Three in the books: How is Cam Newton looking after his third start?

The NFL is a league of comparisons- Brady or Manning, Marino or Montana... the list goes on. Fans of football as a whole are always looking for talking points to evaluate one player against another, or try and determine what a player's future will look like. In many ways I think doing a three week comparison of Cam Newton is a fool's pursuit; the season is still young, and especially after yesterday's game it's hard to imagine an evaluation this early would hold any water (pun very much intended).

Nevertheless, I feel it's prudent to compare Cam Newton's first three starts to three different QBs on different parts of the spectrum- Jimmy Clausen who started 10 games as a rookie for the Panthers in 2010, Peyton Manning who started a full season as a rookie, and whose rookie passing record Newton is currently on pace to best, and finally Sam Bradford, the last #1 overall QB pick.

After the jump we'll look at the three week stats for these QBs. I don't intend to draw any major conclusions from these stats, I just present them as a talking point.

Star-divide

Jimmy Clausen, Carolina Panthers- 2010

First three starts (0-3): Cincinnati, New Orleans, Chicago (Combined 2010 W/L: 26-22)

36/76 (47.2%), 395 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT----- QB Rating: 58.0

Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts- 1998

First three starts (0-3): Miami, New England, NT Jets (Combined 1998 W/L: 31-17)

62/114 (54.3%), 683 yards, 2 TD, 8 INT---- QB Rating: 50.0

Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams- 2010

First three starts (1-2): Arizona, Oakland, Washington (Combined 2010 W/L: 19-29)

69/117 (58.8%), 655 yards, 4 TD, 5 INT---- QB Rating: 72.6

Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers- 2011

First three starts (1-2): Arizona, Green Bay, Jacksonville (Combined 2011 W/L: 5-4)

70/117 (59.8%), 1,012 yards, 4 TD, 4 INT---- QB Rating: 85.1

I'll leave any conclusions to you, but thus far through three games he's looked supremely impressive overall.

Sure, some detractors will say that we’re 1-2 instead of 3-0 and we should have taken a DT since this season is a losing season anyway, but we made the right choice in taking Newton. He’s far and away better than any QB we’ve had, even with his flaws.

I was one of the few saying draft Dareus. I wasn’t sold on Newton. Also, by my way of thinking, next years QB crop will be deeper in talent.

The most serious question I had with Cam was that even if successful, would he be happy to stay in Charlotte or would he want to move to a big market team (you know…icon, entertainer). I have come to believe from his actions in Carolina that he is much more mature and grounded than what was displayed prior to coming here. Maybe it was skewed media coverage or maybe he has actually in fact matured.

Whatever the case, I agree that Cam has certainly made his case well that he was the right choice.

To me, this season is more about building a team........

and developing Cam Newton than it is winning games. We are trying to win every game, but the bigger picture is the development of Cam and the rest of our young players. I think we will be active in free agency again next year and we will probably look much different.

I’m stoked about the future of our young, franchise quarterback.

Josh McDaniel Is Ruining Another Franchise By Filling The Rams Roster With Slow WR's

Mike Sims-Walker is the Rams only fast WR, but his field speed isn’t as fast as his 4.35-40 would make you think.

He’s designed to Rams offense to catter to Bradford’s strengths, short range accuracy, without good deep threats. Bradford is overrated, and is more like Chad Pennington than Payton Manning. As the secondaries addapt to Bradford’s lack of a strong arm to force them to play back to cover heis deep throws, he will be chalanged more on this mid and short range throws.

Bradford has a strong enough arm.

I'm a big fan of stats, but they don't always tell the story. Bradford has a good

accurate arm with a quick release and consistent mechanics. He passes the eyeball test readily to me.

