What will the 2014 Carolina Panthers look like?
In the wake of the Charles Godfrey extension I got thinking, we sure do have a plethora of players signed long term now. As a result I thought I would look at the potential Carolina Panthers depth chart in three years time. Is it pointless? Sure. Ludicrous? Maybe. I thought to myself though "It's a Saturday afternoon...why not?"
Of course draft picks will play a major role, and I wont pretend to guesstimate how the next three drafts will pan out so in these cases you'll just have to accept when I say "draft pick" regarding a specific position on the depth chart.
Offense
QB: Cam Newton/ FA signing/ *draft pick*
RB: DeAngelo Williams/ *draft pick*/ Mike Goodson
FB: Jerome Felton
WR1: *draft pick*/ Armanti Edwards/ *draft pick*
WR2: David Gettis/ Brandon LaFell/ *draft pick*
TE: Greg Olsen/ Gary Barnidge/ *draft pick*
LT: Jordan Gross/ *draft pick*
LG: Travelle Wharton/ Byron Bell
C: Ryan Kalil
RG: Geoff Schwartz/ *draft pick*
RT: Jeff Otah/ *draft pick*
Defense
LDE: Charles Johnson/ *draft pick*
DT: Terrell McClain/ *draft pick*
NT: *draft pick*/ Sione Fua
RDE: Greg Hardy/ Eric Norwood
LOLB: Thomas Davis/ Lawrence
MLB: Jon Beason/ Jordan Senn
ROLB: James Anderson/ *draft pick*
CB: *draft pick*/ Captain Munnerlyn/ *draft pick*
CB: Brandon Hogan/ Darius Butler
SS: Sherrod Martin/ Sean Considine
FS: Charles Godfrey/ Jordan Pugh
What would you change in this projection?

I'm assuming we either trade Stewie or allow him to walk
It’s hard seeing a team without Stewart in the backfield.

Yep
I think long term the franchise wont tie up a large amount of money to two running backs at a position where it’s fairly easy to find a replacement through the draft.
As for Gamble, I think looking at him being 31 in 2014 the organization will have found a new #1 CB
Gross will be 34 and he's far from elite these days. I'd replace him as soon as possible.
"Nah, you look like Elijah Wood." - danmerqury
Hence the draft pick behind him
I was thinking in the 2013 or 2014 draft the Panthers would take a tackle early
I am hoping and praying
We go O tackle first pick next year, for aging gross and broken otah

But with williams almost being thirty, I would think it would be smarter to keep Stewart around then to let him go.
I think this is more likely too
Especially with DeAngelo getting more carries in the meantime. Of course a lot depends on how either holds up.

deangelo is a MUCH better RB
i just can’t understand how people dont see that

MUCH?
I think he is better but not a hell of a lot. This franchise could role with either but williams will be fairly old for a back by then. Also they both seem happy here. The FO knows what they can do given the opportunity. If they weren’t willing to have them both on the books, why would they use a first rounder on stewie? Hmmm? Riddle me that

Were not talking about who's better now
RBs typically have short careers. Were talking about how good dWill will be after 10 years in the league, and his 7th as a starter.

Stewart is a star.
There is no way we let him go. I think they will cut Williams or trade him before we ever let him walk. It makes no sense to just sign Deangelo who is almost 30 just to let Stewart walk. I think we will resign Stewart.
Sooo me, Cam, Ron, Marty, Don, Chud, Sean, Mike and Jerry are going out to have some Cammy Cam juice... Who's coming?
Wouldnt Goodson be the #2 back by 2014?
Assuming Stewie is gone, one would suspect Goodson would take over as D-Will’s backup. Otherwise, its being assumed Goodson has peaked and the heir apparent to the starting job will drafted in the first round of 2014. Also, is Connor gone via FA or is he traded?

Also
The next two drafts should be focused on rebuilding and improving the lines. That way the door is open for the Panthers to take a skill player in 2014.

