The Friday Five, Week 4 vs. Chicago

Greetings Panthers fans, and welcome to this week's edition of The Friday Five. This week the Panthers travel to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bears with the opportunity to even the season record at 2-2, and to match the win total from all of last season. (Trust me, it hurts me to write it just as much as it hurts you to read it.)

Both the Panthers and the Bears are sitting at 1-2 and 3rd place in their division, and both the Panthers and the Bears want to leave Sunday's game at 2-2. Offensively this is going to be one of the tougher challenges the Panthers will face, as the Bears have one of the better defensive units in the league that's led by MLB Brian Urlacher, CB Charles "Peanut" Tillman, DE Julius Peppers (an old "friend" of ours), and SS Chris Harris (another old friend of ours). This will not be an easy task for Cam Newton and the rest of the Panthers offense, but on the other hand this isn't an impossible game that the Panthers have no chance to win.

While the Bears are certainly no pushovers (if you ask me they're one of the better teams in the NFC), this is one of those games that the Panthers could absolutely win provided they limit their mistakes and don't allow the Bears to jump out to an early multiple-possession lead. (Of course, this is easier said than done.) After the jump we'll look at five things to watch for on Sunday as the Panthers try to sneak in to Soldier Field and steal one from last year's NFC runner-ups.

Follow me after the jump...

Star-divide

1. Matt Forte

Let's face it: the guy is pretty good. Not only is the guy pretty good, but he's a major factor in the Bears' offense. So major, in fact, that he leads the team in rushing AND receiving, and is currently responsible for 40% of the team's offensive production. Right now, the only thing he doesn't do is throw touchdown passes...but then again, neither does Jay Cutler. (Cue obligatory rim shot. Thanks, I'll be here all week. Try the veal.)

In all seriousness, if the Panthers want to win this game, they must stop Matt Forte and prevent him from being a factor in this game. Without Forte, the Bears offense is quite beatable, because no one in their receiving corps not named Johnny Knox puts any fear in an opposing defense, and from where I sit it's a stretch to say that Knox has that effect on opposing defensive coordinators. So, if the Panthers can shut down Forte, they can win this game.

The way the Panthers are going to have to shut down Forte is by shutting down the screen pass option that Cutler likes to use with Forte. Currently, Forte is averaging 13 yards per reception, and he's not getting these yards by running go routes down the sideline. He's available as a check down option, and he's getting huge yards after the catch (enough to get a first down on most plays). This could be a problem for the Panthers, who have already lost their two best cover linebackers to injury.

Forte currently averages 3.4 yards per carry, so he's not destroying opposing defenses with his rushing attack. His best game thus far was against the Saints in Week 2, where he rushed for 49 yards on 10 attempts, and caught 10 passes out of the backfield for 117 yards. This week, the onus is on the defensive tackles to hold their ground and stuff the run, otherwise the defense could be in for a long day if Forte is able to wear down the defense with his rushing, only to start catching screens out in open space as the game wears on.

2. Panthers' Running Game

Let's be real here: the Panthers aren't running the ball with much success. Carolina currently has the 24th best rushing attack in the NFL at 84 yards per game, and regardless of who you want to blame, that's just not good enough. In order for this offense to be successful for any sustained period of time, the running game has to be effective to take some of the pressure off Cam Newton. The Bears are middle of the road in rush defense, allowing just over 100 yards per game to opposing running backs. The Panthers must take advantage of this and get both DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart involved in the rushing attack if they want to walk away with a victory on Sunday.

So far this season we've witnessed that Stewart has been the better option receiving out of the backfield, and the Panthers are going to have to continue that trend if they want to have success against the Bears. Stewart's going to have to catch some screens and check downs out of the backfield and get positive yards after the catch in order to keep the defense honest and help open up the vertical passing attack, which in turn will (hopefully) allow the Panthers to put some touchdowns on the scoreboard.

3. Panthers' Defensive Line

I've already covered the defensive tackles, but I wanted to also mention the defensive ends. Greg Hardy and Charles Johnson are going to have to get pressure on Jay Cutler and disrupt his timing in order to keep the Bears defense on the field for as long as possible in order to wear them down enough to have continued success late in the game. If the defensive ends can get consistent pressure on Cutler and force him to make bad decisions with the ball, the Panthers should be able to take advantage of those mistakes and force some turnovers, and if everything goes the way I'd like to see it, score a defensive touchdown or two.

