Newton Dazzles in Opening Loss to Cardinals 28-21

For all the Cam Newton detractors out there Panther fans have one thing to say: Suck it! Yes the Panthers did lose to the Cardinals on a late punt return by Patrick Peterson but outside of that the Panthers were oh-so-close to starting the season with a win.

Newton sets the rookie record for passing yards in their NFL debut. That's right, you are reading this correctly:

24 for 37 for 422 yards, 2 TDs, INT one TD rushing.

That's a staggering 17.6 yds per catch average. It's a bummer the Panthers lost this game but there is plenty to be happy about.

Here are my quick hits:

  • Cam Newton - encore mention on the awesome debut!
  • WR Steve Smith is back in a big way: 8 rec for 178 yards and 2 TDs, a 22 yard per catch average
  • CB Chris Gamble held Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald to 3 catches for 62 yards and no TDs
  • TE Greg Olsen took a little while to get going but finished with 4 receptions for 78 yards

More after the jump...

Star-divide

  • WR Brandon LaFell also had 4 receptions for 70 yards with a couple key 3rd down catches
  • LB Dan Conner filled in for the injured Jon Beason and finished to lead the Panthers with 5 tackles
  • DE Greg hardy had 4 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble the Panthers almost came up with

There is plenty to fault in the this game for the Panthers but we will save that for another time. I would do a poll for Panther player of the game but why bother? Who else would it be but Cam Newton?

Other than Cam Newton, the biggest shocks of the game were

Brandon LaFell and Chris Gamble both looking good out there.

The proverbial ball didn’t bounce our way today… but we should all be very excited, because it will, and sooner than I ever expected.

GO PANTHERS.

I disagree that we were unlucky.

The punt return was bad coverage by the kicking team – they assumed he was going to let the ball go/fair catch it.

Also there was the blown coverage on the King TD and the missed tackle on the other TD (whoever that was – Ducette? Or however you spell it).

Certainly problems that are eminently fixable, but nethertheless the reason we lost.

Just too bad our next game is against Green Bay

I was really hoping that we could take this game, so that we’d be a game up on the NFC South. That way after we lost next week, we’d still be tied for 1st.

STEVE SMITH!

by southtunnel on Sep 11, 2011 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Curiously, we could still be tied for 1st, even if we lose.

Our division foes have no locks, eithe.

The Saints host the Bears, who looked like they could play against anybody, after manhandling the highly-regarded Falcons.

Tampa Bay has to go to Minnesota, and the Bucs looked horrible, vs the Lions.

Atlanta is still wondering what hit them, and now they have to host the Eagles.

Anything can happen in this league.

by bigdavis on Sep 12, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Tampa Bay could handle Minnesota.

I’m not a fan of the Bears this season, but I definitely could be proven wrong for sure this week, as if last week wasn’t very convincing. Atlanta/Philadelphia is a tossup for sure, I give the edge to the Iggles for now. The fan in me says an upset against Green Bay is certainly possible (look at what we did in ‘95), but I certainly don’t hold any serious hope that it will be anything more than close.

Yes I'm a dude.

Would have liked a win

but things are still looking good. I thought we had it but no go. very promising future ahead. While Cam did do great I don’t think he is a automatic Player of the game. You gotta throw Smith in that hat. If the year continues like this then i could see Newton with ROY and Smith with comeback player of the year.

by pcroadrage on Sep 11, 2011 7:46 PM EDT reply actions

Smith had a great game, but Newton broke one of Manning’s records while becoming the first rookie QB to ever open with a 400 yard game (422)…accounted for all 3 of the teams’ TDs…with virtually no running game…on the road. So yes, he would be the automatic player of the game.

And...

Peyton Manning went 21-37, 302 yds, 1 TD, 3 INT at home with OTAs and mini-camp

Cam Newton went 24-37, 422 yds, 3 TD, 1 INT on the road without OTAs or mini-camp

Stafford threw for 422 yds in WEEK 10.

Cam just blew up the record books.

There is no comparison; Cam eviscerated Peyton Manning’s rookie debut record.

I'm more concerned about our O-line

Cam had to move around a lot to make plays, and they constantly had to use 2 TE’s for max protection and have Stewart block as well. With the O-line needing so much help, it’s no wonder Double Trouble couldn’t run the ball.

Expectations...

