Panthers Fall to Steelers in Final Preseason Game 33 -17

This game had a little bit of everything, the good, the bad and the ugly. Yet the end result is I feel a little better about this team in spite of the loss.

The Good

  • QB Cam Newton led the offense to a touchdown on his only drive, a drive that featured a nice mixture of running and passing culminating in a 10 yd TD pass to Jeremy Shockey
  • RB Mike Goodson was very active with 7 carries for 31 yds (4.4 ypc) and 2 receptions for 39 yards including an electric screen pass for 38 yards
  • WR David Clowney continues to run good routes and make plays with 2 receptions for 45 yards including a 41 yard score from Derek Anderson
  • QB Derek Anderson was 11 for 19 with a TD in a little more than 2 quarters of play. He may have just jumped Clausen on the depth chart

We've got more quick hits from this game...after the jump...

Star-divide

The Bad (Injuries)

  • RG Garry Williams went down with a broken leg and is most likely lost for the season. It goes without saying the Panthers are a mess at RG and most certainly will have to claim a player on waivers this weekend.
  • QB Jimmy Clausen had a scrotal contusion (per James Dator)...lol just kidding

The Ugly

  • QB Jimmy Clausen was pretty terrible going 7 for 17 for 87 yards
  • The run defense was gashed early by the Steelers so we still have a need for some veteran depth up front

Definitely

I really hope we can find a roster spot for him. He’d be a heat seeker on special teams.

I think Clausen drilled in the final nails tonight. Just can’t see how anybody in the org can feel comfortable with him moving forward.

To be fair, I think Anderson did as much to EARN the 2nd spot as Clausen did to lose it...

if not more so. Anderson looked really good tonight. I never like to blame quarterbacks for “tip drill” picks, but Clausen was borderline awful tonight.

God forbid Cam gets hurt or crumbles under the pressure of games that count, but if he does, I definitely want Derek out there in his place.

Derek can still be an effective QB in this league.

He’s shown that in every appearance he’s made, and his sideline camaraderie with his teammates is surprisingly (to me) goos to see.

A couple months ago, when we were all posting about who our vet backup should be, I wasn’t in favor of him, but now I’m happy with the choice.

by bigdavis on Sep 2, 2011 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah that's what shocked me

Anderson always came off kinda… dickish… to me. From what we’ve heard about the Cardinals, that locker room was kinda toxic. It’s nice to know it didn’t follow him.

by aceofsween on Sep 2, 2011 5:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't want to gloat...BUT

it was nice to see him finally get some reps, and like i’ve said before, he can be a very capable back-up/starter still. Stays in the pocket, doesn’t panic, and is a very good game manager. He’s not going to be the flashy guy, but sometimes the steady hand is a winning hand!

by toonman on Sep 2, 2011 8:34 AM EDT up reply actions

After all that we as Panther fans had to tolerate last year, he was a model of steady.

He won’t be the template for long-term playoff teams, but appears to be good enough to win as many games he loses.

That’s probably the job description of a good backup.

by bigdavis on Sep 2, 2011 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Definitely agree

nice to see level headed QB play- for the most part from all 3. Clausen has shown vast improvement in that area. Cam, also has exceeded expectations in that area, no doubt. Very impressed with his poise under pressure.

by toonman on Sep 2, 2011 8:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Cam could get hurt but i dont see him crumbling under any pressure. He showed that last year. Wasn’t the NFL but most people couldn’t of delivered game in game out like he did under that spotlight.

There is no way Jimmy is still #2 on the depth chart

I can’t see a scenario where Cam gets hurt and Rivera decides to put Clausen in instead of Anderson. Anderson can at least step up in the pocket and doesn’t run backwards the entire game.

Yea. Unfortunatley for Jimmy his future isnt looking so bright. Dereck Anderson is all but certain to be our NO 2. Kind of sucks, I hoped Jimmy would show enough improvement for trade reasons bit oh well.

Cam looked very good against Steelers 1st string defense. He looked a lot more comfortable and poised in the pocket and his passes looked a lot more accurate and his mechanics showed much improvement.