4. Jeremy Shockey and Greg Olsen

Cam Newton's going to have to utilize his tight ends against the Bears' Cover 2 defense, because the Bears are going to do their best to shut down the deep routes (especially Steve Smith), and Newton's going to have to use the other arrows in his quiver if he wants to be successful in this game.

Hopefully (for personal reasons) Newton is able to use Greg Olsen in a way that makes Mike Martz hang his head in shame for not realizing the caliber of player he had before he decided to let his talent waste away in a scheme that didn't properly account for his ability to catch the ball downfield.

I have a feeling that both Shockey and Olsen will be important pieces to the Panthers' offensive attack on Sunday, and I won't be surprised in the least of one of them comes away with 100+ yards receiving and a touchdown or two. (Note: for fantasy football reasons, I hope it's Olsen.)

5. Devin Hester and Johnny Knox

It's simple: don't let these two guys kill you on special teams, and you have a much better chance to win this game. These guys are phenomenal kick returners, and the Panthers are going to have to prevent them from getting huge returns that either score the Bears points or set them up with great field position to give them a higher chance to put points on the board. If the Panthers can keep these guys in front of them and not allow them to streak down the sideline towards paydirt, they should have a successful day. And please don't fall for the same trick that the Packers fell for last week, which was a holding call away from being the most awesome punt return touchdown in the last decade. If the Panthers can keep that from happening to them, they've got a shot to steal this one.

That's it for this week's Friday Five Panthers fans. Feel free to expand upon these thoughts with any comments you may have below.

I have a feeling our DE's

are going to win this game for us. I think the Bears will over look us as a whole. Our Offense will do just enough. And our secondary will play decent. But I think Jay gets rocked early and often and we win the turnover battle.

Chicago could possibly be looking past us.

After all, we’re only the lousy “2-14 Panthers,” and they have a big Monday Night faceoff against the currently undefeated Detroit Lions next week in a very important division game…

I wouldn't count on it.

If the Bears were 2-1, then you may be right. But they are 1-2, so they’re hungry for a win and chances are they won’t be taking anyone for granted. I think the Panthers are going to be taking Chicago’s best shot and are going to need their A game if they want to win.

by pancanbra on Sep 30, 2011 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I don;t think the Bears will over look us.

We have their old D coordinator, their most reliable receiver and they need a win as badly as we do. Plus we play them so often they might as well be a division opponent, so they know what kind of team we are.

I think this may wind up being the best game of the season. It’s a shame I have to work thru it. So I am asking nicely, could you guys not ruin the game by taking about it in the open thread Sunday?
Thanks.

The Video Of The KO'ed Boxer, Flat On His Back Unconscious, Still Throwing Punches (In Slow Motion) With Both Arms Would Be Great For This Game

I’ve only seen the video once, a couple of weeks ago, while flipping chanels, on of all things the TV program “Wretched” (a late night religious program out of Charlotte). They never named the boxer, but he looked like a middleweight.

If you guys (James, Jaxon, BW, or Newsinz) can find this video it would make a great post for anytime a team just gets KO’ed, or falls in a big upset.

I was hoping to find a gif real quick, but there’s a few videos of him “sleep boxing” on YouTube.

Completely agree BW

Matt Forte scares the crap out of me because of the versatility he brings to the table. With TD out now we lost a lot of lateral speed from the linebackers, and when they use him in swing passes that scares me.

He is basically going to decide the game. If we stop Forte we win if we don’t Bears win. The rest is just background noise

It wouldn't surprise me

If Rivera and McDermott employ a lot of Nickel to keep a Safety on Forte at all times. That’s what I would do. I don’t think we have the LBs currently on the field that can cover him one-on-one. I say put a decent cover safety on him and dog him all afternoon. Just completely take the short pass away from the Bears. Then we have Gamble and Martin on WR #1 and Munnerlynn and Godfrey on WR #2 the only two real receiving threats they have. I think this defense would work.

