Panthers 53 Man Roster Cut Down Tracker
Though we are sure to post later on the impact of specific cuts we'll use this post to track the cuts and additions throughout this key day. So far I find the cut of RB Terrell Sutton the most disturbing. This kid is good at so many aspects of the position I really thought he was a lock. I was also surprised DT Corvey Irvin was cut after getting such a long look with the first team throughout the preseason.
I have the roster at 63 60 53 right now but if you see an error let me know. Either myself or another editor will try to keep this up to date:
QB: Cam Newton, Jimmy Clausen, Derek Anderson
RB: DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Mike Goodson, Tyrell Sutton, Josh Vaughn
FB: Jerome Felton, Tony Fiammetta
WR1: Steve Smith, Armanti Edwards, Kealoha Pilares, Darvin Adams, Jamorris Warren

kinda surprised CJ wilson got cut
but he struggled against the steelers. Still can’t believe we cut sutton, especially ahead of vaughn…none of the others are shockers, although i hope burney is brought back to the ps (unc bias)

I doubt he will be cut...
at least not until a replacement is picked up
CB
Nathan Vasher cut by Detroit. Almost sure he will be coming to Carolina with his history with BAMF.
We have to put in a claim on Brandon Tate
I’m not sure where you find the roster spot, but he’s too talented to pass on

I hope we bring in Vasher as well. He used to be a good CB so hopefully he can fix his ailments.
He had nearly 500 yards as a rookie. Cut him some slack.

I'm still hoping he'll click
We should definitely get rid of E. Brown and Mac B. They both suck ass consistently.
Neither has Steve Smith. Let’s cut him too.

That isn’t a great comparison to be honest. Smith is a proven vet. LaFell is a second year guy who needs to prove he can be a #2 WR, and so far has done little to prove anything other than he isn’t able to or willing to be a starting WR. We don’t need another Dwayne Jarrett on the team.
Proud Member of Cat Scratch Reader and coiner of the (minus Bowers) meme
And we’re getting this from camp and preseason, as opposed to his actual work in the season, where he piled up 500 yards and a couple touchdowns, two things Jarret never did.
by SlayerGhaleon on Sep 3, 2011 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions
We don't need another Jarrett...
But that’s an unfair comparison.
Jarrett Career stats: 4 seasons, 35 receptions, 428 yards, 1 TD, Long 30 yards
Lafell Career stats: 1 season, 38 receptions, 468 yards, 1 TD, Long 44 yards
Not even close to the same guy, and you’re evaluations during preseason games are nowhere near as in depth as the coaches’ evaluations seeing him day in and day out. He only has 2 receptions this preseason, so I understand the frustration. He also is tied for 2nd in receiving yards with AE behind only Greg Olsen.
Not a lot of catches, but they were big.
by LuvMeSomePanthers! on Sep 3, 2011 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Perhaps I worded my post incorrectly. What I mean is I don’t want LaFell to start behaving as Jarrett did with an attitude of apathy and boredom towards playing ball. I certainly hope he turns continues to improve this season, but he has given me pause this preseason.

i would cut vaughn because i think he would stick on the PS, in case of injury
so youd still have him, but open up a roster spot

Geoff Hangartner,Max Jean-Gilles,Joselio Hanson,Perrish Cox,Brandon Meriweather,Tommie Harris,Igor Olshansky,Ogemdi Nwagbuo,Travis Ivey,Brandon Tate,Mardy Gilyard
Also can someone tell me why Richie Brockel and CJ Davis is still on the team??
Coach Rivera, is a BAMF..
I think that we should definitely claim Robert Callaway from the Lions.

Early week speculation……now official. Bills have cut “Piggy” I know this coaching staff may not know him but Hurney sure does. This team needs big time help at RG. Go get him Marty. Matter of fact go get him and Jean-Giles who was cut by Cincy, that would fix out O-Line problems

Basically a waiver claim means the player’s current contract keeps going, just a new team pays it.
You cannot reject a waiver claim other than retirement
If I was in the front office....
Sign Sheppard and Joselio Hanson. Start Sheppard with Gamble, move Munnerlyn back to the nickel and have Hanson as the dime. Then have Robert McClain as a 5th CB
Put Hogan on the PUP, stash RJ Stanford on the PS
Sounds great
I wonder if it is possible considering the cap and all of our other needs. We’ll need one starting 3-tech. DT and a rotational guy at least.

