Wednesday injury report roundup for Panthers and Jaguars
Yesterday we saw the first injury report for the week come out, and for Carolina (thankfully) it's pretty bare. With Thomas Davis hitting IR the Panthers can't afford any more injuries, so here's what we're looking at
| Name | Position | Injury | Wed. | Thurs. | Fri. | Game Status |
| Godfrey, Charles | S | Head | DNP | - | - | - |
| Newton, Cam | QB | Ankle | Full | - | - | - |
Excellent to know that Newton's boot was only a minor precaution, but it was scary to hear nonetheless. Godfrey is slightly more concerning because it means two things: First, that Carolina would be starting Jordan Pugh at FS this week, which based on his performance thus far in 2011 is disconcerting, but also because we lose yet another captain. Lost in the shuffle of the injury news is that the Panthers could potentially be without all three defensive captains this week with Beason and Davis on IR, and Godfrey in doubt.
If there's one area the Panthers are lacking right now on defense it's organization and identification. They need someone to take the reigns and from where I sit, James Anderson needs to become that player.
We'll look at the Jaguars' injury report after the jump
| Name | Position | Injury | Wed. | Thurs. | Fri. | Game Status |
| Alualu, Tyson | DT | Knee | Limited | - | - | - |
| Hill, Jason | WR | Hip | Limited | - | - | - |
| Lewis, Marcedes | TE | Calf | Limited | - | - | - |
| Kampmann, Aaron | DE | Knee | DNP | - | - | - |
| Osgood, Kassim | WR | Hamstring | DNP | - | - | - |
We already know that Kampmann will miss the game, which should take some of the pressure off the offensive line. Other than that, most of the key players should be ready by Sunday.

Anderson, CJ, Cappy...
Need to take on a leadership role, whether they like it or not. Gamble should be the leader of the secondary, but that’s not really his style.
I’m not particularly concerned with Newton being on the list.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
My biggest concern is the defense
I have a feeling this could be a shoot out if MJD is able to run all over us. Let’s hope that the guys filling in step up and become difference makers.
You get what you put in and people get what they deserve.

I wouldn't expect us to be able to slow down MJD straight up.
But hopefully we can get a couple scores early, and entice them to abandon the run, then put the game in the hands of their unproven rookie QB. Of course that is pretty much every NFL teams gameplan every week, and its contingent upon building a quick lead. With our offense, I think we can execute that plan…wouldn’t have thought I’d be saying that this time last year.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
I'm not so sure I trust our defense to even be part of the gameplan.
I think getting an early lead is the only way to influence their offense.

I don't think they're going to dominate, no, but they have to play their part.
Mainly by taking away the running game and putting all the pressure on Gabbert. If he turns out to be a competent QB then we’re probably in trouble.

Yeah I agree with that.
Your first order of business is to contain MJD.
And yes, if we do that but Gabbert starts to gash us—its a race to 40.

Too bad we don’t have Jarrett anymore…he’s pretty good at getting to a 40.

At first I thought this was Oldy's comment.
Then I laughed at it, instead of feeling morose, (which prompted me to double-check the username).

I'm just hoping he rushes for so many yards in the first half...
…he’s too gassed to do much in the 2nd. :-D
I don't think MJD will rush all over us.
I think we’ll be able to stack up against him knowing that Gabbert is starting.

The Jets stacked the box on us cause they knew McCown wasnt throwing and he still ran all over them..
If McCown could literally complete a frigen pass mojo would have had at lease 130 against a real good Jets defense. Ive been impressed with mojo so far, he wants the ball and is running hard. If Blaine can complete some passes and move the chains, mojo will definitely get over 100, plus dumpoffs from Gabbert.
I'm expecting 150-175 in total yards from MJD...
…although I’m not happy about that expectation.
it would be nice if lewis misses the game
Take away a weapon for gabbert but we’ll see. I expect us to stack the box and make gabbert play. Hopefully he won’t shine like cam

Yeah, I don’t believe that he’s as cool a customer when the pass rush is in his face. Hopefully he’ll fold like a tent against our capable 4-man rush.

Two man rush - so far Fua and McClain haven't done a great deal.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Semantics.
I’ll still take Hardy and CJ vs. the remaining 3 OL.
My point was: we got a fair amount of pressure on Rodgers whilst rushing four.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
It's not semantics at all. If either Fua or McClain could push the pocket our pass rush would be twice as good.
As it is our two DEs have to provide all the pressure, which is quite easy to negate if you leave extra blockers in. An interior pass rush is much more difficult to scheme against.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
All I’m saying is: we were able to get pressure with just four last week. Who, What, Where, When and Why is secondary.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
But I like your point about the interior rush…Not only is is difficult to scheme against, its also much more difficult for a QB to escape pressure from the inside.
Plus, if you do commit extra blockers…sometimes its a running back. And there aren’t many who can even slow down a good DT.
"We're no strangers to love. You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment's what I'm thinking of. You wouldn't get this from any other guy. I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling. Gotta make you understand."
Why is D-Con
never mentioned in the same breath as Def Captain? Shouldn’t he be encouraged to step it up as he will(most likely) be our starter in the middle of the front for the rest of the year?
Good point.
But I think he still has a bit to earn.