It's not him running the ball that scares me

It’s his 287 yards receiving and 13.0 yards per catch.

The Panthers have absolutely no answer for that.

by James Dator on Sep 30, 2011 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Forte Is A Great Receiver As A RB, But His Receiving Numbers Are Being Inflated This Year Because The Bears Poor Pass Blocking Is Forcing Cuttler To Dump The Ball Off More Often

The Bears 2 best WR’s (Knox and Hester) are feast or famine big play speed receivers (Knox 21.0 YPC and Hester 19.9 YPC), and often Cuttler isn’t getting the time to throw that deep, so he’s checking down to Forte. So in a way, settling for a shorter pass to Forte is like a win for the defense.

Not when he's getting 13 yards per reception, which means a first down and a continued drive.

YPC isn't very relevant when you aren't making the completion to those receivers.

Knox and Hester have a hard time getting open, and the offensive line has a hard time giving Cutler enough protection to allow those two to get open.

13 yards on 1st and 10 is… well, I’ll let that sit there.

13 YPC to a receiver on a check down route when we have suspect coverage in our LB corps is deadly. If we let Forte catch the ball on a swing pass, he will eat us for lunch all day long.

Well they have good reason.

Last season (with Beason in the lineup) he carried the ball 22 times for 166 yards and 2TDs. Granted he had only 2 catches for 22 yards, but in the case of that game, they didn’t need to throw it with Todd Collins because they were having their way with us on the ground.

If we can contain him on the ground—much like we did against MJD last week and we are getting pressure on Jay Cutler, then they will be compelled to pass and get the ball out of Cutler’s hands as quickly as possible—enter the RB screens and the like.

More like...

We didn’t WANT to throw it with Todd Collins. His four interceptions in that game alone should provide ample evidence.

In fact, both running backs that game had more carries than Collins had passing attempts. We tried staying as far away from that as possible.

So let me get this straight…

Your possible defensive answer is to let Forte get 13 yards per reception, or force the Bears to run Forte, which would mean an average of 5 yards per carry (possibly more against our DT’s) and let them nickel and dime us to death up and down the field, taking our offense out of the game?

I See Reading Comprehension Isn't Exactly Your String Point "BW", Or Just Trying To Twist & Invent False Statements, Isn't That Called Lying?

So, let me try to untwist the web of lies in your last post.

I never wrote a single word even hinting that 13 YPC for Forte would be acceptable. The only thing you could even twist into this is my writing that a 13 yard catch was better than allowing a 20 or 21 yard catch to WR’s Knox or Heaster. Silly me, it just seem obvious that a gain of 7 or 8 yards less on a “Shorter pass to Forte is like a win for the defense”. I guess simple math isn’t your strong point either.

How did you ever come up with, “Force the Bears to run Forte, which would mean and average of 5 yards per carry (possibly more with our DT’s)”? You really jumped th rails on this one. I never suggested jusy letting Forte run, you just made that up (shame on you). When on Earth did you dredge that 5 yard per carry number? Forte is only averaging 3.4 YPC this season, on 35 carries for 119 yards. Inventing lies never proves a point.

I’m very sorry to have to write this way, but falsehoods against me must be corrected.

I’m very disappointed in you “BW”, I had hoped your were better than this.

And one last thing...

If you would go back and re-read my original comment that got your panties in a wad, you’d see there’s this little thing on the end of it called a question mark. I wasn’t “making up lies” about you or anything you said. I was asking you a question. A question that apparently is over the line as far as you’re concerned.

You said this:

So in a way, settling for a shorter pass to Forte is like a win for the defense.

I wholeheartedly disagree with this sentiment. Settling for a highly efficient play that gains an average of 13 yards is not a win for the defense, and that’s where the basis of my question was coming from.

But, if you’d rather take it as I’m lying and twisting your words, then more power to you.

Nope...it's not my string point. It is my strong point, though.

The problem with the 20-21 YPC figure is the pass is low-percentage play. Screens to Forte that allow 7 fewer yards per pass, but are completed at a higher rate, will in fact be worse on our defense as they will just keep dumping it off to Forte and keep marching down the field.

The 5 YPC figure was a typo. For some reason I recalled that he was averaging 5.4 YPC, not 3.4…my mistake there.