I think we can put to rest the whole “Cam’s running wont translate well against NFL defenses” argument. As he proved tonight against the best defense in the NFL and last week against the bengals, his running game is more than good enough for the NFL.

by PantherTrain on Sep 1, 2011 11:24 PM EDT via mobile reply actions   1 recs

thing about it is if you watch the Bengals and the run tonight it doesn’t really look like he is running that hard. He picks up chunks quickly. Big man big stride

by aceofsween on Sep 2, 2011 5:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it's this:

Notre Dame fans have developed a serious inferiority complex lately where they want desperately for rest of the college football world to believe their still an elite, top flight program when in reality they’re little more than Indiana’s basketball program at this point.

Because of this their quest for legitimacy transcends performance by the team on Saturdays as they want everything that’s touched the University to be spun into gold. So, whether they like Clausen or not they will talk him up, claim he’s the best thing etc. all in some vain attempt to make people believe they’re not a two bit program anymore.

honestly

i seem to be the only person on earth who wouldnt care whatsoever if Cam took money. More power to him. Infact im glad we have such a good QB that top colleges are willing to pay 6 figures for him.

College players should get paid anyway. College ball industry make tons of money off these players and they dont get paid a dime, oh yea. " but they get a scholarship to a great school" bump that! Money talks BS walks.

Dont get me wrong, i dont think college stars should get paid millions, but 6 figures is fair. Seriously, if Cam held a press conference tomm and announced he got paid, I would just shrug my shoulders and say “so?”

i agree

I bet Auburn made about $12-15 million on the championship game, and the SEC gets a separate cut. I would pay any of you $100,000 if you can bring me tens of millions.

But what if the booster gave his dad the money, and Cam didn’t know about it (kind of impossible, but you never know), could the NCAA then say Cam should’ve been ineligible. They can ask him to give back his Heisman, but the school won’t give back the money they made. Then maybe Goodell tries to suspend him like he did Pryor….that crap makes no sense at all.

by usana_gaines on Sep 2, 2011 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Nah, they wouldn't suspend him.

If Cam does end up being guilty and what not, it’ll be more like Reggie Bush. Bush didn’t have any problems from the NFL. Pryor only had some problems because he was already suspended and the NFL suspension helped him get into the supplemental draft.

Technically it does and doesn't

The hardware can help to optimize your software and applications. What you use at work is generally very under powered and the cheapest thing a company can get away with to do the job. Now if you had a PC with the same amount of money spent on hardware, you would notice a vast difference. I have built PC gaming rigs for PC’s and trust me, they can get downright nasty performance wise.

Actually Unix is the foundation for all

Linux is the updated GUI version also containing a command prompt. There are several flavors of Linux. But yeah Windows and Mac OSX are based off of the Unix kernel. Google is ran on Linux as are most databases and power computers. I finally got to use my degree, for the this one explanation, sad, lol.

Extra little fact for Alac

Pointless I know, but once I get started, lmao. Linux gets it’s name from Linus Torvalds who made it. He took the original Unix kernel and modified it.

It's amazing how it took off too...

Linus made it as a “hobby” way back when, and now Linux (Ubuntu specifically) is the 3rd most popular OS in the world. Granted it’s way behind Windoze and OSX, but still…

I've never played around with Fedora

I honestly just started using Linux exclusively a little over a year ago. I tried OpenSUSE once because I liked the way their KDE desktop looked, but I never could figure out how to use the RPM package manager. (Perhaps you could give me pointers, lol.)

I think once my Ubuntu 10.04LTS gets to end of life I might have to give it another shot, because I absolutely despise Unity, and will have to figure something else out if I want to continue computing with a Linux system.

Xerox actually invented the GUI in Palo Alto. Steve Jobs introduced Bill Gates to them, and some of Bills people essentially reversed engineered it and took it to market as windows. Xerox also invented the mouse as well. This was back in the early 80’s. Xerox had it stored and just laying around and never took it to market because they figured it had no use. Bill Gates actually got started because Microsoft originally wrote programs for Apple.

tonights loss im fine with. All i really wanted to see from tonight was Cam improvement and he delivered in spades.. Prove he can run through the best defense in the NFL? Check. Show improvement in mechanics and accuracy? check, get his first TD from the pocket and not rushing? check. Still hasnt fumbled or thrown an interception? check.

Infact, he hasnt fumbled or thrown an interception all pre season which alone speaks volumes considering hes a rookie. Also glad to see Goodson playing good and NOT fumbling!

