We have 53, but it's far from final
With cuts through we now have a 53 man roster, but make no mistakes this is not a 'final' roster by any means. Currently the Panthers are carrying just 3 DTs and 3 CBs showing what the coaching staff thought of the talent at the position. I believe we'll bring in two defensive tackles and one more cornerback. But, without further ado here are your current 53

Possibilities
I still see with this roster 5 to 6 more moves/cuts still coming. I can’t believe they still will keep Brown or MacBern it must be a Marty thing????
if you're referring to everette brown
im not following you. sure, he’s a disappointment considering what it took to draft him, but he can be a serviceable third down pass rusher and still very young. considering the lack of depth in the pass rush or even dl department, they would be crazy to let him go.

why keep brockel and not sutton?
brockel didnt show me anything
"We want them to play fast, we want them to play physical, we want them to play hard and most importantly we want them to play smart." RR 8-3-11
i get that he's not a FB but
he also gives you running, receiving and special teams, brockel hasnt shown any of those
"We want them to play fast, we want them to play physical, we want them to play hard and most importantly we want them to play smart." RR 8-3-11
Because they aren't even close to equivalent players
Brockel is a true H-back, while Sutton is a fairly slow running back who can block when needed.
Brockel is still on the Bubble IMO...
We still have to sign: 1 or 2 DTs, and/or 1 or 2 CBs. Gotta make more cuts for that.
Some Good TE's Were Cut Today & 1 Might Replace Brockel
Most are TE’s with very good potential that haven’t lived up to their Combine numbers.
Veterans With 4 Years Or More – Free Agents:
Dante Rosario (6-4, 250, 4.76-40) – Broncos
TE’s On Waivers:
Shawn Nelson (6-5, 240, 4.52-40) – Bills
Dorin Dickerson (6-1 3/8, 226, 4.40-40, 24 Bench Reps, 43 1/2 Inch Vertical) – Texans
Mickey Shuler (6-4, 251, 4.61-40, 28 Bench Reps, 10-11 Broad Jump) – Dolphins
Fendi Onobun (6-5 3/4, 252, 4.45-40, 11-1 Broad Jump) – Rams
Colin Franklin (6-6, 256, 4.68-40, 28 Bench Reps) – Buccaneers
Schuyler Oordt (6-5 3/4, 261, 4.63-40) – Rams
I really am curious PanthersRoar
You seem to really pay attention/care about combine results. I’m interested in why?
I ask because we’ve seen time and time again that the combine rarely, if ever, is a reliable predictor for NFL success.
The Combine & Pro Day Numbers Give Up A Measured Baseline Of A Player Raw Physical Ability
A player likely will never gain speed in the NFL, but as he gets more used to playing in the NFL his reaction times can increase how fast a player gets form one point to amother, and good coaching can help that adjustment come more quickly, over a long period of time (2-3 years or so, but depends how well the player listens).
Each position has basic measurement requirements that scouts consider a minimum to play the position. A good example is Kendric Burney. Burney’s 5-9 3/4 height isn’t a problem, but his very short 29 1/4 inch arms, combined with his poor 32 1/2 inch vertical jump (most DB’s jump several inches higher), and that combined with his height causes him to play much lower than other DB’s. With that, combined with his lack of speed, a 4.75-40 (slowest at the Combine), a 1.62-10 (tied for 5th slowest at the Combine, some DE’s are faster), and 4.45 20 yard shuttle (slowest at the Combine), it’s just too far outside the norm to be successful in the NFL. Some times a players change of direction speed can help overcome a slow 40 0r 10 time, I like the 10 times much more than the 40’s, it’s not that often a player runs more than 10 yards. The 10 yard split time roughly equals the distance for a QB sack, it shows how fast a WR can get off the line, or a RB get through a hole, Here is a great example of how a good 20 yard shuttle time can help a player overcome a poor 40 time, SS Shiloh Keo (5-11 1/4, 219) just like Burney ran a 4.75-40 at this years Combine, but he ran the fastest 20 yard split of all the DB’s, a 3.90 to Burney’s 4.45. This change of direction speed is even more important for D-Linemen, LB’s, RB’s, and receibers. A great example of the effect of a 10 yard split being more important for a D-Lineman is DT Jerron Gilbert (6-5, 288), a 3rd round pick in 2009 ran a great 4.81-40, but his 1.67-10 was one of the slowest times, so in the NFL he can’t get off fast enough on the snap (note the shift in stadiums in 2010 slowed the starting numbers so that Gilberts 1o yard split would now be around 1.72-10).
Here are the Sporting News Optimum numbers for an NFL CB – 6-1, 205, 4.40-40, and their Minimum numbers – 5-9, 175, 4.55-40.The numbers differ slightly for nfldraftscout.com, Optimum 6-1, 195, 4.40-40, and Minimum 5-9, 180, 4.55-40.