I think some of it is instinct....i don't think Bradford is very instinctive when it comes to throwing down field...

but not alot of young qbs are right away…. then again some of that has to do with his personnel as stated above…

I will say this about Newton…. he really hasn’t done anything any different that who he was oin college… in college he threw down the field (regardless of how simple his reads may have been)… it is something he is more incline to do… It really is a tendancy he has continued into the pros… along with pocket presense ..which i believe makes him more advanced as a passer. You can’t be a good passer if you are scared of the rush and looking at the rush instead of feeling it…which is Newtons pattern (feeling the rush not lookign at it)… to me alot of the surprizes that people have about him is funny… because honestly if you objectively look at what he did at Auburn you will find he is basiclly doing what he did step for step from Auburn…… even if you take away all the designed rush attempts you will find he really hasn’t looked to take off that much…. another pattern from college… at least that is what i have seen

by Shankdiddy on Sep 26, 2011 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

He's only been in a new system for three weeks man

I’m sure he’ll be fine once they get settled. They went from the Walsh WCO to an under-center variant with McDaniels. His reluctance to throw down the field last year was primarily system-based, and we will likely see him open things up after week six.

How does Cam look after three games? He looks like the future. and i feel like we’re in good hands. He has blown away my expectations and we have a win (ugly as it may be i couldnt care less). Our team has a swagger back, fan conifidence is improving, despite some idiots at half time in the jags game. Rivera is just awesome….. honest, up front and demands a lot from his players. Irsay Now Says Manning Is Out For The Year & With Clausen's Having A Better QB Rating In His First 3 Starts, Maybe It's Time To Re-Visit My Suggestion That The Panthers Trade Clausen To The Colts

I made the suggestion around a month ago, before the Colts signed Kerry Collins.

Clausen could be some insurance against the Colts losing the Andrew Luck Lottery.

Clausen is probably the cheapest QB they can find with any starting potential, because his salary this year is only the 2nd year minimum.

Any draft pick the Panthers might get in such a trade for Clausen would help offset any draft pick the Panthers might trade to the Seahawks for OLB Aaron Curry.

by PanthersRoar on Sep 26, 2011 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't believe there are 10 people on this site,

that think any team would trade anything for Clausen. Teams can pick up any vet not playing for minimum and play as well as Clausen. I am not saying Clausen sucks but he has not shown anything to make any trade worthwhile to any team. & No team is playing this season planning on getting the first pick in the draft.

by MrBernz on Sep 26, 2011 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I;m Not Saying That Clausen Is A Great Option, Just Cheaper, Almost Any Veteran QB Will Cost Around Twice As Much

The retired/washed up Kerry Collins cost $4 million for 2011, and the Colts can’t afford much more than the minimum salary to add another QB (even if over the salary cap a team can sign a player to a minimum contract). Clausen’s salary is only $405,000, while the minimum for any veteran QB with around 6 or 7 years of service is around $1 million.

by PanthersRoar on Sep 26, 2011 12:29 PM EDT up reply actions

That is very true MrBernz

But Mel Kiper Jr. would have Irsay trade us a 3rd rounder for Jimmy, and I bet he’d cover Jimmy’s salary for the Colts to boot. Kiper has been on Jimmy’s sack for a looooong time and doesn’t seem to want off. If there was any person in this universe looking to support a “Start Jimmy” cult its Kiper.

"I kinda just sling it" -Jake

by bleed_in_blue on Sep 26, 2011 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

That's because Kiper can't admit when he was wrong.

Pickles never really clicked (and it isn’t just on him, I admit that — but he had a very significant role in that as well, and I won’t absolve him of the lions’ share of responsibility on that front), but Kiper couldn’t backpedal on Jimmy after his debacle with the scouting and all. There’s a reason Jimmy (who I think was touted as the most NFL-ready in the 2010 draft) was passed on in the first round, after all. But Kiper won’t back away from saying how great Clausen is going to be and admit that he’s wrong.

by NX75649 on Sep 26, 2011 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you there Bernz...

it isn’t Jimmy’s fault… he may not be a special player but he could be decent. However he hasn’t really had a chance to develop any trade value… i mean you can literally name 20 to25 back up signal callers that would be rated higher than JC at the moment… sadly its the truth

Too bad we are 2 months away from playing the Colts.

Hope they don’t find a QB who can lead them, in the meantime.

Before the season began, and Manning went down, I’d counted that game as a loss. Now I look forward to it as a win.

Is he still out of work? The colts would be foolish to go after Pickles rather than DG if he’s available. I think they would have looked to him over collins if he’d been available when they picked up collins.

by Floods on Sep 26, 2011 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Cam still needs to improve...