AZ was consistently stacking the box and blitzing like crazy. Of course we’re going to be in max protect. We would be retarded not to. There were very few busted blitz pickups and the OL held together long enough to give Cam a chance to make big plays. What more can you ask of an OL against a blitz happy defense?

When the other team brings the house, it is the job of the QB and WRs to make something happen quickly. They did just that and we made them pay.

by patosan on Sep 11, 2011 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

They stopped blitzing after Smith's 1st TD

Because it wasn’t working. So they started dropping everybody back in coverage to make sure are receivers were locked up. They didn’t blitz much the rest of the game until they took the lead in the 4th.

STEVE SMITH!

by southtunnel on Sep 11, 2011 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I don;t think that is correct… the cards were blitzing almost all of the game. Every time Cam got pressured or sacked was when the blitzed.

My recollection is that although they blitzed less, they were still bringing plenty of heat. I’ll take a second look though. I could be mistaken and caught up in the moment.

by patosan on Sep 11, 2011 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

We did not stop blitzing.

You guys were eating up our terrible Zone blitz coverage. When we were in Man coverage our rookie corners could not cover Steve Smith. Adrian Wilson only can do so much and Kerry Rhodes was not helping much over the top becouse he spent too much time peeking into your back field.
I hope Cam becomes a Pro-Bowl QB. and it was not becouse of our terrible secondary. I thought we were going to lose, but you threw the ball to the one spot we were kicking ass all game. You should have threw it to who ever was on Kerry Rhodes side of the field. Dont get me wrong, Rhodes was one of the few bright spots last year, but he was looking for the big hit today and that put him outta position too many times. You guys got picked twice over the middle and our LB’s had been playing well all game. 3 of our lb’s are old, but they were all on winning SuperBowl teams(Rams & Steelers) Glad you didnt pick on our rookies corners that last play.

We were looking for the run too much.

Thats why Smith was getting man coverage in the begining of the game. We had two rookies starting at corner and should have spent more time in Zone coverage during the pre-season. So when smith started burning our rookies and we saw you were not trying to run over us, we switched to zone and Kerry Rhodes was out of position and the rookies were not dilled enough, so that was not working well. It looked like we had guys all over your recivers, but it was on blown coverages and Wilson was the only back doing what he was suppose to do. Our LB’s & Line is what kept us in the game. Your OL started 2 rookies at guard? I couldnt tell. That was what was being posted on AZ site.
Glad we won, I realy thought you were gonna throw it to the corner on a fade over SS Rhodes. You had it open the last two plays, becouse he was looking into your backfield first then covering up top.

Cam is the real deal.

His play exceeded even my wildest, most optimistic expectations. Best debut by a rookie QB ever, by far! Not only statistically, but the fact that he only had, what, 5 or 6 weeks to prepare. Special teams played like ass. We had no discipline, Rivera will and should be pissed as hell. Cannot wait to hear what defensive tackle we pick up Tuesday, although the interior of the line played far better after halftime. Gamble played terrifically, IMO. Poorly timed blitzes, blown coverage, penalties and special teams did us in today.

Arizona was overload blitzing on just about every play toward the end.

The line had no chance, but soon Cam will be able to recognize and counter that.

by chatoka on Sep 11, 2011 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

And we seemed to try to go deep every time. The coaches BETTER work with this team to give Cam some quick throws over the blitz or we will get blitzed by every team.

That was weird

I thought the bigger problem was gonna be on the D line, but they came together and played tough after a slow start. The O line, looked pitiful at times.

Cam's the real deal!!!!

If he doesn’t get to hard on himself from the loss and the coaches keep coaching him up and with more time to grow the sky is the limit. It is just so amazing with 5 weeks of game play how much he is growing so fast. I mean the real bullets were flying today with schemes and what not and he looked so poised out there, like he knows he belongs and that he want’s to be the leader this team needs.

Man can you ask for anything more from your qb? I do have a question though, what did you all feel about Nanee? I was almost shocked that he could go up to 6 seconds before even looking at his QB. He had Severn chances to make big catches but never got his eyes around on his QB or the ball heading his ways.

I was really frustrated with him.

Twice near the endzone he was thrown the ball and didn’t even jump for it. The guy shows no effort. I didn’t like him when we picked him up and i like him even less now.

On the other hand Lafell looked really good and made great catches.