I get how the combine works when trying to project players as they leave college
I just don’t understand bringing them up again once said players reach the NFL.
combine numbers are important
But I think at some point in time, you have enough other evidence to look at. Vernon Gholston is the perfect example. At this point, I’d say Burney is more likely to continue his career elsewhere than Gholston, but if you look at the combine numbers, you see why Gholston was drafted so high. At the same time, you have to look at what happens on the field. As you get more looks at a guy through TC or actual gameplay, the importance of combine numbers simply fades away. I remember many people comparing Gabbert’s 4.61 40 to Cam’s 4.58, but look at the tape and see if you think they’re comparable at all running the ball.

like I Wrote "James" It's A Baseline Of Raw Talent & The Combine Is Only Wrong About As Often As A Pllayers College Production Is Wrong
It takes a mix of a players numbers, their college production, and what’s in their heart to evalueate a players NFL chances, but those basic workout numbers represent the upper limits of a players physical ability. Those number, just like poor college on field production can rule a player out of consideration if they aren’t good enough. If a players doesn’t live up to those numbers, then it’s because of a lack effort, a lack of understanding, a lack of proper coaching, or injury. All of those can be fixed, except maybe injury. That’s why new teams will give players a 2nd or 3rd chance, because the team that drafted them may have played them out of position, or in the wrong system for that players talent, and they think they are just the right person/organization to develop that talent where others have failed. Of course some players are field fast, while others are field slow, but may have track speed, and you make adjustments for that.
Here are the position measures look for (Minimum to Optimum) fron the Sporting news.
OB – 6-0 to 6-3 – 195 to 225 – 5.00 to 4.60-40
RB – 5-8 to 6-1 – 185 to 225 – 4.60 to 4.40-40
FB – 5-10 to 6-0 – 225 to 240 – 4.85 to 4.60-60
WR – 5-9 to 6-3 – 175 to 220 – 4.65 to 4.40-40
TE – 6-2 to 6-6 – 235 to 265 – 4.95 to 4.55=40
OT – 6-3 to 6-7, 290 to 335 – 5.30 to 5.00-40
OG – 6-1 to 6-4, 285 to 330, 5.45 50 5.00-40
C – 6-1 to 6-4, 285 to 310, 5.30 to 4.90-40
DE – 6-2 to 6-5, 250 to 285, 5.00 to 4.60-40
DT – 6-1 to 6-4, 280 to 315, 5.20 to 4.90-40
ILB – 5-10 to 6-3, 235 to 250, 4.90 to 4.55-40
OLB – 5-11 to 6-3, 230 to 245, 4.90 to 4.50-40
CB – 5-9 to 6-1, 175 to 205, 4.55 to 4.40-40
S – 5-10 to 6-2, 190 to 220, 4.65 to 4.45-40
Of course our own personel ranges might be slightly different.
I can’t think of any reason someone wouldn’t think these numbers aren’t important. If you cite a varified number for say speed (40, 10, or 20), strength (bench reps), change of direction speed (3-cone drill and 20 yard shuttle) then you have undenighable proof to backup your point, and without some substantitive evidence to support your argument, it just unsubstantitated opinion, and you’ve proven nothing. Every point needs some independent varification, or else you have no hope of agreement, because your just arguing your opinions.
How does the saying go, “The race is not always to the swift, or the fleet of foot, but that’s how the smart money bets”?
I’ll gladly compare my draft selections for the Pathers pick against the actual picks, and do better than the Panthers (except for that Dre Moore mistake).