…especially on his reads, progressions, and decision-making. But I think the same could probably be said of all the rookie QBs compared above. For him to be 300+ yards (an entire game’s worth of passing yardage for most QBs!) above all those guys is pretty significant at this point in his rookie campaign. The TD-INT ratio is pretty notable, too…especially for a QB everyone expected to have “accuracy” problems and to struggle adjusting to NFL speed. His completion percentage is far and away better than anyone thought it would be. And, he’s faced at least two high-caliber defenses (Green Bay and Jacksonville) in compiling those numbers. Even Arizona tried to blitz the crap out of him to force him to errant throws. But he just stayed poised and burned them instead.

So, Cam’s a winner. And I think we all knew that even before he was drafted (due to the national championships). The only question was whether all of that was a by-product of the lesser competition he faced in college (which is debatable since the SEC is like a junior-NFL these days) and the schemes his coaches used to maximize his inborn talent (i.e., the spread offense)…or, if it was because Cam just has an inner drive to win, doing whatever it takes to do so (whether on the field or in pre-game preparation, practice, and workouts). At this point, I think we can all say it’s the latter.

The kid can obviously play at the NFL level. He’ll have growing pains like any other rookie QB. But, he seems to “get” it. And, he seems to have “it.” That’s the difference between a true franchise QB and someone you use as a stop-gap QB until you can find one. There’s also a lot to be said for Cam’s charisma. His attitude is infectious. He doesn’t back down from big games or big situations. That’s why he’s so poised as a rookie on a team trying to improve itself. He doesn’t have a “deer in the headlights” bone in his entire body. You might confuse him with a disguised coverage…or pressure him with a blitz package…but, he doesn’t rattle in the face of those things. He adapts. He prolongs plays, whether with his feet or his size in the pocket, somehow finding a way to keep the chains moving. And to win. And, even though we’re only 1-2, we were competitive in every game so far. I believe a lot more of that is due to Cam than any other single thing in the makeup of this team.

That’s a lot of weight to heap on one guy’s shoulders. But, Cam’s got some pretty big shoulders and the exact kind of mental makeup you want in a QB entrusted with that much responsibility for a team’s success. And, for him to have that as a rookie with all the doubters and haters that even now continue to question his ability, I just think it’s pretty amazing. He’s an inspirational guy to watch on the field. And he’s an inspirational guy to watch how he handles himself off the field in terms of interacting with his teammates. I don’t think anyone else could have rejuvenated Steve Smith the way this rookie QB has…and that, too, is pretty amazing in its own right.

Bottom line for me: I had my doubts. I took a wait-and-see approach when we drafted Cam…thinking it might have been better to build up the defense (to hang with our rivals in the NFC South) and look for a better QB (maybe Andrew Luck, maybe not) in the following year’s draft. In other words, a slow-and-steady approach to help Rivera’s coaching staff ease into installing their philosophy and putting their stamp on this team. But Cam (and Rivera) have completely won me over. They saw something in this guy that convinced them he’s a franchise QB. And they were right. Even more importantly, they surrounded him with the right kind of guys to develop him. I think that’s been a huge difference-maker. We’ve got a coaching staff that knows how to teach and how to game-plan and play-call to the strengths of our players.

All of that gives me (and obviously the team) tremendous hope for the future no matter how this season turns out.

But that’s just my two cents,

While I agree with you and don't think he himself should be the one whining about it

His point is valid in the league as a whole. I get the whole “he’s a running QB and defenses have to take him down” argument but not all of the hits Vick or Big Ben take are because they run. When they are still in the pocket the same rules apply to hitting them as they due to the pure “pocket passers”.

Wait until we see Cam take some shots that should draw a flag and the refs do nothing because he’s a threat to scramble.

It's only going to get better with Cam

He is going to continue to get more comfortable with trusting his receivers, TEs, and offensive line.

Next season, I hope we get him another weapon in Alshon Jeffery. In theory, by the time Smitty is ready to retire, Cam would be able to pick up right where he leaves off (as Jeffery would, theoretically, be in his 3rd or 4th year by this time). From everything I have seen of the young SC product, he is a 100% lock to come in and fit the big, fast, strong WR mold that is proving effective in the NFL today a la Megatron, Andre Johnson, V-Jax, etc.