You seem to have taken this very personal. Apparently my best course of action is to just avoid discussing anything with you in the future, for fear that I will hurt your feelings by disagreeing with you. Best of luck to you, sir.

Nice rundown BW

I’m starting to get used to reading this article every week. Keep ’em coming.

One thing you might want to include as a possible number 6 is the Panthers’ O-line keeping Cam Newton clean. You know the Bears are going to unleash Pep on him every chance they get. If Peppers can consistently play in our backfield, it might turn into a long day. I think Gross and Otah are up to the challenge, but there’s just no denying that Julius peppers is a force of nature that must be contained at all costs.

I hope Cam breaks his ankles like he did to Clay Matthews, Vick used to give Pep fits. Yeah Vick is quicker but Pep was also a lot younger. Be a interesting match up to see if/when peppers does break through the line. Easily the two most athletically gifted guys on the field come Sunday

Absolutely.

And hey, he racked up some stats but the Panthers still did a good job of keeping him out of the end zone and at the end of the day we got a win.

Actually they did a way better job of stopping MJD than I expected them too, so I think there’s hope for our run defense yet. I’d be way more confident they could shut Forte down if Beast and/or Davis were there. We got a win without them last week, but it’s going to be a lot tougher this time around. Certainly winnable, though!

The only problem is, I am only in 2 leagues and I missed the draft in this 1. I got stuck with random picks I guess, but it still isnt a bad team. If this freakin Vick can play a whole game again I might win some weeks. I’m scared to sit him if he plays cause when i do, he is gonna have a 40 point fantasy game.

Right

I try to become completely objective in FF. I draft whoever is going to be good and I’ll start players that matchup well against the Panthers. Nothing’s gonna change by me doing that. And if I lose a fantasy game because the Panthers shut somebody down I have starting, great, gimme a Panthers win over FF win anyday.

Curious, for fans of football like you over there, is Football a secondary sport to others like Soccer or are you just a football fan exclusively? What got you into Football? I just can’t enjoy Soccer because the pacing, while continuous, does not have the mental overload dynamic that Football features.

by ppalm on Sep 30, 2011 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

lets get one thing clear

There is only one football of here (soccer as you america’s insist on corrupting it) and it is THE sport. I love football but really got into american football cuz I love rugby. Having said that american football is starting to take off in a big way. There’s serious talk about trying to get a london based team in the next ten years. The honest perception of american football for a long time was a stop-start game with a million too many ad breaks and people over here tended to get bored. They’ve changed the format now showing more of the game and cramming breaks into half time.

The superbowl always draws in large numbers now despite being on stupidly late. I think the things is people either 1) didn’t really understand the rules 2) thought it was a poor mans rugby or 3) couldn’t be doing with how over the top some things are. The more people watch it the more they realise how awesome the sport is.

Finally if I had to watch the mls I would hate football too… Its balls and not even becks could save it. Proper football (like watching barcelona) is an art form of skill and brilliance

To be fair, yes, the skill level difference is astronomical between the MLS and the European leagues. Even an untrained eye can see how huge it is…with the trained eye its even worse. Still, its not a sport where replays are an absolute necessity to catch even half of what happened.

I think this game comes down to three key things...

1) Matchups - They say everything is about matchups at the NFL level. And I believe we’re going to struggle in covering Matt Forte (due to the injuries to our starting, speedier LBs). Chicago, too, is going to struggle in covering the TE. So, this game could easily be determined by who better exploits (and compensates for) their mismatches. I’m hoping Greg Olsen has enough motivation to win his battles more often than Forte manages to do against us.

2) Field Position - It may seem odd, but I believe our special teams will have a huge role to play here. To win, we’ve got to pin down their return guys and keep their offense in situations where they have to go a long way to get in scoring range. That gives Cutler more time to implode due to our heavy pass rush…and should hopefully force Forte into taking longer to move the ball down the field. Conversely, the better starting field position we can achieve, the more it helps Cam and the offense score points and keep the pressure on the Bears. I believe it’s important to get ahead on the scoreboard as early as we can so we force Mike Martz (and Lovie Smith) to abandon their run game and make Cutler play from behind. We do that and it’ll be far easier to just focus on rushing the passer…while also covering for our defense’s greatest weakness (i.e., stopping the run).

