Something's not quite right... Panthers cut Balmer
This experiment had the plugged pulled quickly didn't it? Tonight it was reported that the Carolina Panthers have shockingly cut DT Kentwan Balmer just one week after claiming him off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks.

Breaking News: The Panthers have released DT Kentwan Balmer without even having him play a game. Interesting.
Ron Rivera went as far as to talk up Balmer, saying that the Panthers believed he played out of position as fans hoped he would become the answer to a dangerously under-prepared defensive line, devoid of a true 3-technique DT.
My immediate reaction is to think something is up. Either the Carolina Panthers have a trade or signing lined up and needed a roster spot, or Balmer who is known to be somewhat mercurial has simple continued this trend. Either way, it's extremely unusual to have a player released at this time, especially before a game we thought he would be featured heavily in. Immediately fans are freaking out as if Balmer was the second coming (as we tend to do when a player is a local prospect) but I think this whole situation will play itself out soon and we'll get a better understanding of this unusual release.

He had a shorter stint with the Panthers than anyone I can recall.

^^ this
We have up-and comers at DT as well as a vet DT on IR. We don’t want anything more than a cheap one year rental. Spending more money on a multiple year contract could hamstring us down the road.
IIRC
Williams was a two-down player at most his last year in Minny. I’m thinking he’ll be playing the same role for us. At least I believe so….anybody have any numbers on how many defensive snaps he took? His numbers look like two-down numbers, but without a snap total, I have no idea for sure.

Balmer yes, Burney has an outside shot. RT @ThaJTL: @carolinagrowl I’m wondering if you can give me updates on how Balmer and Burney are looking in practice? Think they’ll make the team?

I don't get it
Why not let him play tonight to see what he can do? Even if we have something up our sleeve, what would it hurt for him to play? Are we somehow saving a roster spot on cutting him before the game?
"plutonium grade raw material" @THEERNIEBLUNT
LOL
Cutting him an hour before tonight’s game makes zero sense, but I don’t really care. Anyone who thought he was going to be a strong contributor was being blind.

Very disappointed....
Would have a tleast liked to have seen him in some game action…
This has to mean they have somebody lined up or a trade is in the works
I cant see them doing this any other way, we are wayyyy too thin at that position otherwise

I'm with you on this one James.
I think they’ve got something else in the works and Balmer didn’t do anything to impress.

Im watching Pats/Giants on my computer. Tate is very much on the bubble. With Pilares injury i would think we would look at him hard if he is cut.

This reeks of either a statement or a roster move
Maybe there’s something lined up. Maybe he challenged leadership and/or coaching in the locker room. Maybe he said something that should never be said by a teammate. One thing’s for sure, there’s no way in hell they’ll be able to keep something so bizarre buried. Hopefully we’ll understand in the next few days.
Must have called him a c@ck sucker
That will get you run every time, never thought I would get a Bull Durham reference in, lol.

Roster move?
Could BAMF be trying to sneak him onto the practice squad?
If he pulls off that stunt, I would NEVER play poker with Rivera!

On a good note....
If the panthers suck ass this season and hopefully get that #1 pick again, the pick is now worth a King’s Ransom..We have are QB of the future (hopefully), and the new rookie cap works in our favor and Andrew Luck works in our favor..we can get so many picks trading that 1 pick…I’m talkin about Rickey Williams to Saints picks…4 years of 1st Rd picks? Your 1st and 2nd for the next 2 years? possibilities are endless
you could deff fill a lot of holes but you could also pass up on the next insert great QB here. Although i think us getting the #1 pick is slim. We will be bad but not worst team in the NFL bad

I've Been A Big Keenum Booster For 3 Years Or So, But His Arm Is Just Average At Best, It;s His Accuracy That's Great
He’s also not a big QB (6-1, 210), he’s like a Drew Brees, and is currently projected to go about the 5th round. Keenum ’s throws are almost never off target, and he throws into NFL size windows (around a foot wide, or smaller), I believe he could be a great west coast QB.

Sorry bud, that's not going to happen.......
The rookie wage scale makes first round picks even more valuable. Not to mention there’s no guarantee Luck even comes out next year. Also, we’re NEVER going to see another trade like the Ricky Williams deal.

A team source tells me the primary reason the Panthers cut Kentwan Balmer is because he wasn’t in very good shape.

Yes & Yes "scorpion12"
His suspension just got reduced from 4 games to 2, and it will apply to any team he signs with.
As vet of many years, his whole season salary will be guaranteed if he’s on a teems opening day roster, so teams may have been waiting until after the 1st game to sign him.
The Patriots bringing Pat Williams a day or 2 ago might have convinced the Panthers they have to go for Wiliams now, if they want him (he’s a great run stopper, I think PFF ranked him around 3rd in the league last season).
Did . not . see . that . coming .
Something VERY important behind the scenes.
Yeah, the Cats needed to make a drop to sign Felton so and Balmer went first......
to make sure the deal went as directed…..As far as the way paperwork works in the NFL when a claim is made, a slot HAS to be open for the player….Balmer was not in football shape and was released first. After that the team could sign Jerome Felton as he was a huge upgrade fron Jackson and if Fiametta becomes a PUP list guy Felton is your starter.. he was a full season starter already and is thought of as a top 15 blocking fullback in the NFL…But the Panthers claimed him after waiving Balmer.
Then Felton had to pass the team physical in order to suit up….When he was given the thumbs up Rashawn Jackson was cut (that way the cats would not be w/o a fullback tonight).
As mentioned before the Panthers knew when Balmer landed in Charlotte they were going to release him as it was a scouting blunder.
As far as Balmer goes the Panthers had no intention of letting him see game action and wanted him out of camp before he could make a possible injury claim (hey, it happens)…as Tony Pike…he knew he was gonna be cut and guess what, he strained his throwing elbow…Now did I miss something or did he just not get any reps during the past month. Either way the Panthers had to place him on IR or reach an injury settlement with him, which they did..and it was not cheap. I am not saying Pike whiffed but crazier things have happened! I mean Balmer knew he could not play and after four reps warming up at practice he had to sit down and could not go for the rest of the d-line drills…so, maybe he thought hmmmm, a nice hammy or concussion would be worth $250,000 or so. Oh yeah, he was the pro who was in the middle of the Marvin Austin mess at Carolina. So, maybe his character was just not what you wanted at your practices.
It's especially surprising to see a former 1st round big DT cut from a panthers team who has dog-shit at that position.