Personally, I would rather trade a little speed for the kind of size that Jeffery brings to the table

Looking around the league, I think your best chance to win is to get a WR who can use their large frame to physically outmatch a DB. Straight line speed is great and all, but it’s not like Alshon is slow (he’s in the 4.5 range).

Ultimately, it is going to be Chud and Rivera’s call. Both having worked with larger receivers like Malcolm Floyd and Vincent Jackson… I just feel like Alshon is the right fit.

And, if we don’t go that route, I really think Brian Quick would be “the poor man’s Alshon Jefferey” being of similar body and skill.

I don’t see him as an immediate impact guy. He has boatloads of talent, but he has dominated in college on pure athleticism alone. He is simply bigger and faster than the DBs he matches against. He doesn’t have to run great routes… he’s just always open.

He was a high school basketball player, App recruited him as an athlete, and he was a full time start a year later. So there is nothing to indicate his isn’t coachable. I think a couple years of NFL polish will yield a good result. He would certainly be a mismatch as the 4th WR in his rookie year.

i have to say big talented Recievers make your quarterback lookk really good

And Jeffery excels and catching the difficult and easy balls…to me that trumps straight line speed.. Improves your red zone offence when you can use jump balls and back shoulder fades… from the 40 yard line on in those type of recievers and hugh threats and really help your offence score points… hugh match up issue at every inch of the field. Takes a man out of the box in some cases because you can afford to leave some DB’s alone for those jump ball situations… plays directly into the match ups Panthers would love…makes a direct impact on adding a spy…or add safty help for bracketing a big wideout….or help on the tight ends who CAN’T be guarded by linebackers… adding Jeffery cause a very large super size match up issue….and good luck if a team tries to match up with that by playing nickle or dime… i honestly would not want to face that prospect…oh and that pretty much ensures Smitty has one on one coverage because of the match up issue on the other side of the field…..

If you have a fast wide out the fix for that is play off and let them catch it and tackle them…. and that is good…. but just a different match up issue…. Jeffery in my mind would absolutely tilt the field and put defences in a horrible situation…..(thats if he plays to his potential…like you would wonder with any rookie)

by Shankdiddy on Sep 26, 2011 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Disagree that Blackmon is a better fit

Look at the WR Chud had starting for him in Cleveland and who he’s had in San Diego. There’s a very clear connection between them and that’s size. Jeffery is just as fast as Braylon Edwards, Vincent Jackson, and Malcom Floyd, who have all excelled under Chud, and Jeffery is more naturally talented than any of them.

Is that good offense, good defense, or a combination of both, showing a good team effort?

Was there even a single GAME we did that last year?

by bigdavis on Sep 26, 2011 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Somehow, despite injury, it is pretty clear to me the defense is getting better.

Limiting the big play is going to be the Achilles heel of the season. Yesterday we faced our toughest test on run defense, in conditions that greatly favor a strong running offense, and outside of MJDs one big play, we stuffed it pretty well.

And without any of the "exotic" defensive schemes we were promised.

They weren’t called for in this game, given the conditions. And probably because we’ve had so many injuries to the defensive starters, which limit the expectation of efficient execution that those blitzes would require.

So we’re back to vanilla coverages, with Beason, Davis, and Godfrey sidelined.

I didn’t care for the big gaps our DTs were aligned in. It makes it too easy for a RB to get to the second level quickly. Hope they change that against the Bears.

by bigdavis on Sep 26, 2011 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm glad they haven't tried to outsmart themselves on defense so far...

it’s been the smart thing to do, given a) the pressure we’ve been getting from the front 4 on passing downs (for the most part anyways) and b) McD is realizing that blitzing the hell out of a QB, no matter if its Aaron Rodgers or a rookie in his first start, is typically not a good thing to do (unless you have a Carr like QB lol). It shows good gameplanning, and learning from mistakes ie blitzing too heavily against the Cardinals.

Yeah... that achilles heel is painful to watch though

Really frustrating to watch the defense be so solid 90% of the time and then jeopardize the game with the big plays.