But like James said..........
It’s useful for evaluating talent coming out. After they’re in the league, it’s fairly useless information. It might still apply to rookies that get cut, but not really for anyone that’s been in the league for a season or more. Measurable ability has little bearing on whether or not they can play with the pros. College stats are more useful, but even they aren’t worth much because they seldom translate to production in the pros.

You know PRoar, I don't think it so much that you put combine numbers in, but more how you list them
My english teachers used to dock points for using more than one set of parends in a paragraph because its considered a cop-out to proper sentence and thought structure (unless you’re intending to sound like Foghorn Leghorn). Your posts are hard to read because there’s so many stats jarring what you’re actually trying to say.
It would be a lot easier to digest your posts if you were to evaluate their stats in your paragraph for what they mean, like “he’s slow for a DE and barely compared to Hardy’s speed when he was hurt” and then listing the combine stats in some sort of tabular format at the bottom. A blog, and these comments, are meant to be like normal verbal discourse. You wouldn’t stop mid-sentence and rattle off combine numbers in person, would you?

Based on that parameter, you must REALLY hate jamie's posts. :-)
Hey, some people like the stats, some don’t.
Let’s cut PR some slack here. There are many posters here who contribute nothing but reaction posts – they’re the ones who should be challenged to change. PR’s trying to supply info, not just opinions, and I applaud him for that. Let’s read it or ignore at our own discretion, and move on.
I like Jamie's posts.
She’s very insightful. Everyone on here obviously has access to the internet. When the info in question has debatable worth, it could just be linked for those that are interested to view.
All I said above is that I didn’t find the information useful. I never asked anyone to stop posting anything nor did I criticize them. PR decided to take something personal when some of us disagreed with him. I seem to be the one he decided to single out.
Strange that James is the one that questioned him to begin with but I’m the asshole.

Especially when it’s players I know nothing about. I like to know what they’re capable of physically – which the Combine is a good indication of.

Yea, I get that.
I just don’t see it as viable information after a guy has been in the league more than a season. Most of these guys change a lot after getting in an NFL weight program. That being said. A large majority of these guys just can’t play.

Obviously, it's not everybody's thing, but I like seeing the combine results, especially for players I haven't seen a lot.
I think there’s a niche group in the membership that likes to look at the numbers, whether it’s pre-draft, times like now, or there’s a particular position of need. I say keep’em coming PR. People that think they don’t mean anything don’t have to read them.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
Personally, I wouldn't have any interest in any of these guys.
The combine numbers mean nothing to me.

My picks
OG: Hangartner, Leonard Davis or Brian Waters
DT: Igor Olshanksy, Tony Brown
CB: Lito Sheppard, Joselio Hanson
WR: Brandon Tate, Donnie Avery
I don’t know how much he has in the tank. It’s important to note he’s missed 14 games in the last three years due to injury
If we plan on playing Pugh @ CB
I would make a claim on Merriweather. The guy is talented as hell, and I don’t care how much we like Godfrey and Martin, this guy is a player. I would go after Tate over Avery. Tate made plays for an elite team, Avery hasn’t really been that good for a bad team. I hate the Pats as much as the next guy. but i would jump all over these cast-offs…
Here are the player we should be looking at to bring in.
OL Geoff Hangartner,Max Jean-Gilles
CB Joselio Hanson,Perrish Cox,Brandon Meriweather
DT Tommie Harris,Igor Olshansky,Ogemdi Nwagbuo
WR Brandon Tate,Mardy Gilyard
Also can someone tell me why Richie Brockel and CJ Davis is still on the team??