I didn't either

I didn’t dislike or like the Naane pickup but I hated the Clowney cut. I’ve cried about it before, but I’m starting to think the Panthers should really consider bringing him back and throwing him out there with SuperCam. Probably won’t happen though.

How about T. Davis. I’m VERY glad he’s back and is shaking the rust off rather quickly.

Cam was fantastic!

I think we pick up a DT or two to solidify that line, and when we do that, look out! Steve Smith abusing the next elite CB! D-Will didn’t play great, but a lot of that had to do with the non-stop blitzing. And our two DE’s played outstanding as well! If we only could have gotten that fumble early in the first, this would have been a different outcome.

Steve Smith ate some rookies for lunch period.

Then the Cards forgot how to play Zone coverage. Your line did better than your sites posts. ESPN said 4 sacks, but Porter got one that was nulled. As much as we blitzed the sacks/Ints should have been higher. We got the win, but your rookies out played ours. How many rookies were on your OL?

Let me go out and say that I am completely stunned and very pleased with the way he played today. He was pretty damn phenomenal out there in the face of some pretty constant pressure. I didn’t go into this game expecting a win, but I couldn’t be more pleased with how that has turned out.

My vote for unsung hero of the match though would be Chris Gamble. He did very well in holding Fitz to few catches and no TDs, with only 2 real exceptions that I can think of. Great game.

I wanted us to draft Blaine Gabbert, or even A.J. Green. Boy was I wrong (so far). Cam exceeded my wildest expectations, midway through the second half I said to myself, “dang he’s about to go over 300 yards.” When I saw his statline at the end of the game my jaw dropped. Just think, we’re a play away from talking about Cam winning his first game instead of just his statline. I may not have been in Cam’s corner pre-draft, but after he put on the silver and black I was fully behind him, like any of our players. i.e. do they players who suffer Achilles tears tend to lose speed or agility as a result?

by ppfcpp on Sep 11, 2011 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

unfortunately yes

Achilles tears are very serious and have ended/ruined careers. They rarely heal 100% and the play usually loses speed and stability. It isnt always disastrous but it’s not good. On an optimistic note it might not be a tear. A lot of times people assume the worst before it’s properly examined and the injury ends up not being that bad. He may have strained or pulled it. That happened to Pilarez. Everyone thought he tore his ACL but he only strained it.

Panther fans you are in for a thrilling season with Cam Newton.

NFC South better take notice. Lot of Cardinals fans were throwing in the towel halfway through the 3rd quarter because he was tearing up our defense. Hard to say I didn’t underestimate him with that performance but it seems like some folks underestimated the kid way too much. Only gripe I had with the game was some of the officiating. (The INT they took away from us and a couple other bad calls. Sure there were some going the other way too but I wasn’t looking for those.) After today I think Cam is going to get some viewing time from me on the nfl rewind just to see him play every week.

Just tempering my expectations a bit

Today was a great surprise that showed a lot of promise, but the Cardinals aren’t in the same class as the Packers. I’m very concerned about our offense.

I’m concerned with the run offense. It was almost nonexistent. Hopefully they can fix this going forward.

I attribute that to the O-Line

There weren’t many holes for the RBs today. With Otah being out so long and Piggy just getting into the line up that was always going to be an issue.

by aceofsween on Sep 11, 2011 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

It's already been said elsewhere...

but honestly, who’s to say that the Cards won’t be awesome this year? We have seen first hand what a competent quarterback can do for an offense. Kolb looked pretty damn competent to me.

I know I’m nuts, but I don’t sweat the Packers. They put their jerseys on one arm at a time just like our guys do. Let’s see how the “wine & cheese crowd” gets behind Cam at BoA next Sunday, and maybe we can rattle the champs a little bit. Anything is possible.

Just don't see how we can stop them on offense

That’s really my biggest concern. I’m not sure how to really evaluate our offense. Is this going to be the norm? Was it just an exceptional showing? I’m waiting to comment on that. But we do have some big holes on defense that the Packers will probably be able to exploit.

by aceofsween on Sep 11, 2011 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, the defense is definitely going to struggle. Only thing in our favor is that it will be at home in warm temps. Other than that… yeah, it’ll be painful.

I don't think they can exploit them any more than the Cardinals did.

