So yeah... I hope there's a plan: Panthers cut three DTs
Shockingly the Carolina Panthers have just cut three defensive tackles, Nick Hayden, Corvey Irvin and Deljuan Robinson while keeping only Terrell McClain, Sione Fua and Andre Neblett. There's no surprise the Panthers were looking to make serious moves to bolster the position, but shocking they would cut as many at the weakest position on the field. The silver lining is that this means the Panthers will likely look to bring in at least two DTs from cuts today.
In recent days the organization has been linked to Pat Williams formerly of the Minnesota Vikings, however, due to his involvement in the Starcaps case he will be forced to miss the first two weeks of the season due to suspension. In addition to Williams there are several valuable players who are likely to be cut today as Hurney plays his cards close to his chest.
Most surprising of the cuts is former 3rd round pick Corvey Irvin who the team were starting during the preseason next to Fua, however it looks like the team feel about the under tackles much the same way I do as both Hayden and Irvin filled that role.
It looks like it's going to be a busy day today in Charlotte.

It's obvious what we have (or had) at DT wasn't working
I like Neblett. Fua and McClain are rookies so I’m happy with the cuts and agree with keeping those 3. I hope Hurney works some magic at finding some solid talent to bring in.

I'm so excited about the possiblities
I don’t remember feeling this anxious about potential signings. We have so many glaring holes this season.
They would be nice
The Panthers version of Charlotte’s construction cones. I used to live in Charlotte and there were construction cones everywhere.
LOL
So they’re still littered throughout the city? I haven’t been in Charlotte for about 5 years now. I really liked the city. Really clean and safe (except for the bus terminal).
Trey Lewis and Pat Williams
both will be panthers by EOD today. And possibly Alex brown of the Saints

Hey Panthers Fans you could pick up Robert Callaway Detroit just cut
He is a beast in the middle and if not for the Lions having Suh.. Fairly… C. Williams…Sammie Lee Hill… and Andre Fullen. Robert Callaway would not only make the team but would be a likely starter…. 330 pounds and can move… trust me if you pick him up h ewouuld be your BEST DT he is really good
I'm sure he'll get a look, Hurney should be looking at every DT cut today.

Another Possibility @ DT
Marcus Harrison just cut by the Bears…6’5 about 320 I believe….any interest there?
Does anyone have a list of top DT/CB cuts around the league?
It would be nice to have a pool of players to compare to one another.

From here in Philly;
CB Joselio Hansen was cut and is very familiar with McDermotts defense.
At DT the Eagles cut ex-Panther Derek Landri who had a pretty good training camp and preseason.
Re: Pat Williams, and his 2-game suspension...
If I read this correctly (from SBNation, on “NFL Roster Cuts”), he wouldn’t count against the 53-man roster:
http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2011/9/2/2401512/nfl-roster-cuts-2011
“In addition to the seven roster cuts, the Vikings get a bit of a brief roster reprieve for two games as Kevin Williams serves his two game suspension for the StarCaps case. For those two games Williams will not count against the 53-man roster. That buys the Vikings some time if they are still not positive about the status of one or two players. They can give them additional practice and possible game time to decide if a cut is in order.”
If that holds true for KWilliams, it should for a team picking up PWilliams, shouldn’t it? If so, I’d go for him. Then, 2 games later, use him to replace the most under-performing DT.

Good info, bigd. Now it's just a matter of how much money PW is willing to sign for. I think he's got another good year left.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
With 3 DTs cut early in the day, Panthers are announcing they'll go get some available players out there.
I like the facts that they’re not standing pat with the likes of Nick Hayden, who never showed anything but effort.
If we can land a true run-stopper in the middle, our entire Defense becomes more solid, end to end, and front to back.
I was really hoping that Irvin would ste up...
I saw him make a couple nice plays during the preseason… but if you can’t hold the point of attack and you get pushed into the 2nd level with regularity… that just doesn’t do much to secure your spot on the team.
If all of us here could see that DT was a glaring problem, the coaching staff could see the same thing. This is a good sign that the staff is trying to adjust personnel to address one of our biggest problem areas.