I expect ALOT of dink and dunks, throw aways and a few sacks with Gabbert. His pre season numbers were even worse than Cams (i know, but then Cam came out and showed up in regular season)
But Gabbert’s completion % during the pre season was slightly under 39% and frankly they dont have any star WR or TE.

Where are you getting your numbers?
Gabbert completed 50% of his passes during the preseason, not “slightly under 39%”.
His pre season numbers were even worse than Cams
0.6 worse in QB rating, he threw for 65 more yards, 0.1 less YPA, same number of TDs

Personally...
…I think this is a potential “trap” game for the Panthers. Everyone expects them to win. Even they probably expect to win. But, there are a lot of things that could go Jacksonville’s way if the Panthers don’t bring their A-game. Notably, the Jaguars have the 7th best defense in the league right now…and they’re 5th against the run. So, the odds of Deangelo or Stewart creating a more “balanced” attack by runing the ball probably won’t happen. And, if the Jacksonville stymies us with their defense while we pound our collective heads into that brick wall, it’s possible we won’t be able to establish an early lead.
Couple that with Gabbert taking over for McCown and being incented to play his best game ever to cement a starting role for the Jags…along with MJD potentially running wild through our “barely adequate” DTs and injury-decimated LB’ing corps…and you start to see a recipe for a Jacksonville win taking shape. A lot of it will depend on how much they “max protect” to give Gabbert time to find the open man. And, against our secondary, he’ll mostly likely have open guys to throw it to. And, a lot of it will depend on how well Jacksonville can control the time of possession battle by keeping it on the ground with MJD. If they can do those things, they just might keep our 2nd-ranked offense on the sidelines long enough…and often enough…to eke out a victory.
So, our coaching staff better make sure they implement a wise game plan against these guys. Don’t let our players assume it’s an easy victory. Prepare them really well. Incent those DTs and LBs to play strong in the middle. And the pass rush better bring some heat so Gabbert can’t get into a rhythm with his receivers. I expect this game to be won by our defense this time around, especially if they can create some turnovers by picking off Gabbert. And, if they man up enough to consistently contain and stop the Jags (i.e., no giving up big plays), we should have enough offensive firepower to outpace them to a win on our homefield.
But that’s just my two cents,
—Neil
I also expect...
…the Jags to use MJD in a lot of screen passes and short dump offs as a safety valve for Gabbert. That means our LBs are going to have to play tight coverage on the little dynamo or we could be in for a long day.
Couldn't agree more...
It’s pretty startling how many are willing to write off a 1-1 team when we’re 0-2.
Take MJD out of the equation (because he scares me immensely and you summed it up perfectly) and the Jags have the 5th ranked defense in the NFL. This is not a ‘gimme’.
Here's my theory...
People want us to win badly — and keep saying that we will — because subconsciously they don’t want to see that Gabbert is a good NFL QB, so they keep telling themselves that we’re going to win this game, that it’s a gimme win, and that we’re so much better than Jacksonville because they’re scared of that little “what if” in the back of their head that says ‘what if Gabbert is actually better than Cam?’.

Honestly, Gabbert could pass for 1,000 yards. As long as we win—its all good.

I know we've had an inordinate...
amount of injuries and injuries are something that every team deals with, but, regarding the Jaguars or any other opposing team, I would rather beat them with all of their number one stud players. In other words, I don’t cheer for the other teams starters to miss a game against the Panthers to increase our odds to win.
Because there is a chance that anything...
could happen on any given Sunday in the NFL, It would be a shame if Gabbert outplayed Newton by the numbers while simultaneously picking up his first win against the Panthers. We can only hope that the Panthers beat their twin teenage brother.
The Expansion rivalry LIVES!
They have a much better regular season record than us (I’m looking at you, Seifert), but we are slightly better playoff record than them. They lead us in the all time series 3-1.

Dom “Pérignon” Capers only had one truly bad season at 4-12, but that was offset by the 12-4 season when we played in NFC championship in our 2nd season; he left Charlotte 4 games under .500. Foxy actually has a winning record with us (73-71), despite last season’s debacle. So really, it’s all Seifert’s fault. lol

He has been solid. Deserves better treatment than he has been getting of late with all the hot-seat BS.
The key for them having a better regular season record is the fact that they have avoided a 1-15 and a 2-14 season along the way.

I think we'll be ok
Cam is dying to win and if his confidence wasnt already high enough. He almost led us to victory over the defending champs. Weve got some good backups on defense. Connor is a good leader and Mac will probably send some complex blitzs to pressure Gabbert into bad throws. Even if we can just slow down MJD I think It’ll be enough to get the win. BTW I love that pic BW
Things could be worse ...
We’re bellyaching about injuries. Denver seems to have lost ALL of their receivers.
Things got so bad they lined up Tebow at wide out.
NOW, they’ve re-signed tight end Dante Rosario, ex Panther, ex-Bronco, ex-Dolphin, current Bronco AGAIN.
This is the third time poor Dante has worked for John Fox. Is he getting frequent miles with moving companies?
