It's hard to broach this topic without it becoming a rampant forum for homerism and bias, however I'll ask you to try and suspend your previous leanings in favor of purely analyzing the two players. In the wake of Chris Johnson's mammoth contract extension today I thought I'd ask the CSR community a simple question: Who would you rather?
Of course I'm referring here to Tennesee Titans RB Chris Johnson and Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams, two very different players linked this year because they both signed contract extensions. The former has now set the bar for elite RB contracts, the latter never threatened to miss time and signed on the dotted line for a fair amount when his deal was up.
After the jump we'll look at both Johnson and Williams and I'll ask you: 'Given every possible issue who would you rather on your team?'
28 years old
New contract received: 5 years, $43 million- $21 million guaranteed ($8.6 million per year if he plays all 5 years)
Career stats: 841 carries, 4,211 yards, 5.0 YPC, 31 TD --- 118 receptions, 922 yards, 4 TD
- Pros: Team player, good attitude, happy to share carries, top 5 RB when healthy, low carries due to sharing with Jonathan Stewart
- Cons: Injured each of last two seasons, approaching 30 year mark
25 years old
New contract received: 4 years, $55.3 million- $30 million guaranteed ($13.8 million per year if he plays all 4 years)
Career stats: 925 carries, 4,598 yards, 5.0 YPC, 34 TD --- 137 receptions, 1,007 yards, 4 TD
- Pros: Consistently tops the league in yards, scoring threat from anywhere on the field, can put a team on his back
- Cons: Me-first attitude, relies heavily on speed, huge amount of carries on his body
This is really a pretty tough comparison. Johnson has more yards, but he also has a lot more carries on his body which effectively makes him a more worn player. However, few deny that Johnson is one of the most electric playmakers in the NFL which is why his contract supports that.
DeAngelo is the model of consistency... when healthy, and really that's the hardest element to predict with D-Will. He was on IR last year and is quickly approaching the 30 year mark.
So... who would you pick?