Overall despite the loss, very optimistic after tonight’s performance.

I look for a lot of action, picking up DL, OL, and CBs, that come available after Saturday's cuts.

Those are our glaring weaknesses.

But if those weaknesses are corrected…voila, we don’t have any!

We are sooo stocked with quality players at RB, TE, LB, S, and Kickers, we can then play with anybody.

In limited action, there were a lot of bright spots tonight: J-Stew, Otah, Hardy (these last 2 looked fine in their first appearances), Thomas Williams, Edwards (a few drops, but he’s coming along), Newton (getting better and better), Derek Anderson (makes me feel secure knowing he’s there at backup; his experience shows), Godfrey and Pugh at S, Goodson (Mr. Ball Security now), Sutton, even Vaughn, Kaiser at DE (glad to see a DE get a Sack), Shockey, Clowney great TD catch in stride, and even Corvey Irvin made a play.

Despite his QB pursuit on one late play, however, Everette Brown showed no penetration against their 3rd string blockers, and along with Norwood, has shown me nothing.

Very interesting weekend coming up, and many new faces on the roster, I hope. Big burly men, who can block and tackle, and aren’t nice or friendly.

Foxy and Elway are gonna lose big together

I don’t understand how a 4-12 team hires the coach from a team that went 2-14. Raise your hand if you would’ve done it. Now there’s this big mess about Tebow because they decided to make him the starter without seeing him play, and now that they’ve seen him play, they make him 3rd string. Quinn was the 22nd pick when he was drafted, and Tebow was the 25th pick. I hope the Broncos are ready for a lot of 7-9 seasons.

Felton for sure - he's a consummate pro to step in as he did on short notice, and play like that.

But Brockel I don’t see any need for – can’t Hartsock fill that role?

It’d be a pity if Sutton were cut. He’s always done everything that was asked of him – and well, too. He’s hard to bring down, doesn’t fumble, gets the extra yard, disguises and runs the screen to perfection, and oh, that beautiful blitz pick-up he made tonight, which allowed the pass to Wright to be completed.

They seemed to showcase Vaughn on more reps than Sutton got, but maybe they were advertising Vaughn to the league. Sutton’s a keeper, IMO.

by TS BOBCAT on Sep 1, 2011 11:46 PM EDT reply actions

He gets open, which is admirable, and he made, I think, 3 catches, but could have had 3 more, which were thrown right to his hands.

I’m not counting the tipped ball, which was INT’d – that was well defended.

But the slant at the GL went right through his hands, and hit him in the grill.

If Goodson can cure his fumbling problem, through remedial learning, then Edwards needs to have bricks (or hatchets, or something) thrown at him, until he catches, say, 20 in a row.

Im not giving up on Armanti. WR normally break though in the 3rd year. He is a project convert. He improved greatly since last season it seems. If he does the same this season and off season. I think he can pan out. he deff has break away speed to get open. And in the NFL that cant be over looked.

And I have a strong feeling that he’ll have some more exotic plays designed for his skills, which aren’t to be shown in pre-season games.

Sadly, this is something Fox and co. did not do at all last year, effectively putting him a year behind. Seriously, I think he's progressing really well.

He’s running crisp routes, which he didn’t have a clue about last year, before working with Moose. He’s getting open, where the QB can locate him. And he’s getting his hands on the ball.

Now he’s only got to improve that focus, so as to make the reception of the ball his only goal, ignoring the hit he’s about to receive.

Armanti just needs to learn to catch the "tough" catches

He did drop one easy one, clearly his fault, but he needs to learn to make catches with defenders draped on him or when he needs to fight for a ball.

The slant, it was high and behind him a tad, but you gotta make that catch even if you are getting hit immediately. There is room for improvement in his game.

But this shouldn’t be all about the drops… Armanti showed he can get open and get separation. That is more than most of our receivers can do. You can tell the position is becoming more natural for him. I think the coaching staff needs to have him catch more balls in practice “under duress”. We know he can catch them wide open, now its time to work on the finer points of catching in traffic.

The worst part about LaFell is all he has to do is put his body into those DBs

Like the did on that catch. If he would just start cracking some skulls out there, he would be fine. He is bigger than all those guys he went up against. Just throw a body into them and insist on making the catch.