If you have the Steelers game recorded, watch Brockel blocking from the H-back spot (started the game).

I think putting Hanson at nickel would make our CB situation okay. I'm more concerned about Gamble at 1 than Cap at 2.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
So, I've been reconsidering Captain as the #2. I was a proponent of finding a taller guy and keeping Cap at nickel.
But after watching in preseason, I can’t recall a single time he was beaten because of his height. I can’t even recall a time he was beaten. I can’t say the same for Gamble.
If the over-under on how many times Captain loses out because of height this year is 5 times, I’ll take the under.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
i continue to maintain
captain is an adequate #2 corner in this league, and it’s just his 3rd year

Captain isn't like most small CBs
He loves contact and benches 400…He is my favorite Panther and if we had a couple of tall stud CBs, he would be the best nickleback in the NFL. He will be a very good starter for us this season…
Smaller corners biggest problems...........
usually happen when they are in the trail position against 6-4/6-5 receivers. Other than that, they can usually hold their own with the best of them. The height issue with CB’s is really over rated, in my opinion. I’ve seen too many smaller guys be successful to feel differently.

Not 100% on this but
I’m pretty sure Duke Robinson was cut earlier this week. Also according to the Observer, McClain, Fua, & Neblett are the only DT’s left on the roster. Glad to see Hayden cut, he was a 3rd round bust that we let stick around to long. Also happy to see CJ Wilson lookin for work elsewhere. Duke should’ve learned from the same mistake he made last year. Don’t come into camp overweight &outa shape. IMO we should put Pilares on IR for this season. He needs time to develop anyway. That would open up a spot for Tate or Avery. I’d also like to see Nathan Vasher & Joselio Hanson brought in. Vasher or Tate could be the return man we need & let Armanti & Captain focus on their primary positions. Don’t care who we get at DT as long as they’re young and 300lbs plus. Tired of undersized and aged DT’s. Nothing against Ron Edwards he’s just the latest in a long line since Jenkins left. Go Panthers!!

Has Sutton gotten off the plane to Denver yet?
I can’t believe they cut him! He did everything they asked of him. I’m not saying he could replace any of our top three, but, unlike some RB’s, he generally managed to stay healthy and rarely laid the ball down while consistently moving the ball.
Judging from some his blocks, I dare say he could have stepped into the role of our missing Catamount if asked to. {Man, has our backfield missed Hoover!}
I’d be willing to bet Fox was on the phone as soon as the word came down. Regardless of who grabs him, I’ll bet Tyrell gets some playing time outside of Charlotte.

Denver might let him fill the spot left when Foxy cut Rosario.

