Newton continues to blow our minds but he is still a rookie and rookies make mistakes, Cam Newton made plenty of rookie mistakes but he is has such great ability that he was able to still dazzle and impress and make history becoming the first ever quarterback to throw for 400 yards in his first two games, and also the 6th quarterback to throw for 400 yards in consecutive games, he joins Tom Brady who also entered that statistic today.
I for one never expected the year to start out like this for Cam Newton. Last week was amazing to say the least but this week insures that the Carolina Panthers have their franchise quarterback. But that is not to say he was perfect, Cam Newton met another Heisman Trophy winner today in Charles Woodson and got his first taste of an elite cornerack in the NFL and it was a very bitter taste.
Newton threw 3 interceptions and 2 were to Woodson while he was trying to force passes to Steve Smith which is what every young quarterback will try to do when you have a playmaker like Smith. Newton may have had his struggles but he was still able to be one of the best quarterback in week 2 which in my opinion is amazing, because normally whenever you look at a stat line and see 3 INT's on it you dont expect to see 432 yds. along with a touchdown beside it. Newton was also the Panthers leading rusher on the day due to DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewarts struggles.
I am at times a pessimist but at this time I cannot see anything to be upset about except of course for the lack of production by "Double Trouble" but lets be real these are two of the best running backs in the league the rust will be shaken off eventually and if I had to make a prediction im gonna say that Williams and Stewart will both look back on this game and come out next week against the Jacksonville Jaguars ready to perform at the level we are used to.
While Newton is impressive it doesnt change the fact the Panthers are still 0-2 and what really makes me feel better is that is exactly what Newton spoke of in his post game press conference and not about about his stats. This year will not get any easier for the Carolina Panthers who have the toughest schedule in the league statistically but they performed better against the Super Bowl Champion Packers then their division rivals the New Orleans Saints did which should tell you they definitely have a shot at beating the Saints who defeated the Bears today who the Panthers have week 4.
When you look at the way the Panthers played against the Packers you can make the assumption that Carolina could be looking at more upset wins then they originally thought they would have. This season might be a difficult one but it will mark a new era for them and this a quarterback that the Panthers have never had before and this is also a player that the whole state of North Carolina has never had in any sport this is an icon and a legend in the making as long as the Panthers and their fans are patient and allow him to grow and give him every opportunity to become the great quarterback he can become.