I think Pat Williams is a last resort
The Panthers need to find two starting-caliber DTs who can play week one. I like the three guys we’re keeping but none of them are ready yet. Pat Williams would be a good option if he wasn’t suspended. I don’t know about any of you but I cannot stomach the thought of Beanie Wells running all over us like every other back we’ve faced. We need help at DT NOW, not in two weeks!
by StockP317 on Sep 3, 2011 11:21 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Problem is...
Starting caliber DT’s usually don’t get cut.
It honestly wouldn't take much to upgrade what we have.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
That's probably true
But starting caliber for the NFL and starting caliber for us are two different things right now.
Of course.
A starting calibre DT in this league should be able to stand his ground and occasionally collapse the pocket (unless his name is Kemo).
At the moment our guys can’t do either. If we can bring in a guy that can simply hold his ground it’d improve the team tremendously.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
It's good to see that Rivera has identified the problem and is trying to address it.
The DTs have been atrocious this year.
Hopefully someone useful gets cut today or teams are going to run all over us this season.

plus it sends a bit of a message for next year

Steve Reed:
Breaking: The Panthers have cut CB Kendric Burney from UNC, but are interested in bringing him back on the practice squad.

These cuts are great news!
Last year when we sucked during the preseason, we made no major roster changes, and then sucked in the regular season. Honestly our D-line can’t get any worse… I applaud the effort!
STEVE SMITH!
finally nick hayden is gone

Help me out here, guys --
I’m under the impression, from reading posts here, that we, as the last place team from last year, have what amounts to first dibs on any and all waived players, with no limits on the number.
My friends tell me that can’t be true, only with our first choice.
I assume the new CBA made this clear. Is my assumption valid? If it is, we can cherry pick a lot of good castoffs, can’t we?
I'm pretty sure that is correct.
Steve Reed agrees:
Steve Reed
The Panthers have first dibs on players who have been waived.
Rules and Regulations of the Game: 89, Bottom Line
Players that have less than four years of experience are "waived" — meaning a player has to clear the NFL waiver wire before becoming a free agent. When a player is placed on waivers, the other 31 teams have a day to place a claim on him and his contract. The team with the highest spot in the waiver order is then awarded that player. If no team makes a claim, that player is then a free agent and can sign with any team.
The Panthers have the first position in the waiver order.
Players with more than four years experience are considered vested veterans, so at least through midseason, they are not subject to the waiver process. As soon as his release paperwork clears, he is free to sign with another team.
That’s why you’ll see vested veterans released first by most teams, then the guys not vested, then the guys eligible for the practice squad.
Thanks, guys, for the feedback.
Like the theme from Rawhide, from years back:
“head ’em up, move ’em out.”
Per Rotoworld:
Colts released DT Tommie Harris.
Harris flashed in the third preseason game, recording a sack and a pass defensed against Green Bay. A 90-game starter with the Bears over seven years, Harris may be a candidate to reunite with former coordinator Ron Rivera in Carolina.
Newton's First Law of Motion: In the absence of fear, I move over, around, or through and continue doing so indefinitely, that is, 'til I gets my 6.
May also be represented as : [1+89(34*28]/BAMF^2=TD
MAKE THE MOVE!!
Tommie Harris, would bring a strong vet presence, and I think he still has some gas left in the tank. GET EM!!
That would be correct, sir. Our advantage would be the Rivera connection.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
Well we need to get busy pitching the woo
Chang a lang chang a lang.
I hope someone gets that reference, lol.
As the great philosopher Yoda said "Try not! Do you must!"
The Plan according to me...
When the cuts are done, Hurney/RivEra start work picking waivers clean and wooing the vets. They are certainly holding a list of players they think could be waived/cut, ranked by talent, value, need, etc.
I hope it’s a long one.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
I served that one up on a platter, wondering how long it would take, lol. Just under an hour; gdhood wins 10 internets.
So much to be done, and so few people willing to do it for me.
Tommie Harris on a 3 year deal and Jamall Williams on a 1 year deal theres our veteran presence untill the rookies are ready
Harris at best should be sign to a 1 or 2 year deal
with incentives, he isn’t the player he once was. Theirs a reason he was cut by both the Bears and Colts. Jamal W on a 1 year vet minimum deal would be nice.