Of course there is the WR spot
Does anyone on the current roster take over for Smitty or do we take a caliber wideout next year. Blackmon anyone?

I think the way our WR core is now,
We are set up for a a committee type thing with no true No. 1, kind of like the Saints, at-least as of now that’s how I see it.
Good point
Use a combination of Gettis, LaFell and Edwards at the #1 position unless there is a glaring need to fill that spot with a high caliber WR.

Otah not likely here then.
As much as I would love to see him here for many years pile driving opposing defenders I just don’t see it. I don’t know if he makes it through one more game. The guy just can’t stay healthy and most likely is gone soon, and possibly never to play football again.
I hope I am wrong.
I like collard greens.
Unless of course he plays all 16 games this year.

I think it's sorta crazy to think DeAngelo will still be starting here in 4 years
He hasn’t even been that durable the last couple years. RBs often peak and then drop off VERY quickly. Sean Alexander? LT?
Stewie is younger, will be getting slightly less carries until then, is nearly as good a RB… And can play through injuries when needed to.

And I say "crazy" for emphasis only ;)
Not that you’re crazy. However I once hear that crazy people never believe or admit they’re crazy. So since then, I just assume I am crazy… Maybe you are too afterall!

Deangelo is under contract. Stewart (likely) will require big bucks. I think we'll need to pick up a RB gem in the draft,
between now and then, but Deangelo looks ready for prime-time now. I say he’s got a good 5 years left. But then, like you I effin’ KNOW I’m crazy, Hell I’m crazy, you’re crazy, we’re all effin’ crazy…
Someone please find my meds…

Shaun Alexander and LT aren't great comparisons
considering they were absolutely run into the ground year in and year out. Which is why it’s imperative we hold onto Stew.

DWill was "run into the ground" at Memphis
Like 7500 total yards before we even got him. So I think the LT comp is fine. He had 8 good seasons in San Diego… Were saying DWill will still be the starter going into his 9th. That’s pushing it.
More importantly, San Diego should have kept Turner instead… We should take note.

He hasn't ever carried the ball more than 275 times a season even.
Workload wise he’s fine. LT and Shaun Alexander had college workloads to take into account as well, I think Williams will be effective into his 30’s like Thomas Jones.
Yes I'm a dude.

in his defense
I believe they put him on ir last year without real need to just to let the younger guys get some reps. Afterall isn’t that what Richardson wanted from the coach?
Official member of the 2011 Panthers Mafia
i got this impression as well.
I think another explanation could be that D-Will called BS on an obvious lame-duck, eff-it-let’s-tank-for-the-#1-pick strategy at the end of last season. If i was him I wouldn’t want to be shoved intot he grinder for an obvious losing effort. Maybe it’s some of both, sort of a win-win. Rest the Stud and give reps to the young-uns.
I don't think Richardson wanting to play young guys had anything to do with DWill
Rookie WRs and QB, sure. But you don’t sit a ProBowler just to get a younger guy reps. That would be crazy… See above for more details on “crazy”.

the season was d-u-n done by the time D-Will sat
I think we were in tank-mode. Just my humble opinion.
Who cares?
This is mental rosterbation at its most extreme.
We don’t even know what the Panthers of October, 2011 will look like.

Jordan Gross will have retired. I think he might already be on the far side of the hill.
Can You Say Bankruptcy?
No, it’s not really that bad, but I read last month that the extension contract costs at that point would put them over the cap by 2014. {This would, of course, be shortly followed by either Cam’s costly extension or the cost of our next “franchise” QB.}
If all these players work out, there will have to be some undesireable cuts, trades, or significant contract reworking.
the cap is going to explode upwards in the 2013 season.
The TV contracts get renegotiated at that time, thus a huge increase.
I don't think LaFell will be on the team
Out of AE, LaFell, Gettis and Pilares… I think LaFell is most likely to go the route of Dwayne Jarrett. Truth is that until one of these guys really has a big season, anyone of them could be gone.