3) Turnovers - Yeah, it’s cliche to say that. But the more we can short-circuit Chicago’s offense by forcing them into turning over the ball, the more it helps Cam and the offense control the clock with multiple possessions (and chances to score) to pull ahead. The Bears will be looking for the same thing. I suspect Chris Harris and company will try to force a few fumbles when standing our guys up. If Peppers shows up for this game, he could also trigger some hurried throws from Cam that result in INTs. So, we’ve got to protect the ball and make sure we don’t forfeit any of our possessions on offense.

Beyond that, the teams should be pretty evenly matched in what we can do. It’s going to come down to who wants it more. The Bears are desperate for a win to try and keep pace with Green Bay and Detroit. Otherwise, they’ll fall far enough behind in their division race that their likelihood of making the playoffs becomes almost non-existent. Likewise, Ron Rivera was moved out of his position as defensive coordinator with the Bears when Lovie Smith wanted to bring in Rod Marinelli. Up until then, Rivera had a Top-5 defense for two consecutive seasons. He deserved to stay. He knows it. The league knows it. And you better believe he’s interested in making sure the Bears organization knows it after this Sunday. Let’s sit back and watch who gets their team prepared the best for this one.

Just my two or three cents…

other random stuff

This would be a good week to see Armanti Mania get som egood punt returns or two. As Neil pointed out, the field position game is huge, and Armanti can definitely help out. I think overall we can slow down their offense. The issue is that we have had two losses where we’ve given up at least two 48-yd or more TDs.

I think we have an advantage in that Olsen knows some things about their offense, and can help us recognize a couple plays early, but if Forte can get a couple 30-yd plays, it could get ugly.

I think we should use a defense similar to what Arizona did to us…blitz Cutler all the time. I think if he gets hit enough early, then he simply isn’t in the mood to play in the second half, and wants to take his ball and go home.

by usana_gaines on Sep 30, 2011 10:12 AM EDT reply actions

Our punt return team hasn't helped Armanti out at all.

When given a little space which has been maybe 2 or 3 times, he’s done well.

I actually don’t think we’ll need to blitz Cutler all that often. Big Money and the Kraken have been playing outstandingly thus far and da Bearz O-line is a sieve. Also when Cutler’s gotten in trouble he swings it out to Forte who busts off a first down nearly every time. We’re going to need men in coverage to prevent that.

Butler should be able to keep up with Hester/Knox given his supreme athleticism. And Cap’n goes without saying, I think he’s outstanding and makes me believe we really don’t need to go after a corner in the draft next year.

The Bears are favored by 6.5

How can they be favored by that much when we are better than they are in every aspect other than rushing yards allowed? Here are the stats from the nfl site (not ecact stats but close, just to make my point.).
Offense We get 100 yards per game total offense more than the Bears.
We get 70 passing yards per game more than the Bears.
We get 30 rushing yards per game more than the Bears.
We get the same points per game.
We get 10 moer first downs per game than the Bears.
We get 3 minutes more of time of possessions than the Bears.
Defense The Bears allow 30 total yards per game than the Panthers.
The Bears allow almost 40 passingt yards per game more than the Panthers.
The Bears allow 8 rushing yards less than the Panthers per game.
The Bears allow .3 points more than the Panthers per game.
The Bears allow almost 5 third down conversions per game more than the Panthers.

This just doesn’t Look like a game that we should be the underdogs in, It looks more like a game we should be favored to win to me. I am not worried about the Bears, I am looking past them to the next weeks game.

Two reasons:

1. The Bears went to the NFC title game last year, we were 2-14. I know this is 2011, but they do base their spread somewhat on last year when it’s still early in the year.

2. The Bears are at home, which is an advantage.

But, the bears only won 1 of those games.

The Packers are the defending champs, & we almost beat them. We lost to them by less than the Bears did.
The Jags are ranked 4th in total defense, we beat them. (Saints and Falcons ranked 21 & 22 in total defense)
Cardinals are ranked above the Falcons in total offense.
Arizona is only ranked 27th in defense but I account that low ranking to them having to play our #7 total offense.