Hello my CSR homies. =)
Yeah, so my internet situation is still an issue – but I’m still working on it. At least I can read CSR from my phone, but my phone refuses to let me comment. My phone has suddenly turned from quality smartphone to piece of crap.
Anyway…I miss writing my multiple daily novellas and interacting with everyone. =) And I apologize for my rambling and not-so-organized comment – I’m just spitting out a lot of my thoughts at once (because I have limited time to comment).
So, starting off slightly off-topic, but I just watched the South Carolina-ECU game…and I’m just not crazy about Alshon Jeffery. I’m just not. Just like I wasn’t crazy about AJ Green last year. It’s not about any glaring issues – they just don’t “wow” me in relation to the hype that they get. Maybe it’s because I pull for the underdog. I liked Julio Jones better last year, and I like Justin Blackmon this year. And, back to the game – Lewis from ECU is the WR who got my attention. And Lattimore just needs to plant his butt down in BoA Stadium until he’s eligible for the draft – he doesn’t need to bother going back to Columbia. The dude’s a freaking beast (BTW – Clowney’s also a beast). Just add Lattimore to our current RB stable and enjoy the rosterbation. =)
And continuing with the RB theme – hearing about Sutton was one of my most recent “WTF?!?” moments. I have to think that it was just a case of needing roster spaces for other positions. I hope it all works out for the best for him and he gets some real playing time somewhere else. I think that he was able to show that he’s a very solid all-around back. He deserves to play.
Hurney better have the paperwork flying off of his desk. The lines on offense and defense are on lifesupport. My reaction to the news of Schwartz being moved to IR was “Shit!” My reaction to G. Williams’ injury was “Double Shit!” The following is not hyperbole…MacBern does not belong in the NFL. Period. He’s a liability. I personally think he’s slightly less of a liability when he plays LG instead of RG, because for whatever reason, he just seems more comfortable there – but you should never have to have that kind of liability for even a 2nd or 3rd string player. Hangartner!!! Come back!!! Ziemba and Bell (if they both manage to stick on the currently in-flux roster, which I really hope they do) – step up, and in a big way. I’m also now firmly convinced that if Matt Kalil is available with our 1st round pick this year, we have to get him. It’s Gross negligence (horrible pun intended) to not anticipate and address such important positions as those along the O-line.
DT is still a nightmare, but at least they’ve cut some dead weight. Now, to find live and useful weight… If Tommie Harris had legs left, that would be perfect.
Hmmm…Tate and Meriweather?!? I have to say that I’m certainly intrigued. There may be better out there, but those are two names that I really did not expect to see come out on the waiver wire.
I want to see what the staff is going to do with Jordan Pugh. The man has been flying all over the freaking place – making plays and cleaning up everyone else’s mistakes. He seems like a versitale player – like one who could literally play anywhere in the secondary.
I’m very pleased to see that Thomas Williams is still on the roster. Just like Jordan Pugh, T. Williams was flying all over the place and making plays. I hope that he’s able to stick. I’m afraid we’re going to have to let go of one or two of the LBs still left in order to make room somewhere else (OL, DL, CB, WR). As much as I like Jason Williams, he may be the first option to go if they do cut another LB. If I’m not mistaken, Gaither has played all three LB positions, so he could slide out to WLB if Davis is injured. Senn’s a pretty good LB, but he’s a very good ST player, so he’s probably safe. And T. Williams has been so electric that I’d find it hard to let him go.
One last line of thought – QBs. Umm, I’m kind of shocked to say it, but Derek Anderson might be kinda valuable. He seems to be taking this mentoring sh!t seriously. And he hasn’t looked atrocious like I expected him to. That toss to Clowney was gorgeous, and it was nice to see the hookup with LaFell, too. Good for LaFell for making that adjustment – I needed to see something out of him going into the season. Clausen – poor thing. I can’t remember who first mentioned it (Vagus?), but it really is like Murphy’s Law. Cam – I saw a hint of Roethlisberger in that incomplete pass to Shockey. Like a lot of other people have said, it’s kind of odd to be praising an incomplete pass. But it was a thing of beauty – a ball with lots of velocity, on target, all while in mid-fall from a tackle made on him while he was on the run. Stupid non-call for the pass interference.
Anyway, the next day or two may be filled with a lot of excitement – can’t wait to see what happenes with waivers.
Well, I’ve satisfied my craving for a novella-writing sessions. =) Take care, everyone! I’ll still be reading your witty conversations, even if I can’t comment.

Basic gist...
I was on a camping trip with my parents when I was about 4-yrs.-old, and we were in a pop-up (it’s the thing that’s kind of like a tent-trailer hybrid). My mom thought at first that I was snoring and tried to wake me up (but I’m basically in a coma anytime I sleep), and then she woke my dad up. But the snoring sound didn’t stop.
It ended up being a bear. According to my mother, the bear’s paw pushed in on the mesh part of the camper above the bed so that its paw was literally touching my head. =)