He needs a fire lit under him and fast. He is not playing to his potential, and it worries me. We need a possession receiver who will fight.

I sense the coaches were targeting others tonight - Edwards for experience, and Wright, Clowney, and Darvin Adams, even Jamorris Warren, to see if they had anything to offer.

It wouldn’t help evaluate which WRs to cut, if they just threw to LaFell. He’s locked into the rotation, and we’ll see that next week, I’m sure.

im not even sure you have to name a 3rd QB anymore. Id be for it but i doubt Hurney could swallow the Clausen pick yet

Hurney, during the 4th quarter, was gushing about how professionally Clausen had "handled the situation".

Didn’t sound as if he were soured on him just yet.

But his normally pitiful performance tonight, contrasted with how efficiently Anderson went about his business, must make it difficult to keep defending. Granted, he had no passes batted won at the LOS, and there were a few drops (and the tipped INT wasn’t on him), but we still saw the TopCat lobs, the fetal sack acceptance, the overthrows, the slow decision-making. I guess there’ll still be those supporters of his who’ll say they see “improvement,” but I don’t. I’ve never seen a single sign that he could be counted upon to do anything exceptional to – oh, let’s say, win a game. He is a very pedestrian QB.

i agree JC's attitude has been very very good

but i hope that hurney is man enough to see his performance level is not good enough to make this team

He is brady quinn 2.0. NO CLUE what Weiss did to them at ND. Both guys who ran such a NFL ready system are constantly lost. Clausen was a highly ranked prospect coming out of high school too. Kid with the Golden Arm….

I would love

If they got rid of the FB and the 3rd sting QB position in place for people who will already on the team..Get rid of the FB for the blocking TE they picked up and get rid of 3rd string in place of Edwards

Felton will be our FB until Fiametta gets well

and if he impresses in his oppty more than Tony did in the past month, he might steal his job. Jackson cut today, and Brockel will be cut Sat.

Felton was a steal pickup.

It shows they know their rosters, and the quick cuts of Balmer and some passing LS show they face up to a bad choice quickly.

I think we’ll see some “surprises” as cuts this weekend, which will free up spots for new blood that we see set free from other teams, just as Felton was.

by bigdavis on Sep 2, 2011 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Felton looks like a major upgrade from Fi

I would cut Fi and keep Felton, hang onto Sutton, Clowney and cut Claussen if it makes financial sense. Replace everybody on the defensive line (lol) except hardy and cj from waiver wire (if possible). Get a couple new OL for the RG position. Pick up another cb and maybe a wr and cram the playbook into them as fast as possible. Hope it only takes a couple weeks for the newbies to learn.

Agree

He did look solid and has some tough running ability. Cutting Clausen would be nice, don’t think it will happen though. I think we should at least keep Fua and McClain to see how they develop.

Good to see some offense

It was good to see the Panthers move down the field in the first drive. Defense looked a little slack but we are missing Beason and have a fresh Hardy in there. Here’s to hoping for a couple nice free agent pickups to help a little.

Andre Gurode is suddenly looking very good

If Seattle did not lock him up, we’d better start bidding. Losing Garry Williams to fractured ankle leaves a 300 lb hole at right guard. Having Andre next to Jeff Otah would make some truck size holes on the right side. They could play together for 2-3 years while the cats bring in replacements and train them BAMF style.

Slightly off topic...

Too bad the front office did not realize the impact of the new kickoff rules, because I believe that Kasay would have been able to handle those duties IMO. Gonna be interesting to see if NO keeps 2 kickers on their roster.

Kasay isn’t a kick off guy. 5 yards doesn’t change that. Mare led the leauge and that was before the rule change

A lot of what happened wasn't so much Kasay not kicking it deep enough,

he was kicking it out of bounds, which let the other team start on the 40.

I'm going to have to watch this again...

I just finished watching it and came on here to see the reactions… the reaction to Clausen’s play didn’t quite match how I felt about it. I really thought drops from receivers was a pretty significant issue tonight. Receivers had plenty of chances to make plays tonight.