Green Bay is a good team but theyre just like every other nfl team, all filled with pros. I believe the Cards did just as much to the holes as any team can. But hopefully we are going to pick up some help this week from all i have read. The announcers said we are at 52 & will be getting a dt this week. GB doesn't have a good OL and run game, so it'll be sorta like this week against Kolb on O

Mobile QB with good receiving weapons, where our pressure can get there and we can manage their run with our suspect run D. It’ll be up to the CBs and Safeties to win the matchup. Their defense vs. our offense will be a wildcard, depends on how well we run the ball.

In a way im glad Panthers lost. Here is a intresting thing I found. The only rookie QB to win a opener in the last 14 yrs was David Carr and some other QB i forgot the name of. Point is.. Vick, Manning, Stafford, Eli Manning and Bradford ALL lost a season opener. With that said, i will take a loss any day on opening day if it means our QB will be more manning and Less Carr.

Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez won their first NFL starts.

I can fully understand how you couldn’t remember these two guys; it’s not like they’ve done anything noteworthy in the NFL. Also, Chris Weinke won in his debut, which along with Carr I guess would add credibility to your theory that Cam would have been in “bad company” if we won today.

Regardless, to say you’re “glad Panthers lost” is absurd. Or maybe I’m just not nearly that superstitious.

I'm not buying this at all yet!

The Saints got beat by a VERY good, SuperBowl winning team. And everyone knows the Lions, who beat the Bucs, are seriously on the rise. We very might have gotten mutilated by those teams today.

ATL should take a step back… But they’ll still win a lot of games. We’re definitely going to make things VERY competitive. But making the playoffs is still going to be VERY tough in this division.

I would like to see some zone blocking for blitzes this season

If they create holes in the pocket on blitzes, Cam is going to destroy teams on the ground (like the gash against CIN). The blocking against Zona’s blitzing was not good and Cam had nowhere to go.

Thisis the first time I've been truly excited about this team in a while

Watching Cam tonight was magical. I have no clue whatsoever where this came from, especially after his average preseason. As much as I’m excited about Cam, I’m probably more excited to see Smitty finally be able to be himself and produce as he normally does. He was AMAZING.

I liked what I saw from the defense, as well. Overall, it was shaky, but the interior DL played surprisingly well. I liked seeing them drop CJ in coverage a bit, as well. It was interesting, and nearly resulted in a pick. Greg Hardy was outstanding tonight as well. He was chasing Kolb all over the field.

I expect to see a lot of optimism and few pessimistic things (DeAngelo) tomorrow in the optimist.

and most of the offense. I’m a bit surprised how average our running game looked, but I’m not too worried about that. I am a bit worried about our defense though, as the Cardinals put up 28 points on us, and should have been 35 if Beanie didn’t fumble that toss.

Before we go proclaiming ourselves playoff contenders, let’s remember this was Arizona, probably the most winnable game on our schedule. With that said, I do believe we will at least be competitive in all our games this year, which is much more than we could say about last year. And for that I’m excited! Go Panthers!

About the lines

O-Line and D-Line looked terrible. I think our O-Line will get better. Piggy is back and will take a little while to warm up and get use to the system. Otah is also back from injury and is not at his best. D-Line is a little more of a concern. The DTs looked overwhelmed and kept getting blown back. The fact that the Cards ran all over us is embarrassing. They are young and will likely improve but it’s not looking good. Hopefully we sign someone competent soon.

by pcroadrage on Sep 11, 2011 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

I dont think the D-Line is something to be concerned about

CJ and Hardy were solid at DE. While the DTs weren’t great, they played better than I expected. Keep in mind they only used three guys there today (two rookies and a second year player) so DT play should get better throughout the season. I also expect them to sign a vet DT in the next couple days, which will also help.

D-Will starts for a reason, he averages 5 yards per carry through out his career. If you actually watched the game you would have seen that Arizona blitzed him every time he got the ball and he never had a hole to run through. Both of Stewarts big runs were made because he had good blocking in front of him. Williams is a great RB, give him a chance and he will make plays. Ask anyone... I've been saying this for 2 years now

Not that I’ve turned on DWill… But being stacked at RB, while extremely thin at other positions is just dumb.

It's not a bad thing to have a bunch of good RB.

that being said i believe that we over spent on Williams. he’s getting just over 8 mill a season i think he’s worth more like 6.5-7.0 million per season

Oh and something you’ve jammed down our throats for a few years now.