Deeper cuts than just getting to 53
Remember guys, we know the team is looking for at least 1 if not 2 DT’s, 1 or 2 CB’s and are always looking for other upgrades. Just because we think some of the fringe guys are safe doesnt mean anything. they may cut to somewhere between 48 – 50 players to have room for waiver and FA pickups
Possibly...
They’ll probably go to 51 or 52, but have in mind who they’ll cut in the event they sign a few others
Glad to hear it worked out for him in the end
It would have been really messed up if he had been cut.
Can't disagree
But it would have been tough to make our LBing corp. Sounds like things worked out just right for him.
Still at least 9 unknown cuts

Release Mac Bern, E. Brown, Chevis Jackson

I don't think so.
Once you make those “other” cuts the team will be at 53. To add seven more players they would have to cut another 7 to 46.
Unless McDermott thinks he can roll back the clock on Sheppard, I say stick a fork in him, he's done
He was absolutely horrible in coverage and run support for the Viks last year.
I want the best for the Panthers but
IMHO Armanti may already be as good a route runner as Tate is and Armanti still has major growth potential.

I'm not an App State or Armanti fan...
I just see a potential future “Steve Smith” quality player in Armanti.
That
is kinda my point they are almost the same guy, except Armanti can pass, tate is the better return guy. So IMHO, if we got Tate AE would be the odd man out at reciever.
60, Greco hasn't been cut yet.
its an easy cutdown… Greg Smith, Brockel, Greco, J Williams, C. Jackson, W. Wright, C. Martin.. puts us down to 53, with both Vaughn, Fiammetta, and Felton
You're right
From there I’d probably cut Clowney for Tate, work our whatever I’m doing with Fi (IR or cut) and bring in Olshansky, try to get Stanford on the PS and get a better CB
From chatting with Pats fans
Brandon T is a horrible route runner, only good in special teams. If he couldn’t succeed with the Pats, what makes people think he will do better here? Not being negative.
Because the Pats are an elite team
Tate may not be good enough to stick with an Elite team like the Pats or Packers, but for sure he is good enought to help us. He’s better that the # 4 or 5 WR we keep no matter who that turns out to be
by Panther Pride on Sep 3, 2011 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions
I disagree with that notion
Teams with elite QBs tend to run WR corps full of JAGs. All they need to do is run routes properly and the QB will be able to throw them open. Because of the dependency of the position, its one of the absolute worst positions to look at on a team with a good QB and good offensive scheme.
Patriot fans loved him not too long ago..they turn on people quickly to cope with the turn over that is patriots land. Tate for such a horrible route runner avg 18 yards a catch last year. Kid has talent he just isn’t 5’4 and white. So pats cant use him

Because despite those deficiencies he still had over 400 yards receiving and averaged 25.8 yards per kick return last year.
Teams like the Pats who have an embarrassment of riches at WR so they get to cut guys over their route running, we are beggars at this point and can’t afford to be choosers.

I still think Ajirotutu; he's 24 y/o has two years of training in the Panther's offense
And his stats are equal to Gage’s and Avery missed all of last year with an injury. Ajirotutu is available off the waiver wire. Also they say WR’s make the most improvement in their 2nd year.
Saints cut Cecil Newton
The Saints have cut Cam Newton’s brother Cecil, who was a center.

My Panthers blinders are as thick as ever...
I didn’t know Cam had a brother. lol
Newton for '11 ROY!
Walker for '11 ROY!
Biyombo for '11 DPOY!
Can we move Cecil from center to Guard
That would be cool blocking for his brother.

Awwww Yeah panthers nation!!!
Cam Newton is gonna put the panthers on the map![ atleast the natl spotlight] Avery would be a great pick up!!
This has been a public service announcement.......
I think as far as our CB position goes..
I think we should pick up Hanson, and Perrish Cox but keep him on a short leash.

Are we cutting guys so that they have can have more opportunity on another team?
Just checking in now. Pretty shocked about Sutton. I wonder if they’re letting him go as a favor to him… so he can go to a team thin at RB, instead of being 4th or 5th string.
STEVE SMITH!
Damn Auburn only had 3 picks in the Draft..and they just squeezed out a win over Utah St after getting the ball back on a onside kick….Newton casting a big shadow

Cuts Per Rteve Reed
WR Wallace Wright, FB Tony Fiammetta, S michael Greco, TE Greg Smith, RB Josh Vaughan, CB Chevis Jackson and WR Charly Martin.
well to be honest Fiametta never really did anything to prove his worth in the NFL
but between the draft pick and his hype coming out of college I figured they’d give him more time. But I definitely understand the move.
Rules and Regulations of the Game: 89, Bottom Line
he always has been underwhelming and honestly i think it he hurt our running game last year. Felton looked good gave staff confidence to cut bait

Moving onward and upward.
Standing still is getting passed. Felton is a big improvement, both at blocking and short yardage, as he showed Thursday, with 2 FDs.
felton is a upgrade
He’s gonna be useful to us if we utilise him

On Fi...
Statistically the run game never really suffered with him in vs. Hoover, the problem is he was an offensive liability. Felton is probably not as good a blocker, but he is a vastly better backfield threat both running and receiving.
i was high on him when we drafted him. I guess because he was considered best FB in the class. Im glad we went different direction

How do you cut the last guard with playing time?
At least get a couple new guards in house before you cut Bern.
Better than that.
It is what it ought to be.
Right at 53 right now with some guys still who will be cut, but no announcement
Greg Smith, Richie Brocktel and Jason Williams I think will still get cut
Keiser and Browning as well

One would assume Joselio Hanson will be a big target.
Safetys here can play some CB and they are keeping five of them. So maybe 4 CBs is enough.