Did anybody else see

Byron Bell at right tackle?
That would mean an un-drafted free agent was lined up against Daryl Smith (2nd round pick) or Matt Roth (2nd round pick) all afternoon.
Impressive.

Technically we gift wrapped it and gave it to them with the KO out of bounds and the defense’s refusal to get one stop during the entire 4th quarter.

I hate the quality of competition argument

Yeah he was playing against college and not NFL defenses. But there is a flipside, his teammates were not NFL players either. No one seems to think that maybe now he has players that are up to his personal level, he is really showing what he can do.

...

if we dont make it to the playoffs this year I hope we follow the exact way the Lions have built their team through the draft.

2008 they get C Johnson, 2009 they get Stafford and 2010 they get Suh and 2011 they are 3-0. Lions are the poster boys on how to flawlessly build a team.

Oh and BTW we NEED Dre Kirkpatrick in this draft! a great, solid shutdown corner.

Are their any Suh like DTs projected for this next draft?

by NewtoniumPanthers57 on Sep 26, 2011 1:02 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

No...and there won't be for another 10 years. Suh is that good.

The best DT in next year’s class right now is Jared Crick (who played with Suh at Nebraska), and he’s a mid-first rounder at the moment.

If someone asked me if I would trade Cam for Suh straight up

I might honestly have to think about it. Then I would probably keep Cam.

But the temptation of having someone at DT who we know will be a future Hall of Famer (in only his 2nd year) is VERY tempting.

The only reason I would not make the trade, is because ultimately a QB you can count on is more valuable than any DT.

The flip side of the coin

Is that in order to draft players like Calvin Johnson, Suh, and Stafford, you have to be epically bad. That’s two #2 overall and one #1 overall pick. Which means they were one of the two worst teams in the league over the course of those 4 years. That’s not something I want for the Panthers.

by pancanbra on Sep 26, 2011 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

true, but...

they’re set for years to come. All they have to do now is stay the course. My only regret is that Suh isn’t in Brady’s division.

by Floods on Sep 26, 2011 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Good observation.

I noticed that he avoids locking in on his intended receiver, too. The first 2 games, he even looked off the safety more than once, allowing those deep passes to succeed.

Small things like those, that rookies aren’t expected to master so quickly, are aiding his progress greatly. Add those to his work ethic, his velocity and touch, and his innate will to win, and he’ll be hard to defense, once his accuracy issues are fixed.

IMO

First game great. Second game outstanding. Third game a little shaky but I blame that on the weather

by rscott94 on Sep 26, 2011 3:08 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I'd agree with all but placing the blame on the weather

I give Cam credit for coming back and winning it in the end, but he was shaky long before the rain started and to take the blame off of him is making an excuse.

If any ‘excuse’ applies it’s that he is a rookie and he will have games where he is off long after he’s a rookie, it happens to them all.

by MindMachine on Sep 26, 2011 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

not every game is liner...there are ups and downs...not to would a should a could a but...

When it did start to rain it did put a damper (pun intended) on any dynamic pass plays to a degree. But NFL qbs have to get use to that type of stuff. He did very good to me

I find it very amusing that Payton Manning had 8 int in his first 3 games… in the first two games he has a pick 6 in both…and 137 yards passing. At this stage Newton is far more advanced. … That is if your ONLY looking at those 3 game context.

by Shankdiddy on Sep 26, 2011 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you... I think Cam did ok this past Sunday...

He showed his rookie side for the first time, but no INT’s is good enough for me.

I just think sometimes we fans try to make excuses for lack of production and honestly saying Cam’s game was off due to the weather isn’t completely accurate.

Yes it did throw the game plan off for the last three quarters of the game, but he was having an off day either way. No big deal, it happens and we won so….

by MindMachine on Sep 27, 2011 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

Honestly...

Any QB would have accuracy issues in those conditions.

As an aside: No, he didn’t play awesome, but he was the best QB on the field and he came through when it counted.

Oh, okay.

Yeah you could tell he was a bit too jacked or something. Balls sailing a little.

And thats fine... it's all a good learning experience for him...

It didn’t end up costing us the game and from what I have heard so far Cam is picking through film with a fine tooth comb. You know he’s going to watch those throws on tape and cringe which will only make him better.