Oh my, i saw the article on Yahoo that was about Cam breaking Manning’s record. When it said the record was 302, I thought he had around 320 or so, was so surprised to see over 400. Wish I could have seen the game, seems like it’s going to be an exciting year.

My quick thoughts:

- Newton was awesome but scared the crap out of me with some of his throws and how he was taking forever to get rid of the ball on some plays. I loved how he utilized all of his receivers and seemed to make plays out of nothing, though. Guy is way more accurate than I thought he would be.

- Steve Smith. That is all.

- Defense was spotty and Beanie Wells had his way with us early on. May want to sign someone at DT for depth purposes because I felt that Fua and McClain were getting pounded early.

- I knew Beason’s injury was something serious when I saw it happened. Seriously bummed even though Connor did well in his place.

- Gamble played well overall but I felt that Kolb wasn’t targeting Fitzgerald as much as he should have. He was utilizing his slot guys and tight ends more.

- Pass rush looked pretty great, I thought. Johnson and Hardy were making Kolb scramble a lot and forced quite a few questionable passes.

- Are we looking to sign a fullback? I’m not 100% sure what happened to Fiametta but I saw that we were using Olsen in the backfield on a lot of plays and it seemed to really effect our running game. Stewart looked a lot better than D-Will did, in my opinion.

- That Doucet TD should have never happened. We sent at least six guys after Kolb on third down, left the slot wide open and that happens. If we kept at least one more guy back in coverage, then it’s still a tie game. That’s the one thing from the game that pissed me off.

good points

The one thing that pissed me off was letting PP7 return that punt for a TD. The coverage unit looked like they were lost out there.

Yeah, the punt return was awful but the Doucet TD made me want to break my TV because I knew something like that would happen when I saw how many guys we were blitzing.

The one thing that pissed me off

was the Punt return. Why in the world did those gunners just run right past him. It was ridiculous.

FB

We cut Fiametta a little while ago and claimed a FB cut by Detroit (forgot his name), but he was inactive tonight. Richie Brockel played FB in his place.

by Ol' Uncle Munnerlyn on Sep 11, 2011 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting. I felt like we didn’t use him at all because I saw a lot of single-back sets and when we weren’t Olsen was in the backfield. Speaking of recently signed players I didn’t notice, was Butler active today?

by MyFriendCorey on Sep 11, 2011 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sure

i believe he was active, but I didn’t see him on the field at all.

-I will be shocked if they don’t sign a vet DT this week. We have one open roster spot right away thanks to cutting MJG, and may have another if Beast is put on IR.

-I haven’t really looked, but I’m hopeful that Kobb wasn’t targeting Fitz because Gamble was blanketing him.

- The Doucet TD was definitely blown coverage, but it still wouldn’t have been a TD if Pugh wouldn’t have taken such an incredibly bad angle. Even if he hit him but didn’t get the tackle, it might have slowed him down enough for someone else to catch up. But instead he took a terrible angle and didn’t even come close to make a tackle.

"taking forever to get rid of the ball"

It takes time in the pocket, and not being afraid to stand in there, under heavy pressure, to complete 8 passes of 20+ yds. And these weren’t embellished by YAC, either.

That’s not an average of 20, that’s 8 different completed passes of 20+ yds.

FYI, that’s 2 more than any other QB this week.

If we’re gonna play a vertical passing game, we need a strong, efficient, confident QB with a big arm. Not what we had last year, a wimp who folds like a napkin, at the slightest hint of pressure.

I'm sorry DWill fans, but DeAngelo is NOT a good receiver

He’s had questionable drops in the past. And he missed another catch-able, likely 1st down today. Goody on the other had, missed the game tying 1st down… But that was still a receiver catch. He needs to be more involved.

Also, Stewart was flat out running harder than DeAngelo. I’m sticking to my story that we should have let DWill go. Stewart running hard + Goody catching out of the backfield might very well be a better combo… And would have provided serious cash for resources elsewhere.

He's also not the work horse type back that Stewart is

He’s a guy that makes big plays when he has a hole. But sometimes, like today, there’s just not much room to run.

