Gamble and Godfrey Cleared to Play Against Bears
We've got good news on the injury front. CB Chris Gamble and SS Charles Godfrey have been officially cleared to play this Sunday at Chicago:
After losing starting linebackers and team captains Jon Beason and Thomas Davis the first two weeks of the season, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said starting safety Charles Godfrey and cornerback Chris Gamble have been cleared to practice Wednesday following concussions.

We are going to need them both
I love the way Gamble has played so far this season. He has already shut down Larry Fitzgerald and Greg Jennings, as well as helped on Mike Thomas (before the concussion). We are going to be able to man him up against anyone on Chicago’s roster (likely Johnny Knox), so we can set it and forget it on that side of the field.
I think we may still see Pugh get some PT. If Rivera feels like he can switch out Godfrey and Pugh without a performance dropoff, we may see both get adequate play time to keep the others legs fresh. Pugh sure did not look good at the nickel, but he looks really good at his natural safety position. Beside, Darius Butler and now RJ Stanford both look like capable nickle guys, especially against the poor Chicago WR core.

I've got a question.
Do my fellow CSR readers think that the coaching has our players over achieving or is it the pkayers are talented and they are developing faster than expected. I ask because in the preseason the general consensus was the CB and DT positions were gonna be bad and it couldn’t be fixed without the draft next year, but both have come along nicely. At least, that is my opinion.

I think it's a matter of the secondary finally getting used to the scheme.
They had no OTA’s, and little training camp to learn a completely new defense. They’re just now understanding the nuances of McDermott’s scheme, and I think that’s why we’ve seen the improvement over the last 2 weeks.

I may not always be right, but even a blind nut finds a squirrel every once in a while.
Rivera seems to pride himself on making "something out of nothing."
He has mentioned a few times this year that there were no “superstars” on that Chargers defense, yet they were the best in the league (yards allowed per game). McDermott & Rivera have a decent chance to do it again this year with our guys.

The End Of Training Camp Pickups Of Butler & Thomas Much Improved The Overall CB Talent
Unless Chris Gamble has slowed with age, all the Panthers 6 CB’s now run a sub 4.44-40, and have good athleticism.
4.32-40 Darius Butler
4.41 -40 Captain Munnerlyn
4.43-40 Josh Thomas
4.43-40 Brandon Hogan (on the PUP list)
4.44-40 R. J. Sanford
I believe your correct about them getting better in the secondary the more comfortable they become in the defensive system, get coached up, and reduce the number of big pass plays.

Here lemme add something for ya Jaxon:
I’m very glad to have these guys back though I should give more credit to their back-ups who filled in admirably. HC Ron Rivera had praise for both S Jordan Pugh and CB RJ Stanford. We are building some quality depth in the secondary Panther fans (as long as Pugh plays as a safety, not a CB)!
There we go.

yea this is great! Before the season started it seemed like we had holes to fill everywhere but now with our guys stepping up, im not so sure. Our DLINE has been great the last 2 weeks and have did a great job stopping the run. Our DEs are amazing, secondary is solid.
Our oline is doing solid also giving Cam enough time to pass. TE ofcourse is solid, with Gettis back next year and Lafell steppping up, we are good at WR. we are set at QB and RB.
next year we might have the luxury of just taking BPA in the draft.

Great job stopping the run?
Did you watch the games? The DEs have have good but the DTs have been out of position too often and teams are able to run right through us. I think they’ll (the DTs) will progress as the season goes on but they are not doing a great job stopping the run so far.
Great Point "ambull", Only 5 DT Tackles In The First 2 Games, But 5 DT Tackles In Game 3
128 rushing yards on 34 carries, 3.8 PC in week #3. With 3 sort of big run plays of 21, 24, and 39 yards, that’s 84 yards on only 3 run plays. Checkout my “Panthers Defense – Inside The Numbers Week 3”, and see all but around 1of the DT’s, DE’s, and LB’s average around 3 yard gains or less on their tackles. Against the Packers the Panthers defense allowed 127 yards rushing, around 5.9 YPC, with Starks arond 9 YPC. In week 1 against the Cardinals the defense allowed 99 rushing yards, with Well goin 18 for 90, a 5.0 YPC

Glad to have both of them back!
We’ll need them against the Bears passing attack. In the end I have a great feeling heading into the Chicago game. I think we can make it 2-2 guys!!!

i.e.
Rivera against his old team, Olsen against his old team, Panthers vets at Peppers. It seems like we’ve got everything to gain while the Bears are playing not to loose.

I have never been more confident
heading into a tough game like this. We have so many things to play for. I think we pull this one out.

Just heard Rivera on Sirius
Said they still have to be cleared today. Are you sure this information is accurate?
We need Godfrey
Godfrey would never have let Thomas in the endzone at the end of the first half like Martin did. We need his hard hits to put the fear in those receivers. Martin might be a solid safety but Godfrey would have laid Thomas out, not just bounced off of him.
