Compared to last year our defense to a step back, but it looks like our offense took a leap forward. Cam Newton looked pretty good until the red zone at the end, but there were opportunities and to me it seemed like we missed those opportunities because of timing. If we had OTAs this year I think Cam would have completed 2 of those 3 opportunities and we would have tied the game.
More after the jump
If we had some better defensive play calling then we would have taken the lead instead of just tying the game. But again its more about not being familiar with the system. The man free blitz with a big play to a wide open doucet over the middle is my prime example. The play call itself was not a bad call, it was just really bad call against that formation. If our players on the field were more experienced with our new system I believe someone would have checked out of it. There is room for improvement in every aspect of the game and it was still a good performance for our first real game.
There is only one area I am disappointed in however. The offensive line. You have got to pass protect better against a four man rush guys, come on. The run blocking looked a little rusty as well. Step your game up offensive line you are way better than this.
My last point is one of caution. Cam Newton played well but the majority of his completions were against patrick peterson, and a secondary missing dominique rogers-cromartie. Lets see how he does against the Packers and we can get a better idea of where he is at. I think he will still look good.
