Just my two cents,
—Neil

Correct...

For the Panthers, I think he’s been playing RT almost exclusively…unless they’ve been trying him out at LT, too. I don’t recall seeing him at LT against the Steelers, but I admittedly wasn’t scrutinzing that game all that closely after Cam went out in the 1st quarter.

I don't agree with

Lafell ahead of Nanee or Shockey ahead of Olsen but I can live with it. Also Macburn, Stanford, Neblitt and Keisler shouldn’t last the week IMO.

Like it or not, LaFell is more versatile than Naanee.

The Shockey/Olsen thing doesn’t bother me since I think they’ll both be on the field a lot. MacBurned needs to get the hell out of here. I’m sick of thinking about his sorry play. Of the others, I think Andre Neblett could stick around. Stanford and Keisler will probably be outie like a belly button.

DE George Selvie Is Very Slow (4.96-40) & Lacks Explosion (30 1/2 Inch Vertical & 9-1 Broad Jump)

Insight on why he got cut:

Harrison happenings

It was indeed not a day for Bears defensive-line draft choices. The Indianapolis Colts released former No. 1 pick Tommie Harris, whom the Bears arguably held onto too long after making him the highest-paid defensive tackle in the game at one point.

Harrison had his opportunities but failed to seize them. He started nine games in 2009 and had flashes of production. But even after Harris was released earlier this year, Harrison did not work himself into competitive condition and reported too overweight to practice the first week of training camp, not the first time for a camp conditioning problem with him.

Even a few late performance surges were not enough to get him past Anthony Adams, Henry Melton, Amobi Okoye, rookie Stephen Paea and Matt Toeaina, and the Bears were never going to keep six defensive tackles.

Honestly one of the DT’s on waivers that have been proclaimed to be potentially solid starters is DT Robert Callaway from the Lions and I really want the panthers to bring him in.