This is essentially a new team, so no

New offensive scheme, new defensive scheme, new QB, new secondary receiving targets, new philosophy.

Until teams dial in on their expectations of our play, our stats mean fairly little. GB started to understand it, Jax got a decent grip on it, the Bears will probably have a pretty good grasp of how to play against us. We won’t know how good of a team we are until we outplay a team who knows us like the back of their hand.

by ppalm on Sep 30, 2011 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Not when basing "we should beat this team because..."

Because anything less and you fall under the SSS problem…you can’t say “we’re so much better than Team X because we’re 4th in passing and they’re 26th in pass defense” when you’ve only played four games. It doesn’t work that way. You have to have more data to base it on, and 8 games is enough information to determine where teams really stand.

The best thing about extrapolation after one game,

is that half the league is 16-0 and Super Bowl champions, and the other half are getting the first pick in the draft.

They're the Bears, we're the Panthers.

We have to prove ourselves over and over again. Conversely, respect is given to the Bears. Pains of a small market expansion team.

As I said in the other thread...

I think strength of sched is being pretty overlooked in this whole “being favored” thing. We dominated Atlanta and also had the Packers and Saints. The Panthers haven’t quite had that level of competition as of yet.

Plus, there’s all the Chicago money the sports books are looking to get their hands on.

You dominated the Falcons, the only game you won.

& their defense is ranked 23rd in the nfl, so I don’t see that being any better than us beating the Jags whos defense is still ranked 4th after they lost to us.

If this were a Week 10 matchup, I'd agree with your point.

But because this is only the 4th game of the year, what both teams have done this season doesn’t play that big of a role in how the spread is set.

Possibly they're ranked 23rd

because we had a very good offensive day against them and that makes up a third of their ranking. The Eagles are a strong offensive team, and the Falcons held the Bucs to 295 yards in a loss.

Things i hope to see this game. Chud put the controller down and stop playing Madden! When you have a lead with 2 minutes to go in the half, TAKE a GD knee or run it so you can take halftime with a lead and not risk a interception!

Can we finally please kick off and get the ball at halftime for once! much better to get the ball at after half time.

And ofcourse the obvious, run game stepping up, Cam passing for tons of yards followed by scores.

oh and I almost forgot. Rivera, have more faith in your kicker to make 50 yd field goals! Mare can make those with ease, if Mare would have kicked that field goal that game would have been a lock last week.

overall we win this game 23-20, if thats not the score we win by 3 either way.

Off subject, but anyone else here think next week against the saints could be a trap game and we beat them? Especially if they beat Jags sunday, they will be due for a loss and we are playing at home. Can you imagine if we beat the Bears, Aints and Falcons!?! One can dream cant he?

You might want to ensure the other team doesn’t have any timeouts, because if you “take a GD knee”, they will use their timeouts to get the ball back, and they could score on you just as easily as if they intercepted a pass.

Off subject, but anyone else here think next week against the saints could be a trap game and we beat them?

What’s wrong with trying to step on their throat? The reward outweighs the risk, because as a coach you trust your defense to stop your opponent if there is a change of possession. That play by the Jags at the end of the first half was a fluke…that doesn’t happen 99% of the time.

I was hoping they would try to get the first down when they punted that 1.

Everyone said the fieldgoal would put the Jags on the 45 if they missed it, but they were on like the 30, and if they just tried for a first down, the worst is they give the ball away at the 30. As it turned out, they gave the ball away at the 20.

I can see the logic behind that call.

But kicking the FG and missing it gives the other team the ball where it was kicked, not where it was snapped from. So, you’re right — if they were to do anything but punt, going for it on 4th down would have been a better move.

Yes, it was.

That’s what I don’t get about why people are mad we punted in that situation…the field was a swamp land…there’s no way any kicker would have made a 50 yard field goal on that field…or there’s no way a coach in a tight game would feel comfortable enough to give up the field position if he missed.

The snap/hold would have been the worst part of it.

True.

Plus, I could just see Mare slipping in the mud and tearing his ACL. We don’t need that.

Honestly, in this scenario is was a win/win lose/lose situation no matter how you play it

You attempt the field goal and botch it or miss it you are asking for trouble and it becomes a “why the hell would you even attempt that?” situation.

