Can Cam Newton Break More Records?

In just two weeks, Cam has already broken one major NFL record for rookie quarterbacks. In week two, he tied another record for back-to-back 400 yard games. Now, in just the third week, he is yet again in position to break another. This time it is an NFL record for all quarterbacks for three back-to-back 400 yard games.

This got me thinking... Can he break any of the other records?

Other records he could potentially tie/break:

Most passing yards, rookie, season: 3,739, Peyton Manning, 1998 (234 yards per game avg)

Most passing yards, game 554, Norm Van Brocklin, Sept. 28, 1951

Most passing yards, season 5,084, Dan Marino, 1984 (318 yards per game average)

Most games 400+ yards passing season 4, Dan Marino, 1984

Star-divide

Most games, 300+ yards passing, season 10, Rich Gannon 2002, Drew Brees 2008

Most consecutive 300+ yards passing games 6, Steve Young 1998, Kurt Warner 2000, Rich Gannon 2002

• Most games, 200+ yards passing, season 16, Dan Fouts 1981, Drew Brees 2008

• Most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback, season: 12, Steve Grogan 1976

• 1000+ yards rushing by a quarterback in a single seasonMichael Vick, 2006

• 500 yards passing in a game:  11 names

I know these are not the only records that he could potentially break, but these seemed to be the most obvious.

Lou Holtz Hit The Nail On The Head This Morning While Discribing LSU's Win Over West Virginia On "College Gameday Final"

Lou Holtz – “I don’t care how many passing yards a team has (West Virginia’s QB Smith had around 480 yards passing against LSU, but were blownout), if a team can’t run the football, they can’t score TD’s inside the 20, and will have to settle for FG’s, or not score most of the time”.

by PanthersRoar on Sep 25, 2011 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions

True, the Panthers have proved this as well

but hopefully that stops this weekend. If we fix the red zone problem, I still think we can win without much of a running game until opposing defenses game plan against our passing game. THEN, we run like hell.

Are you the same PanthersRoar that used to post on the Panther’s AOL boards back in the mid 90s? (showing my age now, lol)

by Panthster on Sep 25, 2011 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I voted 1 or 2

I believe it’s likely he will break the 400 yd games in a row record this weekend as well as Manning’s rookie passing record. There is a chance he can break a couple of the other records but chances are Defenses will eventually find a way to contain him.

by Kris Mynatt on Sep 23, 2011 11:21 PM EDT reply actions

it will get done

i think CAM goes over 400 again. If we can’t stop the run, we won’t have a safe lead where we can run most of the time. And so far, our run game sucks anyway. I also think CAM throws for over 4,000 yards this year. He needs to average 225 yards passing a game the rest of the season to hit 4000, and 296 to get to 5000.

But here’s one to think about…

Does Smitty break the record for single-season receiving yards? 1848 by Jerry Rice. Smitty is on pace for 2672 yards.

by usana_gaines on Sep 24, 2011 12:27 AM EDT reply actions

I could see Smitty

breaking those, I think opposing defenses will have a tough time with Carolina this year guarding Smith, Shock, Olsen, and the run.

Cam will break 2 of the following.

most passing yards, rookie season
most games 400+ passing yards
most rushing TDs
1000 yards rushing.

I also think he’ll fall just barely short of Marino’s record for most passing yards and that Brady will set a new record leaving Cam in 3rd.

by Floods on Sep 24, 2011 4:18 AM EDT reply actions

won't get 1000 rushing

He’s currently averaging 36 yards a game. He’s gonna have some big games running the ball, but I see him around 600 yards or so, but close to 10 TDs. it will be the best running season ever for a rookie QB.

by usana_gaines on Sep 24, 2011 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

He's got 3 easy

Most 400+ yard games, he’s already got 2
Most passing yards as a rookie QB, he’ll average 225 easy for the rest of the season
and a 500 yard game, face it, 432 against the Pack, this will be walk in the park

Wow after seeing the records he could put up, we’ve really got something special here.

not like it matters. That bastard Tom Brady will just come out a few hours later anyway and break Cam’s record.

no kidding

Are there any games this year where we play after Brady finishes? I’m tired of that hippy stealing our thunder.

Even without wins the records give fans hope.

Every record he breaks means he is doing his part for the team. If he is breaking records, & losing, it means it is some1 else not doing their part, & thats who we should be looking to replace in the draft.

Records are nice to have but I think Cam is only concerned about his team's W-L record

Last I checked, playoff spots or wins were not awarded for record setting performances. They are just nice bonuses. I have more hope in Carolina than I have in a long time so Cam bringing a strong game each week gives me hope.

Because I cant justify paying for a replica jersey, knock off or not. If replica, via ebay or another outlet? aka please share as I’m trying to find a cheap way to get NBA/NHL/NFL jerseys(for myself).

Cam seems like a Beautiful Passer

He looks great in the pocket and his mechanics are looking better almost snap to snap he is learning so fast. I keep hearing when defenses figure him out but how do you defend a pocket passer. I just need some clarification on what defenses can figure out because Brady, Brees, Manning and Rodgers when did defenses figure out how to stop those passers. I understand he’s not that far along yet but my point is the same.

Fun Fantasy Football Factoid:

In 2010, in 13 appearances and 10 starts, rookie Jimmy Clausen scored 50 fantasy points.
In 2011, in 2 starts, rookie Cam Newton has scored 55 fantasy points.

How about the record for most Superbowl wins as a starting QB

As a member of the Panthers…I don’t gaive a damn about individual records. I’m interested in Team NFL records…And from what he has said, those are the most important to him as well…

Very excited about his rookie season

He’s pretty much sealed ROY imo. These record-breaking performance may not mean nothing w/o the W’s for some, but I think his performance despite the team’s overall performance goes a long way… players will want to play for him, and Cam will make them look good while breaking these records.. he’s making Lafell look like a legitimate starter and Smitty look like the perennial pro-bowler like he once was… players will want to play with this guy.

Record breaking is good and all........

but would rather see our team be more balanced and be able to run the ball. This will be especially beneficial when you have a lead and to help retain TOP. I would love to get more national recognition and respect for our QB holding some passing records (truly I believed if we broke any records it would have been with rushing not passing) but as long as we are getting wins I am happy either way.

by Mr Bojangles on Sep 25, 2011 2:48 AM EDT reply actions

id rather win games

I’d rather him pass for 250-275 yards with no int. either way, its exciting to see him take over this team. he has that special quality that makes you a star quarterback in the NFL. Its funny to see so many fans hop on the cam train. A lot of you were pissed when we picked him number 1 overall and now your eating your words.

seriously the raiders have to be the worst team in the NFL. Im not talking about stats or wins. Im just referring to their god awful ugly azz jersies, no name QB situation, AWFUl at grooming new QBs, a fanbase made up of criminals. Seriously how can you be a raiders fan?

They have the BEST helmets and uniforms in the league…During the 80’s, when I was growing up, the Raiders were scary… I just wish the Zombie formerly known as Al Davis was in a home somewhere… Don’t get me wrong, I am a hard-core Panther man, and have been since ’96, but I still have a soft spot for the silver and black…

I am starting the hell out of Cam Newton on my fantasy teams today.

Four teams with Cam, plus Greg Olsen (in place of the injured/overrated Antonio Gates) on those four teams.
I’m hoping 1 and 88 tear it up today against Jacksonville.
I also need some points out of DeAngelo. #daggumit

Poor Jimmy...seriously.

He’s handled himself with so much maturity this offseason and season. I honestly don’t know if he could make a respectable starting QB, but I’d like for him to be traded and have the chance somewhere. I mean, he’d be an upgrade for Seattle.