STEVE SMITH!

by southtunnel on Sep 11, 2011 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

As a stout DeAngelo fan

I really want to defend him, but you are right. He has great vision but sometimes, like today, there just isnt anywhere to go unless you drive right through someone. Maybe in the long run letting him go would have been better but I’m still glad we have him

by Brigade17 on Sep 11, 2011 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you on some level

I will give you that he isn’t much of a receiver. But he is still a great RB. They didnt give him that contract for shits and giggles. He may have the best vision in the NFL, the down side is that when theres no where to go he can’t utilize that. When holes open up he will be making big time plays.

by pcroadrage on Sep 11, 2011 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

That's just the way the backs are.

D-Will is a more relaxed runner, he’s always looking for that cutback lane, which is why he’s such a deadly weapon. Stewart isn’t as capable of that 60 yard dagger to the defense that D-Will rips off several times a year. Give D-Will a 7, even an 8 man box, instead of the 9 and 10 he was seeing during the game, and you’ll see why we paid him to stay.

As far as receiving, idk what is going on. He hasn’t played very well as a receiver this year including preseason, but he looked decent his rookie year, and he’s the NCAA’s all time yardage leader so the talent has to be there somewhere. Rust maybe? I know the backs are a point of emphasis in a Chud offense, but we have had limited practice time.

One last thing, we had enough money to sign another vet at DT, we just chose not to. It’s also not D-Will’s fault starters at other positions got hurt. You’re not going to have top notch depth at every position coming off of a 2-14 season, that’s not realistic.

Yes I'm a dude.

I just finished replaying(about 10 times) the 4th and 10 play...

when Arizona was off sides. Did anyone else besides me think that Olsen actually came down in bounds on his side. There was never a replay that I saw with the vantage point coming from outside the endzone(which would have been the absolute best angle), but I think it was overlooked. What do you all think?

by Derek Leazer on Sep 11, 2011 9:50 PM EDT reply actions

he was out of bounds

They review every potential TD play now. They would have called the refs to officially look at it had he gotten his feet down or if it were close enough to warrant an official review.

His feet landing in bounds had nothing to do with it. He fell on his hip.

Did you see the angle from the outside of the endzone because I sure didn’t?(I know they replay it upstairs, by the way). His hip looked in bounds to me.

by Derek Leazer on Sep 11, 2011 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought he might have been in bounds as well.

I was pretty pissed they didn’t show a replay of it on TV.

the hip doesn't count...

It’s elbows, knees, and feet that count.

If he clearly landed in bounds...

they wouldn’t need to review it. Flawed logic. They miss calls all of the time and plays are challenged. Again, I know that plays are reviewed with 2 minutes and under only by the replay booth upstairs. I believe you when you say that hips don’t count, but that is illogical as well. An elbow or a knee isn’t any more of a body part than a hip is. Just ask Shakira.

by Derek Leazer on Sep 11, 2011 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Whether it's logical or not doesn't matter...them's the rules.

The replay officials don’t “miss calls”. They review EVERYTHING. If he landed in bounds, it would have been reviewed and the officials on the field would have been notified.

by landing on his hip inbounds in the endzone?

Yes I'm a dude.

by Flowing Willow on Sep 14, 2011 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

I would imagine that either his knee or elbow would have touched the ground as well, otherwise it wouldn’t have counted, or he didn’t land near the sideline. If you catch a ball and land on your hip in the end zone and stay in bounds the entire time, the play counts because you crossed the plane of the goal with the ball, but if you land on your hip and roll out of bounds, then it doesn’t because you were “down” out of bounds.

Someone in Rivera's inner circle should try and convince him to forfeit our home opener.

There’s no need in risking injury to any more players if the game is already lost before the coin toss. We can gameplan for the Jaguars for two weeks straight, which will give us a decent chance of being 1-2 at the end of week 3.

forfeit the game? Na I want a coach who will have his play their with effort/pride to fight for a victory no matter who it is. Injuries can happend any given game or play, can’t escape it.

I'm going to nit pick on the play calling at the 11 yard line...

at the end of the game(great offensive game plan overall). The last play to Goodson should have been called on first down. Imagine if we would have had the ball on the 2 yard line on 2nd down. Of course, hindsight is always 20/20.

by Derek Leazer on Sep 11, 2011 10:04 PM EDT reply actions

No we wouldn’t have. We were 5 yards closer due to the offsides by Porter on 4th down. Granted a play like that would have helpful, but we wouldn’t have been on the 2 yard line.

Should have killed us on a fade to the corner of the end zone.

Last two plays Rhodes was not paying much attention to the out side WR that he would have to take over the top.