You go for the 1st and don’t get it then it’s a “why didn’t you punt it or go for the field goal?” situation.

We opt to punt it and now it’s “why didn’t you kick the field goal or go for it?”

If we go for it and get it, it’s brilliant, if he kicks the field goal and makes it, it’s brilliant. Instead we opted to punt it and ALMOST got it downed inside the 10 again which would have been…. brilliant.

Hard to fault Rivera on that situation at all. As BW said, that TD at the end of the half was a fluke and doesn’t happen if it isn’t raining like that. As much as it contradicts the “playing to win” scenario above, punting was the right call IMO.

by MindMachine on Sep 30, 2011 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I think punting was the right call, given the condition of the field.

Kicking a FG was out of the equation because of the field. (Too many things can go wrong on a wet field with snap, hold, and kick all being factors.)

Going for it on 4th down is a risky call, but we did have the lead, and you have to trust your defense given the field condition and a rookie QB.

Like MM said, the punt was “oh so close” to being downed around the 10 yard line…if that would have happened, the move would have made even more sense than it did with the ball being at the 20.

The thing that got me was the fact that we were penalized while covering the punt.

Their drive started on the 30 anyway. You just can’t do that in that situation.

I've been looking for somewhere to post this, and here's as good as any

When i rewatched the game, i noticed that Mare went out onto the field and took a practice kick. He had his poker face on afterwards but if i was betting, i’d have bet he didn’t like his hole cards. My take on this is that Rivera said, “Hey Mare, you think you could drill a 50 yarder on this field?” and Mare said “Dunno boss, lemme check” (trots out, takes a swing, thinks, trots back) “No boss, this field is no good”

I honestly think Rivera gave Mare the chance to make his own call. Did anyone else see that?

Very winnable game...

Nice way to lay it out there BW I agree Forte needs to be shut down to make that happen. Receiver wise I say Lets hope Gamble can not only play but be effective at corner

...

And also, Cam needs to learn to throw it away more. I appreciate his drive and willingness to keep things alive, and I can understand how hard it is for someone like him to just throw the ball away, but hes gotta do it.

im still waiting on that big run by Cam also, im talking a 40-50 yd run for a TD which involves some jukes and stiff arms that will make ESPN’s top 10 plays. That kind of run

The last thing rookie QB's learn is to throw the ball away.

It’ll come with time.

That must be why everyone thought Clausen was the most NFL ready QB

He had the whole ‘throwing it away’ thing down from the start.

I agree with throw it away more

But my heart goes into my throat whenever Cam runs. These defenses would love to tee off on him and the “protections” a QB gets dont apply if he is a runner.

by docnolz on Sep 30, 2011 12:01 PM EDT reply actions

I don't particularly like the designed QB runs

but him taking off when the pocket collapses is beneficial for our offense. The defense then has to take that into account. Plus Cam’s done a great job at getting down to avoid the hit, not to mention it’d take a pretty big hit to hurt Cam. IIRC it was last week when a Jaguar player was bearing down on Cam from behind. 90% of the time the QB gets absolutely popped and coughs up the ball. Not only did Cam not crumple like a box of Krispy Kremes in between Duke Robinson and Jeff Davidson, he didn’t even lose his grip on the ball.

I am one of the few that likes them

I think it keeps defenses honest when we’re in the shotgun. The handoff draw isn’t really working very well, but the designed runs keep the LBs close an allow him to use a stutter-step as a play-fake. I think, that while they are only averaging 3YPC, it opens up the pass game. I can also see several options out of the play that can make it very dangerous. We’re seeing it a lot with a 2-2 formation, so it could be turned into a pitch to the opposite side for a DWill run or he can roll back over to the pocket for a TE release dump-off.

An important part of football is being able to do a lot out of the same formation so as it disguise your intent and catch defenders off-guard. I wouldn’t be surprised if the run was actually an option for the QB, and he was allowed to make the choice upon seeing nickle & dime sets playing off the line against our 2-2.

I would love to see some variations out of it.

As it stands right now, if I may rephrase, I don’t like the frequency of them. Once we throw some variations into it, I’ll be more on board. In times perhaps.