I’m not saying Clausen was tremendous… he was clearly outplayed by Anderson. His receiving corps didn’t do him any favors, though.

by Fernando De La Cruz on Sep 2, 2011 2:25 AM EDT reply actions

You know the worst part about Clausen's situation

Some of the stuff that happened just wasn’t his fault. It’s like he came into the line up and the wheels fell off. His INT came off a pass that was tipped directly out of AE’s hands. His Oline was really struggling in blitz pickups. And what the hell was that botched snap about where the center snapped it into his own foot?

For that, I do feel kinda bad for the kid. We’re moving in a new direction and the only fair thing to do for him is to try and move him somewhere else after next year.

by aceofsween on Sep 2, 2011 5:21 AM EDT reply actions

I do kinda feel bad for him

It just seems like since we drafted him, nothing really broke his way. Has he been a great QB? No. But a lot of the things he catches sh!+ for were bad luck as much as anything else.

Has he made the most of every opportunity he’s had? Mmmmm….not so much. But you kind of feel like half the time he’s lucky not to have been hit by a meteorite out on the field.

Oh, and how the fnork does the center manage to screw up the snap that badly?

by Loopy on Sep 2, 2011 8:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I watched that deep ball to AE on my dvr about 10 times

The ball never even really touched AEs hands, the DB popped it before it even got there. Then because Clausen is cursed, it tipped back into play and was picked.

I don’t think it was anyone’s fault really. Sometimes you gotta give the defender credit for making a great play. That was absolutely a pass that Clausen should throw against single coverage.

It still wasn’t a great throw though. He wasn’t hitting anyone in stride. It was your classic jump ball gone wrong.

by Tater596 on Sep 2, 2011 8:56 AM EDT up reply actions

If Clausen bears any small blame for that throw, it was maiking it in the first place, with the safety over the top in double coverage.

Not the ideal circumstance to be throwing to anyone but your tallest, fastest WR.

Any even then, with that coverage, a top QB wouldn’t make it.

by bigdavis on Sep 2, 2011 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions

I think you summorized AEs prob right now

He keeps waiting for the ball to fall into his cradled arms. He doesn’t attack and meet the ball which gives the dbs time to disrupt his catches.

by Panthster on Sep 2, 2011 10:57 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I think this is fair

And im sure the coaches know what to work with him on after last night. He needs to learn to attack the ball.

Amen

I wonder how/why Rivera was able to teach him that so fast vs Fox?

by ambull01 on Sep 2, 2011 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess not

It’s kind of amazing though that Rivera forces him to carry around a football during practice and the next game he plays he carries the ball like it’s a gold brick. I love it.

by ambull01 on Sep 2, 2011 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Goodson likely tuned out while Fox was trying to "teach him."

Mike, it’s a mind-set. Anytime you run the football, it’s going to be a very tough affair in a very hostile environment. I know you’d like to have that last fumble back , but you couldn’t change it and couldn’t erase it. It was a mistake. You’ve got to admit them and fix them and not let them happen again. A lot was made of last time. Our focus is now on this time. You have the confidence of your coaches and your team, I think that’s the key. We have a couple of guys in front of you. Those couple of guys got hurt a year ago and those couple of guys may get hurt this year. We’ve been down this road before. It was dumb luck, when you get right down to it. The defender came in here and picked up on the things that we were doing, and it’s all history from there. It’s not how big the wand is. It’s how much magic is inside, and you’ve got a lot of magic. You’re a guy that gets it done. Id be hard pressed to find a better measurement for a heart than yours. … you’ve been big for us in a lot of different spots and we’re going to need you to be that way again.

Well they didn't seem to make an impact

My youngest son kept hitting on my older boy who was 3 years older and twice his size. Everyday he would start hitting the older boy and the older boy would refrain from retaliating due to the size differential. After this went on for a week of me lecturing the youngest after each incident, it was clear he wasn’t getting my message. So when the younger more aggressive son started hitting the older, I told the older boy he had my full permission to defend himself. The younger son’s eyes got real big and sure enough later that day the younger son got popped by the older. It was never a problem again.

Sometimes you words just aren’t enough to teach.

Oh yeah

Good movie. It seems freaking ridiculous that an NFL head coach/running back coach that’s making millions of dollars didn’t think about having him do that. Of course they may have done that and Goodson just blew them off which would mean he knows Rivera will get rid of his ass if he continues with his old habits.