Time
Not a lot of time to get the new guys ready for the season
this just in: tater will not be playing guard for the panthers
he’s gonna use his one year of college eligibility for the mountaineers, they need him worse

So are we planning to carry only 3 RBs?
That’s a little scary considering our 3rd string had to start much of last year. Sutton’s a good work horse in a pinch… I don’t really get why they are going so thin at RB.
STEVE SMITH!
Isn’t the same Fox roster. Ron and staff doing thing there way. We just have to get used to there patterns and reasoning

I posted this somewhere else, but I think it bears repeating
Hopefully, our need for 5 RBs on the roster was a product of Fox’s ‘power run into a 9 man box’ coaching style. With more finesse and a passing attack that requires more than 2 defenders to cover we should see the tread on our RBs last a bit longer.
Hopefully.
Few teams carry 4 RBs.
Felton can carry the ball in a pinch too.
by jojoisthemann on Sep 3, 2011 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Is that right? I don't think so.
I bet if you look at most team’s rosters last year you’d see 4 RBs. Maybe 5 on run 1st teams.

look for vaughn to stick on the PS

Tate was only ever injured his rookie year
and it was a result of the knee injury he suffered in college his senior year.

More cuts surely on the way
With the list of FA’s out there you know there will be more cuts. If I were any of the following I would still be nervous
Brockel (4th TE)
C.J. Davis ( thus far unimpressive backup C/G )
Thomas Keiser ( 5th DE )
Mackenzie A.K.A. “turnstile” Bernadeau ( G )
Jason Williams ( 7th LB )
David Clowney ( 5th or 6th WR )
Kevin Payne ( 5th Safety )
joepearson
Panthers kept 5 RBs incl 2 fullbacks — Richie Brockel and Rashawn Jackson. Brockel also can play TE. Fiammetta missed 3 wks w/ concussion.

#47 Brockel started Thursday night, and was pancaking Defenders as a lead blocker -- looked great.
They pulled him for 3rd and 1 and gave the ball to Felton, who got the 1st down.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
Roster Moves
Browning will go to practice squad. Still believe Brown or Norwood get cut. MacBern get’s cut when we bring in a better guard. Brockel or Felton will be cut. Vaughn makes practice squad for running back depth. Jason Williams will get cut. One if not two of our wide receivers will be replaced. With the moves made here that will open up 5 roster spots to adress needs- 2 DT, 1 CB maybe 2 1 OL. Maybe one additional cut will be made to one of the roster players to adress on more need. This is IMO.

Surprise players to make the roster: DE Thomas Keiser, FB Richie Brockel, OL Bryant Browning, LB Jason Williams and DB Kevin Payne.

Not 100% on this but,
I’m pretty sure Duke Robinson was cut earlier this week. Also some updates I haven’t seen anyone else mention is that as of right now we only have three DT’s. McClain, Fua, & Neblett. Nick Hayden, Corvey Irvin, Deljuan Robinson & all others were cut. Can’t say I blame them on Hayden, the guy was a 3rd round bust we let stick around for way to long. Robinson is a lazy fat ass & I’m glad he’s gone too. (You think he would’ve gotten the picture after sitting out all year last year.) I hope we can pick up Avery or Tate, simply put Pilares on IR for this season. He needs time to develop anyway. Then we could still keep Clowney or Edwards or whoever is on the bottom of the totem this week. Bring in Hanson & Vasher at CB. Vasher or Tate can be the return man we need & let Armanti & Munnerlyn focus on there primary positions. I don’t really care who we get at DT as long as there young and big. We don’t need any more 15yr veteran signings who may not even play a snap this year. Nothing against Ron Edwards he’s just the latest in a long line since Kris Jenkins left. No Pat Williams & No Tommie Harris please. They’re done IMO. Go Panthers!!
"For a man dat don't go heels you run yur mouth pretty reckless don't ya."
"No need to go heels to get the bulge on a wretch like you."
Hayden was a 5th round pick
I think you meant Cory Irvin as the 3rd round bust. Vasher is done, the Panthers already have 5’9 -5’10 corner. Need someone who is 5’11 or 6’0 or over tall at corner.
Is an inch or two that significant?
If the guy has some hops I don’t it really matters.
Personally I could care less
Unless they can cover with consistency in which Nathan V hasn’t done in a while u have stats to prove. Not many teams don’t continue cutting solid each and every season.
