I'm calling it now... Steve Smith will break the Panthers all-time receiving record this week

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

I was debating if I needed to dodge this for fear of jinx, but I laugh in the face of such superstitions! This weekend Steve Smith will surpass Muhsin Muhammad as the Carolina Panthers all time leading receiver. It was something that got lost in the shuffle a little bit with Cam Newton's emergence, but we need to make sure this momentous achievement for Smitty doesn't ignored.

Smith is now sitting at 9,233 yards, just 22 yards shy of Muhammad's mark. Smith is already the Panthers' leading TD scorer with 54 touchdowns, and following Sunday's game he'll have the yards. The only remaining receiving record for him to get is total receptions, which he needs another 60 receptions to beat Moose's 696 number.

It couldn't be more fitting in a year where Smitty has been rejuvenated by an open offense and a strong armed rookie QB to have him capture the record now, it's just a shame he won't do it at home.

After the jump and look at Smitty's career stats

I thought he’d get it against JAX, but the torrential down-pour put a damper on things (awful pun unquestionably intended).

It will be interesting to see if he can get 60 catches in the next 13 games to get the receptions record. I think he will, as that’s only 4.62 receptions per game.

Interesting that he had like 20 yards last week yet he’s still 3rd in the league in receiving yards.

Would it be alright if I shed a tear after he breaks it?

I am assuming so.

Do NOT say

“breaks it” around Steve Smith!

Ya I just traded to get Smitty

I hope he and Cam set tons of records together. I think he will have a good week against a suspect secondary. Olsen gets a big game this week too.

It's gonn be an awesome time when he breaks the record

The only downside is that he will get it in Chicago and the anouncers will probably barely even mention it. But for Carolina, this is a very big deal.

I did some quick math and if he keeps up the pace he’s had so far he will finish the season with around 85 receptions for 1840 yards and 10 or 11 TDs
That would be truly an awesome season. Not quite enough for the triple crown but should lead the league receptions and yardage.

He is far more likely to lead the league in yardage than he is receptions. With the short-passing game acting as the running game for many teams, receptions are on the rise. The league leader in receptions now usually has around 115. He won’t get there because of our down-field approach, but yardage is very much a possibility. TDs would be nice, too.

Such an awesome accoplishment.

If he does indeed break it this Sunday, I will definitely shed a quite tear for this man. He’s embodied everything the Panthers have stood for and is the heart and soul of this team. He deserves it!!!

I thought you meant he will have the record for most yards in a single game this weekend.

Since you aren’t saying that, I am gonna predict it. Smith beats his own record of most yards in a single game. Here is the coincidence, not only does he hold the current record, but he got it where? At Chicago.
Here’s hoping he & Cam light the windy city up this sunday.

interceptions are bad

but i’d be okay to see Peppers intercept a screen or something, and CAM lays him out.

by usana_gaines on Sep 27, 2011 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

I would rather not unless

Peppers fumbles the ball when Newton lays him out then Newton picks it up and runs it for a first down. Other than that, I rather he doesn’t throw any int. The perfect scenerio would be for Peppers to rush in and Newton slams him to the ground and completes to Smith for 75 yards & a td.

especially if the camera catches peppers face

Rather see 89 break the record at home vs NO

This game should be about Olsen getting multiple TDs, C Johnson getting multiple sacs (Peppers zero), Williams and Stewart rushing for 100+ and a couple TDs.
