Happy Friday Panthers fans!
Each week I begin thinking about the week's beer pick around mid week. I start to think of this week's theme, talk with some connoisseur friends of mine and get their opinions. Making the final decision is always a hard part of my Friday where I narrow down the field... it's like American Idol with less drama and WAY more Clay Aiken.
As soon as I heard that Blaine Gabbert would be starting this week the decision became very simple. We don't often get to see two 1st round rookie QBs play each other this early in the season, so I had to pick a brew that represented both players and this game as a whole.
The brew...after the jump
Double Dog- Double Pale Ale
The brewery: Started in Aspen, CO then moving the Denver, CO and finally their operation today out of Frederick, MD the folks at Flying Dog are a littler bit different in their approach to beer. Their approach to their ales, stouts and ambers is never being too serious, and always having a sense of humor. Ultimately, this leads they to brew excellent, uncompromising beers in a variety of styles.
The brew: This is a big one folks. A true American Double IPA (or Imperial IPA if you prefer the term) the Double Dog is a thick, sweet, syrupy IPA with just the right amount of hop bitterness. I need to warn you though, this thing will pack an absolute wallop at 11.5% ABV, and it doesn't even feel like it's that high gravity. Before you know it you've had 3-4 and by then you've missed the second half of the game.
How it relates to the game: In this instance our 'Double Dogs' are Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert as they fight on Sunday. Moreover though this game figures to be an absolute dog fight in the trenches with Maruice Jones-Drew and Jonathan Stewart pounding the opposing defensive lines.
Where to buy: Some grocery stores carry this brew, but you're more likely going to need to head to a specialty store.
Price point: Because of the overtly high alcohol content this is only sold in singles or 4-packs, and typically ranges from $8-$10.
