First Panther Victory of 2011 Doesn't Move the Needle
It has been a strange season indeed Panther fans. Every Panther fan I talked to last week didn't feel panic at 0-2, wasn't souring on this team and in fact felt the same sense of relief knowing that we had made a wise decision with the #1 overall. Sure nobody expected Cam Newton to continue his torrid passing pace but we felt relief knowing that he could pass for 400 yards if needed. So certainly after getting the first win of 2011 and improving the record to 1-2 we would feel even better right?
Well....not so much.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not down on the team or Cam Newton for that matter. How could I be after a win? I'm still feeling good about this team and the direction they are moving. But that was one ugly victory that didn't exactly instill a lot of confidence. Which leads me to another revelation.
This team and Cam Newton in particular, at least so far, seem to embody the classic 'Cardiac Cat' persona. We have had three exciting games and I already get the feeling that when the game is on the line this team has a chance. So though I don't feel any better about this team after a really ugly victory I can't wait for the next nail bitter. So if you are hoping for one of those 2nd quarter blow outs where we coast through the 2nd half...it's not happening. At least not any time soon with the Bears, Saints and Falcons up next.
So strap yourself in tight Panther fans because we have 13 more nail biters games to go, all in classic Cardiac Cat fashion I am sure.

These nail biters are a killer.....
….hopefully this team will only employ the cardiac cats mentality when necessary, and not embody it every game.
...
Dude tell me about it. i know this is football and nailbiters come with the territory, but games like last sunday are exhausting and stressful. I got in panic mode when Rivera didnt call that 50 yd field goal, Mare could have nailed that. Anyway, neither here nor there we still got the win nonetheless.
im not worried at all, the rain really put a damper on things. Im very impressed how our defense has been playing the last 2 weeks. I really do think we get the win against the Bears and im not just saying that as a homer.
Atrocious o line, a non clutch QB that folds under pressure and spends more time on the ground then a hooker’s knees in Vegas, on again/off again running game.
Then the intangibles.. Ron Rivera lookimg to prove himself a winner as a coach to his former team, payback for peppers and soilder field isnt exactly intimaditing as it use to be. bottom line, we win by a field goal and be 2-2 next week.

Had to see my Dr....seriously,
my blood pressure was getting way too high from watching Cam in the 1st 2 weeks. She said, body sees excitement same way it sees danger, & experiencing both multiple times within the space of 2-3 hours is why people die of heart attacks during/after sports. We took some measures to deal with my body’s response, but the alternative (not watching) after 35+ years, would be even worse. I’m practicing a lot of deep breathing during games & loving every minute.
Oh, and I think we WILL start having some of those 1st half blowouts, but I don’t think that’ll slow us down. From the way Coach Rivera talks, he won’t settle for less than the best for 60min.

What's weird is, this was the Cam most expected game one.
My concern now, is not that he had a bad game. But rather that he had many horrible throws without anyone even pressuring him. I just hope he’s not one of those guys who you never know what extreme to expect week to week.

Good teams don't always win pretty
If we want to call ourselves a good team, then we need to come away with a ‘W’ in these kinds of games. All teams get them. The Steelers didn’t so much beat the Colts last night… they merely survived – and I feel kind of similar about the Panthers yesterday. That being said, I was happy to see how passionate the players looked to be on defense. Some signs of life – even from our rookie DTs.
Every team wants to get better each week. It’s a whole lot easier to do that if you can come away with victories – no matter how you get ’em.

Excellent, just what I need for my health...
My cautions hope for a nice Clemson season and the absolute choke-job by the Braves in the wild card race have me stressed enough already without a return of the Cardiac Cats…ugh. Win however you can, though.
"There is something in these hills that you and I can't define and others can't understand. A wave of warmth always surges through me when 'outsiders' say, 'I don't know what it is about you Clemson people, but your undying love for Clemson is admired by everyone I know.'"
relooking the schedule
its hard to see more than 7 wins without being a bit too optimistic. any predictions now of 8 wins or more would involve faith that we are going to beat a few playoff caliber teams the rest of the way

This team is unpredictable enough...
We could pull of some upsets. And the great thing is this offense is still in it’s infancy. It doesn’t know how great it can be yet. The defense showed some improvement even with two of our top guys on the IR. Anderson, the Williams’ un-brothers, CJ, Hardy; many of these guys as well as some unnamed are looking better.
I couldn’t really predict how many games we’ll win. I just know this Panther team is a completely different monster than seasons past. They are capable of great things. It’s exciting! We’ll just see how it comes together!

This game didn't reveal anything....
other than the fact that Cam can lead his team back from a slight deficit. It was, no doubt, an encouraging sign, but the weather stole a sizable amount of reality away from the game as a whole. For the most part, you don’t see games under inclement conditions to that degree very often. The point, yard, and stat totals would have been higher(not necessarily better) under normal field conditions and this would have given us a better opportunity to assess the team’s(especially Cam) progress. Let’s hope this week’s game against the Bears is played under more ideal weather conditions so that we can more easily gauge how well this team(Cam) is developing.
....
Yea i am not worried at all about Cam after yesterday’s performance. Other than Jstew and the one good Olsen TD, the offense as a whole played like dog crap. Cam was inaccurate, the times he was accurate receivers dropped the passes and it was a hot mess on the offensive side. D carried this team yesterday.
Believe it or not Im glad cam played the way he did today. Yes that sounds crazy, but think about it. If Cam passed for 400-500 yds again, that spotlight would have got brighter and brighter and he would have ridicoulos expectations. I think the bubble would have busted and Cam wouod have had crashed and have a meltdown day and who knows what would have happened.
Cam’s vanilla performance yesterday wad just what he needed. He played very boring yet alright football, had no disasters and won the game. Now the media this week can cool off with the Cam love, and give Cam a mental break from the Christ like comparisons he has got the last 2 weeks and he can get his focus back.

this is a good point
He can’t logically keep raising the bar. Better the bubble burst sooner than later.
And better that it bursts during a win
Glad that it wasn’t a situation where he goes in over confident against a team he should beat and lose.
I think coach has all of the players heads in the right place and that this type of thing shouldn’t happen, but I think the picks last week and the competition from a team we very easily could have dominated are good reality checks and learning experiences for all of our young players.
It was more concerning that he was inaccurate for no reason
Often no pressure, plenty of time, and he still misses his target so bad they could barely get a finger on the ball. Very few NFL QBs can pass for 400 yards. But very few if them can also drop back, step into their throw and still completely miss targets.
What’s up with that???

Cam was throwing high during warm ups as well. Hopefully, just a bad day at the office.

Might have been due to that walking boot he wore during the week.
Maybe it restricted his normal stride into the throws.
Anyway, he corrected it when it counted most, on the winning drive.
Had the fault persisted throughout the game, it would be more concerning.
not just the Panthers
On Sunday I think I heard 7 of the 8 early games were a TD or less. Whether they are track meets, low scoring slug fests or something in between, it does seem that most teams play up or down to the competition.
