Panthers Defense Week 3 - Inside The Numbers

At last, the Panthers win, and the defense plays well (except for a back to back 39 yard run and 36 yards TD pass to end the 1st half, during the monsoon)! The Panthers defense held the Jaguars to only 13 first downs, and 257 total yards (129 passing and 128 rushing), in their 16 - 10 come from behind win. The Jaguars fumbled the ball 4 times, but recovered all 4 times, and they did have an int. The Defense kept MJD from running wild, with 24 carries for 122 yards, and a long run of 39 yards, but he did also have 3 catches for 45 yards, with a long of 24 yards. Jaguars rookie QB Blaine Gabbert finished his first NFL start going 12 of 21, for 139 yards, with 1 TD, and 1 Int. The Jags top receiver was Mike Thomas, 4 catches for 55 yards, and their lone TD of 36 yards. The Panthers narrowly lost the time of possession battle by 1 minute, 29:34 to 30:26, and penalties were about even, Panthers 8 for 69 yards, and Jags 8 for 60 yards. Good numbers for the Panthers defense all around.

I thought I would keep track of the Panthers defensive numbers this week (tackles, assist, sacks, ints., and passes defended, so here follow me inside the numbers (from NFL.com).

Solo Tackles - Assisted Tackles - Possition - Name - Each Credited Plays Yardage

8 - 1 - SLB - James Anderson - (though his official numbers are 8-1, by checking his individual plays it's 5-4), 6 yard pass (Lewis) assisted, 2 yard run (MJD), 4 yard run (MJD), 5 yard run (MJD) assisted, -1 yard run (MJD) assisted, -2 yard fumble (Gabbert), 1 yard run (MJD) assisted, 14 yard pass (Deji Karim), 2 yard run (MJD), and 1 pass defended (Thomas).

1 - 0 - NT - Ronald Fields - 2 yard run (MJD).

1 - 0 - DE - George Selvie - 4 yard run (MJD).

1 - 0 - Special Teams - Richie Brockel - 0 yard punt return tackle.

0 - 1 - DT - Andre Neblett - 2 yard run (MJD) assisted.

0 - 0 - CB - Chris Gamble - no tackles, but 2 passes defended, before he was injured near the end of the 1st half.

I certainly hope that tackle stats match up better than this against most play stats. Thes stats of course do nothing to show missed tackles, and if DB's are making tackles of 21 and 39 yards down field, then someone has missed a couple of tackle up field. Of course yards allowed per tackle doesn't mean much, because you don't know if tackles were missed, how do you count assisted tackles (same as solo tackles for these numbers), etc., but the following are some interesting average numbers against runs.

 -2.0 yards - DE - Charles Johnson - 3 plays for -6 yards.

+0.5 yards - DE - Eric Norwood - 2 plays for 1 yard.

+1.0 yards - DE -Greg Hardy - 6plays for 6 yards

+1.0 yards - DT -Terrell MCClain - 3 plays for 3 yards.

+1.3 yards - MLB Dan Connor - 6 plays for 8 yards.

+1.6 yards - SLB - James Anderson - 7 plays for 11 yards.

+2.0 yards - NT -Ronald Fields - 1 play for 2 yards.

+2.0 yards - DT - Andre Neblett - 1 play for 2 yards.

+2.4 yards - WLB - Jason Williams - 7 plays for 17 yards.

+3.0 yards - LB - Thomas Williams - 1 play for 3 yards.

+4.0 yards - DE - George Selvie - 1 play for 4 yards.

The Jags averaged 3.8 yards per carry against the Panthers. The Panthers allowed Gabbert a 6.62 YPA, and the receivers averaged 11.6 YPC.