oh good gawd you think Newton's pass was a thing of beauty?
you’ve done a terrific job of not summarizing Panther fans’s expectations/desires, but the franchise’s. Let me complement what you’ve written:
ECU game: I go to ECU. disgusting. Blackmon is a future draft idea, so is Garcia. I have never seen a college quarterback come in with such a … not a fire, but a freaking inferno. This guy was meant to play football. I am going to keep an eye on Garcia, he might prove to be better than Luck. Lewis, yes…. a stud WR. I hope NFL scouts pay attention to him.
RBs: Sutton was Prince in my book (we have two Kings at RB), and I kinda of value him more than I do Goodson, but I don’t cry over his departure… dude will prove to other coaches that he’s worth so much more than the 4th spot on an RB depth chart.
Picking up waivees: It’s in Carolina hands, I can’t say anything that won’t change their mind.
Derek Anderson is GREAT trade bait, but we need him. he is proven. clausen has proved that he cannot play an NFL game. we trade, and we have no #2. I love D.A. and I hope he stays here.
great write-up, you really should think about literature rather than commenture (made that up)

You reply to him, but nary say (type) a word to me in my time of internet struggles? =)
Anyway – from the few games I’ve seen of Garcia (and from what I’ve heard)…
I think he’s really a very talented guy with a lot of potential, but I just don’t think that he WANTS football enough to make a future out of it (too undisciplined).

That’s actually why I don’t think he’s NFL material. It’s like he doesn’t really want to be great. He had the potential to be a consensus All-American, but he pissed it away year after year.
But oh well…all I care about is that he wins games in 2011. What he does after this year is his own deal.

I’ll try if you say so, but I’ll have a hard time unless he’s picked by the Panthers and then makes Jerry Rice look like a bum. =) I honestly don’t know why, but it’s a trend with me – hyped up WRs just don’t wow me like I think they should based on the hype. Of course I loved Michael Crabtree back in the Texas Tech days and thought he was worth every ounce of hype and more…but he’s done nothing of note in the NFL other than holdout on his rookie contract like a diva.
9. I hope you get your internet situation fixed soon…I miss reading the novellas.
Thank you! =) I just assumed that if all of my neighbors had DSL that I could get it, too. Strangely enough…not the case. And satellite internet’s expensive crap. I’m trying to work out some fancy super-powerful router trickery. =)

the best thing for MacBern
Would be to take him behind a shed a shoot him. Really I think that’s less cruel than letting him try to eek out his pathetic nfl career. Wouldn’t you put down your dog if he was suffering?

i would make a real comment
but that’s just way too much for me to read. I’m gonna assume I’m dumber for not reading it, and say thank you for trying to keep me informed.
LOL...
At first, I thought you wrote, “I’m gonna assume I’m dumber FOR READING it…” My first thought was, “Where’s the Billy Madison picture?”

Then my second thought was, “Wow, that was unnecessarily rude!”
I’m glad I re-read the comment so I didn’t walk away offended. =)

It's so desperately sad
That people who come to a blog, where the whole idea is to READ, can’t be bothered to read. I enjoyed your comments this time and just in general. I have no problem reading a long comment if it’s well thought-out and has good construction, and yours generally do that just fine. God save us all from the 140 Characters Or Less Generation.

I'm in that 140 character or less generation
And resent that comment. Speaking for myself I do come here to read other fans comments and enjoy the broad range of opinions.
The fact of the matter is a lot of other people can make the same points as Jamiedk in a paragraph instead of a short story.
And I mean that with all due respect Jamie because I’ve taken the time to read your comments at times (mostly I skin them for points) and they are well thought out.
Now don’t bash me too much CSR for “bad-mouthing” 33% of the female bloggers.

Great post, jamie
Hopefully your ‘net issues are dealt with soon — it just isn’t quite the same without you. :)
So we are far from done...
We are sitting at 53 and looking for about 5 pickups. Who do you see on the chopping block in order to accomodate those additions?
My guess would be
C.J. Davis, Mackenzy Bernadeau, Kevin Payne, Richie Brockel, Andre Neblett
Coach Rivera, is a BAMF..
I think Jason Williams odd man out, before Neblett.
7 LBs is sufficient.
