How do the QBs look through the new passer rating after week three?

Stay connected for news and updates

As you may know I'm not referring to ESPN's new metric here, but rather a method for evaluating QBs a friend a mine developed which is heavily reliant on yards per attempt (YPA), touchdown percentage and interceptions percentage. This basically gives us a rating not of a quarterback, but purely as a passer- how good are they at finding open receivers, how often do they throw valuable touchdowns and how often do they throw costly interceptions? What we've seen through two weeks is that it proves itself to be a much more reliable metric than the traditional QB rating (which would tell you Cam Newton is 18th in the NFL) or ESPN's total QBR (which would tell you Newton is worse than Alex Smith). Without further ado, the week three rankings:

Rank Name Team Rating
1 Aaron Rodgers Green Bay 12.00
2 Tom Brady New England 11.67
3 Matthew Stafford Detroit 10.89
4 Eli Manning NY Giants 10.71
5 Drew Brees New Orleans 10.51

More after the jump

Rank Name Team Rating
6 Matt Schaub Houston 10.10
7 Ryan Fitzpatrick Buffalo 9.81
8 Tony Romo Dallas 9.65
9 Joe Flacco Baltimore 9.47
10 Matt Hasselbeck Tennessee 9.38
11 Kevin Kolb Arizona 9.07
12 Mark Sanchez NY Jets 8.41
13 Cam Newton Carolina 8.24
14 Michael Vick Philadelphia 8.14
15 Jason Campbell Oakland 8.13
16 Jay Cutler Chicago 8.04
17 Rex Grossman Washington 7.94
18 Chad Henne Miami 7.90
19 Ben Roethlisberger Pittsburgh 7.85
20  Alex Smith San Francisco 7.29
21 Matt Ryan Atlanta 6.92
22 Colt McCoy Cleveland 6.78
23 Andy Dalton Cincinnati 6.75
24 Sam Bradford St. Louis 6.67
25 Kyle Orton Denver 6.65
26 Philip Rivers San Diego 6.45
27 Donovan McNabb Minnesota 6.38
28 Kerry Collins Indianapolis 5.27
29 Taravis Jackson Seattle 5.19
30 Josh Freeman Tampa Bay 5.09
31 Matt Cassel Kansas City 3.34

Omitted due to one game played: Blaine Gabbert, Jacksonville- 6.64

We found it interesting that Cam Newton rated not only higher than all 2011 rookie QBs, but all 2010 sophomore QBs too. He also ranks 2nd in the NFC South, and 7th in the NFC.
