Panthers 53 Man Roster Cut Down Tracker

Though we are sure to post later on the impact of specific cuts we'll use this post to track the cuts and additions throughout this key day. So far I find the cut of RB Terrell Sutton the most disturbing. This kid is good at so many aspects of the position I really thought he was a lock. I was also surprised DT Corvey Irvin was cut after getting such a long look with the first team throughout the preseason.

I have the roster at 63 60 53 right now but if you see an error let me know. Either myself or another editor will try to keep this up to date:

kinda surprised CJ wilson got cut

but he struggled against the steelers. Still can’t believe we cut sutton, especially ahead of vaughn…none of the others are shockers, although i hope burney is brought back to the ps (unc bias)

Neither has Steve Smith. Let’s cut him too.

by SlayerGhaleon on Sep 3, 2011 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

That isn’t a great comparison to be honest. Smith is a proven vet. LaFell is a second year guy who needs to prove he can be a #2 WR, and so far has done little to prove anything other than he isn’t able to or willing to be a starting WR. We don’t need another Dwayne Jarrett on the team.

And we’re getting this from camp and preseason, as opposed to his actual work in the season, where he piled up 500 yards and a couple touchdowns, two things Jarret never did.

by SlayerGhaleon on Sep 3, 2011 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

That is a fair point. I’m willing to give him another try this season to see if he will turn things around. But the preseason he has had has left me feeling less than enthused.

Proud Member of Cat Scratch Reader and coiner of the (minus Bowers) meme

by Ivan459 on Sep 3, 2011 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

We don't need another Jarrett...

But that’s an unfair comparison.

Jarrett Career stats: 4 seasons, 35 receptions, 428 yards, 1 TD, Long 30 yards
Lafell Career stats: 1 season, 38 receptions, 468 yards, 1 TD, Long 44 yards

Not even close to the same guy, and you’re evaluations during preseason games are nowhere near as in depth as the coaches’ evaluations seeing him day in and day out. He only has 2 receptions this preseason, so I understand the frustration. He also is tied for 2nd in receiving yards with AE behind only Greg Olsen.

Not a lot of catches, but they were big.

by LuvMeSomePanthers! on Sep 3, 2011 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps I worded my post incorrectly. What I mean is I don’t want LaFell to start behaving as Jarrett did with an attitude of apathy and boredom towards playing ball. I certainly hope he turns continues to improve this season, but he has given me pause this preseason.

so youd still have him, but open up a roster spot

Basically a waiver claim means the player’s current contract keeps going, just a new team pays it.

You cannot reject a waiver claim other than retirement

Sign Sheppard and Joselio Hanson. Start Sheppard with Gamble, move Munnerlyn back to the nickel and have Hanson as the dime. Then have Robert McClain as a 5th CB

Deeper cuts than just getting to 53

Remember guys, we know the team is looking for at least 1 if not 2 DT’s, 1 or 2 CB’s and are always looking for other upgrades. Just because we think some of the fringe guys are safe doesnt mean anything. they may cut to somewhere between 48 – 50 players to have room for waiver and FA pickups

From chatting with Pats fans

Brandon T is a horrible route runner, only good in special teams. If he couldn’t succeed with the Pats, what makes people think he will do better here? Not being negative.

by adam carter on Sep 3, 2011 6:29 PM EDT reply actions

Because the Pats are an elite team

Tate may not be good enough to stick with an Elite team like the Pats or Packers, but for sure he is good enought to help us. He’s better that the # 4 or 5 WR we keep no matter who that turns out to be

by Panther Pride on Sep 3, 2011 6:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

It does not hurt to give him a look. If he does not fit in release him no harm no foul!

by Smokewagon on Sep 3, 2011 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree with that notion

Teams with elite QBs tend to run WR corps full of JAGs. All they need to do is run routes properly and the QB will be able to throw them open. Because of the dependency of the position, its one of the absolute worst positions to look at on a team with a good QB and good offensive scheme.

by ppalm on Sep 3, 2011 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Patriot fans loved him not too long ago..they turn on people quickly to cope with the turn over that is patriots land. Tate for such a horrible route runner avg 18 yards a catch last year. Kid has talent he just isn’t 5’4 and white. So pats cant use him

I posted this somewhere else, but I think it bears repeating

Hopefully, our need for 5 RBs on the roster was a product of Fox’s ‘power run into a 9 man box’ coaching style. With more finesse and a passing attack that requires more than 2 defenders to cover we should see the tread on our RBs last a bit longer.
Hopefully.

With the list of FA’s out there you know there will be more cuts. If I were any of the following I would still be nervous

Brockel (4th TE)
C.J. Davis ( thus far unimpressive backup C/G )
Thomas Keiser ( 5th DE )
Mackenzie A.K.A. “turnstile” Bernadeau ( G )
Jason Williams ( 7th LB )
David Clowney ( 5th or 6th WR )
Kevin Payne ( 5th Safety )

Panthers kept 5 RBs incl 2 fullbacks — Richie Brockel and Rashawn Jackson. Brockel also can play TE. Fiammetta missed 3 wks w/ concussion.

He’s been playing every game at FB this preseason

Ron Rivera seems to like guys who can play multiple positions. Brockel is that kinda guy. Back up FB and TE if needed

#47 Brockel started Thursday night, and was pancaking Defenders as a lead blocker -- looked great.

They pulled him for 3rd and 1 and gave the ball to Felton, who got the 1st down.

So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.

Roster Moves

Browning will go to practice squad. Still believe Brown or Norwood get cut. MacBern get’s cut when we bring in a better guard. Brockel or Felton will be cut. Vaughn makes practice squad for running back depth. Jason Williams will get cut. One if not two of our wide receivers will be replaced. With the moves made here that will open up 5 roster spots to adress needs- 2 DT, 1 CB maybe 2 1 OL. Maybe one additional cut will be made to one of the roster players to adress on more need. This is IMO.

Not 100% on this but,

I’m pretty sure Duke Robinson was cut earlier this week. Also some updates I haven’t seen anyone else mention is that as of right now we only have three DT’s. McClain, Fua, & Neblett. Nick Hayden, Corvey Irvin, Deljuan Robinson & all others were cut. Can’t say I blame them on Hayden, the guy was a 3rd round bust we let stick around for way to long. Robinson is a lazy fat ass & I’m glad he’s gone too. (You think he would’ve gotten the picture after sitting out all year last year.) I hope we can pick up Avery or Tate, simply put Pilares on IR for this season. He needs time to develop anyway. Then we could still keep Clowney or Edwards or whoever is on the bottom of the totem this week. Bring in Hanson & Vasher at CB. Vasher or Tate can be the return man we need & let Armanti & Munnerlyn focus on there primary positions. I don’t really care who we get at DT as long as there young and big. We don’t need any more 15yr veteran signings who may not even play a snap this year. Nothing against Ron Edwards he’s just the latest in a long line since Kris Jenkins left. No Pat Williams & No Tommie Harris please. They’re done IMO. Go Panthers!!

Hayden was a 5th round pick

I think you meant Cory Irvin as the 3rd round bust. Vasher is done, the Panthers already have 5’9 -5’10 corner. Need someone who is 5’11 or 6’0 or over tall at corner.

Is an inch or two that significant?

If the guy has some hops I don’t it really matters.

by ambull01 on Sep 3, 2011 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally I could care less

Unless they can cover with consistency in which Nathan V hasn’t done in a while u have stats to prove. Not many teams don’t continue cutting solid each and every season.

Count

I think the roster totals 54 not 53
